2. The Doctors Blackwell: How Two Pioneering Sisters Brought Medicine To Women And Women To Medicine [Book]
Product Details:
New york times bestseller finalist for the 2022 pulitzer prize in biography "janice p. nimura has resurrected elizabeth and emily blackwell in all their feisty, thrilling, trailblazing splendor." —stacy schiff elizabeth blackwell believed from an early age that she was destined for a mission beyond the scope of "ordinary" womanhood. though the world at first recoiled at the notion of a woman studying medicine, her intelligence and intensity ultimately won her the acceptance of the male medical establishment. in 1849, she became the first woman in america to receive an m.d. she was soon joined in her iconic achievement by her younger sister, emily, who was actually the more brilliant physician. exploring the sisters’ allies, enemies, and enduring partnership, janice p. nimura presents a story of trial and triumph. together, the blackwells founded the new york infirmary for indigent women and children, the first hospital staffed entirely by women. both sisters were tenacious and visionary, but their convictions did not always align with the emergence of women’s rights—or with each other. from bristol, paris, and edinburgh to the rising cities of antebellum america, this richly researched new biography celebrates two complicated pioneers who exploded the limits of possibility for women in medicine. as elizabeth herself predicted, "a hundred years hence, women will not be what they are now."

4. One Doctor: Close Calls, Cold Cases, And The Mysteries Of Medicine [Book]
Product Details:
Told by a unique voice in american medicine, this epic story recounts life-changing experiences in the career of a distinguished physician, and is described by the new york times as “a true service [to history]. dr. reilly deserves a resounding bravo for telling it like it is.” malcolm gladwell agrees: “brendan reilly has written a beautiful book about a forgotten subject—what it means for a physician to truly care for a patient.” every review of one doctor noted its beautiful writing and compelling story, the riveting tension and suspense. “remarkable with heart-pounding pace and drama” (publishers weekly); “a gripping, moving memoir” (abraham verghese); “a terrific read” (the boston globe); “an astonishingly moving and incredibly personal account of a modern doctor” (the lancet). in compelling first-person prose, dr. brendan reilly takes readers to the front lines of medicine today. whipsawed by daily crises and frustrations, reilly must deal with several daunting challenges simultaneously. as reilly’s patients and their families survive close calls, struggle with heartrending decisions, and confront the limits of medicine’s power to cure, one doctor lays bare a fragmented, depersonalized, business-driven health care system where real caring is hard to find. every day, reilly sees patients who fall through the cracks and suffer harm because they lack one doctor who knows them well and relentlessly advocates for their best interests. filled with fascinating characters in new york city and rural new england—people with dark secrets, mysterious illnesses, impossible dreams, and limitless courage—one doctor tells their stories with sensitivity and empathy, reminding us of professional values once held dear by all physicians.
Reviews:
Excellent. Recommended to me by a doctor I deeply respect. I've bought five copies and am sharing them with friends. Last week my primary care physician and I skipped our usual annual physical and instead discussed the implications of changes in how medicine works in America — changes called to my attention by Dr. Reilly's stories. I am now MUCH better prepared for what awaits me if my wife or I have a medical crisis. The bottom line is: your primary care physician will probably be of little or no help to you if you are hospitalised. Worse, no one — unless you find a layman willing to take on the job — will keep an eye on what is happening to you as you move from health to hospital to rehab to home care. Drugs will get screwed up, side effects will go unnoticed, and crucial monitoring will fail to take place because very few of us enjoy, these days, what many of us still think we have — ONE DOCTOR who knows us, knows our history, and has our best interests and preferences in mind. By telling his experience as one doctor (though far from an ordinary doctor — Reilly is that rare fellow who still sees patients but also has been a top hospital administrator), including some highly instructive medical mysteries that he has encountered, Reilly shows how the practice of medicine has turned into a big business with a worrisome division of labor that drastically changes our prospects. An ancient and honoured profession is in danger of being replaced with a profit-oriented business model in which the customer's interests are often lost completely. VERY sobering. A must-read for anyone over 50.eisenmanmathware
5. What Doctors Don't Get To Study In Medical School [Book]
Product Details:
This used book is in acceptable condition. this book provides part of the important and formative reading a medical student must do outside the prescribed requirements for a degree, and is also equally valuable to qualified practitioners and medical professionals. here, laid out clearly and concisely, are all the well-established potholes and pitfalls in current medical thinking and practice. it is a thought provoking challenge to modern medical practice and research and is intended to encourage us to consider the way medicine is taught. modern medical practices are driven by science, technology and consumerism, with the cost of treatment weighted in favour of the doctor rather than to the benefit of the patient. dr. hegde confronts the issue, and proposes an alternative humanistic attitude to education and treatment. drawing on a huge range of resources from sanskrit texts, green and european philosophers, ancient and modern healers, to the most up to date western research and publications – he has written a book that is both scholarly yet easy to read, a polemic against and an appreciate of the art and practice of medicine, and which will appeal to everyone involved in medicine whether students, practitioners or patients.

