Reviews:
Incredible book!!!! Replanted is must read for anyone thinking of or currently going through the foster/adoption journey. It is easy to read and honestly written with stories that really touch home. It shows the trials, tribulations and wins of the adoption/foster journey and proves there is light at the end of the tunnel. There is a great balance of both faith based and hands on ideas of how to support yourself and get the supports you need within your community. Many times I found myself nodding while reading thinking "these people really get it" I also highlighted many passages and paragraphs to share with others. This is also a great resource for churches and community partners if you are looking into or currently supporting people going through this process. As foster/adoptive parents we can often feel overwhelmed and misunderstood while going through this process, this book gives you the hand up you need to keep moving forward!Momof8
REPLANTED is a much-needed resource offering Christian support to foster and adoptive families, as well as educating others about the importance of providing support for these families. This book offers guidance for the various struggles families encounter while raising foster and adopted children. Replanted also stresses the importance that families seek out emotional, informational, and tangible support. The final section of the book details how others, including family, friends, and the church, can provide wraparound support to these families in unique circumstances that are often not well understood. This is a wonderful guide for anyone involved in orphan care ministries!enb1977
In Replanted, the authors look at the blessings and challenges associated with foster care and adoption and provide practical suggestions for supporting these families. It digs into the three types of support that foster/adoptive families need – emotional, informational and tangible. It gave ideas for how foster/adoptive families can find support, as well as a section directed toward churches looking to provide a ministry for these families. I felt that the ideas presented were realistic in terms of what families would actually need as they bring children into their homes. At the end of each chapter, they have a series of discussion questions, making this book great to go through with a small group or on your own. As a foster/adoptive mom, I felt very validated as I read this book. The real-life examples that the authors provided throughout the book were very similar to what I have experienced, so I was better able to apply the ideas to my own family. The appendix provides the names of books, conferences, trainings and websites that provide additional information and support. I cannot wait to dig into those! I also really appreciated that the authors included a chapter devoted to supporting birth families, a group that is often left out of the conversation. I would recommend this book to people interested in becoming foster/adoptive parents as it covers many of the challenges that are experienced, but that may not be anticipated. While I think it would be most helpful to those early in the process, I took a lot away from it and I have been in the foster/adoption journey for 8 years. I also believe that it would be great for church leadership who may be considering starting a ministry for foster/adoptive families. So many churches encourage foster care and/or adoption, but not as many actually provide the support needed. I received an advance reader copy of this book from the publisher.Kjfisch
2. To The End Of June: The Intimate Life Of American Foster Care [Book]

Product Details:
"who are the children of foster care? cris beam, a foster mother herself, spent five years immersed in the world of foster care, looking into these questions and tracing firsthand stories. the result is to the end of june, an unforgettable portrait that takes us deep inside the lives of foster children at the critical points in their search for a stable, loving family. the book mirrors the life cycle of a foster child and so begins with the removal of babies and kids from birth families. there's a teenage birth mother in texas who signs away her parental rights on a napkin only to later reconsider, crushing the hopes of her baby's adoptive parents. beam then paints an unprecedented portrait of the intricacies of growing up in the system, the back-and-forth with agencies, the shuffling between pre-adoptive homes and group homes, the emotionally charged tug of prospective adoptive parents and the fundamental pull of birth parents. and then what happens as these system-reared kids become adults? beam closely follows a group of teenagers in new york who are grappling with what aging out will mean for them and meets a woman who has parented eleven kids from the system, almost all over the age of eighteen, and all still in desperate need of a sense of home and belonging. focusing intensely on a few foster families who are deeply invested in the system's success, to the end of june is essential for humanizing and challenging a broken system, while at the same time it is a tribute to resiliency and offers hope for real change"–publisher's website.

Reviews:
I got this book as an audiobook and it took me less than a week to listen to, which is a new record for me. It can be hard as an Australian on the adoption journey to find universally practical advice that isn't religious. These parents are Christian but don't assume the reader/listener also are which I found respectful. This book is full of practical, engaging, encouraging and hopeful advice. I loved it. Highly recommended!Nemesia

Overall, I found this good and helpful. I think it would be a great book to pass around. You may want to read it and add a few notes about your specific situation or recommend that this be a jumping off point for conversation. The one big exception is that I personally find the language "give up for adoption" offensive. Think of the emotional impact to an 8-year-old to be told they were given up. That also diminishes the power of the choice the birthmother is making and implies the adoptive parents stole the child away or somehow pressured the birthmother, none of which is true. However, outside of that issue I found this book helpful.AdoptiveMom
I read this before giving it to my Mom and it has helped me start so many more meaningful conversations around adoption. I would say this is a must for adoptive parents to read and to pass on to their families.cleenteen1
8. I'm Glad My Mom Died (Hardcover) Simon & Schuster

