Reviews:
I would ABSOLUTELY recommend this book to anybody who is either working on getting out of debt or just wanting to learn about money management. And most folks who know me well know that I don't dispense praise lightly when reviewing books. I expected it to be the '38 great new tips to help you save money!!' kind of book but it was FAR more. The usual 'tips' I find in money management literature tend to be things like 'quit eating out' 'cut your cable package' 'don't buy expensive clothes' etc. none of which we do in the first place. We cook most of our food from scratch bike to work eat out maybe a few times a year and don't even own a television mostly from personal preference. However we are currently working to get out of debt and I found the ideas in this book super helpful. It goes beyond just tips and it focuses on how to have a sound philosophy and lifestyle of money management. There are charts and plans included in the text that are easy to comprehend and implementable for nearly any situation. You just scale it down to your own needs. The book explains a lot about what is both good and bad about credit cards investing loans and much more. According to the author getting to the debt-free stage is not the finish line but the starting line. Her philosophy makes a LOT of sense. It helps the reader formulate a plan to not only get out of debt but STAY out of debt. Plus it's well-written and easy to read. A big thumbs up for this book! (I received this book from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.)Rachel B.
This book was instrumental in teaching me to live within muy means and get out of debt. Get the book, read it, and then do EXACTLY what she tells you to do. Don't think "oh, this doesn't apply to me" or "I can just change this one or two things". Do it EXACTLY. And you will WIN.tscateh
I've been on a continuous journey to find ways to improve my financial situation within the confines of the income I live on. This book is definitely meeting the challenge of giving me new and realistic ways to achieve some of my goals.shopgirl.678

Reviews:
there are so many self-help books out there that cram so much information in between the book covers that you either want to a. skim through it as its boring b. use it as a decor item in your living room c. need a full dictionary to understand what they are talking about.. which leds to back to b. Erins book talks about one of the most important aspects of your adulthood – finances. It doesn't matter whether you are a six figure salary earner or a "new to this financial world stuff" person, the information she gives you relates to you AND is easy to follow. She adds her own personal stories and those that have taken her courses, so you get a real taste of REAL life examples and overcoming barriers. Of course she also adds a ton of humour to her writing, which makes you actually enjoy sitting down to read it. The bonus… you learn exactly what you didn't get taught as a younger adult… and you can save yourself a lot of grief, money and relationships, by actually learning and taking the steps she has quite easily laid out for you. In my family we NEVER spoke of money, how to save it, how to invest it, how to keep it…. I had to learn from that old style way of fall down and get back up again theory. I believe every child should be taught about finances from an early age, and know exactly how they need to get to finances they are comfortable with and one day putting it away for an enjoyable retirement as well. You can't lose by picking up this amazing book.Sassy B
FIrst of all, the words DEBT and BUDGET are not sexy, and to be quite honest can be downright frightful. If you are reading this review, then chances are you are looking to improve your relationship with your money. You are in the right place! What I am loving about this book is that it is completely NON-JUDGEMENTAL of wherever you are starting with your money. However, don't be fooled – Erin Skye Kelly gives it to you straight. She helps you get clarity about your money so you can be certain about how to track it and have an easy-to-use system to make it work for you, so you can GET THE HELL OUT OF DEBT! Additionally, the tools she gives you are simple to understand and practical to use – no glazed eyes over here trying to figure out mathematical equations. These budgeting tools are tactical and actionable. My favorite part of all is Erin's voice throughout the book – her witty humor combined with feeling like your best is the one teaching you (like being totally honest about your outfit when no one else is). This is an absolute welcomed breath of fresh air in the world of budgeting and money management. Do yourself a favor and get this book!DanaB
PSA!!!! This book is not all about DEBT, this book teaches you how to change the way you look at money. Erin's writing is so down to earth and you feel like you are one of her girlfriends which is everything to me. She's funny and it's like she knows you are starting to tune the words out and all of a sudden you will read " A working budget is more likely to get laid" hahaha. This is Erin's humor throughout the whole book and after reading this book and hearing her speak in one of my communities – I signed up for her program. This book is life changing and you will ultimately be debt free and have financial freedom (whatever that means to you) as long as you do the work. She provides budget and net worth templates to download so let's just say this book is a wake up call to your finances. So, long story short – BUY THIS BOOK ASAP!!!! (9)SHOW UP: Show up for yourself in spite of how you feel. Show up to do your work, whether or not you want to, even if you don't fully understand it, and even if your friends think it's dumb. Show up for you because you are someone who keeps promises to yourself. And show up because you are committed to your results, not your excuses. – Chapter 2 – Ten Success Principles you'll need to commit to. (Page 12)Cynthia

If you have never read this type of book before, this will do great. This book deals with fixing bad credit mostly. I Thought there would be more on taxes but there is only a small section. There are many type-o's through out the book, but it still has some good info.stingerbee55
4. Debt: The First 5,000 Years, updated And Expanded [Book]

Product Details:
The groundbreaking international best-seller that turns everything you think about money, debt, and society on its head—from the “brilliant, deeply original political thinker” david graeber (rebecca solnit, author of men explain things to me) before there was money, there was debt. for more than 5,000 years, since the beginnings of the first agrarian empires, humans have used elaborate credit systems to buy and sell goods—that is, long before the invention of coins or cash. so says anthropologist david graeber in a stunning reversal of conventional wisdom. he shows that arguments about debt and debt forgiveness have been at the center of political debates from renaissance italy to imperial china, as well as sparking innumerable insurrections. he also brilliantly demonstrates that the language of the ancient works of law and religion (words like “guilt,” “sin,” and “redemption”) derive in large part from ancient debates about debt, and shape even our most basic ideas of right and wrong.
Reviews:
This book is not just about debt, it's about life and living for the last 5000 years.kjnietfeld
If the reader is able to read it, this book will challenge the very way a person thinks about both money and debt. With numerous references, the author presents disruptive ways of thinking about community, communism, Adam Smith and a host of other economic assumptions that an American reader probably thought they already knew something about. For example, he points out that Adam Smith's often cited barter societies having lead to money based cultures have no actual historical examples. As an anthropologist having studied people groups, both historical and current, and what they actually did and now do, he approaches the study of economics from a perspective that I find difficult to fully understand, yet simultaneously both refreshing and troubling.spt97
