1. On Black Men [Book]
Product Details:
Mutilated, dying, or dead, black men play a role in the psychic life of culture. from national dreams to media fantasies, there is a persistent imagining of what black men must be. this book explores the legacy of that role, particularly its violent effect on how black men have learned to see themselves and one another. david marriott draws upon popular culture, ranging from lynching photographs to current hollywood film, as well as the ideas of key thinkers, including frantz fanon, richard wright, james baldwin, and john edgar wideman, to reveal a vicious pantomime of unvarying reification and compulsive fascination, of whites looking at themselves through images of black desolation, and of blacks dispossessed by that process.

5. How To Be Black [Book]

Product Details:
If you don't buy this book, you're a racist. have you ever been called "too black" or "not black enough"? have you ever befriended or worked with a black person? if you answered yes to any of these questions, this book is for you. raised by a pro-black, pan-afrikan single mother during the crack years of 1980s washington, dc, and educated at sidwell friends school and harvard university, baratunde thurston has over thirty years' experience being black. now, through stories of his politically inspired nigerian name, the heroics of his hippie mother, the murder of his drug-abusing father, and other revelatory black details, he shares with readers of all colors his wisdom and expertise in how to be black. beyond memoir, this guidebook offers practical advice on everything from "how to be the black friend" to "how to be the (next) black president" to "how to celebrate black history month." to provide additional perspective, baratunde assembled an award-winning black panel—three black women, three black men, and one white man (christian lander of stuff white people like)—and asked them such revealing questions as: "when did you first realize you were black?" "how black are you?" "can you swim?" the result is a humorous, intelligent, and audacious guide that challenges and satirizes the so-called experts, purists, and racists who purport to speak for all black people. with honest storytelling and biting wit, baratunde plots a path not just to blackness, but one open to anyone interested in simply "how to be."

9. Black Boy [Book]

Product Details:
A special 75th anniversary edition of black boy, richard wright's powerful and eloquent memoir of his journey from innocence to experience in the jim crow south. at once an unashamed confession and a profound indictment, black boy is a poignant and disturbing record of social injustice and human suffering. when black boy exploded onto the literary scene in 1945, it caused a sensation. orville prescott of the new york times wrote that "if enough such books are written, if enough millions of people read them maybe, someday, in the fullness of time, there will be a greater understanding and a more true democracy." opposing forces felt compelled to comment: addressing congress, senator theodore bilbo of mississippi argued that the purpose of this book "was to plant seeds of hate and devilment in the minds of every american." from 1975 to 1978, black boy was banned in schools throughout the united states for "obscenity" and "instigating hatred between the races." the once controversial, now classic american autobiography measures the brutality and rawness of the jim crow south against the sheer desperate will it took to survive. richard wright grew up in the woods of mississippi, with poverty, hunger, fear, and hatred. he lied, stole, and raged at those about him; at six he was a "drunkard," hanging about in taverns. surly, brutal, cold, suspicious, and self-pitying, he was surrounded on one side by whites who were either indifferent to him, pitying, or cruel, and on the other by blacks who resented anyone trying to rise above the common lot. the second half of the book focuses on wright's move north to chicago, and his experiences with the communist party (a section that was pulled from the book's original publication). black boy is richard wright's compelling account of his journey. deeply affecting and beautifully written, it is as timely today as when it was first published seventy-five years ago.
Reviews:
I opened the package and read the first chapter before I trashed the wrappings. I had read a portion in my college Lit. class and was struck by the way he puts words together and just had to read the book. I think Native Son might be next.sunlark43
Landmark writer in Richard Wright. Would suggest it to my friendsPENNY
Black Boy is an autobiography by Richard Wright. Depicting Wright's life in great detail, the book tells the story of his troubled youth and race relations in the South. Richard Wright depicted himself as an outcast growing up in Mississippi with family members who embraced religion. Being misunderstood and dismissed was common for him in the household. A few of the most disturbing aspects of his early childhood included him accidentally burning down his home, and hanging a stray kitten that his father carelessly instructed him to killthis was not to be taken literally, however; Richard's father just wanted the kitten to be quiet so that he could go back to sleep. Richard's hatred for his father led him to take a more literal interpretation of the command in order to defy him. His plan backfired when his mother and brother instilled in him guilt; his mother instructed him to take down the stiff kitten and give it a proper burial. Young Richard's father ended up leaving the family for another woman, further aggravating Richard's hatred for him. Even when Richard's mother was struggling and battling sickness to support him and his brother, he refused to live with his father and new wife, who offered a more comfortable living situation, on principle. He described his father as a simple man who had allowed himself to be mentally enslaved; pity was another potent emotion that Richard expressed regarding his father.max_coin

