3. Sapiens: A Brief History Of Humankind [Book]

Product Details:
Official u.s. edition with full color illustrations throughout.new york times bestsellera summer reading pick for president barack obama, bill gates, and mark zuckerberg from a renowned historian comes a groundbreaking narrative of humanity’s creation and evolution—a #1 international bestseller—that explores the ways in which biology and history have defined us and enhanced our understanding of what it means to be “human.” one hundred thousand years ago, at least six different species of humans inhabited earth. yet today there is only one—homo sapiens. what happened to the others? and what may happen to us? most books about the history of humanity pursue either a historical or a biological approach, but dr. yuval noah harari breaks the mold with this highly original book that begins about 70,000 years ago with the appearance of modern cognition. from examining the role evolving humans have played in the global ecosystem to charting the rise of empires, sapiens integrates history and science to reconsider accepted narratives, connect past developments with contemporary concerns, and examine specific events within the context of larger ideas.dr. harari also compels us to look ahead, because over the last few decades humans have begun to bend laws of natural selection that have governed life for the past four billion years. featuring 27 photographs, 6 maps, and 25 illustrations/diagrams, this provocative and insightful work is sure to spark debate and is essential reading for aficionados of jared diamond, james gleick, matt ridley, robert wright, and sharon moalem.
Reviews:
Sapiens is an insightful, history-laden explanation of how and why we humans organize ourselves the way we do. At the same time, it's a readable story of human history. Harari is an apt guide who doesn't preach, but lays out for us how we may have come by some of our inner workings. At a time when the future looks opaque, an unflinching look at our past can do wonders. I read all three Harari books this past summer, but found Sapiens to be the most compelling and important work of the three. A book that will change your mind, if you're open to it.jwregularguy
The book is a modern day classic which tries to reason why certain decisions were chosen over the other and how these decisions have shaped up the course of human history. While giving us potential explanations, Yuval also reminds us that these are mere speculations or theories and nobody can be sure what was going inside the minds of homo sapiens at that time. Some chapters are a bit of a stretch, though when someone tries to summarize the course of 70,000 years of human history into 416 pages, one can hardly complain. I have given an extra star for BookishSanta team who have provided the book in original (color edition) form with a nice touch of handwritten note.Utkarsh Y.
I really enjoyed this book. It is well written and had me gripped from page one. The author puts things into perspective – drawing analogies and parallels – that is shocking , surprising and even funny. I felt a number of emotions reading this, from ignorance, astonishing intellect, shock, horror, surprise, anger, sadness, hunger? I highly recommend for anyone looking for a easy, albeit enlightening read about the development of human, society and life as we know it.Gene

#1 new york times bestseller – goodreads choice award winner – meet elizabeth zott: a “formidable, unapologetic and inspiring” (parade) scientist in 1960s california whose career takes a detour when she becomes the unlikely star of a beloved tv cooking show in this novel that is “irresistible, satisfying and full of fuel” (the new york times book review) and “witty, sometimes hilarious . . . the catch-22 of early feminism.” (stephen king, via twitter) a best book of the year: the new york times, washington post, npr, oprah daily, entertainment weekly, newsweek“the most delightful novel i read this year . . . fresh and surprising . . . i laughed out loud!” —philip galanes, the new york times "a unique heroine . . . you'll find yourself wishing she wasn’t fictional." —seattle times chemist elizabeth zott is not your average woman. in fact, elizabeth zott would be the first to point out that there is no such thing as an average woman. but it’s the early 1960s and her all-male team at hastings research institute takes a very unscientific view of equality. except for one: calvin evans; the lonely, brilliant, nobel–prize nominated grudge-holder who falls in love with—of all things—her mind. true chemistry results. but like science, life is unpredictable. which is why a few years later elizabeth zott finds herself not only a single mother, but the reluctant star of america’s most beloved cooking show supper at six. elizabeth’s unusual approach to cooking (“combine one tablespoon acetic acid with a pinch of sodium chloride”) proves revolutionary. but as her following grows, not everyone is happy. because as it turns out, elizabeth zott isn’t just teaching women to cook. she’s daring them to change the status quo. laugh-out-loud funny, shrewdly observant, and studded with a dazzling cast of supporting characters, lessons in chemistry is as original and vibrant as its protagonist.

