2. The Art And Science Of Low Carbohydrate Living: An Expert Guide To Making The Life-Saving Benefits Of Carbohydrate Restriction Sustainable And Enjoyable [Book]
Product Details:
Carbohydrate restricted diets are commonly practiced but seldom taught. as a result, doctors, dietitians, nutritionists, and nurses may have strong opinions about low carbohydrate dieting, but in many if not most cases, these views are not grounded in science. the authors of this book share over 50 years of clinical experience using low carbohydrate diets. particularly in the last decade, much has been learned about the risks associated with insulin resistance (including but not limited to metabolic syndrome, hypertension, and type-2 diabetes), and how this condition is far better controlled by carbohydrate restriction than with drugs.

This is a very good book. It tells you "why" the keto diet works. Backing it up with scientific proof.emme0635
A well reasoned case for the positive uses of grass fed foodstuffs.starwarrior99
I have so far only read Chapter 8 (Lipoprotein Effects) but I found it fascinating, and the authors are able to write with authority because of their extensive clinical experience of Low Carb diets and how the human body reacts to them. Some people describe Low Carb diets as "Fads" implying there is no scientific or logical basis for them, but Drs Volek and Phinney (who are amply qualified) have performed appropriate clinical research and can explain the relevant biological mechanisms. Among other things, Chapter 8 "Lipoprotein Effects" explains why saturated fat in the blood and body tissue (not at all healthy) comes from eating excess carbohydrate (and not dietary saturated fat). Also, how cardiovascular disease risk will decrease when someone starts a Low Carb High Fat diet, and why lipid biomarkers will improve. I wasn't sure initially whether buying this book was worthwhile, but having read some of it I am extremely pleased I have!pdmusk

Reviews:
As a college student, 12 Fixes to Healthy's acknowledgement of our imperfection when it comes to living a healthy lifestyle is encouraging. The author motivates readers to implement small changes that will have a large overall impact on our health. These 12 fixes are accessible by the average person and do not require an excess of money or time. I am especially excited to begin working on tangible steps offered in the book, intentionally working towards improved health, one fix at a time.Emma M
I'm a 54 year old male and with age I am becoming more and more intentional about issues regarding my health. There is an immense amount of material and data available but I admit it can become overwhelming. I was recently given a copy of Judith Draughon's book "12 Fixes to Healthy" and as the sub-title states it is a wellness plan for life. The layout is simple, exceptional, easy to navigate and a treasure trove of information fully relevant to where I am physically and what I long to achieve in my diet in regards to good health. The check lists at the end of several of the chapters are a quick guide and keep the simple things that I need to be doing right there at my fingertips. This book feels as if a healthy lifestyle is doable, enjoyable, and flexible and am looking forward to implementing one fix at a time. If you need just 1 volume for healthy living and a go to guide for your library, this book is it. WillWill
I received this book in hopes to gain a better understanding on healthy eating. Although, I have reached a new level and respect for the value of my life. 12 Fixes to Healthy gave me a different aspect of things that I thought were completely healthy or I thought I had great control over. This book was very descriptive and informative about how to take charge of your health, how to direct your eating habits, how to refrain from certain illness, and even losing weight without being on those ridiculous diets. The things that Judith have provided in this book for us are outstanding and I am very thankful for the opportunity of reading this book.Marva E.

Reviews:
The book itself is great – a fantastic resource for dietetics students. Comprehensive and one I will keep on the shelf for many anticipated future "I'll just look up…" moments. Be aware though when ordering that Booktopia will not tell you that the book is out of stock until AFTER you have purchased it. I waited almost three weeks for the book to arrive and while they did upgrade me to free express shipping after I contacted them about the wait, having the book arrive late for the start of semester is a serious inconvenience. If you need it in a hurry, buy it from a site that confirms they have the book in stock prior to ordering instead of Booktopia.Dietetics student

It provides current and comprehensive, science-based information about nutritional requirements and guidelines; common disease processes, clearly organised by body systems, and recommendations about the best nutritional and lifestyle treatment guidelines to apply for the nutritional management of these diseases.Rose

Reviews:
book arrived very quickly and was in wonderful condition- exactly as advertised. I paid $16 dollars for it. The same text is for sale at my health food store for $46 dollars. Great value and excellent buy.skidroad55
I'm studying holistic nutrition, and this is one of the required textbooks, however, I believe this would be a great guide for anyone who wants to pursue a healthier way of eating. There is information on everything related to food and how it is grown and processed and what it does for us. This is a very thick book and is well written. The information is pretty easy to understand. It is amazing to see what is added to some of the food we eat and well worth considering before you go on your next trip to the grocery store!lulupbelle
Quite honestly I don't think anyone could give a review on this book. It probably would take me a year to read it. It's quite big but so far so good on healthy topics.ceeca_uyj7dc6h

