There are many books on Audio Engineering, but this one is edited by an expert, and each chapter is written by someone who can take the technical aspects as well as the descriptive text and make them both accessible (until my A level math from 40+years ago lets me down!!)…. one of my favourite books on the subject.cpasales2014

Reviews:
I am a producer/composer/engineer and I'm always looking to learn. I purchased "Mastering Audio" by Bob Katz to learn more about mastering and the theory behind it. This book is the holy grail for every audio professional. I already had pretty good mastering technique but this book has given me better understanding as to why my methods worked and given new insight about the process in general. If you are interested in mastering and don't know where to start, I recommend this book.rockmasterflizz
Although this book is ostensibly about mastering audio, it is also a fantastic reference for setting up and using audio equipment properly, understanding some of the trickier concepts and achieving good practice in the audio field. It's a little advanced for beginners, but it's still quite readable. It clearly explains some of the debated technical topics in audio, and is one of my first go-to books when I need to clarify something technical.
Accurate and informative!kirk-markarian

Excellent presentation and detailbillm9966
It is what it is, and what it is, IS the basis for most informed discussions (even if there's disagreement) on just what the title describes. I bought it to better understand modern High Fidelity design. I get to audit this course, so I consider myself lucky. Of course there have been breakthroughs since this book was written, but this is the "Old Testament" and as such is still worth having as a reference work.megachops

Reviews:
I have the other two books in this "Handbook" series and they were very useful and insightful with tips and tricks on how to make certain processes work. I felt this book fell short because it really only goes as far as describing the processes involved. After reading it, I feel like I know more about what is involved, but, am still stuck in the "how do I get the results I want?" state. I don't feel like the book holds up next to "The Recording Engineer's Handbook" and "The Mixing Engineer's Handbook."jhamil5506
Good all around book. Very informativeash100
Bobby goes step by step with actual procedures and numbers as well as theory. He covers mastering for all the major players in the digital realm. This book and his Mixing book are very valuable resources. I have learned way, way more than the price of the books merits from both. Highly recommended.floeclay

Reviews:
This is a good book. It is comprehensive in terms of what is covered and gives a lot of good templates and theory to use. Just be aware though that more specialized approaches to studio construction will require in-depth knowledge in an area related to that activity. For example doing construction on professional studios is best left for professionals who do this for a living. All in all though, a lot of good material to go through but if you really want a proper understanding then look at each part and find resources that specialize in that activity.Chiro
Photos of recording studios. The book has a lot of diagrams and technical info, but not one photo of an actual professional studio in the book. There are a few tiny images on the cover, but I was looking for ideas based on other recording studio designs. I hate to actually give negative feedback, as the book is very technical if you're looking for just specs.pad88

There isn't much technical data in the book and I have no way of deciding if the advice about getting in the audio sound business is accurate or relevant. Might be a good book for getting started in audio mixing but you have to get your technical knowledge another way. I put mine on sale immediately.guitars_history

16. Small Signal Audio Design [Book]

Product Details:
Small signal audio design is a highly practical handbook providing an extensive repertoire of circuits that can be assembled to make almost any type of audio system. the publication of electronics for vinyl has freed up space for new material, (though this book still contains a lot on moving-magnet and moving-coil electronics) and this fully revised third edition offers wholly new chapters on tape machines, guitar electronics, and variable-gain amplifiers, plus much more. a major theme is the use of inexpensive and readily available parts to obtain state-of-the-art performance for noise, distortion, crosstalk, frequency response accuracy and other parameters. virtually every page reveals nuggets of specialized knowledge not found anywhere else. for example, you can improve the offness of a fader simply by adding a resistor in the right place- if you know the right place. essential points of theory that bear on practical audio performance are lucidly and thoroughly explained, with the mathematics kept to an absolute minimum. self's background in design for manufacture ensures he keeps a wary eye on the cost of things. this book features the engaging prose style familiar to readers of his other books. you will learn why mercury-filled cables are not a good idea, the pitfalls of plating gold on copper, and what quotes from star trek have to do with pcb design. learn how to: make amplifiers with apparently impossibly low noise design discrete circuitry that can handle enormous signals with vanishingly low distortion use humble low-gain transistors to make an amplifier with an input impedance of more than 50 megohms transform the performance of low-cost-opamps build active filters with very low noise and distortion make incredibly accurate volume controls make a huge variety of audio equalisers make magnetic cartridge preamplifiers that have noise so low it is limited by basic physics, by using load synthesis sum, switch, clip, compress, and route audio signals be confident that phase perception is not an issue this expanded and updated third edition contains extensive new material on optimising riaa equalization, electronics for ribbon microphones, summation of noise sources, defining system frequency response, loudness controls, and much more. including all the crucial theory, but with minimal mathematics, small signal audio design is the must-have companion for anyone studying, researching, or working in audio engineering and audio electronics.

I have been recording for over 20 years, first with a Fostex 4-track, and now using my computer and Cakewalk software. This book taught me how to get the sound that I always wanted. I though it was the equipment I was using that was limiting me, but in in many cases it was just because I did not know the best methods. So many tricks and tips from different producers & engineers! Whatever style of music you make, I guarantee this book will make a difference in how polished your finished product sounds!yodeee
This book goes way beyond what other books on the subject do. It has input and advice from some of todays top mixing engineers in all genres! You won't find my copy on ebay anytime soon, as I have found this book to be an invaluable asset to my library and will reference it for years to come!djnuckinfuts
A lil outdated but the overall concept are a good base to start and give you the fundamentals towards mixing.olfkin

I purchased this book as an attempt to further understand the Mixing/Mastering processes of my own audio projects and it does have some interesting information. If you are looking to gain an understanding of Mastering process and have little or no basic audio theory, then this book will speak over your head. Read up and become familiar with concepts like Jitter, Unity, dbFS, and phase concellation and signal flow (just to name a few) before you look into this book.(Understanding Audio from Berklee Press is a good starting point) Otherwise, I found it to be a book with some good information, but I did not find it as usefull as I had hoped. The overuse of interviews from people in the industry did not appeal to me – eventhough there were some jems of information contained in them, there was not enough usefull information to make this book a must have.hakkama30
