1. Sapiens: A Brief History Of Humankind [Book]
Product Details:
Official u.s. edition with full color illustrations throughout.new york times bestsellera summer reading pick for president barack obama, bill gates, and mark zuckerberg from a renowned historian comes a groundbreaking narrative of humanity’s creation and evolution—a #1 international bestseller—that explores the ways in which biology and history have defined us and enhanced our understanding of what it means to be “human.” one hundred thousand years ago, at least six different species of humans inhabited earth. yet today there is only one—homo sapiens. what happened to the others? and what may happen to us? most books about the history of humanity pursue either a historical or a biological approach, but dr. yuval noah harari breaks the mold with this highly original book that begins about 70,000 years ago with the appearance of modern cognition. from examining the role evolving humans have played in the global ecosystem to charting the rise of empires, sapiens integrates history and science to reconsider accepted narratives, connect past developments with contemporary concerns, and examine specific events within the context of larger ideas.dr. harari also compels us to look ahead, because over the last few decades humans have begun to bend laws of natural selection that have governed life for the past four billion years. featuring 27 photographs, 6 maps, and 25 illustrations/diagrams, this provocative and insightful work is sure to spark debate and is essential reading for aficionados of jared diamond, james gleick, matt ridley, robert wright, and sharon moalem.
Reviews:
Sapiens is an insightful, history-laden explanation of how and why we humans organize ourselves the way we do. At the same time, it's a readable story of human history. Harari is an apt guide who doesn't preach, but lays out for us how we may have come by some of our inner workings. At a time when the future looks opaque, an unflinching look at our past can do wonders. I read all three Harari books this past summer, but found Sapiens to be the most compelling and important work of the three. A book that will change your mind, if you're open to it.jwregularguy
The book is a modern day classic which tries to reason why certain decisions were chosen over the other and how these decisions have shaped up the course of human history. While giving us potential explanations, Yuval also reminds us that these are mere speculations or theories and nobody can be sure what was going inside the minds of homo sapiens at that time. Some chapters are a bit of a stretch, though when someone tries to summarize the course of 70,000 years of human history into 416 pages, one can hardly complain. I have given an extra star for BookishSanta team who have provided the book in original (color edition) form with a nice touch of handwritten note.Utkarsh Y.
I really enjoyed this book. It is well written and had me gripped from page one. The author puts things into perspective – drawing analogies and parallels – that is shocking , surprising and even funny. I felt a number of emotions reading this, from ignorance, astonishing intellect, shock, horror, surprise, anger, sadness, hunger? I highly recommend for anyone looking for a easy, albeit enlightening read about the development of human, society and life as we know it.Gene

3. A History Of The World In 6 Glasses [Book]
Product Details:
New york times bestsellerfrom beer to coca-cola, the six drinks that have helped shape human history. throughout human history, certain drinks have done much more than just quench thirst. as tom standage relates with authority and charm, six of them have had a surprisingly pervasive influence on the course of history, becoming the defining drink during a pivotal historical period. a history of the world in 6 glasses tells the story of humanity from the stone age to the 21st century through the lens of beer, wine, spirits, coffee, tea, and cola. beer was first made in the fertile crescent and by 3000 b.c.e. was so important to mesopotamia and egypt that it was used to pay wages. in ancient greece wine became the main export of her vast seaborne trade, helping spread greek culture abroad. spirits such as brandy and rum fueled the age of exploration, fortifying seamen on long voyages and oiling the pernicious slave trade. although coffee originated in the arab world, it stoked revolutionary thought in europe during the age of reason, when coffeehouses became centers of intellectual exchange. and hundreds of years after the chinese began drinking tea, it became especially popular in britain, with far-reaching effects on british foreign policy. finally, though carbonated drinks were invented in 18th-century europe they became a 20th-century phenomenon, and coca-cola in particular is the leading symbol of globalization.for tom standage, each drink is a kind of technology, a catalyst for advancing culture by which he demonstrates the intricate interplay of different civilizations. you may never look at your favorite drink the same way again.
Reviews:
With so many books to buy for school, this one saved us $21.00 vs what it cost at the bookstore! Many thanks!!!cheerdiva
One will never think of most "drinks" in the same way after reading Standage's excellent book. His chronicle of the world's favorite libations is historical and very in depth — revealing much of the social and political forces that influenced just what the average "joe or jane" was reaching for on a daily basis (throughout the eons) to quench his thirst or to help get her through their day. This is fun, lighter reading for any lover of historical or social books — I liked it and also learned a lot from it…though I did find myself craving a good drink more than once while I was reading it! Honestly, this book is like my favourite book to ever exist. I love the way Donna Tartt expresses each character, the descriptions of each character, the imagery, it's just so perfect, I wish it was turned into a movie.I would love to see the way Donna would work with the directors and producers to portray this book, but it's just so perfect I'm going to read it over and over again.
I had high hopes for this book and it honestly let me down. The entire thing was anticlimactic. The characters didn't have much of a personality and I felt that many IMPORTANT things were missed out on since the narrator often wasn't included in events, he was just told about them later. I gave the book two stars because I enjoyed the writing style, but the overall story didn't appeal to me.SAVVY

