Having collected upto 8 cameras ranging from iconic Canon, Olympus, Minolta SLRs and more recently added a Nikon DSLR to this number, I am now motivated to add to my enjoyment by learning the practical yet challenging skills of taking control of all manual settings involved in becoming a keen photographer. This book is a great addition to my budding library. Huzzah.mjajam-uxvnxm
I bought this book after reading other positive reviews. I wish I had read those reviews much earlier and had purchased this book sooner. I have a 35mm film camera and a digital SLR and I was getting tired of getting dark photos when I thought I had things set right. With the great and easy to understand help from this book I have been able to take film shots that are what I expected without wasting film because the shot was not taken with the correct exposure. Bryan has done a great job at explaining how to take a great shot, or should I say exposure, in terms that are very descriptive, clear, and easy to understand.dwclay
Brian Petersen gives visual explanations that are always easy to understand in his precise teaching methods. He gives a brief explanation and then his images highlight his subject. This is a book that I constantly pull from my library for reference and and I always absorb something new.anitagail50

This book is the start of learning about settings on my camera and taking those beautiful pictures. It gives you tasks which helped me alot. It also gives the description of all the settings of the photos in the book, which I thought was fantastic. Easy reading/easy to understand, I want more!Lee
Fantastic! After just a quick skim, I was already taking noticeably better photos. I'm not a photographer by any means, and I generally take some pretty blah pictures. I just couldn't figure out how to translate beautiful things into beautiful photos, but this book has taught me things about my camera that I could never learn from the owners manual. Today I can actually say I take some pretty awesome pics. I'm a hiker and camper and I get the opportunity to see some incredible but isolated things…now it can be just as wonderful to the people I share my photos with.mindybinwv

Reviews:
I had the first Digital Photography book written by Scott Kelby, see my other reviews, and this one is just as good, or better, then the first. The book is a lot easier to understand then most photography books, and is laid out so it is very simple to understand. The layout is as if you are out on a photography trip with the author and ask him a question and he gives you a simple answer on how to do what you asked. It contains a wealth of information that expands on the first book. I would recommend that if you purchase this one to go ahead and purchase the first book as well. I will definitely be looking to see if a third ones is published, and if so will purchase it as well.gnhntn1967
Scott's books are great and I am lucky to find 3 individual books of this set. They are several years old but still the basics rules of photography apply in simple beginner's terms. Easy to read. I love his humor. I also like the reduced cost of buying on ebay. Service and delivery were great.rebeccacantrell
Been buying Scott's books for many years, they are always instructive in regular layman language, well illustrated, and very informative. Highly recommend this book to all digital photographers – I have 60+ years photographic experience, and still manage to learn from Scott. There is a volume 2 of this book, and You'll find more info & tips there.columbiariverlee

Reviews:
This is the reference book for photography, and it should be a text book for all photojournalism classes. Every photography subject is covered in minute detail, with numerous examples throughout the book. The photographs presented in this book are superb, in every way. Anyone would proud of each and every photograph in this book, and it is simply astounding that there are so many. I own three other books by the author and each are just as superbly written as this book. HIGHLY recommended.the_kitegal

Great book. Well written and informative. Goes beyond basics and brings you into next levels. Definitely a good book to read and to own for future referencing and/or just rereading to sharpen your skills. It was mentioned numerous times in a forum I belong to as being an excellent book to buy. So I eventually bought it after reading a copy from a local library and knew I wanted my own copy. Reviews:
I have recently been given the privilege of getting an early release copy of David Molnar's "Learning To See" book. What a privilege it was to be able to read this book. There are so many instructional books about photography out there, but this one is just different. There is so much more than just photography guides and secrets. The author starts out saying "I was never supposed to be a photographer". Boy was he wrong! Right from the first chapter, you will be drawn in. The journey of David Molnar is both motivating and captivating. I wasn't able to put the book down. I will admit that I read it all in one evening. This book was powerful, emotional, honest, and raw. The techniques that are shared here are broken down into such simple, understandable instructions that anyone interested in photography can easily relate and understand. So, whether you're a beginner or novice, you will thoroughly enjoy this book. While reading "Learning To See" you will be taken on the authors journey into photography, from the start, the struggles, the trials, the wins, and the whole time you will feel like you can relate. When he wins, you feel like you also win. The lesson portion of the book, is so simple and easy to understand, and the artwork and images describing things are so well done. This is a true guide book, that anyone would want to keep nearby while they are learning. It is wonderfully written. David Molnar left nothing out. So many times, it seems that photographers tend to keep their best photography secrets to themselves. That is not the case here. This book tells all… "Learning To See" oozes with the passion and devotion that David Molnar has for photography, and his willingness and desire to help others who want to learn. When you're finished, you will have gained a true inside look at who David Molnar is, as well as having learned the foundational instructions on becoming a REAL photographer. This book has it all. The sky's the limit!LNielsen
Edited LEARNING TO SEE I've loved photography since I was a young girl and I always wanted to be able to take beautiful pictures (especially of people). When my son was a baby,I bought my first DSLR camera and started taking pictures of him. That was back in the mid-seventies. I found my new camera to be a mystery and struggled to get good shots unless it was set on auto. I looked at a few books, but honestly, the camera was too complicated for me to figure out on my own. I signed up to take a camera course and it helped some, but I still could not get the results I wanted in manual mode. Fast forward a lifetime. I got better as time went by. I have some decent shots of my kids growing up and some great vacation pictures, but I have far more bad ones. Cameras became digital so it was a lot easier to practice and my grandchildren have been the best subjects of my efforts. But then, I stumbled on this guy named David Molnar. He did a free webinar on photography and had a site you could join to take courses to learn to use your camera. I joined it and have learned so much. I have loved this camera journey so much. It has helped me to master my camera so much better and to grow in confidence as a photographer. The enthusiasts I've met through the community have been such a blessing. I've spent hours admiring fellow students' work and learning from the experts. When David announced he had written a book I couldn't wait to get my hands on it. I was so happy to get to read it early and in my opinion- he has written a masterpiece! He has blended his fun, loving personality with personal testimony and professional technique in such a unique way. I found the book hard to put down. It not only inspired me to keep working on my skill, but it also gave me tools to do just that. In this book David shares his personal journey as a photographer and the struggles he had to go through to achieve the goal of "professional." He tells about how his original life plans got tragically aEncore
I always looked at people's photos and thought "I wish my photos would look like that". I kept trying and thinking that it wasn't the camera's (auto mode) fault but my mistakes. Turns out that I just didn't have the information I needed to produce what I wanted. I looked at other books on photography but they all seemed too technical and a bit boring. I was lucky to receive an advance copy of Learning to See, with its incredible stories, instructions, and advice has started me on a journey long overdue. Throughout this book, it covers everything from using manual mode on the camera, editing, and advice for moving into the professional fields. He breaks things down in ways that make sense and are easy to remember. But the thing that resonated most with me was David's first big advice. It was that little piece that made me not want to put the book down and will make it my go-to photography book (and I hope yours also). Since I first read this book, I am improving and more confident every time I pick up my camera.MelissaB
15. The Essence Of Photography: Seeing And Creativity [Book]

