One will never think of most "drinks" in the same way after reading Standage's excellent book. His chronicle of the world's favorite libations is historical and very in depth — revealing much of the social and political forces that influenced just what the average "joe or jane" was reaching for on a daily basis (throughout the eons) to quench his thirst or to help get her through their day. This is fun, lighter reading for any lover of historical or social books — I liked it and also learned a lot from it…though I did find myself craving a good drink more than once while I was reading it! Most people know Gombrich through his magnificent "The Story of Art," which is simply the best overview of art ever written. Although "A Little History of the World" is on a much smaller scale, it is just as beautifully crafted. He does a wonderful job of providing a quick and insightful overview of (primarily) Western history. In particular, he transforms history into a compelling story that pulls you along from chapter to chapter. I can think of no better gift to give a young person in this day of sound bites and history-lite. And even though it was written for young people, it provides us older folks with a healthy and enjoyable refresher on where we and our society have come from. I've read several comprehensive world histories (in particular J.M. Roberts classic History of the World) and Gombrich's little book serves as a wonderful complement to such larger and more comprehensive works.
I cannot recommend this book more highly. It should be a part of the curriculum in high schools! Beautifully written and completely captivating. The book I believe is aimed at younger children, but I can confidently say it would be a pleasure to read at any age. Starting at the beginning and carrying the reader right through to the present, the author turns our own History into a magical, adventurous tale that you will not be able to put down.

The Story of the World is a wonderful history curriculum and I love the audio book option. I actually use it in conjunction with Layers of Learning. I never enjoyed learning history as a child, especially ancient history. This audio collection has changed my perspective. My kids beg to listen to it every time we are in the car. So I began with "The Discoverers" – and was suitably impressed with both his learning, his assimilation of a huge variety of sources and topics, and with his writing as well. A good general world history, that focuses strongly on the development of world civilisations and societies, from a broad perspective, and on their underlying influences. It's a great book if you want a broad overview of ancient societies and important developments in the history of mankind. The book is divided into three parts: from dawn to the spread of the main religions (Christianity, Buddhism and Islam), the conquest of the planet during Middle Age, reformation, and European scientific revolution and finally, the third stage starting with the American Revolution until today. The first two parts make up the bulk of the book, which makes sense, as that covers the bulk of human history. However, I was disappointed at how little coverage there was of the last century– WWI and WWII were breezed over in just a chapter. I bought this book to read to prepare for an exam where I'd be tested on both pre-modern and modern history, and I thought this book would be a great study tool. It was really helpful in refreshing my memory about the pre-modern part, but it was no help at all in preparing for the modern-history part of the exam. Obviously in fitting the history of the world into a book of this size, some sacrifices had to be made. Some of the major political upheavals of history are merely skimmed over. Barely mentioned are the first Persian empire, the conquests of Alexander, the Crusades, the Hundred Years War, the Thirty Years War. Instead, we get a gradually evolving look at the way life was lived: the crops, the farming techniques, the inventions, the technology, the philosophies and religions. Also, Blainey has gone to considerable trouble to bring in areas of the world often missing from such a "global" history: New Zealand, Australia, Africa, China, Japan, and Indonesia. One problem is that this God's-eye view leaves out almost all the detail connecting us to particular times and places, although Blainey takes care to come down to earth periodically and talk about actual events and people. Still, if you're interested in learning specifics about famous people, events, or cultures from history, this book won't be for you. Also, the writing style gets tedious after a while– I like histories that are told like a compelling story, but this isn't that type of book. It was readable enough though.

I am generally not a fan of encyclopedias, because there is usually so much text crammed in, that we all kind of glaze over pretty quickly. This one is different and special. Our History Quest curriculum is built around it and we just love the book. My 12 year old even has us wait until he his home from his charter middle school, to do it along with the whole family. The quicklinks really bring the book to life and the content is just enough to create a great jumping off point for us. The book is a modern day classic which tries to reason why certain decisions were chosen over the other and how these decisions have shaped up the course of human history. While giving us potential explanations, Yuval also reminds us that these are mere speculations or theories and nobody can be sure what was going inside the minds of homo sapiens at that time. I have the original hard back issue of this book. The original was of a larger format and the paper used in it was of a thicker and better quality. The colour plates were very well detailed. The quality of the original publication was excellent and because of this the reading experience was very enjoyable. By comparison this paperback version is very poor. So poor in fact that it detracts from the enjoyment and experience of reading. It is a standard paperback size. It is sad as I bought this for a gift for a friend but I do not feel able to give it such is the quality of printing materials and format used. In reading this paperback I suppose it would be comparable to watching a film produced for cinema on a mobile phone. The information has not changed but presentation is key. I have a very sensitive 1st grader who read this with me. It was by far his favorite subject, and the writing style certainly is engaging, however, there were some parts that made him cry. Yes, it's history and reality and I don't want to shield him from that, but, be aware that there is a lot of death in this book. Your child may not be ready for all the gruesome tales of cyclops, or Julius Ceasar's murder, etc. If your child is sensitive, then you may want to wait a year or two to do this series or plan to preview what parts you might want to skip/soften.User
Lots of people had written raves about this book. It is ok, but because it covers history from different parts of the world it seems to jump all over the place. It does each time period from different parts of the world and then goes around again for the next time period. I think younger kids would not be understanding it well unless you made a timeline to go with it. I felt that if you didn't have some sort of history understanding you wouldn't be able to piece it together. For this reason I think kids need to be older to get the most out of it. Many of the stories are fun and well written though.Pieta McLean
