Reviews:
I just got done rereading this book for Halloween and it’s so amazing! Such a good read from cover to cover! There are a lot more details and back stories in the book and it does answer a lot of questions I had about the movie. If you are a fan of the movie or a horror aficionado this is a great book for you.robin.h
Such a fantastic read. The kind of book you can’t put down… what else are you to expect when picking up a SK novel? The man is a genius. As for the movie…. it was infuriating. If you’re a book snob like me and can’t stand when movies don’t stick to the script, do yourself a favor and don’t watch this one.alexandria.w
Quite simply put, The Shining is the best horror story I have ever read. It scared the hell out of me. Over a period of time, I have noticed certain standard "motifs" in horror stories. One of these I call "The Lost Child". Such stories will typically involve a child, who can see what the silly grownups cannot see (or, even if they do see, don't acknowledge because it goes against reason and logic): and who fights, however high the odds stacked against him/ her are. Danny Torrance is such a boy. Danny can read minds. He can see the frightening thoughts inside his Dad's and Mom's heads ("DIVORCE", "SUICIDE") but is powerless to do anything about it. Danny does not know that he has a gift; he takes it as a matter of course, until Dick Halloran of the Overlook Hotel tells him that he "shines on". Jack Torrance, Danny's Dad, reformed alcoholic and struggling writer, is trying to put his life back together after a tragedy. He gets what he sees as the ideal chance when he lands the job of caretaker of the Overlook Hotel for the winter. In the snowed-in hotel with only his son and wife Wendy, Jack assumes that he will get enough quality time to be with his family, patch up old quarrels, and write that breakout novel. But the Overlook has other plans. The hotel, which feeds on and grows in strength from the evils committed on its premises, wants Danny-permanently-to join its crew of ghostly inhabitants. And to do that, it needs to get to Jack… The novel slowly grows in horror, starting with mild unease, moving up through sweaty palms and dry mouth, to pure, gut-wrenching terror. Jack's slow slide into madness is paralleled by the growth in power of the hotel's dark miasma, and Danny's extraordinary capabilities. We are on a roller-coaster ride into darkness. The world of grownups is often frighteningly incomprehensible to young children: these fears seldom die as we grow up, but remain dormant in our psyche. There are very few of us who does not have a ghost in our childhood somewhere. It is when the writer invokes this ghost that story gets to us. King does a masterly job of awakening that child, and putting him/ her in the midst of childhood terrors through the alter ego of Danny Torrance, lost in the cavernous corridors of the Overlook. There are a lot of passages which literally creeped me out in this novel (the topiary animals, the fire hose in the corridor, the woman in the bathroom to name a few). As King has said elsewhere, the monster behind the door is more frightening than the monster slavering at you: this book is full of such monsters. More importantly, you will keep on remembering your own boogeymen while you are reading; and long after you finish, you will feel the urge to look behind you. Horror stories are a form of catharsis. As King says, the writer takes you to the body covered under the sheet: you feel it, and are frightened. At the same time, you are relieved that the body is not you.Rene

I bought this after watching the newest version. Its betterMariah
My favorite Stephan King book ever. I got lost in the story, and could not put the book down. It was one of those books that made me sad that it was over, wanting desperately for there to be more. If it where not for this novel I would not be as big of a King fan as I am today. It not only got me hooked on the horror genre but also the post-apocalyptic genre. I would have to say that this is by far my all time favorite novel and I have reread it a hundred times.brittany.l

Wow! Actually scarier than remember it being the first time I'd read it many years ago! And the feel, the used wear of it and that old smell of a well-worn, loved and often well-read paperback was nostalgic to say the least. So dark, scary and so brilliantly written by Stephen King…I still love the back-flap of this book, which reads: "The most frightening book Stephen King has ever written." … Still true to this day…! PS: Beware: you might have some serious nightmares from this. I even had one just when I fell into a catnap while reading it on the couch in broad daylight…!darqui_95
Right now I'm reading IT. Then I'm going to read Pet Semertary. I Love the movie. I've seen it tons of times. I recently started reading Stephen King books. So I ordered almost all of them. Cause the movie is spooky scary…and I know the book will be spooky scary too…drsweetlips2

