Reviews:
Wonderful beginning book Very helpfulDEENA
This one-hundred-and-sixty-six-page paperback targets those who want to learn more about planning, planting, and maintaining a vegetable garden. After an introduction, the book is divided into two sections with a total of eight chapters that cover the topic. It ends with a zone map, resources, references, index, acknowledgments, and the author's biography. Divided into two sections, the first part of this read focuses on explaining how to plan, build, plant, maintain, and harvest a vegetable garden. The second part has descriptions, tips, and requirements for both cool and warm-season vegetables along with alliums and herbs. With light green highlighted sections, tan-colored charts, and explanations of when, where, and why to plant over thirty home-grown foods, there are colored illustrations throughout. ~Why ~ This is a very to-the-point book that any gardener-wanna-be can pick up and start immediately. I liked that it covers the tools needed, planting combinations, how to read a seed packet, and common problems and pests. The simple writing on how to grow arugula, broccoli, green peas, spinach, eggplant, melons, okra, cilantro, mint, and thyme and others was informative and concise. ~ Why Not ~ Some may not be interested in books that promote growing your own garden. Others may wish there were more illustrations showing plants, beds, and planting techniques. A few may consider the book rudimentary in detail, which is why it concentrates on beginner gardeners. ~ Wish ~ Although I thought the illustrations were beautiful and detailed, I wish photographs were included instead for a more accurate visual description of the plants, how to plant them, and landscaping suggestions. ~ Want ~ If you are looking for an elementary book on starting a veggie garden, this is a delightful source book. Thanks to Callisto Publisher's Club and the author for this complimentary book that I am under no obligation to review.Connywithay

5. All New Square Foot Gardening [Book]
Product Details:
Do you know what the best feature is in all new square foot gardening? sure, there are ten new features in this all-new, updated book. sure, it’s even simpler than it was before. of course, you don’t have to worry about fertilizer or poor soil ever again because you’ll be growing above the ground. but, the best feature is that "anyone," "anywhere" can enjoy a square foot garden. children, adults with limited mobility, even complete novices can achieve spectacular results. but, let’s get back to the ten improvements. you’re going to love them. 1) new location – move your garden closer to your house by eliminating single-row gardening. square foot garden needs just "twenty percent" of the space of a traditional garden.2) new direction – locate your garden "on top" of existing soil. forget about ph soil tests, double-digging (who enjoys that?), or the never-ending soil improvements.3) new soil – the new "mel’s mix" is the perfect growing mix. best of all, you can even "buy" the different types of compost needed.4) new depth – you only need to prepare a sfg box to a depth of 6 inches! it’s true–the majority of plants develop just fine when grown at this depth.5) no fertilizer – the all new sfg does not need any fertilizer-ever! if you start with the perfect soil mix, then you don’t need to add fertilizer.6) new boxes – the new method uses bottomless boxes placed aboveground. that makes it even easier to kneel, work, and harvest.8)new grids – prominent and permanent grids added to your sfg box help you visualize the planting squares and know how to space for maximum harvest.9)new seed saving idea – the old-fashioned way advocates planting many seeds and then thinning the extras (that means pulling them up). the new method means planting a pinch- literally two or three seeds–per planting hole.10) tabletop gardens – the new boxes are so much smaller and lighter (only 6 inches of soil, remember?), you can add a plywood bottom to make them portable. of course, that’s not all. you’re going to love it!

I would like to thank you for getting the book here so fast. I'm teaching the Boy Scout Merit Badge. Showing the scouts you don't need a lot of room to grow a lot. This book will be use a great deal on showing just how much they can learn and you don't have to work a great deal on getting a lot back. Some of these boys have never ever planted or grew anything before. So this is something very new to them. And I thank you for letting me show them, that they can make a different.usjam.1c1lfc
I bought this book about 3 weeks ago, and it inspired me enough that we have built three of these little gardens since. The author is a little overbearing as in "you have to have a grid" to call it a Square Foot Garden, but I like his ideas about using a raised box, keeping it small enough to work from any side, mixing our own soil, and planting close together. I love his planting charts, so that I know how many plants will fit in each square. Mel's soil mix is made from compost, peat moss, and vermiculite. I could not find large bags of vermiculite, so we used fewer and smaller bags of perlite, so our soil mix isn't exactly the same. I think we could have used the Miracle Grow soil and achieved similar results. We don't have much sunny, flat space for gardens, and our clay soil is so awful that we had previously given up on growing any of our own vegetables, especially root vegetables like beets and radishes. Even the local farmers' markets don't ever offer root crops. Things are starting to sprout, and I am optimistic about my tiny gardens. Now I want to get some compost bins started — I'm just looking for a place to put them.teechr2
Mels method seems like it will be just the thing for our small family. Doesnt require too much yard space or a green thumb. He really explains things thoroughly and builds the info from the basic to the advanced in a nice rhythm. Gives you exactly the materials you need in which quantities so that you can be a successful Square Foot Gardener. Looking forward to putting this instruction to work in my yard soon!cherrybin_harlequin