This book really taught me a whole lot that I did not know about the criminal justice system and the penal system. WoW!!! My outlook has totally been changed by this book and I recommend it to everyone who is interested in the subjects of criminology and penology and race relations/history. A must read!Mikel
Oh, no, blames the White race for everything a black man experiences. When the real issue is constantly overlooked. USE PROTECTION WHEN MAKING BABIES. The black men in prison, for the most part are from single parent homes. Sex, sex and more sex, no protection and knowing the baby will bring another government welfare check. Fathers simply could care less and walk. NO RESPONSIBILITY. Therefore young black men turn to street crime, drug selling, and the cycle continues. Sex, sex and more sex, more babies born into single parent environment, lacking education, no support and to the street they go. STOP MAKING EXCUSES BEYOND THIS TRUTH.sportlady88
This is an amazing book, I really enjoyed the read. Very well written and packed with quality information regarding the black man's prison experience, statistics and much more.Chizzy

12. We Real Cool: Black Men And Masculinity [Book]
Product Details:
"when women get together and talk about men, the news is almost always bad news," writes bell hooks. "if the topic gets specific and the focus is on black men, the news is even worse." in this powerful new book, bell hooks arrests our attention from the first page. her title–wereal cool; her subject–the way in which both white society and weak black leaders are failing black men and youth. her subject is taboo: "this is a culture that does not love black males: " "they are not loved by white men, white women, black women, girls or boys. and especially, black men do not love themselves. how could they? how could they be expected to love, surrounded by so much envy, desire, and hate?"
13. Black Men’s Health: A Strengths-Based Approach Through A Social Justice Lens For Helping Professions [Book]

Product Details:
Now more than ever there is a need to focus on black men's health in higher education and ensure that future practitioners are trained to ethically and culturally serve this historically oppressed community. this textbook provides practical insight and knowledge that prepare students to work with black men and their families from a strengths-based and social justice lens. there is a dearth in the literature that discusses the prioritization of black men’s health within the context of how they are viewed by societal approaches to engage them in research, and health programming aimed at increasing their participation in health services to decrease their morbidity and mortality rates. much of the extant literature is over 10 years old and doesn't account for social determinants of health, perceptions of health status, as well as social justice implications that can affect the health outcomes of this historically oppressed population including structural and systemic racism as well as police brutality and gun violence.the book's 13 chapters represent a diversity of thought and perspectives of experts reflective of various disciplines and are organized in four sections:part i – racial disparities and black menpart ii – black masculinity part iii – black men in research part iv – social justice implications for black men's health black men’s health serves as a core text across multiple disciplines and can be utilized in undergraduate- and graduate-level curriculums. it equips students and educators in social work, nursing, public health, and other helping professions with the knowledge and insight that can be helpful in their future experiences of working with black men or men from other marginalized racial/ethnic groups and their families/social support systems. scholars, practitioners, and academics in these disciplines, as well as community-based organizations who provide services to black men and their families, state agencies, and evaluation firms with shared interests also would find this a useful resource.
14. The Man-Not: Race, Class, Genre, And The Dilemmas Of Black Manhood [Book]
Product Details:
The before columbus foundation 2018 winner of the american book award tommy j. curry’s provocative book the man-not is a justification for black male studies. the man-not, therefore,is a corrective of sorts, offering a concept of black males that could challenge the existing accounts of black men and boys desiring the power of white men who oppress them that has been proliferated throughout academic research across disciplines. curry argues that black men struggle with death and suicide, as well as abuse and rape, and their genred existence deserves study and theorization. this book offers intellectual, historical, sociological, and psychological evidence that the analysis of patriarchy offered by mainstream feminism (including black feminism) does not yet fully understand the role that homoeroticism, sexual violence, and vulnerability play in the deaths and lives of black males.

I was so pleased this book was available for purchase. I feel that I got the best product for my money and was glad I had that option via Half.com. It would have taken local bookstores a week or more to receive the product and I needed it soon for my son. He had about 8 books we needed for the whole school year.boonytoon3itt