Reviews:
I read this wonderfully frightening and ultimately hopeful book when it was first published. A life-long avid reader of everything and a bit precocious, I had read short news items about both the U.S., and at the time the U.S.S.R., we're developing strains of deadly germs to be released during battle. King's book is in the top 10 of the tens of thousands of books I have read in the past 55 years. It vividly brought home an horrific view of the total devastation and terror that germ and nuclear war can unleash. Since that time, I have worked against their use by supporting, working for, and always voting for candidates totally opposed to germ and nuclear warfare.sharostake0
Having read a lot of Stephen King books previously, this has been one of my favourite and loved books of his. Normally, King loses control of his stories – often turning weird or extravagant. I find that he cannot finish the stories cause they seem like a forever occuring horror. But from the start to finish, Salem's Lot kept reasonable and almost realistic. It held my attention and I was anticipating when I could finish my other work so I could sit and read. It was perfect.Dhruvo
Yes, it was written in the 1970's, and some of the dialogue feels funny now, but re-reading King's second novel reminds me yet again, how good his early work is. And this illustrated edition is nicely printed with good paper and interesting photo montages that are suggestive rather than literal. Another bonus is the new forward by the author, explaining his inspiration for the story and his childhood love of Bram Stokers Dracula. There are also two short stories that came before the novel, and some deleted sections of the book printed here for the first time. If you love early Stephen King, this is quite the bargain, and worthy of space on your bookshelf.man.child

8. Fairy Tale [Book]

Product Details:
A #1 new york times bestseller and new york times book review editors' choice! legendary storyteller stephen king goes into the deepest well of his imagination in this spellbinding novel about a seventeen-year-old boy who inherits the keys to a parallel world where good and evil are at war, and the stakes could not be higher—for that world or ours.charlie reade looks like a regular high school kid, great at baseball and football, a decent student. but he carries a heavy load. his mom was killed in a hit-and-run accident when he was seven, and grief drove his dad to drink. charlie learned how to take care of himself—and his dad. when charlie is seventeen, he meets a dog named radar and her aging master, howard bowditch, a recluse in a big house at the top of a big hill, with a locked shed in the backyard. sometimes strange sounds emerge from it. charlie starts doing jobs for mr. bowditch and loses his heart to radar. then, when bowditch dies, he leaves charlie a cassette tape telling a story no one would believe. what bowditch knows, and has kept secret all his long life, is that inside the shed is a portal to another world. king’s storytelling in fairy tale soars. this is a magnificent and terrifying tale in which good is pitted against overwhelming evil, and a heroic boy—and his dog—must lead the battle. early in the pandemic, king asked himself: “what could you write that would make you happy?” “as if my imagination had been waiting for the question to be asked, i saw a vast deserted city—deserted but alive. i saw the empty streets, the haunted buildings, a gargoyle head lying overturned in the street. i saw smashed statues (of what i didn’t know, but i eventually found out). i saw a huge, sprawling palace with glass towers so high their tips pierced the clouds. those images released the story i wanted to tell.”
Reviews:
This book was fantastic. The story is gentle whimsical and character driven. I loved the story and was moved by the journey of the characters and read the book in three days. Easy to read, enjoyable and moving. Less a traditional horror and more a comment on the strength and love that and people can hold onto throughout even the most difficult of timesJackie
Only one of three novels by King that I enjoyed. No let me be clearer; one of the best novels out of ten that I have ever read. BTW the other two were the one about the Kennedy Assassination and the novel he collaborated on with Peter Straub. I can't wait for the movie; hope they don't spoil it I wouldn't change a thing.Rosemarie
I have to admit this was my first Stephen King read! I like many have seen and know all of the movie adaptations based on his books. However, I had never read a single King novel until Fairy Tale. I loved this book and would recommend to anyone! I usually prefer quick reads, books that are fast paced, and no more than 300 pages. Like my mom told me “if it’s good you will want to keep reading no matter how many pages.” She was right and that might be why I have never picked up a Stephen King book until now. I am excited to read his other works now. Fairy Tale keeps you engaged and excited to get back to reading. 🙌Livvynme

