1. Wilderness Survival [Book]
Product Details:
"a must-read for anyone who goes outdoors. informative and captivating." — capt. scott o'grady, survivor, bosnia completely updated with information on keeping yourself safe and healthy in the wilderness a comprehensive, well-organized, and user-friendly guide to staying alive in the backcountry with concise explanations and detailed illustrations, survival expert gregory davenport covers the five basic elements of survival – personal protection, signaling, finding food and water, travel, and health – providing the reader with complete information on how to stay calm and alive until rescue arrives.
Reviews:
#1) This guy know what he is talking about. There is no doubt about that. I bought this book because I am traveling 780 miles in a canoe this summer and thought, "Well, it would be nice to know how to survive if something bad happens (like a canoe getting away or getting in a close encounter with a bear). I still back up my reasoning, but this book doesn't cover much of what I hoped it would AND covers some other things in such tremendous detail, more than once, that it becomes menotnous to read. #2) For example, he explains how to make about a half dozen shelters in the wild out of snow. Well, great… but why? Especially when it is recommended over and over to be creative and innovative and just follow the basic ideas – where many of the 'basic ideas' are similar in each example. This would be great knowledge, if I ever have to need it. The only thing I was thinking as I read was, "Well, next time I get into a snowball fight with the kids, I'll be set on making the fort" but other than that… #3) This is not a book to get the kiddos at Christmas. The reading level is, I'd say, around 10th grade. If you're thinking about getting your child a survival book because "Little Johnny" wants to know what kinds of plants he can eat for some reason uncomprehensible to you, this is not the book. Even as a college graduate, I find myself going back and rereading items to make sure I know exactly what I am reading. #4) The reason I gave it a '4 star' reading is because I think the author: a) assumes that the reader is very experienced in 'outdoor activities. b) the author often says the same thing over and over again. Tough to read this book straight through. c) Covers "Too Much" without much in detail. He jumps from desert survival skills to artic skills at a page turn and the reader is often left to wonder why. #5) Finally- the best part of this book is that it does have some VERY good ideas for what to keep in a survival kit, what kind of equipment he recommends, and an EXCELLENT basic plan to survival. –If I even have to use one thing from this book on the canoe trip, however, I'm probably about dead. This is a 'worst-case' book that, I think if I got into a positiion where anything in this book was relevant, I'd proably have died already about 40 minutes prior. I really hope that helps you make a choice on the best survival book for YOU!kandytreats

Since its establishment as a federally protected wilderness in 1964, the boundary waters has become one of our nation's most valuable–and most frequently visited–natural treasures. when amy and dave freeman learned of toxic mining proposed within the area's watershed, they decided to take action–by spending a year in the wilderness, and sharing their experience through video, photos, and blogs with an audience of hundreds of thousands of concerned citizens. this book tells the deeper story of their adventure in northern minnesota: of loons whistling under a moonrise, of ice booming as it forms and cracks, of a moose and her calf swimming across a misty lake.with the magic–and urgent–message that has rallied an international audience to the campaign to save the boundary waters, a year in the wilderness is a rousing cry of witness activism, and a stunning tribute to this singularly beautiful region.

10. My Life In The Wilderness: An Alaskan's Story [Book]
Product Details:
Robert hilliker was born in the southern lower peninsula of michigan, in the late 1920's, just before the great depression of 1929 and the 1930's. as a young boy, the tales of daniel boone, jim bowie, and the stories of the mountain men who roamed the great rocky mountains in search of beaver struck a chord deep down inside that he could neither understand nor explain. they did, however, produce in him a strong desire to experience such a life for himself. in the following years, almost every decision he made was in accordance with an "inner compass" which pointed steadily to the northwest. "to go into the wilderness, build a strong and warm log cabin with my own two hands, and hunt for my food. trap fur bearing animals to sell to the fur buyers for money to buy the things i couldn't produce myself, get my water from the creek, cut the firewood i would need to cook my food and to keep me warm through the long cold winters of the 'north country, ' could i do something like that?" this is his story.
11. Braving The Wilderness: The Quest For True Belonging And The Courage To Stand Alone [Ebook]
Product Details:
Social scientist brené brown, phd, msw, has sparked a global conversation about the experiences that bring meaning to our lives—experiences of courage, vulnerability, love, belonging, shame, and empathy. in braving the wilderness, brown redefines what it means to truly belong in an age of increased polarization. with her trademark mix of research, storytelling, and honesty, brown will again change the cultural conversation while mapping a clear path to true belonging. but in a culture that’s rife with perfectionism and pleasing, and with the erosion of civility, it’s easy to stay quiet, hide in our ideological bunkers, or fit in rather than show up as our true selves and brave the wilderness of uncertainty and criticism. and that path cuts right through the wilderness. brown writes, “the wilderness is an untamed, unpredictable place of solitude and searching. it is a place as dangerous as it is breathtaking, a place as sought after as it is feared. but it turns out to be the place of true belonging, and it’s the bravest and most sacred place you will ever stand.”