The book very accurately describes many of the issues faced by young and old alike when facing their own mortality or that of a loved one. It is written in simple terms that are easy to understand. The content is difficult to read emotionally, especially for anyone who has faced these issues, but all of us need to confront end-of-life decisions. I would highly recommend this book.bobwoods1953
This book is amazing Gawande, with such compassion, spells out the complexities of planning for life's daunting journey through serious debilitating illness possibilities and aging. At 83 and 77, my husband and I both felt some clarity for ourselves about decisions we have made or need to make now to, as best we can at this point, live our best lives to the end.guillmarth_hthrqhv
This book was recommended by a friend, as my 85 year old mother is going through some very difficult times. Not only has her world distinctly changed, so it goes for myself and four other siblings. The information contained within this book is easy to comprehend and I found it very insightful on the subject at hand. The stories within the book are real, therefore making it easy to relate with my journey. I highly recommend to everyone, as the majority of us will eventually encounter the process of accepting and coping with one or more aging parents.tapa9123

12. When Doctors Become Patients [Book]
Product Details:
For many doctors, their role as powerful healer precludes thoughts of ever getting sick themselves. when they do, it initiates a profound shift of awareness– not only in their sense of their selves, which is invariably bound up with the "invincible doctor" role, but in the way that they view their patients and the doctor-patient relationship. while some books have been written from first-person perspectives on doctors who get sick– by oliver sacks among them– and tv shows like "house" touch on the topic, never has there been a "systematic, integrated look" at what the experience is like for doctors who get sick, and what it can teach us about our current health care system and more broadly, the experience of becoming ill.the psychiatrist robert klitzman here weaves together gripping first-person accounts of the experience of doctors who fall ill and see the other side of the coin, as a patient. the accounts reveal how dramatic this transformation can be– a spiritual journey for some, a radical change of identity for others, and for some a new way of looking at the risks and benefits of treatment options. for most however it forever changes the way they treat their own patients. these questions are important not just on a human interest level, but for what they teach us about medicine in america today. while medical technology advances, the health care system itself has become more complex and frustrating, and physician-patient trust is at an all-time low. the experiences offered here are unique resource that point the way to a more humane future.

19. Fundamentals Of Clinical Practice: A Textbook On The Patient, Doctor, And Society [Book]
Product Details:
Fundamentals of clinical practice is an introductory textbook focusing on the patient physician relationship. formerly closeted behind closed doors, this most intimate of healing relationships is coming under increasing scientific scrutiny. to facilitate the reader's exploration of the patient-physician relationship, all chap ters include numerous illustrative cases and conclude with cases for discussion that allow small groups of learners to tackle these difficult issues. our hypothesis is that through discussion a deeper understanding of the dynamics of the patient-physician relationship will allow medical students and other future healthcare providers to form more effective therapeutic relationships with their patients. part i of this textbook, "the patient," explores the relationship through the patient's perspective, with chapters on human health and disease and individual and family devel opment. understanding the patient's perspective is critical to establishing a sound thera peutic relationship. the day when a physician could maintain solely a disease or techno logical perspective is fading fast under the weight of patient criticism, particularly in primary care fields. patients judge such a disease or technological perspective as less humane and frequently vote with their feet, finding other physicians who are much better able to balance the caring aspects of medicine with the curing.