Excellent book! David Barton shows the truth about slavery in a simple and matter of fact form with evidence to back up his book. You will learn that it wasn't the Republicans that were the racists, but the democrats. Republicans were anti-slavery. The Democrats did everything that they could do to prevent the freedom of slaves. Democrats were the Ku Klux Klan. However, if you hear Democrats talk today and do not look up the facts of history, you will be fooled about who wanted slavery and who didn't.raiderslane40
David Barton has the largest collection of original documents from our great forefathers. His books are about the contents of his documents. Its not a right or left leaning book. It merely presents the facts from his documents (original journals, books, letters, minutes from meetings, etc. P Wilson took all black history out of his rewritten history books. Wilson also brought the KKK into the White House. Bartons book tells the truth about Americas great black historycapturedbykssandra
David Barton is the real deal. He works tirelessly to resesrch the subject matter he is writing on, in this case, the magnificent, often lost history, of African-Americans in this nations history. You will learn about people hidden from view, but we wouldn't all be here without them.betmilliga0

7. Heroes Of History: A Brief History Of Civilization From Ancient Times To The Dawn Of The Modern Age [Book]
Product Details:
In the tradition of his own bestselling masterpieces the story of civilization and the lessons of history, pulitzer prize-winning historian will durant here traces the lives and ideas of those who have helped to define civilization, from its dawn to the beginning of the modern world. four years before his death, will durant began work on an abbreviated version of his highly acclaimed eleven-volume series, the story of civilization. the project was conceived as a series of audio lectures, but durant soon realized that the dialogues could be developed into a book that would serve as a wonderfully readable introduction to the subject of history. durant completed twenty-one of a proposed twenty-three chapters before his death in 1981, at the age of ninety-six. those chapters span thousands of years of human history — from confucius to shakespeare, from the roman empire to the reformation, finally ending in the eighteenth century. the manuscript was recently found by will durant scholar john little — twenty years after durant finished it — and its discovery is a major event, not only for lovers of his prose, but for students of history and philosophy the world over. heroes of history is a book of life-enhancing wisdom and optimism, complete with durant's wit, knowledge, and unique ability to explain events and ideas in simple, exciting terms. it is the lessons of our heritage passed on for the edification and benefit of future generations — a fitting legacy from america's most beloved historian and philosopher. will durant's popularity as america's favorite teacher of history and philosophy remains undiminished by time. his books are accessible to readers of every kind, and his unique ability to compress complicated ideas and events into a few pages without ever "talking down" to the reader, enhanced by his memorable wit and a razor-sharp judgment about men and their motives, made all of his books huge bestsellers. heroes of history carries on this tradition of making scholarship and philosophy understandable to the general reader, and making them good reading, as well. will durant's work is marked by his own special quality as a writer — he is tough-minded, optimistic, courageous, and convinced that without a knowledge of the past there is no wisdom to guide us to the future. heroes of history was his last word on the subject, and much of it has been aimed directly at the doubts and fears of people today. it is a major, and unexpected, literary and historical event. this book is also available on audio tape and cd format, read by will and ariel durant.

