I could not wait until this last installment of the Harry Potter series finally hit the shelves. I reserved my copy months in advance at my local Walden Books store. I even started counting down the days until its release. Yet once I had the book in my hands, I felt a mixture of excitement, anticipation and regret. After all these years of waiting for the next installment, ever since I finished the first book, I was finally going to read my last Harry Potter book. I could not wait to find out how Harry, Hermione, and Ron's journey would end, but I couldn't help feeling upset that, once read, it would be over. No more staying excited for the next installment to arrive. That being said, once I cracked open my crisp copy of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, the pang of regret I had felt about this being over gave way to an overwhelming happiness to be back in this wonderful world of magic J.K. Rowling created. Once I had started, it was all over. I could not stop reading. I had to force myself away from the pages to eat. Each page revealed just enough to make it a necessity to read the next. As any Harry Potter fan knows, this series is so gripping, each line begs you to read the next. Speaking of The Hallows specifically, I would have to say that it is an edge of your seat story, the most spine-tingling of the 7 book series, and Rowling wastes no timing jumping into the thick of it in the first chapters. Many chapters, I had the feeling of walking through a haunted house, every muscle tense in anticipation of the next arm-twisting details. Hallows throws twists and turns at you every few pages throughout the entire book. As it is the 7th book and the main characters are reaching maturity, the books content is much more adult in nature. There is not much more I am comfortable saying, without giving away precious pieces of the final books plots. It was a wonderfully written, emotional rollercoaster that can be ridden over and over again. After having read Book 7 twice, I am still amazed by J.K. Rowling. It is mystifying how much detail and planning went into these books. The character development, the subplots, the reference towards other epic stories written in history. Coming into the 7th installment, you would not think it possible to tie up so many tresses as Rowling did. There have also been, looking back, so many clues and hints in the previous 6 books towards the ending of this adventure. This series is a very complex story, which Rowling wrote for children; however, I would have to disagree with these being children's books. In writing the Harry Potter series, J.K. Rowling has inadvertently intertwined the literary worlds of child and adult. The Harry Potter series, I believe, will be on the bookshelves of child and adult alike for generations to come.system_skins
Harry Potter lands his broom in the adult world with a thud. Well written if a bit drawn out when he is "on the run". Still the reader is left not disillusioned, merely pensive about the course of life, death, loss & joy. The love and support of friends and family is the backbone that keeps the story upright and walking proudly to its conclusion – reality. I hope that Harry and Ginnie have many madcap kids that can follow in their footsteps in a less dark and forbidding world than Harry's generation grew up in. This is a universal wish of all who have grown older and wiser but it is seldom realized as history shows. I cried towards the end of this book as I did before at Dumbledore's death. I understood it more. This is a testomony to the writer, J.K. Rowling who has emotionally matured the audience, the reader as well as the characters thoughout this odyssey. Bravo!aussiekate1

There are so many typos in this manual that I'm wondering if it's a copy rather than an original. How can something this well read not have had these corrected by now? Did no-one prof read it? Easily one typo per page. Every (except for headings for some reason) time 'orc' occurs in the manual it's printed as 'ore'. But there are lots and lots of other typos and weird corrupted words. I can nearly always work out what the intent of the sentence was but it's surprising that SO MANY errors made it to print. That said it's a good manual, sturdy hard-back construction. A few things could be explained better but all in all still worth purchasing, unless there is a newer edition or re-print available in which case (assuming the errors have been fixed) I'd recommend getting that edition instead.ablac-8
It's all here for creating characters for the most famous role-playing game. It seems like such a time commitment to play a game like this. Even as a teenager it was hard to find others to commit to playing (just reading the rules is a big commitment!). But for me the books are a beautiful nostalgia trip (I played D&D in the 80s) and fun just to read. Maybe I'll convince people to play with me one of these days!Micah M
This is probably my favorite edition of D&D yet. Gone are 4e's miniature combat focus and the abusability of 3e/3.5e, 5e is a refreshing journey back to 2e sensibilities while also acknowledging the advancements pen and paper RPGs have made over the years. One of the hall marks of this newest system is the notion of bounded accuracy which is this design notion to keep numbers from bloating and instead uses a system of advantage and disadvantage (roll 2d20, taking higher or lower result respectively). This also helps keep the need for a constant stream of magic items to a minimum that tended to plague higher level play in 4e, making the ones you do get really exciting. In an attempt to streamline the rules and breath some simplicity back into the game, this edition is plagued at times by muddled wording. The action economy we've grown used to between 3.5/Pathfinder/4e is more or less still there, but the language around is awkward as the writers seem to be trying to acknowledge it's still there. As with any system, there's a ton of debate over certain ambiguous wording of abilities, feats, spells, etc. but this edition does a great job of reinforcing the role of the DM and letting people play the way they want to play. While the newest edition of D&D is on the pricier side, the book itself is beautiful and you can tell where they can get off on charging a bit more. This is certainly one of the best illustrated rule books I've ever seen.Sir L

