A while back I decided I wanted to learn a little bit of Spanish, and I do not have the time to take a formal course. Having heard about the "Pimsleur approach", I thought this would be worth a try. I am in the process of going through this course right now and I have to say, "This works". It takes some effort on your part, it takes some concentration and some dedication but it does work! You are called upon to speak the words yourself, both to practice pronunciation and to train your ear to the sounds of the Spanish language and it is advisable to do this. In the first session, you start out listening to a Spanish conversation, which is, of course, gibberish if you are unfamiliar with the language. By the end of that first session, a mere thirty minutes later, IT MAKES SENSE! Every session thereafter introduces you to a few new words. I do find myself having to repeat sessions so my progress is slower than expected but these are CD's and you can re-play them as often as needed. I am finding that I can now pick out words from a Spanish conversation (or from music), which I never understood before. Yesterday, I was able to complete a transaction at an ATM machine "en Espanol". If you need to gain some skills with Spanish or any other foreign language, try the Pimsleur approach!jm_chessman
I wanted to learn to speak enough Spanish to converse in at least a limited with people I meet that are native Spanish speakers and limited in English. I have only spent about 2 hours so far with the Pimsleur product, but I am very happy with it at this point. The words do seem to stay with me even days or weeks after first learning them. The repetition and pronunciation pointers work very well for me in recalling the meaning. A number of words I had never heard before seem well-impressed in my memory. I bought this product because I have I bought a business with a lot of Spanish speaking customers. I love the fact that it's 100% on cd's because I spend a lot of time in my car. The only little flaw I've seen is I think it's from a little bit different region of Mexico than near southern Arizona so I've already been told a couple of the words and phrases are a little off but everyone knows what I mean. I've already recommended this product to many people. And actually I rented one from the library first to try it out.
