Reviews:
I started this book with my 4.5 year old in November. Letter names and sounds were mostly recognized. However, with preschool closed since March, he had stalled there. His love of books had not translated to reading skills. This book breaks each lesson into small, repeating tasks. Reading letters, reading sounds, reading words, reading sentences, and eventually, reading stories. No fun games. No color pictures. It could be difficult to get an easily distracted preschooler incentivized to complete these "100 easy lessons" in anything resembling 20 minutes. But slowly, he started to get it. He still complained, but began to take an interest in the stories. He started to recognize sounds in the word readings. Then he began to tear through the word reading, and only struggle through the now progressively longer stories. Then, even the stories became manageable. He would still struggle on certain words, but others he began to memorize. Others he'd learned to sound out. There were patterns in what he struggled with, but he had our individual attention to help him. His writing skills improved so much, even his drawing ability improved. As we reached the end of the book, he was reading multiple paragraphs. The once tedious 'reading class' with a grumpy toddler was now 20 minutes of reading and questions. It requires perseverance, but you *can* teach your child to read. With the book complete, he's now onto reading usborne easy readers. He reads picture books like "bad dog" (by M. Bolt) and 'frog on a log" (by Kes Grey) and laughs. He enthusiastically chooses from library books, just like before, but doesn't scoff when asked to read them, rather than be read to. And he can now, thanks to this book.Sarah
I have an early reader, getting stuck on phonetic exceptions and I was hoping this would help (at least help me to guide them). This is a systematic guide using early childhood principles of repetition, and repetition doesn't work for many neurodiverse learners, and no gifted learners. It'd be great for tiger parents wanting their kids with zero phonemic awareness to start school ahead of the pack, or kids with special learning needs who need to take a step back with lots of simple repetition. I fell asleep on the first page, and if my child had seen it they would have looked at me like I had 2 heads and wouldn't have finish half of the first lesson.Jim the walker
Does exactly what it says it does. I was struggling to teach my daughter how to read – even though she is a bright and eager learner – for all the reasons explained in the book's preface. We're less than 20 lessons into the book and my 4 year old is already reading words on her own! I couldn't have taught her without this book's guidance. It's easy to follow, but parents: you HAVE TO read the preface and do exactly what it says to do, in the way it says to do it. Just follow what they author instructs and everything falls into place. I will definitely be keeping this to help my son learn to read when he's old enough.shortie536

Reviews:
Really happy I have found these books, from doing lots of searching online for some different first readers for my son. They are perfect for the level he is at in prep at the moment, we can sound out the words together. He really likes the different little stories in the book & the line drawings. Very happy to have found these series of books.Sarah
I've purchased many sets of early readers but most have been predictable text which means the little ones can guess or memorise the word. This set is truly decodable and starts very very easy! Meaning they have to sound out the letters for the words. I'm going on to purchase the whole set! If your little one knows the alphabet and is working on letter sounds they will be able to read these books!Tash
My youngest child enjoys these short, little books. These help build his confidence with small sentences. His attention span is short. He tends to opt for these books, so he can read all by himself. It warms this mother’s heart.candy.s

We used the brand new version I am not terribly familiar with the older version but the new one has a red level for pre-reading Purple for K Green for 1st grade and Blue for 2nd grade I didn't purchase the red set because my son already knew all of his letter sounds The Purple K level of this program was terrific I was having difficulty teaching my son to blend the letter sounds to make words and this program worked great to teach him that I really liked the little purple books and the reading in the manual was great too My son really liked the videos HOP also has a website where I can download free worksheets and other activities for the lessons What I did not like about this program was the other books The books that didn't have purple covers seemed to be just thrown into the program with no rhyme or reason The program waits until the Blue 2nd grade level to introduce long vowels but they are in these reading books as early as the K program If your child is really good at guessing or has tried another phonics program this might work but my son just found it extremely frustrating I insisted he finish the first half of the green 1st grade program but it was like pulling teeth and after that I gave up Now I have the very difficult problem of placing a child who can read short vowel words into another program when most other programs introduce the short and long vowels early on In short the K level was great but be prepared to backtrack a bit into another phonics program after that
My granddaugther is in kindergarten and the presentation of the material is entertaining for her.Randall
My daughter loves it. It's really helpful to learn phonics!!Angela

