2. The Last Graduate: A Novel [Book]

Product Details:
New york times bestseller – the specter of graduation looms large as naomi novik’s groundbreaking, new york times bestselling trilogy continues in the stunning sequel to a deadly education. “the climactic graduation-day battle will bring cheers, tears, and gasps as the second of the scholomance trilogy closes with a breathtaking cliff-hanger.”—booklist (starred review)hugo award finalist – locus award finalist – one of the best books of the year: polygon, thrillist, she reads in wisdom, shelter. that’s the official motto of the scholomance. i suppose you could even argue that it’s true—only the wisdom is hard to come by, so the shelter’s rather scant. our beloved school does its best to devour all its students—but now that i’ve reached my senior year and have actually won myself a handful of allies, it’s suddenly developed a very particular craving for me. and even if i somehow make it through the endless waves of maleficaria that it keeps throwing at me in between grueling homework assignments, i haven’t any idea how my allies and i are going to make it through the graduation hall alive. unless, of course, i finally accept my foretold destiny of dark sorcery and destruction. that would certainly let me sail straight out of here. the course of wisdom, surely. but i’m not giving in—not to the mals, not to fate, and especially not to the scholomance. i’m going to get myself and my friends out of this hideous place for good—even if it’s the last thing i do. with keen insight and mordant humor, novik reminds us that sometimes it is not enough to rewrite the rules—sometimes, you need to toss out the entire rulebook.the magic of the scholomance trilogy continues in the golden enclaves
Reviews:
This book used witty banter between the main characters to build rapport and cement friendships. This sequel wasn't missing any elements from the original, and still continued the captivating plot Naomi Novik created. This book divulged more of El and her growth throughout the series.Anonymous
The story picks up right at the end of the first book and runs headlong into the next year. I'm anxious to read book number 3 after finishing this one. Seeing El develop and find out who she really is was a real treat.Crystal
The second Scholomance book is everything you would want after the first one, except it's darker and more delicious. Oh, and the ending will leave you in pieces.Lioness

Reviews:
This book is a great gift for any college student or college bound student because it reminds you of all the things that are part of "the college experience." What makes it special is the WAY it reminds you and embedded in all the ideas are other really important tips for college, like how to approach professors. As a college prof, I highly recommend and I also give it to all HS grads as a gift.ProfG
This is a great book from a great website, collegelifemadeeasy.com. I really did have a great, full "college experience" a LONGGGG time ago and now, as a college professor, I recommend this book regularly. Gen Z grads don't realize just how MUCH there is to do at college to experience ALL of it and not just get stuck in a single path. This book is a list of "want to's" rather than "have to's" that's written in a fun and inspirational way.Prof G

I bought these to give to three teens in our Church who are graduating. These teens have faithfully served a the Altar since they were ten-years-old and now they are going off to college. I wanted to give them something that would remind them of their faith and of their years of service to the Lord. This seems to be a perfect choice. I personally have both the "Jesus Calling" and the "Jesus Always" Devotional Books and I am hoping the teens will use this book as a stepping stone to one of those.Carole M.

Reviews:
I LOVE the Graduate Survival Guide. There are two little issues I'd recommend considering. 1. UNRELATED TO THE BOOK. Mine took over two weeks to receive. I had to postpone our graduation drive through party and then do it without the books. Disappointed to say the least. Especially because I called for a week without responses until I had already delivered the books. Doesn't affect the book, or how much I love Ramsey resources, just disappointed. 2. Many of my high school graduates will not go to college but they need something in their hands. I believe the book could be more general about approaching adult hood and not getting in a tough financial predicament. Being a wise steward with your money. Love the book though. I buy it for our seniors every year. Just wish it also applied to kids not doing college. I got tons of students who will do better having not went to college. Thanks! 🙂Mark S.
Anthony ONeal’s book is an excellent source of material for young people to learn how to avoid money mistakes in college. IMO, this book will provide young people the right guidance and direction to handling money wisely, making wise decisions and take control of their life. College students are hungry to learn about how to avoid the 5 mistakes explained in this book. Applying the material in this book to their lives provides college students with the financial principles to build a solid foundation to win with money and to give them hope to succeed in life.David L.
It is easy to read, review and refer back to. As a parent, I read the book first to acquire all the fine details, so I can continue to discuss all the recommendations and procedures with my teenage sons for their future financial success. My oldest teenage son is now reading this book.Scott M.

11. Lessons In Chemistry: A Novel [Book]

Product Details:
#1 new york times bestseller – goodreads choice award winner – meet elizabeth zott: a “formidable, unapologetic and inspiring” (parade) scientist in 1960s california whose career takes a detour when she becomes the unlikely star of a beloved tv cooking show in this novel that is “irresistible, satisfying and full of fuel” (the new york times book review) and “witty, sometimes hilarious . . . the catch-22 of early feminism.” (stephen king, via twitter) a best book of the year: the new york times, washington post, npr, oprah daily, entertainment weekly, newsweek“the most delightful novel i read this year . . . fresh and surprising . . . i laughed out loud!” —philip galanes, the new york times "a unique heroine . . . you'll find yourself wishing she wasn’t fictional." —seattle times chemist elizabeth zott is not your average woman. in fact, elizabeth zott would be the first to point out that there is no such thing as an average woman. but it’s the early 1960s and her all-male team at hastings research institute takes a very unscientific view of equality. except for one: calvin evans; the lonely, brilliant, nobel–prize nominated grudge-holder who falls in love with—of all things—her mind. true chemistry results. but like science, life is unpredictable. which is why a few years later elizabeth zott finds herself not only a single mother, but the reluctant star of america’s most beloved cooking show supper at six. elizabeth’s unusual approach to cooking (“combine one tablespoon acetic acid with a pinch of sodium chloride”) proves revolutionary. but as her following grows, not everyone is happy. because as it turns out, elizabeth zott isn’t just teaching women to cook. she’s daring them to change the status quo. laugh-out-loud funny, shrewdly observant, and studded with a dazzling cast of supporting characters, lessons in chemistry is as original and vibrant as its protagonist.

