1. Mere Christianity By C. S Lewis

Product Details:
In 1941 england, when all hope was threatened by the inhumanity of war, c. s. lewis was invited to give a series of radio lectures addressing the central issues of christianity. more than half a century later, these talks continue to retain their poignancy. first heard as informal radio broadcasts on the bbc, the lectures were published as three books and subsequently combined as "mere christianity." c. s. lewis proves that "at the center of each there is something, or a someone, who against all divergences of belief, all differences of temperament, all memories of mutual persecution, speaks with the same voice," rejecting the boundaries that divide christianity's many denominations. this twentieth century masterpiece provides an unequaled opportunity for believers and nonbelievers alike to hear a powerful, rational case for the christian faith. with a new foreword by lewis's stepson, douglas gresham, this illustrated gift edition evokes the historic time and place of the book's creation.
Reviews:
I love reading books cover to cover, so I always read the forward and intro’s. So worth it and helpful to understanding Lewis’ context and where the book is coming from. He’s been my favorite author since I was a kid yet I hadn’t gotten around to reading all of his titles. So this is helping me on my way. Format is lovely, the pages alternate in width in a nice pattern that’s comfortable for my fingers to skim through, the font size is easy to read and it reads like a bit of a conversation (which was the intent, being transcribed from a radio broadcast series).Cass M.
How many of us are prepared to answer the hard questions of life? So many times when people ask difficult questions about Christianity and the way Christians see the world we are not ready to give an answer This classic book by CS Lewis can help remedy that issue Although the book was written way back in the 1940's the contents are timeless After all the condition of man has changed little over the centuries We still wrestle with the same issues and questions that men have struggled with through the agesIs there a God? Why should we believe in Him? If he is so good why does he allow so much bad in our world? Is Jesus really the Son of God? Why did Jesus have to Die? All these hard questions are answered in Mere Christianity Not only are the answers there they are remarkably easy to understand given the weightiness of the topics These topics were originally a series of BBC discussions; later in life CS Lewis added to them and published them in book form However he attempted to keep the informal tone to his works to keep them as down to earth and understandable to as many people as possible It is my opinion that he succeeded This would be a great resource for older teens and young adults going away to college In the society in which we now live where the basic tenets of Christianity are under continual attack it is essential that young and old alike be well grounded in the faith Many times Christians may have great faith but lack the ability to explain it to others This book by CS Lewis will help with that While this paperback may be inexpensive the contents are quite valuable
Clive Lewis is an amazing layman Christian. If you are already a Christian you will find insight and understanding for living the life and walking the walk. If you are a seeker and not yet surrendered you will find encouragement for your journey. In this book he presents the argument for the golden rule of doing unto others as you would have them do unto you. It is not "In your face, repent or suffer." He presents the Christian walk with common sense and day to day living. I love this guy.navion01

Reviews:
Faith building, encouraging life words, I am barely beginning to apply these lessons to living a life honorably and loving God with all my heart. God will keep me on track and by His Holy Spirit I will one day stand complete in His presence. A time consuming book, one to share with others!Rita H.
Rick Warren's book was for years simply a concept that I used by simply "ideizing" the title for "doing things on purpose" to meet a goal of good results. As I've gotten older, I have been becoming more of a Bible reader and a Church goer. Rick really delivers a multi-purpose toolkit with this excellent book. So far, I been using it as a daily reflections, a random study kit, and a source of inspirational ponder. (It's suggested as a "narrative through" as it were)diontheon21
I really enjoyed this book! I even had the study guide which was a nice touch. I am a reborn Christian and this gave me a lot of things to think about an craving to now look into. I never realized how important it is to have a great fellowship to be apart of and how important it is to have an amazing accountability partner. Rick Warren put his words out amazing that I didn't want to put this book down. What on Earth Am I Here For? Expanded Edition (The Purpose Driven Life)ashley .j
5. When Strivings Cease: Replacing The Gospel Of Self-Improvement With The Gospel Of Life-Transforming Grace [Book]

