Reviews:
Girl, Woman, Other is the winner of the Booker Prize 2019 and deservedly so. Bernardine Evaristo has written a powerful story featuring 12 mostly black female characters of different ages from a teenager to a great grandmother from different backgrounds living in the UK. The novel captures a portrayal of modern Britain, presenting 12 original tales of women and their struggles of living in a predominantly white society. Each tale is unique, yet they are all linked. There's a lot packed in this book, with race and gender discriminaton being the most dominant themes of the book. Evaristo adopted an experimental writing style with no full stops or capital letters at the end and start of the sentences. Neither there are quotation marks for dialogues. While the lack of punctuation threw me off balance at first and got me worried this was going to be another Milkman, luckily, that was not the case. After just a couple of chapters I got used to the style and it didn't bother me at all after that. This book is unique and original, unlike anything I've ever read. It is a fascinating, timely and eye-opening read. I'm already thinking that I probably want to re-read the book next year which says a lot as I hardly ever do re-reads.Jim The Runner
If I could miss first 3 chapters, without it meaning the reader would be unable to locate later characters it would be super for me. First half too much change of thought for me. it was still challenging and I appreciate updating the products of my ancient thinking. My critique must be around 40 years out of date, re sex but I am leading the field on colour issues and felt deeply for those dealt with here. Just coming to terms with ageism my self, but at 86 beyond caring too much about that. In this day and age it seems one can still think and feel BUT just do not spout about it, in case someone takes offence at friendly banter. What a challenge this book is. So much so I will read it all again.sheilashmor0

"i am keenly aware that everyone and everything has a story," april d. ryan acknowledges. in black women will save the world, she melds these two truths, creating an inspiring and heart-tugging portrait of one of the momentous years in america, 2020–when america elected its first black woman vice president–and celebrates the tenacity, power, and impact of black women across america. from the beginning of the nation to today, black women have transformed their pain into progress and have been at the frontlines of the nation's political, social, and economic struggles. these "sheroes" as ryan calls them, include current political leaders such as maxine waters, valerie jarrett, and kamala harris; latosha brown, and other activists. ryan also chronicles her personal journey from working-class baltimore to the elite echelons of journalism and speaks out about the hurdles she faced in becoming one of the most well-connected members of the washington press corps–while raising two daughters as a single mother in the aftermath of a messy divorce. it is time for everyone to acknowledge black women's unrivaled contributions to america. yet our democracy remains in peril, and their work is far from done. black women will save the world presents a vital kaleidoscopic look at women of different ages and from diverse backgrounds who devote their lives to making the world a better place–even if that means stepping out of their "place."

8. The Enneagram For Black Liberation: Return To Who You Are Beneath The Armor You Carry [Book]
Product Details:
Am i worthy of belonging? am i loved just as i am? am i safe to exist without worry? how do black women return to our truest selves in systems that answer no to these three questions? the enneagram is an ancient system of human development that shows us the limiting stories that keep us stuck in unhelpful patterns, and invites us into more expansive stories. for too long, conversations about the enneagram and its personality types have been centered on and by whiteness. breaking down each enneagram type as a form of armor, this book offers practices to help black women, and all who live on the margins, begin to build a sense of self separate from our mechanisms of self-protection, while working to dismantle the systems that require us to stay constantly armored up. chichi agorom takes readers through each of the nine enneagram types, along with stories of black women who identify with them, to illustrate the stories people must tell themselves in order to feel safe. in the process, agorom seeks to inspire us to expand beyond our type patterns. wholeness work is justice work. centering freedom, ease, and rest for black women, agorom invites each of us to claim the enneagram as our tool for resilience-building in the continued fight for liberation.
Reviews:
I have appreciated the enneagram as a way to better understand and offer compassion to myself and those around me for several years. However, this book is exactly what the conversation surrounding the enneagram has been missing. Chichi talks about our enneagram types as armor- one that we are often encouraged to put down as a sign of growth and self-reflection. While this is lovely in theory, as pointed out in the book it also centers privileged individuals. And as Chichi writes, "It is harmful to make unarmored vulnerability the end goal without addressing the systemic inequities that make armoring necessary for groups of people.” This book speaks truth to power, embraces nuance, and shines a light on the enneagram as a tool for Black liberation. I will be reflecting on what I have learned from this book for a long time. Buy it. And then buy it for all your friends. You won’t regret it.Kailin
This book is incredible. As a couple and family therapist and a seeker of knowledge myself I am always on the lookout for books that I connect with and that my clients may as well. I have read many books on the Enneagram, I often utilize the enneagram types in therapy and for myself as well. This is the first enneagram book where I felt fully seen, heard, known and supported. As a 2, myself, I can feel extreme shame while reading "my section" and I did not feel that way while reading this book!!!! I actually took so many notes in the book and want to know more, want to understand myself even more as my shame isn't taking over as I read Chichi's words. I felt understood and reflected back from the pages. In my opinion, which is just my opinion, I imagine anyone who has felt as an outsider, has felt oppressed, has felt lesser can benefit from the wisdom in this book. I do believe that everyone and anyone can and will benefit from reading this book. Please buy two, read one for yourself and gift another one.Cate

