I bought this book for my 11yo son during the iso period to keep him busy and apparently, he has read this as part of reading prog in year 4! So he recommended that I've read it and I'm on the last chapter now. It's been decades since I burnt the midnight oil so I'm on the last chapter now before I can watch the giver movie by Meryl Streep! The book talks a community living in a "dome" where it's climate control, memories with held and lives a very structure livelihood akin to communism somehow but with supernatural powers. Reminds me bit of the Truman show by Jim Carey where it's all not true but a virtual world!JT
Jonas lives in a community that appears, on first acquaintance, to be perfect. It's a world without crime, and with no unemployment—and therefore no poverty—nobody has to suffer hunger pangs, never mind the torment of starvation and homelessness. All members of a family unit share the experiences and “feelings” of their day each evening and nobody lies. Or so Jonas believes. Only when he learns that his lifetime job is to be the Receiver (taking on all the memories of both pain and joy that have been banished from his society, and being given permission to lie) does he realise the community's creators have banished even more good than evil from his society. Jonas and his tutor, the previous Receiver, to whom he gives the title the Giver, decide that the cost of their stable society is too high … Jonas's community clearly doesn't cover the whole world in which it is set, and one doesn't even have to travel over water to reach “Elsewhere”, of which there are hints relatively early in the book. Most members of the community clearly believe that this is where people who are “released” go. Young readers possibly might not guess the truth here but I'm sure adult readers will. For a book with such a complex set-up The Giver is amazingly short at fewer than 200 pages. If it had been a novel for adults I think it would have contained a lot more detail on how this utopian society was set up, because it does leave you asking questions about it. Lowry does, however, give enough detail for the purpose of her story and she handles it deftly, never getting in the way of the forward motion of the plot and therefore taking the risk of boring young readers. I was amazed to hear that The Giver was on the list of "most challenged" books for 2000, on the grounds of "being sexually explicit, having occult themes, violence". I didn't see anything in it that was inappropriate for its audience of young adults and anything of a sexual nature was hinted at rather than "explicit". The Giver is a thoroughly gripping read and beautifully written.
This is an incredible book and I loved every minute of it. The story line is intriguing from the beginning – set in the future it tells the story of a 'perfect' society that exists where everyone home is uniform. Pain and sadness are unknown in this seemingly perfect world. In the community exists a 'giver' who has been given memories from the past. The book tells the story of Jonas, a 12 year old boy, who has been chosen to receive memories of pain and sadness. He goes on a journey of discovery to see the real meaning behind what is happening in his community. Lois Lowry has done an amazing job writing this book. It toys with the idea of taking away choice from people's lives and creating a world where everyone and everything are very uniform. Her interpretation of that kind of world is simply intriguing. A great read and I would recommend it to anyone.

Have you ever read something that instantly clicked with you? A book you could read a million times and it always feels like coming home? This is that book for me. I relate to Cath, as a teen with social anxiety and a love for fanfiction. It's a good coming of age story, especially for those who struggle with change. I absolutely loved Fangirl! This book is my first taste of the work by Rainbow Rowell, and I thoroughly enjoyed it (I definitely enjoyed it as I kept reading until I finished it at 6am). As a fangirl myself, this book was totally relatable, and I believe it accurately portrays fandom life and culture, and how different people look at fandoms and fanfiction. The story follows the live of Cath Avery during her first year at college. She is a major fan of the book and movie series Simon Snow (which mirrors the Harry Potter series, even though Harry Potter does exist in the Fangirl world) and is a well known fanfiction writer, getting thousands of hits daily on her stories. Her twin sister Wren, who is also a Simon Snow fan, and a co-writer on some of the fanfiction, wants to experience college life, and so pulls away from being a member of the duo, which leaves Cath alone in the strange new world that is college. Cath is soon having feelings for her roommate's supposed boyfriend Levi, and for her writing partner Nick, but she is unaware of how to act on these feelings, or whether they are actually real. With issues with Wren, issues with her father, issues with her mother, and issues with her fanfiction, life is starting to get complicated for Cath, and soon she is falling for a guy. College life can be complicated, especially when its a new and scary world, and filled with a lot of unknown. Pros: I adored the story. As Cath fell in love, I fell in love, because it was so believable and perfect. The entire story was relatable, and I could not stop reading as it was so good. The snippets of Simon Snow, and Cath's fanfiction was a quirky and interesting addition, and made me want to actually read the Simon Snow series, despite it being completely non-existent. As I Harry Potter fan, I could see the similarities between Snow and Potter, and Cath's fanfiction, which I saw mirroring the vast Drarry slash. I can't wait Cath's fanfiction Carry On, which will be released later this year. Cons: For me this book had no faults, except one – I wanted more! The story ended with a Snow excerpt, and I felt that Cath's and *insert love interest here* story was not over. I was slightly disappointed that we didn't get more of a conclusion to the story, but I hope this means we can get a sequel, because I definitely want to read it. Overall, if you read books, you need to read this one! This book is perfect for fangirls, and people with an inner nerd. I loved it and I want more! I will definitely be recommending this to everyone and anyone, and I will definitely be reading it again – it was the perfect read, and I can't wait to read Rainbow Rowell's other books, because she is an amazing author.My Books Are Me
Super sweet story. I can very much relate to the female lead, Cath. The "Clark Kent", socially awkward sister. Since I just finished it, I need a little bit more time to completely process my feelings about the end, but overall, I really enjoyed this book. I think this helps give neurotypical people a glimpse into what it's like to be neurodivergent and deal with mental illness. I appreciate that the author approached the subject well.