Product Details:
There is a lot more to photography than simply picking up a camera, pointing it toward something, and tripping the shutter. achieving a great photograph requires thought and preparation, an understanding of the photographic process, and a firm grasp of how light and composition affect a photo. there must be personal involvement and personal expression. there must be experimentation, with the recognition that only a small percentage of experiments end successfully. – in this book, best-selling author and world-renowned photographer and teacher bruce barnbaum explores these seldom-discussed issues by drawing upon his personal experiences and observations from more than 40 years of photographing and teaching. in addition to photographs, bruce also uses painting, music, and writing, as well as the sciences and even business, to provide pertinent examples of creative thinking. these examples serve as stepping-stones that will lead you to your own heightened ability to see and be creative. – creativity is a topic that is almost wholly ignored in formal education because most instructors think that it cannot be taught or learned. to the contrary, bruce has proven that photographic seeing and creativity can be taught, learned, and improved. this book expands on the ideas that are central to bruce's method of teaching photography, which he has used in workshops for the past 41 years. – included in the book are in-depth discussions on the following topics: defining your own unique rhythm and approach as a photographer – how to translate the scene in front of you to the final photograph – the differences and similarities between how an amateur and a professional approach photography – the differences between realism and abstraction, and the possibilities and limitations of each – learning to expand your own seeing and creativity through classes, workshops, and associating with other photographers – why the rules of composition should be ignored – how to follow your passion – when to listen to the critics and when to ignore them the book is richly illustrated with over 90 photographs taken by bruce as well as other photographers. – seeing and creativity are difficult to teach, but not impossible. this very different, perhaps groundbreaking book is sure to inspire photographers of all skill levels-from beginners to seasoned professionals-to think deeply about the issues involved in creating successful photographs.
Reviews:
This is not a book all about technical settings and equipment. It is about the preparation and the seeing of an image before you pick up your camera. It is about the Creativity involved and needed to make great images. I found it a great book. It has encouraged me to look at my image making in "A different Light"! For photographers looking to improve the creative side of their work this is a book well worth investing your time to studying and reading then putting it to practice.climb-high-0
This should be prescribed text for those serious about advancing their endeavours and expression in the photographic medium. Many of the concepts and approaches are distilled to clear approaches when considering taking photographs. Many photographers, and students of the art can pursue studies, courses, workshops, and take thousands of images trying to find their style, and grapple with the elements of the art , and often create results through much trial and error before realising and getting control of elementary components of the art – composition – expression, exposure – sharpness. The intuitive approach adopted by many new and experienced photographers is addressed in the the text. The "light blub" moment arrives when these instinctive appoaches are described in the book. Learning to trust and develop judgment and technical skill, will lead to be images. The book opens the door to this approach and offers a "shortcut" to what could become years of practice and shooting for many before they become familiar and understand the factors affecting image control. Highly recommend readingStan T

Reviews:
I was expecting a mixture of TECHNICAL, and descriptive information: what I got was a lot of VERY VERBOSE feel-good writing ! less than 10% of the text is anywhere near "technical"! After I learn how to use my FIRST DIGITAL SLR, I'd be glad to be more descriptive! Right NOW, I'm still trying to LEARN – something that this book should have used MOST of its dead trees to accomplish ! Digital Cameras are VERY TECHNICAL devices, and I WAS (at one time) quite good with a totally manual 35mm ( Pentax K-1000 ) : I'd recommend a newbie to try to find the MANUAL portion ( JUST SEVERAL PAGES !) and try to decipher the rest after becoming a little familiar ! Anyone beyond ME would have NO USE for this …. text! Anyone LIKE ME will never understand WHY he started with the MOST COMPLICATED stuff FIRST ! As best that I can tell, this is just a SEE-HOW-GOOD-I-AM type of book !melvin2344
