Being a new mum i thought i needed some guidance on the whole parenting front. I'd seen a few of the baby whisperers programmes and so i was keen to purchase this book. Flicking through i was dismayed to find that i was apparently doing everything wrong! After spending almost an entire day sobbing about what a failure i was as a mum i actually threw the book in the bin! (First time i have ever thrown a book away!) So a word of advice to anyone thinking of getting this book- Are you sure you really need it? We all have different ways of doing things and what works for one person may not work for someone else. Since ditching the book 80 percent of my worries have sorted themselves out and the other 20 percent? Well, what kind of mother would i be if i wasn't worried about my baby in some way, shape or form? All i'm saying is that The baby whisperer may well be a blooming genius but at the end of the day my baby is 6 weeks old and slowly getting to know her mummy as her mummy is getting to know her. My family is expanding and I wanted a refresher on child care to prepare me to be a grandmother. I was so excited about this book and the common sense that these women teach, that I went and got two more copies for my daughters. They also found the book very down to earth and helpful. The book details how to recognize and attend to the babies' cries and how to help babies sleep all night. It encourages middle of the ground care – no extremes in parenting but just common sense on how to raise a baby. I am eager to purchase the Toddler Whisperer book so I can continue to learn. Before becoming parents, we took the online quiz associated with this book, and failed, so bought the book. Having watched friends and family raise children, we were able to see how correct some contents of the book were about results later in life. It helped us avoid big mistakes, and changed some of our approaches to parenting. I'd flip back through the book in certain sections when we struggled to figure out where our familiar child went, read what was going on, and adapted accordingly, and the strange bout of tantrums ceased. This is the only "parenting" book I ever read or utilized, and my kids are well beyond the first 5 years now. They are happy, and we get complimented for them, and our parenting, all the time by those we know and strangers alike. This purchase is a gift for a pregnant friend. Dr. Sears promotes parents do what feels right and trust their judgment. The book covers many topics. Milestones, growth charts, feeding, bathing, potty training, discipline, health and fevers, when to see a doctor. A previous reviewer cautioned against sleeping with your baby in bed with you, I completely promote it. I brought my babies into bed with me (now ages 1 and 3) and it was easily the best choice we made as a family. Many books are against it, but I believe it was the one thing that kept me sane during the first weeks of constant wake up and it was a time of bounding I would never want to miss. I bought these to try and help teach my little one basic words. What you’d think would be inside generally isn’t, quite disappointed for the money spent, wish I’d have just bought a 100 word picture book or something instead for a fraction of the price. Bought in store but they were wrapped so I couldn’t look inside the books. If I could return I would but I doubt they’ll take them back now they’re open.