Both my husband and I love this book series. We had never heard of the author before and weren't sure about it. Promoted as a teen book, it really is excellent for teens and adults (my restriction is that younger children might find it too disturbing). Extremely well written and compelling. Quite a different story and I think, very thought provoking. This particular copy, I am giving to a friend to enjoy. We have bought the full series. The 3rd and possibly the final book on just came out. It is about death in a world where natural death no longer occurs and how that is made to happen. If that intrigues you, I think you may very well enjoy this book–which is stand alone or you can buy the series. He's created this unique world that is eye-opening and may reveal some of the lengths people would go to to get what they want. These characters are great fun. I usually read these books to my 6 and 8 yr olds and we're often laughing out loud together at the antics of the two main characters. My 8yr old is now reading these on her own. I recommend these to friends as they're highly engaging and fun to read as a parent too. They're now my "go to" gift for birthdays.KB
I bought this book to read with my 4 year old daughter. The main characters are mean spirited. It teaches children to keep secrets from their parents—and you wouldn’t know it from the description, but there is a lot of witchcraft involved in the book. Do your research before purchasing to see if this is a good fit for your child.Jenna
I began to purchase Ivy and Bean books as an alternative to Junie B Jones books. My daughter loved Junie b books but she absolutely loves and prefers Ivy and Bean books. They are written well, grammatically speaking, this series is better than Junie b books. If your child enjoys Junie b then he/she will love Ivy and Bean books.crystal_v

But the depth of story and the detailed account of his various survival techniques have made many question whether the story was true. The novel won a Pulitzer Prize and became an American classic, no wonder they include it in the school program in States. Also, a wonderful film (starring Gregory Peck) was made out of it. Gosh, this is one of my new all time favorite books! It's just a shame that I will never be able to fully express how and why it affected me as much as it did. But I can try my best to at least write a few words to let you know what things I enjoyed (spoiler: I enjoyed every single word). This story deals with the very important and sensitive topic of racism and is told from the point of five of a little girl. I had my doubts if this combination would work out. But somehow, Harper Lee was able to create an incredibly compelling character, who understands and misunderstands just the right amounts to be realistic, and to get all the major points the novel is trying to make across. It would have been easy to write from the perspective of Atticus, the 'hero' of the story. But I think this wouldn't have been the right thing to do; it would have seemed far too self-indulgent and conceited. The characters themselves are all incredibly lovely. They just warmed up my heart. I'd love to give those three little kids, Scout and Jem and Dill, a giant hug. I'd like to shake the hand of Atticus and pay him my respects. I would go to Church with Calpurnia and find out more about her life. I would smile at Boo, to let him know that I accept him just the way he is, and while a simple smile might seem like a typical interaction to others, I'm sure it would mean a lot to Boo.anna.g

Malala lives in Pakistan and is a brave and strong girl who speaks out for female education. This story shows how much terrorism can affect people. It was quite sad to hear Malala write about all the schools being bombed and demolished overnight and having to hide her books while walking to school. The hope and bravery that Malala gave to so many girls is remarkable. It gave people the courage to fight for their education. I thought that it was an amazing book, it inspired me to think about the people who have been band from going to school and made me feel so lucky to live in a country that encourages education for everyone. Having read this book made me want to know more about the Taliban and how many people are affected by their dreadful rules and learn more about Pakistan, it's people and culture.Crazy cupcake

Multiple lines are printed on top of each other which makes it difficult/impossible to read them. Not only in the distant past, or in the time of Nelly Bly and Jacob Riis, but from 1947 until 1987 right here in the US. This is a fictionalized story about horrible things that actually did happen and the bravery and fortitude of one young woman who overcame/survived and then went on to help others to learn to live with what happened to them.
