Rolig, spännande, romantisk. Inte en PK-bok men den säger något om tiden den skrevs i.Inger J
Fantastisk! Den kan ju bara vara super med en sådan start "I had a farm in Africa, at the foot of the Ngong Hills. The Equator runs across these highlands, a hundred miles to the north, and the farm lay at an altitude of over six thousand feet. In the day-time you felt that you had got high up, near to the sun, but the early mornings and evenings were limpid and restful, and the nights were cold."Anna L
Josefine E

Reviews:
The Remaking by Clay McLeod Chapman is a horror story I was prepared to enjoy but, unfortunately, I found it to be stagnant and boring. This is the story of Ella Louise Ford and her daughter Jessica who were burned at the stake under suspicion of being witches. This crime was committed by some of the townspeople of Pilot's Creek in Virginia who subsequently met their end in grim fashion. Twenty years later, an ambitious director comes to town to make a movie about the unfortunate mother and child. Things do not go well and twenty years after that, a remaking of the movie is undertaken. I read the entire book because many reviewers found this novel to be excellent and I wanted to be fair by making sure that I was not missing anything. Unfortunately, it only seemed to repeat itself, at a slow pace, over and over again. Maybe this is not my kind of book and please remember that this is only my own opinion. Thank you to Quirk Books and NetGalley for the e-ARC in exchange for an honest review.Carole F.

11. Born A Crime: Stories From A South African Childhood [Book]

Product Details:
#1 new york times bestseller * the compelling, inspiring, and comically sublime story of one man's coming-of-age, set during the twilight of apartheid and the tumultuous days of freedom that followed named one of the best books of the year by michiko kakutani, new york times * newsday * esquire * npr * booklist trevor noah's unlikely path from apartheid south africa to the desk of the daily show began with a criminal act: his birth. trevor was born to a white swiss father and a black xhosa mother at a time when such a union was punishable by five years in prison. living proof of his parents' indiscretion, trevor was kept mostly indoors for the earliest years of his life, bound by the extreme and often absurd measures his mother took to hide him from a government that could, at any moment, steal him away. finally liberated by the end of south africa's tyrannical white rule, trevor and his mother set forth on a grand adventure, living openly and freely and embracing the opportunities won by a centuries-long struggle. born a crime is the story of a mischievous young boy who grows into a restless young man as he struggles to find himself in a world where he was never supposed to exist. it is also the story of that young man's relationship with his fearless, rebellious, and fervently religious mother–his teammate, a woman determined to save her son from the cycle of poverty, violence, and abuse that would ultimately threaten her own life. the stories collected here are by turns hilarious, dramatic, and deeply affecting. whether subsisting on caterpillars for dinner during hard times, being thrown from a moving car during an attempted kidnapping, or just trying to survive the life-and-death pitfalls of dating in high school, trevor illuminates his curious world with an incisive wit and unflinching honesty. his stories weave together to form a moving and searingly funny portrait of a boy making his way through a damaged world in a dangerous time, armed only with a keen sense of humor and a mother's unconventional, unconditional love. praise for born a crime "[a] compelling new memoir . . . by turns alarming, sad and funny, [trevor noah's] book provides a harrowing look, through the prism of mr. noah's family, at life in south africa under apartheid. . . . born a crime is not just an unnerving account of growing up in south africa under apartheid, but a love letter to the author's remarkable mother."–michiko kakutani, the new york times "[an] unforgettable memoir."–parade "what makes born a crime such a soul-nourishing pleasure, even with all its darker edges and perilous turns, is reading noah recount in brisk, warmly conversational prose how he learned to negotiate his way through the bullying and ostracism. . . . what also helped was having a mother like patricia nombuyiselo noah. . . . consider born a crime another such gift to her–and an enormous gift to the rest of us."–usa today "[noah] thrives with the help of his astonishingly fearless mother. . . . their fierce bond makes this story soar."–people "[noah's] electrifying memoir sparkles with funny stories . . . and his candid and compassionate essays deepen our perception of the complexities of race, gender, and class."–booklist (starred review) "a gritty memoir . . . studded with insight and provocative social criticism . . . with flashes of brilliant storytelling and acute observations."–kirkus reviews