Entertaining and fast reading. Characters have some depth. Better than a soap opera but not classic.Evy
Thanks to NetGalley & Doubleday Books for a digital advance reader's copy. All comments and opinions are my own. This novel, a debut no less, was all over the place for me. Funny, satirical, sad, ironic, entertaining, witty, with elements of fantasy and feminism. And don't forget the magic realism of the dog. So did I like the novel and how would I rate it? I'm giving it 4 stars – read my review to find out why. Cleverly written with a quirky and memorable heroine, this is the story of chemist Elizabeth Zott. In the 1950s, when the story begins, it was very nearly impossible to be anything but a housewife/mother, nurse, or secretary. But Elizabeth fights against stereotypes throughout the novel – whether it's cooking, rowing, motherhood, or chemistry. Elizabeth's on-the-spectrum personality (literal, headstrong, blunt) propels the plot. And the plot is brilliant – things happen and people connect (and reconnect) in ways that both surprised me and had me admiring how the author fit everything together. There were several provoking aspects to the story – some of which were the way people misunderstood each other, the sexist attitudes, and how some characters fought against and often overcame the 1950s cultural norms. What gives the novel depth is that the story is told from different characters' points of view, including Six-Thirty, the dog. And these characters were compelling. The reader learns what each is thinking, and why, and we can often anticipate the way things will be misunderstood, which makes for laughs as well as sighs. While the book contains a great deal of wit, as another reviewer mentioned, there are serious issues including brutal abuse which is described in detail, and a suicide due to homophobia. And the sexism is rampant which unfortunately was how it was back in the 1950s, with some areas still troublesome today. But in the end the bad guys get their comeuppance, with loose ends tied up, providing a satisfying conclusion.PhyllisE
15. Complete Maus The: A Survivor's Tale By Spiegelman Art

Product Details:
At last! here is the definitive edition of the book acclaimed as the most affecting and successful narrative ever done about the holocaust (wall street journal) and the first masterpiece in comic book history (the new yorker). it now appears as it was originally envisioned by the author: the complete maus.it is the story of vladek spiegelman, a jewish survivor of hitlers europe, and his son, a cartoonist coming to terms with his fathers story. maus approaches the unspeakable through the diminutive. its form, the cartoon (the nazis are cats, the jews mice), shocks us out of any lingering sense of familiarity and succeeds in drawing us closer to the bleak heart of the holocaust (the new york times). maus is a haunting tale within a tale. vladeks harrowing story of survival is woven into the authors account of his tortured relationship with his aging father. against the backdrop of guilt brought by survival, they stage a normal life of small arguments and unhappy visits. this astonishing retelling of our centurys grisliest news is a story of survival, not only of vladek but of the children who survive even the survivors. maus studies the bloody pawprints of history and tracks its meaning for all of us.

First off, do NOT let the cover of this COMIC BOOK throw you off. i get that there is a huge swastika on the cover… and the cover is the firs impression of a book (to most people) but i read this comic book for a college class and it is actually a great comic book. it is a comic book about a Jewish man named Vladek in Auschwitz during WWII. However, what is so interesting about this comic book is that, A) it is a comic book (a funny medium of art to use for a holocaust book, its a little graphic) B) it is read as a third person. its a convo between Vladek and his son. the comic book addresses the complicated relationships between holocaust survivors and the newer generations. i would definitely recommend this comic book. it comes in two parts or you can purchase it in one huge book.susnezra.w
A must read for any person, especially younger people to gain a better understanding of history.idolmind05

Worth every penny!!! My son went from not liking reading to "Ooh, can you buy more in this series?"….blah, blah, blah and so forth! He will not stop talking about this book. Book four had a really good twist, too where some of the good characters had their chance at being a villian…bwhahahahaha!evolvedcomputers

Very comfortable ! Perfect pants for errands, Sunday brunch or a baseball game when jeans just won’t work.Laura G.
Great pants! Exactly what I was looking for. Ordered a size larger to keep them loose. Love them!Randy M.
I really wanted to like these wide-leg pants. I originally bought them in a size 4 (my usual size) but we’re too big so I exchanged them for a size 2. But they’re still a bit loose at the top—maybe I should have sized down even further? And the pant legs are just too wide on me. I am on the shorter side so maybe these look better on a taller person. So I haven’t really been wearing them much which is a shame because the olive green color is just beautiful and the quality of the fabric is very good.Brenda S.