Product Details:
Bestselling author, entrepreneur, and speaker ruth chou simons calls women to discover how god's profound gift of grace and favor invites them to rest from chasing approval and earning love, and instead discover the freedom of true belonging and worth that doesn't depend on them.in this hustling, image-forward age of opportunity, women are more anxious than ever. as a taiwanese immigrant growing up between two cultures, ruth was always on a mission to prove her worth. until she came to truly understand the one thing that changes everything: the extravagant, undeserved gift of grace from a merciful god. in when strivings cease, ruth guides us all on a journey to find freedom from the never-ending quest for approval and affirmation.
Reviews:
When Strivings Cease is a breath-taking heart challenge to remember that living as a Christian is primarily a relationship; and when that relationship based on grace becomes the core from which my everything flows, there will be rest, peace, and calm in my every day. It is so very true that, "…realigning your mind, heart, and identity to grace, not works is a daily battle." Being a list-making, calendar scheduling, to-do list hustling gal means that I can tend to find so much satisfaction in my checked boxes that I lose sight of what brings real peace and satisfaction. The center of my heart's focus must be the grace of God, the only real enabling power. Ruth's transparency in sharing her own life's journey was inspiring and made me wish for a chance to sit across from her at her kitchen table over coffee! The book arrived, just after sending off my oldest child for several months on his first adventure away from home; and I was wrestling with the "did I do enough, say enough, warn enough, prepare him enough" thoughts. Sometimes strivings need to cease even after the work is done, when our enemy tries to trick us into worry and fear! The book is a refreshing read and a call to simply dwell.BethanyG
If you struggle with thoughts of how you measure up to expectations or feeling like you are exhausted holding your life together, Ruth Chou Simons puts together a biblical guide to learning to reset your heart to focus on the grace upon grace that is more than sufficient to help us through the struggles of life and the expectations our culture places on us! She uses her own life vulnerably as an example of how one can go years living in a mentality of striving even after embracing the gospel. She allows you to see that it takes a daily renewing our minds to actually believe this grace we’ve been given! I appreciated Ruth’s goal, “My goal is to help you realign with what it really means to trust in the grace of God. And to stop thinking of your relationship with Jesus as something adequate to save you from eternal despair but not enough to secure your identity here and now.” Even Christian self-help books often miss the fact that we are striving to be wonder women rather than women who stand in wonder of God’s undeserved grace overflowing in our lives! That is how we can find true joy and true fulfillment only when we see that we’ve been given all we need by the grace of God through the death and resurrection of Jesus adorning our ugly sin with His righteousness! Ruth nails it, “We’re practically hooked up to our self-bettering resources intravenously, so dependent on the latest content in books, podcasts, webinars, and more that we think continually about ourselves: Who am I? What’s my purpose? How do I belong? Am I enough? Does anyone love me? There’s nothing wrong with these questions; the answers just were never meant to be found within ourselves.” But Ruth’s book continually redirects the reader to the Bible and reminds us that this is a daily battle, “I want you to know that realigning your mind, heart, and identity to grace, not works is a daily battle. Don’t be surprised when it’s minute by minute. Don’t be surprised when it’s not instant change. Don’t be surprised when you find yourself needing, once again, to speak against the Enemy’s taunts of discouragement, doubt, and derailing fear.” I highly highly recommend this book to worriers, strivers, rule-followers, controlling types— Basically people like me, who even though their minds know the truth their hearts need to hear it over and over again especially with circumstances (like a worldwide pandemic, political unrest, losing loved ones suddenly, empty nesting…) need to remember that God’s strength is shown in our weakness and we can completely be still and rest in His sovereignty—leading to relief and rejuvenation for our weary souls!MrsOld
I love Ruth Chou Simon‘s beautiful artwork and encouraging social media posts, and I was so excited to read this book. She discusses aspects of her personal testimony and the struggles she faced living in God’s grace as she grew up in a Chinese family with cultural and personal pressures to achieve and strive for certain goals. Although I am not Asian, I have a similar personality and always feel the need to do more and have very high expectations for myself. Some of the quotes that resonated with me most are: – “When we are in Christ, we are simply aware of who we belong to first and foremost. And, friend, that’s when we can let go of all the world tells us to do in order to belong.” – “The sad part is the way we’ve come to determine someone’s worthiness based on our different definitions of acceptability. We e somehow replaced identity with identification. We’ve bought into the paradigm that our “faces”—or Facebook pages, rather—are the summation of who we are.” – “If unchecked against the true character of God and our true identity in Christ, our self-reliance and pride will cause us to resort to shaming and manipulation. And, similarly, if unchecked against the true character of God and our true identity in Christ, our self-condemning shame and feelings of inadequacy will keep us from drawing near—and coming home—to the Lord.” – “Grace is not the reward in itself; knowing Christ is. Grace simply makes it possible for you to stop striving for yourself and strive out of love for God instead. Grace isn’t an excuse to be lazy or apathetic about the marks if a Christian life. Rather, it is the catalyst by which we can partake in it.” I appreciated reading the aspects of Ruth’s personal struggles and growth, and this was the strongest portion of the book to me. I wish she had gone into more detail and allowed us to understand her testimony and see God’s grace in her life more fully. But overall, When Strivings Cease contains a wonderful, truth-filled, much-needed message, and it was a good read.Ed