Reviews:
Absolutely awesome read. I am not a fan of autobiographies, and yet this one was delicious! I fed my mind, heart, and soul. I was expecting to hear about how he was a jokester growing up or of something…who knows. I just know I was not expecting this…this book tells of his upbringing as a colored South African with a mother who set the foundation under which he currently functions. There is telling of his hunger to survive at all stages of life in a way that is very reminiscent of American children today. Definitely worth every bit of my time. Glad I picked it up!Abronxgirltoldme
The first half of the book made me laugh out loud. I have seen a lot of Trevor Noah’s daily show updates and those are just as hilarious so when I was reading this book, I could literally hear his voice. Trevor has a gift to have humor about the tragedies he and his family faced. How our system betrays certain groups of people. It’s great to see how he understands so deeply the right and wrong in what he did in his past whether as a kid or as an adult. I learned a great deal about South African history through this book. The ridiculous hunger of power by suppressing other people can still be seen in some parts of the world. We read all these stories about war, nazis, apartheid, slavery but do we actually learn anything? Do we stop discriminating against other people? Why don’t we respect every human being that came into this world, just like we did? Domestic violence is still a major concern and police in many male dominating countries take it the same way it’s shown in this book. They don’t file a complaint and it gives the edge and the power to such men to repeat their horrific actions without any consequences till they eventually beat the woman to death. I wish in this century, we can all start respecting women and start taking crimes like rapes and domestic violence seriously all over the world. I loved this book and the writing style. I hope more and more people read it.p.a
A book made up.of short chapters each a self contained episode of the author's very colourful.life. An easy read, vibrant and lively. One of our bookclub did wonder how such could be fitted into 19 years…? But an enjoyable, interesting read, giving great insight into life in South Africa as a mixed race kid, only a few years ago…MrsDent

Journey to Jo'Burg by Beverley Naidoo explores apartheid in South Africa through the eyes of two young children. Siblings Naledi and Tiro set out to reach their mother to let her know that their younger sibling, Dineo, is ill. During their journey to reach their mother in Johannesburg, they discover a world that they never knew about; from physical landmarks and buildings, to the realities of apartheid. Along the way they find the kindness of people willing to help them. The story educates the reader about apartheid in a gentle way. A topic as complex as apartheid is a difficult subject to introduce to children, but Naidoo does it in such a way that it helps open their eyes to the realities without being overwhelming. The reader hopes and wishes Naledi and Tiro find their "Mma" and help their sister. We see their strength and courage and we feel their heartbreak. They "knew the fear in the other's heart" as they pressed on. Journey to Jo'Burg is a story of strength, courage, and the sad realities of apartheid told in a way that readers, young and old, can catch a glimpse of the struggles people are up against when they are not treated with respect and dignity. One day, long before the troubles, he slipped away without saying a word to anyone and never went back. and then another day, forty-three years later, he collapsed just inside the front door of his house in a small english town. it was late in the day when it happened, on his way home after work, but it was also late in the day altogether. he had left things for too long and there was no one to blame for it but himself.abbas has never told anyone about his past-before he was a sailor on the high seas, before he met his wife maryam outside a drugstore in exeter, before they settled into a quiet life with their children, jamal and hanna. now, at the age of sixty-three, he suffers a collapse that renders him unable to speak about things he thought he would one day have to.jamal and hanna have grown up and gone out into the world. they were both born in england but cannot shake a sense of apartness. hanna calls herself anna now, and has just moved to a new city to be near her boyfriend. she feels the relationship is headed somewhere serious, but the words have not yet been spoken out loud. jamal, the listener of the family, moves into a student house and is captivated by a young woman with dark blue eyes and her own complex story to tell. abbas's illness forces both children home, to the dark silences of their father and the fretful capability of their mother, maryam, who has never thought to find herself-until now.