14. Don't Know Much About History: Everything You Need To Know About American History But Never Learned [Book]
Product Details:
A new, completely revised, expanded and updated edition of the million-selling new york times bestseller that launched the entire don't know much about series when don't know much about history first appeared thirteen years ago, it created a sensation. with humor, wit, great stories, and a trademark conversational style, the book brought americans a fresh new take on history. shattering myths and vividly bringing the past to life, it spent thirty-five consecutive weeks on the new york times bestseller list. davis proved that americans don't hate history — they just hate the dull textbook version they were force-fed in school. the book became an instant classic, an "anti -textbook" that has sold more than 1.3 million copies. in his irreverent and popular question-and- answer style, davis now returns with a completely revised edition that brings history right up to the moment — covering such topics as the end of the cold war, clinton's impeachment, the bizarre election of 2000, and the events that led to september 11. incorporating new research and discoveries, davis also updates and expands on such long-standing american controversies as the jefferson-hemings affair, the alger hiss trial, and the rosenberg spy case. and he includes an expanded "civics lesson" that examines some of america's hottest social and political issues, such as the death penalty, gun control, and school prayer. for history buffs and history-phobes alike, longtime fans who need a refresher course, and for a new generation of americans who are still in the dark about america's past, davis proves once more why people magazine said, "reading him is like returning to the classroom of the best teacher you ever had."

Being a child of the 70's, I was never really taught much about US history (or any history for that matter). What little bit they DID teach was boring as hell. I watched the HBO mini series "John Adams" and really enjoyed it. I would watch the repeats and sit with my laptop Googling different topics that came up in the show. Went fishing the following week with a high school buddy who is now a history teacher and I explained to him that I never really learned much about history and asked him what would be a good book to read. Well, he gave me a tattered paperback copy of "Don't Know Much About History". I couldn't put it down! I learned so much stuff I never knew about history that I am going to read it again so I can take it all in!! This book should be required reading in high school!!!!drhardcrab

All excellent thank youPeter
This book is brilliant for anyone wanting to understand medieval history and how it affected our modern civilisation, including beyond Europe. It is endlessly informative but in a dynamic, engaging fashion that no textbook could hope to achieve. It really is the story of the medieval world. Naturally, anyone hoping for extremely specific facts might be disappointed, as it doesn't spend hours on a single slice of history, but I think this is a great jumping off point for those wanting to actually research such content in academia. And, as a bonus, it has several neat maps!Sir Archeren

20. Homo Deus: A Brief History Of Tomorrow [Ebook]
Product Details:
Official u.s. edition with full color illustrations throughout. – new york times bestseller yuval noah harari, author of the critically-acclaimed new york times bestseller and international phenomenon sapiens, returns with an equally original, compelling, and provocative book, turning his focus toward humanity’s future, and our quest to upgrade humans into gods. – over the past century humankind has managed to do the impossible and rein in famine, plague, and war. this may seem hard to accept, but, as harari explains in his trademark style—thorough, yet riveting—famine, plague and war have been transformed from incomprehensible and uncontrollable forces of nature into manageable challenges. for the first time ever, more people die from eating too much than from eating too little; more people die from old age than from infectious diseases; and more people commit suicide than are killed by soldiers, terrorists and criminals put together. the average american is a thousand times more likely to die from binging at mc – donalds than from being blown up by al qaeda. – what then will replace famine, plague, and war at the top of the human agenda? homo deus explores the projects, dreams and nightmares that will shape the twenty-first century—from overcoming death to creating artificial life. this is the next stage of evolution. – with the same insight and clarity that made sapiens an international hit and a new york times bestseller, harari maps out our future.

I couldn't stop reading his previous book Sapiens, and was super keen on both Deus and the 21 Lessons books. Deus is still mostly about the past, and only the last quarter of the book touches on the future. There's still some great insights, but more could have been done with the discussion on AI, nanotechnology, and whether humans are upgraded or replaced. Less on the past and more on the future would have scored 5 stars.David L
Interesting view of the future, oversimplified in places. It provides one view of the future that is quite compelling and worth reading about. IMHO, it overstates the probability of transition from task specific AI to generalised AI. It also completely overlooks the role of complexity and emergence in the way it describes living organisms and organic brains as merely algorithms.
The subject matter is very important for an understanding of our past and future. His revision of the more traditional parameters for describing the past of homo sapiens is thought provoking, but he does not seek the false status of an "authority". He writes clearly and with sufficient detail but without swamping the reader with indigestible facts. The reader is able to move on their thinking, but will definitely keep the volumes for regular future reference,sbgarton2012
