My baby sister purchased these for us to get a better understanding of the Bible and it was exactly what we needed. It's like we found answers to so many questions we had and even answered questions to things we didn't know we should've known. A beautiful book and thoughtfully done. Not really a daily devotional for its more dense than that. I will stretch this out much longer for it covers a lot of material to ponder. Not too much fill ins or scripture jumping to bog down your process . 7 topics to cover and ponder- choose your own pace not number of days. Lay out is interesting and great for review.Adrian S.

Bible teacher and author Jen Wilkin teaches women of all ages to dig into God's Word for themselves in her new book Women of the Word: How to Study the Bible with Both Our Hearts and Our Minds published by Crossway Books. The book promises to be a great resource for women Bible teachers youth workers parents and anyone else longing to study the Bible for themselves. In the book Wilkin gives her own testimony of learning to study God's Word for herself and she shares the value of Bible literacy. She humorously illustrates some incomplete approaches to Bible reading including the Xanax Approach the Pinball Approach the Magic Ball Approach the Personal Shopper Approach the Telephone Game Approach and the Jack Sprat Approach. In the process Wilkin shows that not only should readers dig into God's Word themselves but they should use a well-rounded approach. Additionally Women of the Word challenges readers to approach Bible study differently than they may have in the past. We often read the Bible and make it about us by asking 'What does God have for me today?' Instead Wilkin encourages readers to see God as the central character of the Bible and to ask 'What do I learn about God and His character?' She says 'The Bible tells us who we are and what we should do but it does so through the lens of who God is.' The rest of Women of the Word deals with the 5 P's of Sound Bible Study. Wilkin says Bible students should study God's Word with Purpose Perspective Patience Process and Prayer and that those five aspects are all interwoven and not necessarily linear. The over-arching Purpose is to know the Big Story of the Bible and see how all the parts fit together. Reading with Perspective means becoming an archaeologist and answering five basic archaeological questions. Serious study takes Patience it follows a Process and it starts continues and ends in Prayer. After introducing the 5 P's of Sound Bible Study Wilkin then illustrates the process with the book of James. Women of the Word also includes some helpful extras including a chapter just for Bible teachers and an appendix of recommended resources. Overall Wilkin offers a sound Bible study process for women of all ages. It's simple though certainly not easy and it promises to reward the student with treasures from God's Word. Though marketed to women (as the title indicates) Women of the Word would help anyone learn to study God's Word for themselves. It would be great for a variety of study situationsómothers and daughters mothers and homeschoolers mentor relationships and small groups. I highly recommend the Women of the Word and will be using it as I disciple other women in the Word. The only thing I regret is that the book doesn't include a one-page summary of the 5 P's of Sound Bible Study so that as I study a book of the Bible or lead a group Bible study I can refer to it instead of flipping back and forth in Women of the Word. A one page reminder of how to approach a Bible book study would be helpful and perhaps it's something that can be offered later on the publisher's website or the author's own website. Still it's a minor detail and it won't keep me from using or recommending Women of the Word. This is an amazing resource that will hopefully spark a revival of biblical literacy. This book provides a basic and practical method of reading and studying Scriptures, in order to gain deeper understanding of Him, Whom it is about. It is a great book not only for women but for all people, who desire to study the Bible properly, especially if you have not been taught how to read and study the Bible on your own. Very helpful Bible Study of 52 women mentioned in the Bble; the individual lessons are easy to do in small groups or even individually. I like the questions that makes you think and also apply in your own life.dira7035

Although the author herself seems charming the study was not. I was part of a large group doing this study and the conclusion was that although it covered the whole Bible it was in a nutshell and this lead to more confusion. Her personal commentary was trite and crass. Many major stories come down to one verse out context that didn't make sense at all. As a women's leader for 32 years I find it hard to believe people like this study if you know the Bible you would be offended by her comments, if you don't know it your are being misguided. I absolutely hated the way she talked about Paul. She painted a portrait of him as an ego centered Apostle exulting himself. And she ask you to keep a straight face as you read his words in Romans 1:11 ! She obviously didn't study the context or history of the letters, or do good solid exegesis. She instead used her personal ides and opinions to paint a poor negative portrait of Paul. Tying to make Paul more like herself then the man he was. Her hero is Beth Moore and many of her studies are like this too. This a poorly written study, not much meat and very lacking in true scholarship. Beware of what you put into your heart.Princess