How did Stephen King come up with something as horrid as this? And why do I feel guilty for loving it so much? There were a few parts of this novel which made me actually feel sick, and I applaud King for having a book have that much power. This book is also claustrophobic, extremely claustrophobic!Al Likes Stephen 'The King' King
There is no doubt that this now-classic release from the world's Master of Suspense and the Supernatural is an unequivocal masterpiece of psychological terror and suspense in its own right. The story is based principally on two characters – popular writer Paul Sheldon, who is caught trying to drive through a heavy snow storm in Sidewinder, Colorado. He loses control of his car trying to take a bend, and nearly loses his life in the process. The second major character of the book is Annie Wilkes, a former professional nurse who, quite literally, brings Sheldon back to life with on-the-spot CPR and other life saving skills before dragging Sheldon back to her home for 'recuperation'. Strange facts are revealed about Wilkes as the reader progresses through the opening salvo of the book. For instance, hints at Wilkes' doubtful past and performance as a Nurse, and legal action taken against her, which is only hinted at by Mr King, cast doubts over the nature of the "care" being given to her famous patient whilst he lies at death's door. Mr King takes only a few dozen pages to prove that psychologically, the woman is not sound. She has a violent temper, and is prone to lose control of her wits at the slightest provocation. And yet it is only a few paragraphs into the book that Mr King has his reader by the throat. A life saving gesture, one which is almost second nature to those familiar with basic first aid in the 21st century, is given virtual shock treatment by the author in a parallel universe kind of way, with four brilliantly gripping and terrifying paragraphs on pages four and five of the 2011 UK Paperback edition. I won't reveal them here, but seriously, read these pages for the first time, and YOU. WILL. BE. HOOKED. Somehow our demented nurse manages to discover how it all ends for her favourite character in literature, and she is not pleased. Not pleased at all. I wont say what happens, or how she responds, but it is certainly not good news for Paul Sheldon, writer extraordinaire. The first part of the book ends with a spine tingling, breath-catching escapade of exultation and terror for Our Paulie as he dares to venture beyond the walls of his cell and begins to explore THE HOUSE. Salvation is found – albeit temporarily – when a healthy supply of pain killers is located in a pantry cupboard, but of course the Book's Baddie – Nurse Annie, who is on a shopping trip into town for writing materials, of all things – comes home far too soon for our liking, and that is when your pulse will hit the roof as Sheldon learns what true terror is as he races back to bed before Satan (sorry, Nurse Annie) finds him in a state of relative freedom. This book is relatively small for a King novel. It comprises a total of four parts, and sits rather easily in the hand at 369 magnificent pages. In summary, however: This much-fabled fable is awesome. It is frighteningly real in its representation of domesticity, and the times when the relationship sours into one of horrific cruelty and terror, the reader (who is comfortable with the genre) will love every single moment. Constant Readers will thank their lucky stars for their good sense and decision making abilities when they decided to become Stephen king fans. And Newbies may well decide to jump on the SK band wagon, too. There is violence here, folks. And terror. And, believe it or not, sprinkles of joy and happiness, not to mention satisfaction for a job well done. But none of these lighter emotions belong to the book's principal character. But for how long? Will Paul Sheldon find peace, happiness, or even freedom from the deranged nurse that forced him back to life from the brink of death way back in chapter one? And what about Nurse Annie? Paul Sheldon's Number One Fan? Will she be saved from herself, given the chance at redemption in a safe place, or will she learn too late that her number has come up? Read this horrific work of art and see for yourself. A perfect full marks from moi. BFN Greggorio!GREGGORIO

Reviews:
I just finished this book and i love it! It was however $20 which is way more than I would usually pay for a book, but it was more than worth it. This book is basically two in one. Without spoiling anything I would say that the book is so detailed you can really imagine it as you read. Which is great…for most of the book. It definitely has a very questionable part however, and i would only recommend reading it if you aren't grossed out easily.liam.b
I'm a huge King fan. This is the first King book I ever read. I was in high school and I was a big reader, someone recommended it to me. I couldn't put it down. And I couldn't sleep! I love how King weaves such amazing histories for small town USA and Derry has become a favorite haunt for King fans. It is a little long in some of the history of Derry places, but it's an amazing story about friendship and a promise. And of course theres the terrifying clown that everyone remembers. Grab a copy and settle down for a long read and a very long night. We all float down here.heather.a

Reviews:
When you have read everything an author writes you know that you're not going to like all of them equally. This could be called number 4 in the Hodges trilogy, even though the eponymous hero of that trilogy is now gone. Either way I did find it a story of 2 parts, part 1 the crime & part 2 the solving of that crime. Unlike some others I wasn't disappointed with the supernatural element of this story but I did feel it was a little heavy handed/long-winded, with the historical explanations of the "entity". So it's not his best or worst but it's still a bloody good read.
So so good. I found this at target (stuck with that awful sticker on the cover) and bought it based on the back blurb alone. I'm a Stephen king fan already and knew I wouldn't be disappointed. It was a scary lengthy read that gave me IT vibes. It kept me up at night with its creepiness. Would definitely suggest others to read if you enjoy a supernatural thriller.heather.g
This is definitely one of the great Stephen King books, up there with IT. I found that keeping a name and function list was a great help as there a quite a few characters. The subject is grusome but kept at a reasonable distance. Top scene, the detective ont eh toilelt withe monster appearing behind the shower screen Snobs will say its not a great novel. It is very American in social reference. Outsider as a horror detective story: unbeatable..EdwardBbear