Food shopping can be so confusing and sometimes…downright misleading! don''t you agree? as a dietitian nutritionist, i love the approach of buying all of your food from food companies that purely have your particular needs in mind, but i also recognize that most of us face real-world constraints on our diets. sure, it would be great to go to the farmers'' market to pick up a freshly baked loaf of whole-grain bread, but realistically speaking, it''s more likely that i''ll swing by the grocery store for a loaf of a packaged pre-sliced type of bread. once i''m there, i''ll confront a shelf full of breads with packages that make all kinds of claims about how healthy they are, but how do you know which one will be best for you and your family? this book is meant to help you determine the best foods to buy by enlisting the aid of a powerful weapon that can help you succeed in meeting your personal needs while cutting through the confusion- and that''s the food label. the label has been there for years, right in front of you, but you may have ignored it. i understand. and believe me, you''re not alone. labels can be misleading, full of terms you don''t know. you might think that since labels are carefully regulated there would be no room for misinterpretation about what goes on the package . . . right? wrong. labels are not just about government regulations and definitions, they are about educating and enticing consumers. but there are certain circumstances where the facts get twisted and additional interpretation is necessary. i try to guide people by helping them to think of food in a different light: each bite they eat will have a purpose and appear somewhere in their bodies. by coordinating your meals and planning ahead, you can balance out your day and assure that you''re not going to overdo anything or be missing out on key nutrients your body needs. i can''t even count the number of times a patient said to me, "i wish i could take you food shopping with me." they want me to help them translate what''s on the label and cut through the confusion so they can make a quick, healthy decision about the best foods to buy. since i can''t actually go to the store with you, i will walk with you up and down the aisles of your supermarket and help explain confusing statements and deceptive labels on some of the products you''ve been purchasing for years. moreover, i''ll enable you to become skilled at separating fact from fiction by uncovering some of the most popular food myths that are highlighted by media hype, geared toward selling sound bites instead of sound advice. i''m not going to tell you what to do just because i said so – i''m going to give you the tools to help you decide which foods are best based upon a combo of science and common sense. after reading this book, you may not read the label on every product you purchase, but i''ll bet you will flip over more packages than you did before to look at all sides of the box, not just the flashy front of the package, knowing that if you decide to spend your hard-earned money on a food, there''s got to be a good reason why you chose that particular item. i hope that read it before you eat it will help you navigate the aisles efficiently, safely, and healthfully. i''d love for you to fill your cart with food you''ll feel proud to take from their labels to your table!

The nutritional information is rather dense and detailed, but good if that is what you are after.Rowena
Exactly what I was looking for!!! Vegan nutrition to the core! Everywhere else you only get general ideas, so you pick something from here and something from there and you create the bigger picture in your mind. But with this book you learn everything in one place, everything you need to know in vegan nutrition, history and much more! Loooove it!! Wish I had this book years ago!!!! Soo worth it!!!jorydany2015

Reviews:
After years of working out and "eating right" I was stagnant. I changed my workout every 3 months, I ate more, I ate less, I tracked everything I put in my mouth. I really got nothing from all of this. I read another review on a forum about this plan and figured, 30 days, I can do that. Heck, I had spent the last 2 years changing everything I could think of to no avail, so why not. WOW!! 30 days, real results! This book and the plan that follows has changed my life. I look at food differently now. I use what I learned and continue to apply it to my diet. I love the way I feel now, I sleep better, look better and have more energy. This is not some fly by night weight loss gimmick, it is for real.rikracer
This book is a game changer!! My whole family read it two years ago! We All eat Soo much better, most important is we Feel Soo much better!! We look at what we eat with a totally different perspective! I didnt realize the impact on what you eat does to your body until I read this book. I didnt even have to read it cover to cover. Its rather sad to know what they put in food so it tastes good and therefore you keep buying it. We read labels now, its kindve time consuming initially but you get good at it quickly. Sooo worth your time!! Its your health!!crocusflower
My husband & I are on day 27 of the whole 30 diet program & we are glad we did it! This book was very helpful with ideas, recipes & information on health & diet. We plan to continue with most of the suggestions after our 30 days is completed. My husband & I are in our early 60's & I'm sure he's lost more weight than I, but we haven't weighed yet as recommended by the book. I think it is easier for older men to lose weight than older women, (actually men in general of all ages than women) but I do feel better, my clothes are no longer snug & my allergies & digestion are much improved. I wish there was more information about age & food & that this book had a more complete index on the food & recipes that are included in the book. It seems that most diets & food related books are geared toward younger people with more money. Some of the food recommendations go above our budget limits. However our book is filled with bookmarks & folded corners!marjean15