7. Habits Of Grace: Enjoying Jesus Through The Spiritual Disciplines [Book]

Product Details:

The book is sometimes over my head but I find real value in completing this workbook.richarpas3
We refer to them as "spiritual disciplines," and then we stiffen our upper lip – all the while fumbling tentatively for our boot straps. Then, we proceed to dismiss the more rigorous of the lot (fasting, meditation) as pertinent only to high-power spiritual giants, and it turns out that we've got the wrong idea after all, says David Mathis in Habits of Grace, in which he examines the spiritual disciplines as a means of enhancing the believer's enjoyment of Jesus, a gift that comes through these grace-empowered practices. With a goal of simplifying his readers' approach to the pursuit of holiness, Mathis organizes habits of grace according to three broad principles by which one may walk in the path of God's grace: 1. Hearing God's Voice; 2.Having His Ear; 3.Belonging to His Body. Hearing God's Voice can involve a limitless array of potential practices – reading, studying, memorizing, or meditating on Scripture. However, rather than offering formulaic advice, David Mathis invites the reader to find a regular time and place, to block out distractions, and to "put your nose to the text." I appreciated the advice to go for "breadth in reading" – covering the biblical landscape on a regular basis – but to go for "depth in study" by asking questions, stopping to ponder, and consulting resources. At this point, study may segue into one of the mightiest means of God's grace for His people: meditation or "deep thinking on the truths and spiritual realities revealed in Scripture for the purposes of understanding, application, and prayer." The helpful pattern offered for application of Biblical truth is to read for understanding of the words as they were received by the original audience, to consider how they relate to Jesus' person and work, and only then to make personal application.
8. Confronting Christianity: 12 Hard Questions For The World's Largest Religion [Book]

Rebecca McLaughlin's Confronting Christianity: 12 Hard Questions for the World's Largest Religion lays down a foundation of sinewy truth that pushes back against the temptation of simplistic answers or the tendency toward complacent dismissal of thoughtful skepticism. The truth is that Christianity will stand up to scrutiny, but Christians must also stand up and become informed adherents to our faith as we strive to love God fully-heart, soul, and mind. McLaughlin unpacks twelve questions, incubated in our post-Christian culture, to pound against the pavement of our well-loved orthodoxy.

Reviews:
This book has made my understanding of the reasons behind why people became Christians in the first place clear. It is a profound factual book which lays out the historical evidence of all that Jesus did and people who knew Him did at that time. It also includes references to historical texts existing at the time the bible was written that support the bible as evidence. Well worth the purchase. I am so grateful to have read it. John Rosemond referenced it in "Parenting By the Book" and after implementing the practical advice in the latter and reading the former; my life has become so much easier and happier. It has been an amazing change, and I wish all the same happiness to all who read it.Mother = Leader
This book was an immense help to me in coming to faith in our Lord Jesus Christ. I was over 50 years old before I accepted Jesus as my Lord. Like so many people wrestling with life's problems and questions I had many things which I wanted to know about the truth of Jesus. This book was written by a journalist who started out from an atheist point of view to investigate and disprove the existence & claims of Jesus . Did he really exist ? If so, can we believe his claim to be the Son of God? and did he rise from the dead? Our external fate rests on believing in him – this book brilliantly talks through the doubts many have. The answers shocked the author and changed his life forever.flickydog
The Case for Christ uses scripture and commentary to explore the existence of Christ and how to prove it to oneself or others. The author uses theologically sound arguments based on a series of questions listed below: Questions raised: Can the biographies of Jesus be trusted?Do the biographies of Jesus stand up to scrutiny? Were Jesus' biographies reliably preserved for us?Is there credible evidence for Jesus outside his biographies?Does archaeology confirm or contradict Jesus' biographies? Is the Jesus of history the same as the Jesus of faith? Was Jesus really convinced that he was the son of God?Did Jesus fulfill the attributes of Gof?Did Jesus-And Jesus alone-Match the identity of the Messiah? Was Jesus' death a sham and his resurrection a hoax? Was Jesus' body really absent from his tomb? Was Jesus seen alive after his death on the cross? Are there any supporting facts that point to the resurrection? What does the evidence establish–and what does it mean today? In reading reviews of this book, I noticed that many who are non-believers did not feel that it convinced them of Christ's existence. They felt the book was only useful to Christians. I personally feel that this book would be a helpful tool for Christians to study for the purposes of witnessing to non-believers. Expecting non-believers to voluntarily pick up this book to read it is likely unrealistic if they simply do not care to know as many did state was the case for them. I give this book a 5-star rating and recommend it for seekers and for believers as tool to study or to witness. I received a copy of this book from netgalley. I was not required to write a review. All opinions expressed are my own.rhondagayle

