Reviews:
This is a wonderful book for anyone who suffered childhood abuse. It makes you realize that the abuse was not your fault and that there is nothing wrong with you…..you are a survivor. You do not have to feel guilty or ashamed because of how your parents treated you…….you did nothing wrong, but were forced to live the unthinkable and sadly, you were robbed of a normal childhood. This book takes the blame and puts it where it belongs….not on your shoulders anymore, but on the shoulders of the abusers. It will help you heal and you will discover that you are not alone….and that there are others who went through similar abuse. You may have felt like you were different all of your life and could not relate to anyone….holidays bring pain and dread…..friendships are hard to make and or keep because of trust issues….always thinking that bad things were around the corner or that you don't deserve happiness for some reason. These thoughts can be unlearned and the only reason you have them is because you went through hell as a child and you did not know what it was like to live a happy and normal, safe childhood. I believe in my heart that God has something special in store for every childhood abuse survivor. Just believe in yourself no matter what. Learn to love yourself despite being told or treated otherwise. Realize that the sick past that you were forced to live through was NOT YOUR FAULT! Allow yourself to grieve once you discover that most people did not have to endure such abuse as a helpless, trusting child. Turn your suffering into something worthwhile….help others with an understanding heart, love with purity and goodness, make the time that you have now meaningful, joyful and special to make up for all of those years of which you had no control. Trust God to make sense of it all someday and that he will elevate you above your pain unto great and wonderful things….but most of all…….learn to LOVE YOURSELF…because you are God's best and you deserve all good things, always…..J.L.the_diamond_doll_shop
I bought this book the year it came out. I have suggested it to so many people. Everyone knows someone that was a victim, is a victim, or is the struggling parent. I was a Day Care worker and wanted to recognize children with toxic parents. I suggest to others that when you read it, you need to keep in mind, the parents, the grandparents, yourself if it is for you, the children and their children. All generations have to be forgiven to start the healing. Without forgiveness, the healing will not complete. It doesn't mean you set yourself up for more punishment, It means, simply, learn to let go of anger and revenge as well as hurt and begin to heal. Generation after generation can only heal when one person decides to end the pain and start a new way of raising children and being a better parent. This book can give anyone that reads it direction to do just that as well as direction to guide others through the steps of healing.wlgreene
It fantastic book. Suddenly all make sense and helped and guide me to be better me. Things that You knew but you did not how to acmoledge or understand. It all written there. When some one who can put a words to the unknown. Unknown is no longer the monster that I fear but a problem you can face and put a strategy to move forward. Thanks 2 years on I am better me and with outcome I never thought to have.Atomu

3. Cribsheet: A Data-Driven Guide To Better, More Relaxed Parenting, From Birth To Preschool [Book]
Product Details:
From the author of expecting better and the family firm, an economist's guide to the early years of parenting.“ both refreshing and useful. by digging into the data, oster found that much of the conventional pregnancy wisdom was wrong. in cribsheet, she now tackles an even greater challenge: decision-making in the early years of parenting. from the earliest days, parents get the message that they must make certain choices around feeding, sleep, and schedule or all will be lost. there's a rule—or three—for everything. but the benefits of these choices can be overstated, and the trade-offs can be profound. how do you make your own best decision? armed with the data, oster finds that the conventional wisdom doesn't always hold up. she debunks myths around breastfeeding (not a panacea), sleep training (not so bad!), potty training (wait until they're ready or possibly bribe with m&ms), language acquisition (early talkers aren't necessarily geniuses), and many other topics. she also shows parents how to think through freighted questions like if and how to go back to work, how to think about toddler discipline, and how to have a relationship and parent at the same time. economics is the science of decision-making, and cribsheet is a thinking parent's guide to the chaos and frequent misinformation of the early years. emily oster is a trained expert—and mom of two—who can empower us to make better, less fraught decisions—and stay sane in the years before preschool.
Reviews:
Having also read Emily Oster's previous book on pregnancy, Expecting Better, I was keen to read her data-driven follow up on child rearing. Oster does a great job of quickly and succinctly presenting relevant data (or pointing out a lack there of) for topics such as breastfeeding, stay-at-home parents, and reaching milestones. This book won't tell you how to raise your child, but it will provide evidence to help you make more informed decisions.Sally
Loved both her books – easy-to-read no-nonsense style and great data. I do wish Id read this BEFORE having our baby.rebeccab519