Reviews:
The best early reading book! Finally found a book my daughters can read without getting frustrated. The first 20 pages have stories with short “a” sound (furthermore arranged per word families), then they introduced another short vowel sound for the next 10 pages and occasionally slip in one consonant blend into a word, later adding a word here or there with consonant blends at both beginning and end of a word. And the amazing thing to me is that with all this attention to detail to slowly build up reading skills without frustrating an emergent reader these stories actually make sense and even made me laugh a few times. After buying multiple sets of Level 1 books just to experience my daughter’s frustration because they all had too many reading concepts we now have a book she actually likes to read and watching her reading progress is amazing.Ivet
I purchased these 4 books on a whim. They were worth it! I have had all my kids struggle to grasp reading concepts. The stories start out very simple and short, giving your child a sense of accomplishment without the frustration. They finished something. The way it works, is you read the word list in the black word list book. We practice that word list, by building (with tiles), writing, spelling, using the words in a sentence, and playing various games. Once they can easily read that list, we read the stories that go along with it. The table of contents tells you the breakdown of each lesson. Usually it took us a week to do the list and the stories. We paired this with explode the code workbooks. My little two were needing remedial help after completing another program, and this really filled in the gaps. It was inexpensive, and very simple.Naomi
These books helped my daughter to progress in learning to read without getting frustrated. I wish I found these before ai tried several sets of “learn to read” books which all contained words well beyond the very first steps in reading. Thank you so much to the authors, and yes, the stories are good!Ivet

Reviews:
This book is so fun! It doesn't make noises or pop-up or have any buttons or bells and whistles but it still is so much fun to read to the kids and gets them to participate in book time. We love this book so much!
A wonderful book allowing the readers to have fun while teaching young children to follow directions. I purchased this book from a school book fair one year not realizing how much enjoyment my family would have reading this book. I have never seen my grand children laugh so hard as we sat around the table and enjoyed following the directions inside this book. I can still "see" the reactions the younger ones had when they turned the pages to find out what the result of following the directions given to them revealed. I recommend this book for pure fun and for teaching younger children how to follow directions without teaching them to follow directions. We love to read books and learn something new. This book provided a fun and interactive way to learn the concept of following directions every child needs to learn to follow for everyday life to ready them for their school journey. It has been loaned to others to enjoy as well. We still read this book today after five years receiving the same teary eyes laughs we had from the first reading adventure.laffs54
This book is absolutely perfect for early learners. It is great for receptive language skills and learning simple directions (as well as counting, colors, etc). It also is good for teaching cause and effect. For example, tap the dot 5 times, and then when you flip the page there is 5 times the number of dots. Really just a great interactive teaching book.Liz

After an introduction and note to parents, there are twenty-five short stories that focus on two sight words and are four pages long, followed by a page of word writing and an activity that may be to color, search, connect, or find the special words. Our six-year-old granddaughter is starting read so needs a hands-on book that she can work on during the corona pandemic. I like that the stories concentrate on two words and are simple to follow. Those who learn to read phonetically may not like a book that is about sight-reading. Some beginner readers may be frustrated with the two-syllable words in some stories. I wish the ages suggested online of three to five years old and grades of three and four were changed to their appropriate number. I sincerely doubt most five-year-olds can read at this level and first and second graders would best be suited for this read. If your child is starting to read by sight and not by phonetics, this book for five- to seven-year-olds may be helpful. Thanks to Callisto Publisher's Club and the author for this complimentary that I am under no obligation to review.Connywithay