Product Details:
Jennette mccurdy details how she overcame harrowing struggles as a child tv star—including anorexia and bulimia, addiction, severe obsessive-compulsive disorder and a traumatic relationship with her mother. a heartbreaking and hilarious memoir by icarly and sam & cat star jennette mccurdy about her struggles as a former child actor—including eating disorders, addiction, and a complicated relationship with her overbearing mother—and how she retook control of her life. jennette mccurdy was six years old when she had her first acting audition. her mother’s dream was for her only daughter to become a star, and jennette would do anything to make her mother happy. so she went along with what mom called “calorie restriction,” eating little and weighing herself five times a day. she endured extensive at-home makeovers while mom chided, “your eyelashes are invisible, okay? you think dakota fanning doesn’t tint hers?” she was even showered by mom until age sixteen while sharing her diaries, email, and all her income. in i’m glad my mom died, jennette recounts all this in unflinching detail—just as she chronicles what happens when the dream finally comes true. cast in a new nickelodeon series called icarly, she is thrust into fame. though mom is ecstatic, emailing fan club moderators and getting on a first-name basis with the paparazzi (“hi gale!”), jennette is riddled with anxiety, shame, and self-loathing, which manifest into eating disorders, addiction, and a series of unhealthy relationships. these issues only get worse when, soon after taking the lead in the icarly spinoff sam & cat alongside ariana grande, her mother dies of cancer. finally, after discovering therapy and quitting acting, jennette embarks on recovery and decides for the first time in her life what she really wants. told with refreshing candor and dark humor, i’m glad my mom died is an inspiring story of resilience, independence, and the joy of shampooing your own hair.
Reviews:
The story of the struggle for success in Hollywood, particularly that of a reluctant child and an obsessed stage mother is well-worn territory. So what made this worth reading? Ms. McCurdy spent several years as a Nickleodean star in the early 2000s, even dabbling in a recording career. What makes this so compelling is her ability and willingness to share painful and unique details of her life, as well as that of her families' struggles, and how she was manipulated by her Mother and other adults at the network. She draws you in with a competing conversational style, and doesn't hold back on anything. By the end of the book, the reader is left feeling both moved and pleased with her decisions and intelligence in deciding to move beyond the grief left behind by her experiences. I was drawn from page to page and finished it in one sitting. I'll probably reread it more slowly, to be able to contemplate her unsparing exposition of the path she took to reach this point in her life. I wish her well. Buy it!fisheye
How does one begin to describe a woman who was a writer from birth but forced into acting but a complicated and narcissistic mother? Make no mistake, Jennette is aa wordsmith with a gift for dialogue. As a counsellor, I often see these memoirs end at the rick bottom stage and then go in with a sweeping epilogue if health abd wealth. Jennette us having none of that. She's done the work and writes of how hard it was to recover from mother. I've not been so struck by a voice in many years. Thank heavens Mom's death made way for Jennette's true colours. How bright and alive they are.

Product Details:
If you are thinking about fostering or adoption, this is a good book to start with. it doesn't offer beautiful pictures of waiting infants or angelic toddlers. those, you can get from any agency. instead, in fifty-two short chapters on different topics related to adoption and foster care, this book invites you to consider and prepare for realistic possibilities your agency may not think to mention. this book is written from the point of view of a foster and adoptive parent who has found the experience to be fulfilling, rewarding, gratifying, and exhausting! each thought-provoking topic is illustrated with a poignant example from the author's life, and followed by worksheets on which the reader is challenged to provide his or her own perspectives in response. in the thirty years between 1977 and 2007, the author parented one birth son, two stepsons, three foster daughters, one foster son, and three adopted sons. most of these young people presented with some combination of characteristics that put them in a category known as "special needs" or "hard to place." these characteristics included being older than five at the time of placement (the youngest was six and the oldest eighteen), being in a racial minority (one daughter and one son), and being part of a sibling group (the two youngest brothers). their medical and psychiatric diagnoses include posttraumatic stress disorder, reactive attachment disorder, major depression, physical abuse, manic depression with psychotic episodes, hemophilia that resulted in aids from a blood transfusion, multiple personality disorder (now known as disassociative identity disorder), obsessive-compulsive disorder, intermittent explosive disorder, addiction, sexual abuse, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, borderline intellectual functioning, sociopathy, hypertension, failure to thrive, hearing impairment, rickets, and polycystic kidney disease. some of the stories are funny. some are tragic. all are true.