I have led this study many times now–with believers, with seekers, with a group of neighbors from many denominations, with kids (adapted)–and it is a wonderful introduction to the whole story of Scripture. For those who have been reading the Bible and know the stories of the Bible, it offers "a-ha" moments. For those will vague knowledge of the Biblical stories, it places context and understanding. Lightbulbs turn on! I highly recommend this study as a launching point to Biblical understanding.Julie

I've been a Christian for over 60 years so I thought a study on Bible basics might not have much new to offer. I was mistaken. Angie added a fresh perspective and numerous background facts while tracing Christ's presence in God's word from Genesis through Revelation. The video program gave insight into the author's heart, but the study can stand on its own. A great choice for women as a group or individually, as mature Christians or recent converts.Magrah

This is an incredible book. It allows you to really understand the time of the kings in the old testament and how far away people can get from God. The reality is, He us faithful.These Wonderful teachers in this book use every day common analogies to help you understand how much God is faithful. I find myself looking at life and the world using everyday analogies regarding my faith and walk and how God shows up even when we are not truly present. I purchased this book about a month ago. I could not wait to get started. I have been a Christian for many years and always pick chapter hear and there to read out of the bible. This book gave me the diction I needed to go, with reason why to read which books 1st. even though I thought it was stupid for me to read 1 John 7 times I did it anyway and what a blessing. I think it does not matter if your situation is that you are a new Christian or an old that needs diction read this great book either way. I went and bought another one for my secret sister. There are many bible study methods but I have not seen one as in-depth as the inductive study method presented in How to Study Your Bible and workbook by Kay Arthur David Arthur and Pete De Lacy. The basis of this method are three components: observation-discover what it says interpretation-discover what it means and application-discover how it works. The authors walk you through how to use these three components in your study. Each one has certain questions that will help you to understand and dig deeper into your scriptures. The method itself looks a little confusing at first since there are so many symbols and markings that they are teaching you to use on your scriptures but once you learn them you can break down your daily verses and understand so much more. They teach you how to find who the author of the book is who they are writing to what God is trying to show us through His wonderful word and so much more. I have never studied the bible this way and have never had more understanding of what I was reading either. I was a little worried about practicing this method on a bible that I have since I know that in the beginning I would make some mistakes with my markings. This is where the FANTASTIC workbook comes in. I got to try out this method without ruining a bible I have plus all the answers are at the back of the book. (I felt like I was back in high school and cheating a little.) If you buy the book (which I HIGHLY recommend) you need to buy the workbook. It will make things so much easier and save you from going through a few bibles in the process. I can't wait to fully embrace this method. I would recommend this set of books to anyone that is really wanting to find some meaning in God's word and to grow their relationship with their heavenly Father. I have nearly finished reading The Bible in a Year and at times have been confused about time scales. I really wish I had had this little book months ago. It gives a brief synopsis of every book and when they were probably written. It’s a little gem and well worth purchasing.Ann

This is the second one I purchased. The first one was for me. This one was to be sent to my friend for her birthday. When it arrived, I opened the package to be sure that it was the book that I had a copy of. It was, however, when I opened the book, it was very difficult to read. The pages seemed like they were a cheap xerox copy of the original. The pages are bleached white, whereas my original book has pages that have a soothing slightly yellow tint to them. The new book's print is so faded and faint that I had to get my reading glasses to be able to see the words comfortably. I sent the book to her, anyway. I hope she is not as picky as I am with the ease of readability that a book should have. I did not tell her that my copy has much darker print that is much easier on the eyes. Overall, I am not impressed with the quality of this print.jhhome