True Believer at the beginning of the read was a little slow and wordy reminiscent of the South African author Wilber Smith, towards the middle of the novel, the action really picked up and became a satisfying read. This is the sequel to The Terminal List, and is an even better book. I became a Jack Carr fan shortly after hearing him interviewed on Jocko Podcast; I look forward to his future books. This one has the most intense close combat scene I've ever read in it, besides just being a great story. I love this book because reading about the places, events, groups, etc. fires my imagination and gives me ideas for creating my own campaigns, adventures, and stories. The book is mostly that. 40 pages of places, history, gods and their portfolios. 60 pages of more detailed places. 20 pages of how all the races fit into the world, 25 more pages of class options, 10 pages of backgrounds. So for players, there's 35 pages of extra options. No new magic items, only a few cantrips to fit the new class options. No monsters or familiars. I originally bought this book for my Children's Literature class at University, and it is an excellent example of a children's book done right. The characters are well established and the plot is easy to follow. It may not be unsuitable for very young children (a lot of toilet/rude humour and blood/death is brought up a few times) but children around 7-11 should love it. The story is a great read even for older people like myself and very easy too. A lot of the text is broken down with unique illustrations and dragon fact files so it's great at keeping the attention of younger kiddies. What I love about this book was the way it took a fairly overused plot ("loser" kid is bullied and outcast, but eventually proves himself to be a hero) and turned it into something nicely unique. Over all this book is definitely worth buying, especially if you loved the movie. Dreamworks took a lot of liberties with it though, so the book is very different from the film!x.infinity.x
This is the second book in the series. Both my boys, who are 6 and 8, are enjoying this series and Hiccup's dragon Tootless is their favourite character. There friends are now starting to read these books to themselves and they are popular. They are easy to read and have lots of illustrations so that the 6 year old is kept entertained as I read to him. In fact , he has started to read some of the words himself. If you like these books you may also like other series such as Charlie Small, Beast Quest, Deltora Quest, The Floods, Spiderwick and Roald Dahl (especially The Twits, The Enormous Chrocdile and Danny the champion of the world).
I thought this was the book version of the movie that covers this book front and back. However in tiny print at the very tip top, it says "the original book that inspired the movie" – since the Image is the "new movie" that is what I thought it meant. It really means the very original book that inspired the very "first" movie. My child and I were extremely disappointed as a huge understatement. I went out of my way to order from Target, as I'm moving to support *other* online companies, but I can't recommend ordering D&D books from Target. I've ordered several and the first 2 arrived today (Eberron and Icewind Dale: Rime of the Frostmaiden), each in their own seperate boxes, and both were packaged EXTREMELY poorly (and that's being generous). As you can see from the photos, Eberron came without *ANY* packaging and got dinged up pretty good. I can't tell you how frustrating it is to buy a new book and have it damaged. Going through Target's "Fix an Issue" is a bit of a joke too as the only options are to return the books or get a refund. Why bother with an exchange if they're going to send out and damage another book? I WOULD recommend the books, but I WOULDN'T recommend getting them from Target, unless you can find them in stock at your local store.NateB

It is intended to be for the Fifth Age, but there are too many references for the War of the Lance. The drawings should really be better, but there is enough of them to call it a good reference, specially for races and maps.
