1. The New Phd: How To Build A Better Graduate Education [Book]

Product Details:
This book examines the failed graduate school reforms of the past and presents a plan for a practical and sustainable phd.for too many students, today's phd is a bridge to nowhere. imagine an entering cohort of eight doctoral students. by current statistics, four of the eight—50%!—will not complete the degree. of the other four, two will never secure full-time academic positions. the remaining pair will find full-time teaching jobs, likely at teaching-intensive institutions. and maybe, just maybe, one of them will garner a position at a research university like the one where those eight students began graduate school. but all eight members of that original group will be trained according to the needs of that single one of them who might snag a job at a research university. graduate school has been preparing students for jobs that don't exist—and preparing them to want those jobs above all others. in the new phd, leonard cassuto and robert weisbuch argue that universities need to ready graduate students for the jobs they will get, not just the academic ones. connecting scholarly training to the vast array of career options open to graduates requires a phd that looks outside the walls of the university, not one that turns inward—a phd that doesn't narrow student minds but unlocks and broadens them practically as well as intellectually. cassuto and weisbuch document the growing movement for a student-centered, career-diverse graduate education, and they highlight some of the most promising innovations that are taking place on campuses right now. a more humane and socially dynamic phd experience, the authors assert, is possible. this new phd reconceives of graduate education as a public good, not a hermetically sealed cloister—and it won't happen by itself. throughout the book, cassuto and weisbuch offer specific examples of how graduate programs can work to: – reduce the time it takes students to earn a degree; – expand career opportunities after graduation; – encourage public scholarship; – create coherent curricula and rethink the dissertation; – attract a truly representative student cohort; and – provide the resources—financial, cultural, and emotional—that students need to successfully complete the program.the new phd is a toolbox for practical change that will teach readers how to achieve consensus on goals, garner support, and turn talk to action. speaking to all stakeholders in graduate education—faculty, administrators, and students—it promises that graduates can become change agents throughout our world.

Reviews:
I LOVE the Graduate Survival Guide. There are two little issues I'd recommend considering. 1. UNRELATED TO THE BOOK. Mine took over two weeks to receive. I had to postpone our graduation drive through party and then do it without the books. Disappointed to say the least. Especially because I called for a week without responses until I had already delivered the books. Doesn't affect the book, or how much I love Ramsey resources, just disappointed. 2. Many of my high school graduates will not go to college but they need something in their hands. I believe the book could be more general about approaching adult hood and not getting in a tough financial predicament. Being a wise steward with your money. Love the book though. I buy it for our seniors every year. Just wish it also applied to kids not doing college. I got tons of students who will do better having not went to college. Thanks! 🙂Mark S.
Anthony ONeal’s book is an excellent source of material for young people to learn how to avoid money mistakes in college. IMO, this book will provide young people the right guidance and direction to handling money wisely, making wise decisions and take control of their life. College students are hungry to learn about how to avoid the 5 mistakes explained in this book. Applying the material in this book to their lives provides college students with the financial principles to build a solid foundation to win with money and to give them hope to succeed in life.David L.
It is easy to read, review and refer back to. As a parent, I read the book first to acquire all the fine details, so I can continue to discuss all the recommendations and procedures with my teenage sons for their future financial success. My oldest teenage son is now reading this book.Scott M.

Social scientist brené brown, phd, msw, has sparked a global conversation about the experiences that bring meaning to our lives—experiences of courage, vulnerability, love, belonging, shame, and empathy. in braving the wilderness, brown redefines what it means to truly belong in an age of increased polarization. with her trademark mix of research, storytelling, and honesty, brown will again change the cultural conversation while mapping a clear path to true belonging. but in a culture that’s rife with perfectionism and pleasing, and with the erosion of civility, it’s easy to stay quiet, hide in our ideological bunkers, or fit in rather than show up as our true selves and brave the wilderness of uncertainty and criticism. and that path cuts right through the wilderness. brown writes, “the wilderness is an untamed, unpredictable place of solitude and searching. it is a place as dangerous as it is breathtaking, a place as sought after as it is feared. but it turns out to be the place of true belonging, and it’s the bravest and most sacred place you will ever stand.”

Reviews:
This was an excellent book for general graduate school advice, but is a little strongly biased towards the sciences (the author's seeming contempt for the liberal arts peeks through in a couple places). When I went to my professors about some of the recommendations in the book–particularly contacting potential professors before applying–they told me not to worry about it, that I might actually hurt myself if I didn't have a very good reason to contact them. The book is very grim about the prospects both entering and leaving graduate school, but it's good to know the worst of it before heading in. It is slightly out of date (talking about word processors and college websites as though they are rare), but it's definitely worth the money to know what you're getting yourself into.digitalclassicist

Reviews:
Wonderful and very informative book! I highly recommed for everyone to read! I love how every chapter is broken down and easy to relate to. I purchased this book to understand why certain individuals have very little to no compassion/empathy for one another. I love the quote by Albert Einstein in the begining of the book. I believe we all need more understanding and compassion and this would change the world!shopp-a-holic
A bit too sophisticated for my taste.
Fantastic for those working with people who have suffered childhood trauma; and for anyone treating traumaBeth Cat