Simplicity Parenting helps parents to understand and clarify what's going on around our kids that every parent can relate to when described so well. Children are under seige from marketing of toys and products that have ridiculous claims for our children. This book helps to understand the world we live in where every company is out for themselves and compete for this huge market they have found with children. Easy reading, written very well, lots of ideas for parents.pumperhighpressure
I always *want* to be the reading type, but I truthfully never have/ make time to actually sit down and read. The reality of me ever finishing a book is pretty much zero. However, this book is SO important, and so full of very helpful and easily doable things that make a WORLD of a difference in our home and for our kids. I want to give it to every parent I know. I want to send copies to my friends who don't even have kids yet so they can learn these things before they are trying to "fix" these things. I'm obsessed with this book. I could write a book on how much I love this book. This is a super simple and straight forward read. No complicated literary BS or technical jargon. Buy this book and really read it. It's not just filled knowledge, it's a detailed step- by- step guide to making everyone's life in your house so much less stressful and more enjoyable. Seriously. Read it, with a highlighter in hand, because you'll want to use so much in this this book, reflect and meditate on it. It's so simple and easy. Thank me later.Kayleigh k.
Brilliant book, borrowed it from the library, just had to have get my very own copy. After 30 years of parenting, I cant recommend this book highly enough, it is honestly the best book on how to raise children. It will make you mindful about many everyday things in our lives, television, marketing aimed at children, children needing to remain children, excessive toys, extra curriculum. This is truly a parents bible.
9. The Gift Of Failure: How The Best Parents Learn To Let Go So Their Children Can Succeed [Book]
Product Details:
New york times bestsellerin the tradition of paul tough’s how children succeed and wendy mogel’s the blessing of a skinned knee, this groundbreaking manifesto focuses on the critical school years when parents must learn to allow their children to experience the disappointment and frustration that occur from life’s inevitable problems so that they can grow up to be successful, resilient, and self-reliant adults.modern parenting is defined by an unprecedented level of overprotectiveness: parents who rush to school at the whim of a phone call to deliver forgotten assignments, who challenge teachers on report card disappointments, mastermind children’s friendships, and interfere on the playing field. as teacher and writer jessica lahey explains, even though these parents see themselves as being highly responsive to their children’s well being, they aren’t giving them the chance to experience failure—or the opportunity to learn to solve their own problems.overparenting has the potential to ruin a child’s confidence and undermine their education, lahey reminds us. teachers don’t just teach reading, writing, and arithmetic. they teach responsibility, organization, manners, restraint, and foresight—important life skills children carry with them long after they leave the classroom.providing a path toward solutions, lahey lays out a blueprint with targeted advice for handling homework, report cards, social dynamics, and sports. most importantly, she sets forth a plan to help parents learn to step back and embrace their children’s failures. hard-hitting yet warm and wise, the gift of failure is essential reading for parents, educators, and psychologists nationwide who want to help children succeed.

It was very hard to put into words, just exactly how I've been feeling since the loss of my mother. This books hits the nail on the head. Not only does it label what I've been feeling, it guides me on how to work through it. I recommend this book to any adult who may have lost a parent! Blessings.memawtofive
Thought provoking, but not very helpful. Had a few fresh ideas about the stages of grief. I did like the format the author used, it was easy to follow and then pick up later. I would recommend it as a resource, but I imagine there are other titles available that would be better in different situations.jenrose85

14. Hunt, Gather, Parent: What Ancient Cultures Can Teach Us About The Lost Art Of Raising Happy, Helpful Little Humans [Book]
Product Details:
New york times bestseller the oldest cultures in the world have mastered the art of raising happy, well-adjusted children. “hunt, gather, parent is full of smart ideas that i immediately wanted to force on my own kids.” —pamela druckerman, the new york times book review when dr. michaeleen doucleff becomes a mother, she examines the studies behind modern parenting guidance and finds the evidence frustratingly limited and often ineffective. curious to learn about more effective parenting approaches, she visits a maya village in the yucatán peninsula. what else, doucleff wonders, are western parents missing out on? in hunt, gather, parent, doucleff sets out with her three-year-old daughter in tow to learn and practice parenting strategies from families in three of the world’s most venerable communities: maya families in mexico, inuit families above the arctic circle, and hadzabe families in tanzania. she sees that these cultures don’t have the same problems with children that western parents do. most strikingly, parents build a relationship with young children that is vastly different from the one many western parents develop—it’s built on cooperation instead of control, trust instead of fear, and personalized needs instead of standardized development milestones. maya parents are masters at raising cooperative children. without resorting to bribes, threats, or chore charts, maya parents rear loyal helpers by including kids in household tasks from the time they can walk. inuit parents have developed a remarkably effective approach for teaching children emotional intelligence. when kids cry, hit, or act out, inuit parents respond with a calm, gentle demeanor that teaches children how to settle themselves down and think before acting. hadzabe parents are experts on raising confident, self-driven kids with a simple tool that protects children from stress and anxiety, so common now among american kids. not only does doucleff live with families and observe their methods firsthand, she also applies them with her own daughter, with striking results. she learns to discipline without yelling. she talks to psychologists, neuroscientists, anthropologists, and sociologists and explains how these strategies can impact children’s mental health and development.

This book is fantastic for parents with children of all ages.Ilse
This is a really interesting book on how many other cultures parent and how that affects the family as a whole, and encourages kids (and adults) to cooperate, develop emotional intelligence, and confidence. There is also a great piece of research on many of the outdated sleep/feed 'routines' that are touted by many people in the Western world.Cat
It's a really rather brilliant book. Hugely inspired. I have a 9 year old and a 9 month old. It's influenced my parenting positively and practically.m_uk264
