Reviews:
Stephen King gives us a snapshot of his early life as a writer with great humor and simplicity. That intro, not truly an autobiography, provides a background to understand how he thinks about writing and his own work habits. He writes with great humility and knocks, where appropriate, pomposity about the ART of writing. He doesn't like the formal structures such as plot and outline, preferring his own organic story "situations."nightbird523
Amazing book and inspiring to the aspiring writer, he keeps everything brief and when it comes to his own life, its funny and tragic in both measures. I never really read anything Stephen King has written but after reading this book, I cant wait to read everything he has written. A superb book!jamesblake2009
Casual and hardcore fans as well as anybody interested in writing should own this. It's a great reference and contains everything you need to know to write books. It's also probably the closest thing there will ever be to an autobiography from King. Some of it is instructional but it's told in a compelling and entertaining manner. I've read it three or four timeshanphh-dnhgou
2. Write Away: One Novelist's Approach To Fiction And The Writing Life [Book]
Product Details:
Here's what i tell my students on the first day when i teach one of my creative writing courses: you will be published if you possess three qualities–talent, passion, and discipline.in write away, new york times bestselling author elizabeth george offers would-be writers exactly what they need to know about how to construct a novel. she provides a detailed overview of the craft and gives helpful instruction on all elements of writing, from setting and plot to technique and process. to illustrate her points, george presents excerpts from a number of well-known writers, including barbara kingsolver, harper lee, e. m. forster, john irving, toni morrison, stephen king, ernest hemingway, and alice hoffman.in addition to being a clear and concise guide to fiction writing, write away also opens a window into the life of elizabeth george. it reveals the inspiring personal story of how the distinguished author came to be published and how she meticulously researches and crafts her novels.i have a love-hate relationship with the writing life. i wouldn't wish to have any other kind of life . . . and on the other hand, i wish it were easier. and it never is. the reward comes sentence by sentence. the reward comes in the unexpected inspiration. the reward comes from creating a character who lives and breathes and is perfectly real. but such effort it takes to attain the reward! i would never have believed it would take such effort. george's solid understanding of the craft is conveyed in the enticing manner of a true storyteller, making write away not only a marvelous, interesting, and informative book but also a glimpse inside the world of a beloved writer.
Reviews:
I have read many books on writers who are willing to teach the novice writer and am grateful for their time. Elizabeth George's process of writing in the book provides for straight-forward steps in attempts for the rest of us. It is practical and guides us with examples or excerpts from several books. She is also very encouraging but it is definitely her approach. It is divided into elements of storytelling with Part 1 with an overview. It is a well structured book with techniques and examples.Mimi

Product Details:
"help! my students can't write!" why you need a writing revolution in your classroom and how to lead it. the writing revolution (twr) provides a clear method of instruction that you can use no matter what subject or grade level you teach. the model, also known as the hochman method, has demonstrated, over and over, that it can turn weak writers into strong communicators by focusing on specific techniques that match their needs and by providing them with targeted feedback. insurmountable as the challenges faced by many students may seem, twr can make a dramatic difference. and the method does more than improve writing skills. it also helps: boost reading comprehension improve organizational and study skills enhance speaking abilities develop analytical capabilities twr is as much a method of teaching content as it is a method of teaching writing. there's no separate writing block and no separate writing curriculum. instead, teachers of all subjects adapt the twr strategies and activities to their current curriculum and weave them into their content instruction. but perhaps what's most revolutionary about the twr method is that it takes the mystery out of learning to write well. it breaks the writing process down into manageable chunks and then has students practice the chunks they need, repeatedly, while also learning content. praise for the writing revolution "every once in a while, you find an outstanding method that is clear, makes sense, and is embraced by teachers and students alike, and what's most important, works! this is how i would describe the writing revolution. i have observed it in action, and i have been encouraging teachers to learn about it and use it." —sally e. shaywitz, m.d., author of overcoming dyslexia, the audrey g. ratner professor in learning development, co-director, yale center for dyslexia & creativity "as an author, i am deeply concerned about the vast number of students who cannot express themselves with clarity in their writing. the writing revolution is grounded in research, has been proven effective by decades of classroom application, and is impeccable in its logistics." —mary higgins clark, bestselling author "the writing strategies discussed in this book are life-changing for students who are exposed to them. a must-read for educational leaders, teachers, and parentsgiving students the power of the pen to write their way to a successful future." —deirdre a. deangelis-d'alessio, principal, new dorp high school, new york city, new york

This book is well set out, easy to read and has a great instructional routine for teaching writing.Spot on
This is the best book so far I have read on teaching writing to kids. As a homeschool mum I have stumbled my way through many programs without understanding how to show improvement. Since reading this book I have applied it's concepts straight away with subjects they are currently studying. This has really helped them to consolidate their knowledge. At the moment we are still working at the sentence level but their writing is really improving. Best of all they are much better at diagnosing their own writing and seeing how to improve it.Crystal

I don't read Stephen King books…too scary! But I once saw this book in a high school English class when I was substitute teaching and started to read it. I like to write and I also like nonfiction stories so I found myself enjoying this book right away. I never finished it. When I saw it for sale on ebay, brand new, still in the plastic wrapping, and unabridged on compact disk, I had to buy it. I just finished it and it was really great! It's read by Stephen King himself and the first part is a sincere autobiography. The next part is a lesson on how to write. It is precise and informative in a no-nonsense kind of way. It inspired me to start writing again. At the end, Stephen King tells us the story of how he was hit by a van one night while taking a walk near his home. It was so poignant it almost made me cry. If you love to write and need a few practical suggestions, this is the book for you. Also, if you like reading Stephen King novels (which I don't), I think it would be very interesting to read about where he was in his life when he wrote each of his books. I am now reading "The Stand", to get a taste of his writing technique. I think I may have read it many, many, years ago and it's one of the few that I may be able to get through (although it's also his longest novel) without being totally freaked out! Thanks for reading this review and I recommend "On Writing by Stephen King" to everyone!!gid711
I bought this book in paperback a couple of years ago, because I wanted to improve my writing skills. I never got to read it, because I got too busy. I decided to purchase it on eBay in an audio format so I could "read" it while working or driving. This was the best decision for me. I have completly read the book, and I'm preparing to read and study it again.adelegirl