Entertaining and fast reading. Characters have some depth. Better than a soap opera but not classic.Evy
This book is well written and humorous, even if it deals with a range of serious subject matter such sex discrimination and orphanages run by the Catholic church. If this sounds like a contradiction, you will have to read the book to find out how well it works.Derrith
Thanks to NetGalley & Doubleday Books for a digital advance reader's copy. All comments and opinions are my own. This novel, a debut no less, was all over the place for me. Funny, satirical, sad, ironic, entertaining, witty, with elements of fantasy and feminism. And don't forget the magic realism of the dog. So did I like the novel and how would I rate it? I'm giving it 4 stars – read my review to find out why. Cleverly written with a quirky and memorable heroine, this is the story of chemist Elizabeth Zott. In the 1950s, when the story begins, it was very nearly impossible to be anything but a housewife/mother, nurse, or secretary. But Elizabeth fights against stereotypes throughout the novel – whether it's cooking, rowing, motherhood, or chemistry. Elizabeth's on-the-spectrum personality (literal, headstrong, blunt) propels the plot. And the plot is brilliant – things happen and people connect (and reconnect) in ways that both surprised me and had me admiring how the author fit everything together. There were several provoking aspects to the story – some of which were the way people misunderstood each other, the sexist attitudes, and how some characters fought against and often overcame the 1950s cultural norms. What gives the novel depth is that the story is told from different characters' points of view, including Six-Thirty, the dog. And these characters were compelling. The reader learns what each is thinking, and why, and we can often anticipate the way things will be misunderstood, which makes for laughs as well as sighs. While the book contains a great deal of wit, as another reviewer mentioned, there are serious issues including brutal abuse which is described in detail, and a suicide due to homophobia. And the sexism is rampant which unfortunately was how it was back in the 1950s, with some areas still troublesome today. But in the end the bad guys get their comeuppance, with loose ends tied up, providing a satisfying conclusion.PhyllisE

Reviews:
A incredibly powerful memoir about how a young daughter of a large isolationist, religious family that views government hospitals and schools with great suspicion grows up and through a series of decisions becomes a Harvard and Cambridge educated scholar. This story provides the space to contemplate some difficult but highly relevant topics such as self identity vs family ties, ones childhood memories vs memories of others you grew up with, loving ones family even when one's been ostracized. While some of the childhood stories are dark in nature and even frightening at times, it's also really funny at many points. Overall, just an incredibly powerful story that touches on self identity, self preservation, growing past very difficult childhood challenges, learning to deal with dysfunctional families, and ultimately about being true to ones self.jbtwarehouse
Difficult to read. Impossible to put down. A powerful, powerful book that you shouldn’t miss. I can’t just leave it at that because Tara Westover’s story deserves more than those few words. I don’t often read memoirs, but when I do I want them to be told by extraordinary people who have a meaningful story to tell and that would be faint praise for this book. It sounds odd to say how beautifully written this is because we are not spared of the ugly details of what this family was about, but yet it is beautifully written. I had to remind myself at times that I wasn’t reading a gritty novel, that Tara and her family were real as I got more than just a glimpse of a life that was hard for me to even imagine.prem.p
I have mixed feelings about this book. It was a difficult read, and for numerous reasons, the first being Tara's childhood. It's very difficult to imagine her life when I have no reference point, having had a "normal" childhood. She has no reference point to compare to her traumatic childhood, thus bringing her to spontaneously go back to her childhood home periodically, with the hope that things would change for the better. Her quest for knowledge outweighed her fears of failure, although failure was always a component in her mind. Her strength overcame her weaknesses, which is an amazing attainment! I must commend her for her continued drive to survive her past, and become a hero for others to admire and respect. Take the time to read this eye-opening memoir!Nancee

we have used it for many years and the Graduates love it. TedTheodore M.
I loved the layout of this book, and how the topics are organized with verses. This is a great resource for graduates to quickly look up a topic that is important to them and find a selection of verses that apply to that topic. The reason I didn't give 5 stars is because of the section on Salvation. It gives only a partial view of what is necessary for salvation, rather than a complete view. Graduates need to have the whole picture available to them (i.e. including baptism and following God's commandments) rather than only the "feel good" verses pointing toward a "faith only" view of salvation. Thankfully, there is enough room at the end to add in additional verses regarding salvation so our graduates would have the whole story to reference when they are seeking.Bradley C.

Reviews:
This is a good book, but could be even more basic. The overall lesson is "Keep your mouth shut until you know what you're talking about and who likes or dislikes what you plan to talk about." Overall, it was worth the money, even for a high school graduate. What I was looking for, though, was one that not only told about office politics, but silly stuff such as: 1. Show up on time (nothing may be said, but it's certainly noted.) 2. Self abuse is no excuse (A hangover is not a reason for a sick day.) 3. Iron your clothes (Casual is not sloppy.) 4. Your political opinion is irrelevant (We're here to make money, not debate.) 5. Shave (Stubble is unbecoming.) 6. You represent the company wherever you go and whatever you do (Don't embarrass us.) 7. Cover that tattoo (I see you're a slave to fashion and don't think much about the future.) 8. It all pays the same (I'm sorry that wasn't in your job description. Adapt.) I could go on and on. Maybe I'll write a book…robert4800
