Gretchen Rubin has come to the realization that she is not focusing on the things in life that really matter. While riding the city bus one day she looks out the window to see a woman about her age trying to balance an umbrella look at her cell phone and push a stroller while carrying a child. The site of it gave her a jolt. She saw herself riding the same crosstown bus everyday back and forth; This is my life-but I never give any thought to it." She realized she was suffering from a midlife malaise; although she lived a very fortunate life something was still missing. I read this to my child everynight and she loves it. We both love its content, illustration and wordings. She's only 4 years old and she understands it quite easily. I have and always will consider myself a writer. I prefer to express myself through self reflection, cataloging and memoir-ing. I am a self-proclaimed journal addict. Recently, I have been lacking the drive to write for my own pleasure. Between running after two small children, taking care of a house and finding time to sneak in my class work for college, I find myself wiped at the end of the day and in no state to dole out several pages in my journal like I would love to these days. I read the description of Instant Happiness Journal and knew it would be a perfect fit for me. Having it in front of me now, I am not disappointed in the least. This little journal is perfect! It features 365 inspiring, joyful prompts to write on every day. There is no pressure to write loads on each prompt; I feel like this is a quick inspirational journal that I could keep up with on a daily basis even when I feel like I zero time to write. That being said, there isn’t any pressure to make this a daily journal as there is a place to write the date on every page. I feel like I could jump all over the journal if I wanted to instead of going in chronological order. The prompts themselves are really great too. I can see myself working in this journal on a regular basis to help me find more happiness in day to day life. as a state expert in behavior and behavioral change, 20 professional presentations, six years teaching psych, twenty years of helping folks overcome addiction and trauma, I know a little bit about this topic. I do agree with the authors that a weekend experiential seminar is not worth much, however, their very independent or anti-dependent, focus on 'autonomy' is similar to the eighties and the kind of new aged woo woo that is preached in those types of seminars. the book is boring, the typical self help story-line, an imaginary teacher and student. humans are a combination of nature, nurture, and self choice, to state that trauma has no impact is dangerous, read up on the ACE study to learn more. Our genes play a large role in personality, like my mom said, all three boys (sons of hers), came out different, one now has a ph.d. in math, one a masters in education and a bachelors in biology, and of course me, masters in counseling/psychology. Can obstacles be overcome, of course they can, we can change, about a third of who we are, but//and our general nature of who we are, will also remain the same. self help books like this are worthless, try a group experience, Alanon, AA, NAMI, on a regular, at least weekly basis, others, anything from ballroom dance to yoga to karate,and therapy, and guaranteed, in about a years you will see some impactful change. don't buy into the simplistic, dichotomous, viewpoint of a book like this one.lewigalwa-0
Easy to read self-help book. I'm halfway through and I like that the book keeps its focus on a central principle – the Adlerian psychology. I've read and liked so much the 7 Habits of Highly Effective People which according to the this book is also following principles from Alfred Adler. Knowing this made me more interested in this book and curious as to how the youth will transform his views towards the end. I highly recommend this book to anyone wanting to know more about life and wanting to learn how to live simply and happily.marap-ric

I have just ordered two more copies, after only reading the intro.—and Prof. Peterson's numerous interviews simply expand my own heart. In this climate of high anxiety and appalling lack of compassion, echoed by Hugh MacKay in AUSTRALIA REIMAGINED. It is no wonder that he has an enthralled audience of millions, world- wide. My wish is that Prof. Peterson will produce a primer affirming our children and youth, to give them hope— for our learning young to master before they get to our Uni's. that have to do their own serious reflecting. In my opinion. AND to give our valiant teachers stronger morale and endurance—as so vividly depicted in Gabbie Stroud's TEACHER, also published last year. This is the third book I purchase as a gift. Jordan Peterson tells it as it is in how one should behave to be a functional human being in society. This is sadly supposed to be the role of parents but not many parents nurture their kids anymore by teaching them the basic life skills. I've seen so many young people can't keep their own room organised yet trying to solve the world's most complex problem. Let's keep it to basic – stand up straight, make yourself better than who you are yesterday and clean up your room before you try to solve any life's complex problem. You will be more content and happier in life and no longer feeling depressed all the time. Great for both men, women and anyone. I'm a woman who loves this book. An excellent book written with great depth and understanding about living a life. It is necessary to read at least twice to get a more complete picture of what Peterson is on about. Best of all this book made me think deeply about living a life and the ultimate ending of that life. Highly recommended but only to serious readers and certainly not for shallow thinking people.Bob