Reviews:
Kaia Alderson writes a remarkable debut novel based on the 1st all Black Female 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalien that was deployed over sees during WWII. This author takes the reader on Grace and Eliza's journey from application, to interview, to serving oversees in the Women's Army Auxiliary Corps. This book keeps you engaged and entertained the entire book because it draws you in wanting to know more about their experiences and fate. What a wonderful story of bravery, friendships, family hardships, adversity, love, and loss. Be sure to add this incredible book to your TBR list! A great book club pick!Akbaird
I loved this book. Eliza and Grace endured much and still kept their friendship. I never realized that black women had their own battalion and how upsetting to have to segregate even in the military. The fact that both of these women had special talents (Grace-piano), (Eliza-writing) they still were not given the respect they deserved. They did persevere and they were like sisters. It was heartbreaking what happened to the 3 women from the battalion after the war in France and that part of the story was true. The author did right by those women. This book was insightful, fun, heartbreaking and powerful. This is a must read for historical fiction fans. 16. At The Dark End Of The Street: Black Women, Rape, And Resistance–A New History Of The Civil Rights Movement From Rosa Parks To The Rise Of Black Power [Book]
Product Details:
Rosa parks was often described as a sweet and reticent elderly woman whose tired feet caused her to defy segregation on montgomery's city buses, and whose supposedly solitary, spontaneous act sparked the 1955 bus boycott that gave birth to the civil rights movement. the truth of who rosa parks was and what really lay beneath the 1955 boycott is far different from anything previously written. in this groundbreaking and important book, danielle mcguire writes about the rape in 1944 of a twenty-four-year-old mother and sharecropper, recy taylor, who strolled toward home after an evening of singing and praying at the rock hill holiness church in abbeville, alabama. seven white men, armed with knives and shotguns, ordered the young woman into their green chevrolet, raped her, and left her for dead. the president of the local naacp branch office sent his best investigator and organizer to abbeville. her name was rosa parks. in taking on this case, parks launched a movement that ultimately changed the world. – the author gives us the never-before-told history of how the civil rights movement began; how it was in part started in protest against the ritualistic rape of black women by white men who used economic intimidation, sexual violence, and terror to derail the freedom movement; and how those forces persisted unpunished throughout the jim crow era when white men assaulted black women to enforce rules of racial and economic hierarchy. black women's protests against sexual assault and interracial rape fueled civil rights campaigns throughout the south that began during world war ii and went through to the black power movement. the montgomery bus boycott was the baptism, not the birth, of that struggle. at the dark end of the street describes the decades of degradation black women on the montgomery city buses endured on their way to cook and clean for their white bosses. it reveals how rosa parks, by 1955 one of the most radical activists in alabama, had had enough. “there had to be a stopping place,” she said, “and this seemed to be the place for me to stop being pushed around.” parks refused to move from her seat on the bus, was arrested, and, with fierce activist jo ann robinson, organized a one-day bus boycott. – the protest, intended to last twenty-four hours, became a yearlong struggle for dignity and justice. it broke the back of the montgomery city bus lines and bankrupted the company. – a controversial, moving, and courageous book; narrative history at its best.

Fascinating read! Compelling and thoughtful with a twist.JazzyGirl
For her debut novel, The Other Black Girl, Zakiya Delila Harris uses her insider knowledge of the publishing world to introduce the reader to that unique environment. She also provides the perspective of a "token black woman" in an industry that struggles to reconcile entrenched racism with the goal of "purposeful diversification." The book opens with a prologue that will leave readers scratching their head in more ways than one. The main character here is Nella, an ambitious assistant editor at the highly esteemed Wagner Books. She hopes that all her efforts will put her in line for a promotion, but they are dashed by the entrance of another black women who is hired as her peer. Hazel is a confident, magnetic woman who quickly becomes Nella's opponent in office politics. Nella seems to be overly gracious in her tolerance of Hazel's manipulation and mercurial attitudes. As Hazel rises meteorically in the opinions of her bosses and coworkers, Nella becomes more bogged down with self-doubts about her own competence. She bolsters her efforts by working harder, hoping to be recognized. She no longer has time to devote to the important causes and activities she used to value, and she becomes increasingly paranoid and erratic. Nella suspects that Hazel is hiding something from her past that may be potentially dangerous, and she enlists her best friend to help ferret out the truth. This when The Other Black Girl takes a remarkably unexpected turn. No spoilers here, but readers will benefit if they go back and re-read that puzzling prologue again. Harris has drawn the reader down a clue-strewn path that are only becomes resolved by the last few chapters. Excellent writing and characterization make this novel a fantastic summer read for those looking for a different kind of suspense mystery by a talented new author. 20. Why I Love Black Women [Book]
Product Details:
Son and husband, soulmate and teacher, michael eric dyson owes his success to the love and support of the black women in his life. yet too often, he warns, african american women are the victims of negative stereotypes that dominate the larger culture and even many quarters of black america. it's time to stop viewing black women as scolding sapphires, welfare queens, professional prima donnas-and carping competitors with white women -and to start giving them the respect and the love they deserve.why i love black women is an act of cultural restoration that rescues black women from vicious rhetoric and irresponsible generalizations. it is a catalogue of virtues, an unapologetically cheerful view of black women that rescues their strengths and beauties from callous denial or cruel indifference. deeply personal and socially provocative, dyson singles out the defining virtues of african american women. more than a colored knock-off of "vanilla" virtues, these qualities evoke praise and conjure awe in the face of black women's struggles. in an era marred by bigoted and baleful beliefs about black women-from hip-hop to the pulpit, from the streets to scholarly focus-dyson offers a welcome reprieve from cultural madness. why i love black women explodes taboos while it celebrates the perseverance and the pride, the sensuality and the sophistication, of african american women everywhere.