12. Reactivity: How The Gospel Transforms Our Actions And Reactions [Book]

Product Details:
Bestselling author paul david tripp helps christians communicate biblically in a culture of outrage digital media and technology are altering the way people act–and react–toward each other. criticism, outrage, and controversy dominate social engagement and unfortunately many christians have joined in the chaos. it's a troubling contrast to jesus's words in john 13:35: "by this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another." award-winning author paul david tripp instructs believers to view digital media and technology through the lens of the gospel and points them toward a biblical framework for communication. explaining how god wants the church to engage with culture and each other, tripp encourages christians to think wisely about their interactions and be a beacon of light in an age of toxicity. a biblical look at social engagement: discusses wholesome talk, the effects of "cancel culture," and 5 false identity temptations including attention, power, and acceptance applies scripture practically: gives a gospel-centered framework for navigating digital life without confusion or destructive reactivity great for pastors, parents, and youth ministries: helps readers understand who they are in christ so they won't be swayed by a chaotic digital culture
Reviews:
Something has gone wrong with how many Christians react on social media. It has developed into a toxic culture. Tripp initially saw social media as a powerful tool for the gospel. It has developed to a cesspool of anger filled with comments dishonoring God. And, unfortunately, it is becoming normalized, even infecting the church. Tripp is hard hitting in this book. He reminds Christians God has made it clear. The norm for Christians should be love. "Being theologically correct does not give you the license to be mean." (170/1709) He reviews the biblical commands covering our responses and other relationship interactions. Yes, we are to care about truth and justice but there is a godly way to express such concern. I really like Tripp's underlying foundation for our way of understanding and dealing with everything, especially the culture of social media. We are to view everything through the lens of the gospel. The gospel provides us with a way of seeing, a means of interpreting, a guide to understanding, and a way of living. The gospel should shape what we say and how we say it. This is an excellent book for Christians who are concerned about the toxic nature of recent social media conversations. It is also a necessary book for those involved in the heated social media exchanges. Tripp reminds us it has to do with the conditions of the heart and the sin involved. The gospel should be our driving motivation for all we do. Love and showing dignity and respect are to be essential elements of our exchanges. If you are willing to evaluate what you think and say and do through the lens of the gospel, this book is for you. If you are not willing to make that examination, this book is all the more necessary for you. I received a complimentary egalley of this book from the publisher. My comments are an independent and honest review.bookwomanjoan

I have not gone completely into these but I am trying to set aside a time when I can do so without any interruptions, which I seem to have daily. I love what I am reading and learning and I refuse to allow the enemy of this world to stop what I am trying to accomplish and that is to learn even more about the birth of Jesus Christ and how much it has changed my own life. I was 67 when I accepted Jesus Christ as my Lord and Savior and I am now 87 heading towards 88 next year. While I wish I could have known Him all the years I was growing up, I now realize through all the Bible and also what Max Lucado has written, God and His Son Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit have been with me all the years prior to becoming saved and will be for all eternity! Max has helped much with this understanding. My son also has Max Lucado on His phone.Barbara F.

Reviews:
This is a very good book, which I enjoyed immensely. Be Joyful is a 50 day devotional about joy from the writing of Paul the apostle. Even with being a Christian for many years, I still learned some things here. The devotionals are not very long, which makes this an easy read, but I still would recommend reading only one a day. If you want a nice devotional that doesn't take a long time to read and doesn't go through the entire year, Be Joyful is for you. Disclaimer: I received a complimentary copy of the ebook version of this book from NetGalley for my honest review. Be Joyful became available for sale May 10, 2022.cristi6

Review written for 'Need to Know': I was looking for a book to share with others new to their faith in Christ. This book drew me in right away, not just for others but for myself. It is thorough, concise, clear, true to the gospel, and engaging. I would recommend this book for anyone, old or new to the Christian faith, as well as those exploring. It always left me wanting to read more. 6 short chapters, recommended resources, and mentoring questions make this an accessible and helpful tool for use in groups or one-to-one discipleship.Marcia R
