I was a best boy at a Dutch television series, when the gaffer I worked with recommended this book. It took me a while to find this particular version of the book, but it was absolutely worth it. This is a must have for every professional or student in the great world of film. As being a filmstudent myself, this is all the information I need to start playing around with filmlighting and try to become better and try to light different kind of scenery. Brown starts with the history about lighting, how our eyes work etcetera. There is a lot more info in this book about all sorts of lights, from tungsten to fluorescent, how different scenes were lit to give you an idea about what it takes, and how complete studios are lit. I like it especially that the book doesn't get too complicated. He keeps it simple but loads it with a lot of information but without getting too much at a time. The technical difficulties section is great, and all the other chapters make it a complete handbook for gaffers/riggers etc. From light sources, light temperature to video lighting, he describes it all. If you need a book that covers all the technical aspects of modern filmmaking, this is it. Covers both digital and film. Great reference for D.I.Y. filmmaker except it does not cover innovative ways to get things done on the cheap. But for that you'll have to be creative and what kind of filmmaker can't be creative. Gives you enough info that, with your owen creativity, you can figure the rest out. I understand that this is required reading in some film course and with good reason. This edition is pretty current, even though it is now 2010. Covers lights, camera, sound and all equipment needed to start your career. Good luck!ducatibuddha