8. Organic Gardening: The Natural No-Dig Way [Book]
Product Details:
Charles dowding has been practicing no-dig organic growing for over thirty years. in this new, full-color edition of organic gardening he shares the wealth of his experience, explaining his approach to soil and plants and revealing the range of techniques that have enabled him to grow healthy and vibrant plants for decades. his success is based on some key principles:no-dig enhances soil structure and encourages healthy growth, especially when soil life is encouraged and multiplied through the addition of good compost and manure. – organic matter is best spread on the surface – just leave it on top and let the worms take it in, aerating the soil as they do so. – when starting with weedy soil there is a period of three to twelve months, depending on weed types, when the emphasis is on cleaning and improving the soil. – using a no-dig method you can easily control weeds with just a little hand weeding or hoeing every ten days or so, when weeds are small. – based on this approach and his experience with a system of permanent, slightly raised beds, organic gardening: the natural no-dig way shows you how to grow a delicious variety of fruit and vegetables: what to choose; when to sow, plant and harvest; and how best to avoid pests and diseases without the need to dig.

Please check with your local zoning laws before you jump into building chicken coops, etc. Not all areas are keen on some of the ideas in this book.tanjaeubanks
I LOVE this book so far and I'm not even done reading it! It has so many useful tips, and information…lots of answers to questions that I wouldn't have even thought to ask. Everything is really easy to understand (I had no knowledge of how to raise bees, now I do) and very well laid out. Not only is it well written but there are pictures in some cases to help convey what is being said. Perfect! Can't wait for it to be spring/summer so I can start putting some of this into action!elles_1717
This is a great start, if you are trying to get back to basics and live with a little more self sufficiency. I does not have all the answers, but it gives great information to ask the right questions.garrobin_2

Whether you are a keen gardener or in the horticulture industry this book is amazing. Packed with information, it is easily the best plant reference book I have owned. Weighty though, so make sure you have strong knees.Rich
Very comprehensive coverage of just about every garden plant you can think of but note that this is a UK-based publication so the cultivation information given relates most closely to the English climate, which is ok if you're based in Tasmania or other cooler regions such as the Blue Mountains. Australian native plants are covered to some degree but you should look elsewhere if they are your focus.copycath
Excellent as a reference book in a library. Very well researched and presented. Not so good for home use, as it is very bulky and heavy, if you are elderly.elvis3764

Widely recommended by those in the know, and referred to as their primary text on this subject – I bought this book with high expectations. It is highly americanised, with only black and white illustrations, however it is comprehesive and contains useful information on growing/saving vegetable seeds. If you're serious abour seed saving / plant diversity / self sufficiency, and ever wanted to produce seeds for sale/swap, it appears to be a useful reference text. It is not all that encouraging for a beginner / someone thinking about growing/saving plant seeds for the first time, for reuse in their own garden (a more basic text, perhaps covering common flowers also, is what I'm still trying to find…).
There is so much information in this book. I have read it cover to cover and learned so much. I was concerned it would be a little intimidating with too much information to digest. But, this book covers all the details and is explained is easy to read and understand. I feel ready to save seeds for all the varieties I grow.andewinlind
I bought this book to help me get vegetables to actually produce after not much this season. I guess the proof will come next summer but I have learned a lot already. The pictures help illustate the text and were exactly what I wanted to know. I just wish the book was in colour because it would help see the small details on flowers for pollination. I think the author should have aimed for a higher price point with colour.Snow Miser