A riveting and unforgettable story of kids confronting evil. Stephen King writes an unforgettable book about true evil, where adults have no problem torturing and performing medical tests on children for the "greater good." In this most sinister of institutions, the director, Mrs. Sigsby, and her staff are ruthlessly dedicated to extracting from these children the force of their extranormal gifts. There are no scruples here. If you go along, you get tokens for the vending machines. If you don't, punishment is brutal The Institute is Stephen King's gut-wrenchingly dramatic story of good vs. evil in a world where the good guys don't always win.Susan
Received a paperback! This page needs to be edited. CS told me that they could not edit it for future purchasers, but that if I left a review maybe the poor ratings would allow the change in information by another department? Clearly the title says Hardcover. CS pointed out that the description further down the page states paperback. Bummer. I like Hardcover texts. Chose not to deal with the return and repurchase during COVID-19 quarantine because I really would like to read it. Really thought it was a HC because just recently purchased The Outsider in HC for similar price and had no problems.
15. Under The Dome: A Novel [Book]

Product Details:
Don’t miss the “harrowing” (the washington post) #1 new york times bestselling thriller from master storyteller stephen king that inspired the hit television series, following the apocalyptic scenario of a town cut off from the rest of the world.on an entirely normal, beautiful fall day in chester’s mill, maine, the town is inexplicably and suddenly sealed off from the rest of the world by an invisible force field. planes crash into it and fall from the sky in flaming wreckage, a gardener’s hand is severed as “the dome” comes down on it, people running errands in the neighboring town are divided from their families, and cars explode on impact. no one can fathom what this barrier is, where it came from, and when—or if—it will go away. dale barbara, iraq vet and now a short-order cook, finds himself teamed with a few intrepid citizens—town newspaper owner julia shumway, a physician’s assistant at the hospital, a select-woman, and three brave kids. against them stands big jim rennie, a politician who will stop at nothing—even murder—to hold the reins of power, and his son, who is keeping a horrible secret in a dark pantry. but their main adversary is the dome itself. because time isn’t just short. it’s running out.
Reviews:
This book was recommended by a friend and then the ads for the TV series started and although I am not usually a King fan my interest was piqued. I really enjoyed this book. My curiousity was up from the very beginning. A lot of excitement and drama. I am not sure that I liked the way the book ended but I am sure that a lot of people will. I honestly enjoyed reading it. It is long and it is a very heavy book which makes reading while laying down difficult. I "got in to it" from the beginning, unlike Bag of Bones which I couldn't "get into" but I did like the movie. I am looking forward to the tv series.beachisus
As a teen (late 80's to late 90's) I was an avid Stephen King fan. I then moved on to other aspects of life. While I remained a devout reader of other authors, I never went back to SK. Recently, I decided to renew my interest by collection First Editions. Under The Dome was my first buy (I figured, why not start with his thickest book). It took me 2 minutes to fall back in love with his unique and creative story-telling. I look forward to getting all (58?) books in first editions. Highly recommendedvla071051-9

An excellent Stephen King novel that was written many years ago, but is particularly relevant to current times. Stephen King is definitely one of the best authors the world has ever seen, and "The Stand" is one of his finest novels. A riveting read that is filled with the chills and thrills that we've all come to expect from the king of horror. This is a brand new collectible edition that is beautifully presented in a leather-bound hardcover format. Looks fantastic on the bookshelf. You really can't go wrong with this one. Even if you are not a Stephen King fan, the Dark Tower series is worth reading. It is an intriging story of a magical, dangerous and very complex world that at times becomes connected to the 'real' world. If you are a Stephen King fan, you will soon discover that this other world has broken through and made itself known to you in a lot of your favorite Stephen King books. Whatever your opinion of Stephen King (good writer or hack), the Dark Tower series is good entertainment.wasikfamilyemporium

My wife and I loved the series. Sometimes I get burnt-out on Stephen King, but overall I like his work. My 15 year old daughter is reading The Gunslinger series now and she's enjoying it. I think the 4th book in the series is one of his best overall (Wizard and Glass).simpsonfabrications
