1. The City We Became [Book]

Reviews:
New York under attack from infectious invader. 5 avitars come to the rescue. A fabulous ride through an urban fantasy.shirley the reader
Let me start off by saying I have loved all of NK Jemisins work, but this one has fallen so flat from what I expect from her. She usually has a way of writing and weaving a story, with strong characters, racial issues, and social issues that just blow my mind. It's heart stopping and emotion building. I didn't feel any of this this time around and that makes me extremely sad.. This story fell beyond flat for me. I really didn't connect with any of the characters. It was confusing. And the ambiance just felt off the whole way through. The writing felt very child like and immature. Nothing of what I expected of an author of this caliber. I have noticed, reading other reviews, that people who truly loved it hadn't really dived into her other works. I recommend reading this one before her other works. I much prefer the nuances and story telling of her other works. Her writing in this one seems like she digressed. I really wanted to love this one. She's one of my favorite authors and I'm just beyond disappointed. I did enjoy her take on the city. And the magical undercurrent aspects of the story. I may try again at a later date but for now, definitely disappointed in one of my most anticipated reads of 2021Khalessi

Product Details:
“this is a perfect pick for kids who love rick riordan’s many series, particularly for those eager for mythologies beyond greek and roman stories.” —booklist (starred review) “a winner for all kids, but it will be especially beloved by latinx and hispanic families.” —kirkus reviews (starred review) the lightning thief meets the story thieves series in this middle grade fantasy inspired by hispanic folklore, legends, and myths from the iberian peninsula and central and south america.charlie hernández has always been proud of his latin american heritage. he loves the culture, the art, and especially the myths. thanks to his abuela’s stories, charlie possesses an almost encyclopedic knowledge of the monsters and ghouls who have spent the last five hundred years haunting the imaginations of children all across the iberian peninsula, as well as central and south america. and even though his grandmother sometimes hinted that the tales might be more than mere myth, charlie’s always been a pragmatist. even barely out of diapers, he knew the stories were just make-believe—nothing more than intricately woven fables meant to keep little kids from misbehaving. but when charlie begins to experience freaky bodily manifestations—ones all too similar to those described by his grandma in his favorite legend—he is suddenly swept up in a world where the mythical beings he’s spent his entire life hearing about seem to be walking straight out of the pages of hispanic folklore and into his life. and even stranger, they seem to know more about him than he knows about himself. soon, charlie finds himself in the middle of an ancient battle between la liga, a secret society of legendary mythological beings sworn to protect the land of the living, and la mano negra (a.k.a. the black hand), a cabal of evil spirits determined to rule mankind. with only the help of his lifelong crush, violet rey, and his grandmother’s stories to guide him, charlie must navigate a world where monsters and brujas rule and things he couldn’t possibly imagine go bump in the night. that is, if he has any hope of discovering what’s happening to him and saving his missing parents (oh, and maybe even the world). no pressure, muchacho.

Reviews:
So everyone in my household is beyond the demographic for this book, but we loved the movie so I was curious to see how the source material fared. Honestly, I think the movie treated the material better. The book was fun, and it was nice to see the thought of "turning good" being the bad guy's instead of some other character, but overall the way the events were portrayed in the book simply weren't as entertaining as the film. I wasn't too keen on the art style, either.Eric
My 8 yo is not a bad reader but not keen on heavy reading. These books are mostly pictures. There's very little text at all on each page. For instance, one page may have a picture with the word "Boom" in large letters all over it. But it's very engaging and fun with the result that she might read 3 books in an evening. So get them all.Nil

Really, this book is just fantastic. It may be a little boring at the start, but it is really interesting and exciting. I was actually amazed by how breathtaking it was. I would definitely recommend this for people who like adventure, excitement and mystery. This book is up in one of the best books I've ever read. This book is the GOAT of all books.Budah
Originally reviewed on Just Me My Books. The book follows Percy, who ends up vaporising his maths teacher on a trip to a New York museum, and no one seems to notice. When he is expelled from yet another boarding school, his mother treats him to a weekend at the beach, even though it looks like a hurricane is about to descend on them. It's only on the arrival of Percy's friend Grover do they realise something is wrong and that a Minotaur is after Percy. Soon, Percy arrives at Camp Half-Blood and learns that he is a Demigod – half human, half god. After being recognised by his father, one of the three gods who vowed they would not have any more children, Percy finds out he is being blamed for stealing Zeus' master lightning bolt, and so is sent on a quest to retrieve it from the Underworld before the Summer Solstice, in order to prevent war on Mount Olympus. With the help of his Satyr Grove and fellow camper Annabeth, they discover that the gods have more to worry about than Percy being the son of a powerful god, and that Kronos maybe trying to make a comeback.victoria.k
My Appraisal of the book Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief Written by Rick Riordan If you were wondering about this book and can't decide if you want to read it, I read it and maybe this will help you decide. This book tells the first story of the Percy Jackson Series. The story is mainly based on Greek mythology but with a modern twist. Read about the marvelous first adventure of main character Percy Jackson (a teen from Manhattan) and his friends as they fight monsters and try to keep peace between the Olympian gods. This story is full of action and adventure and will keep readers wanting more. This story won't let you down, except that there is more in the series, and you haven't read it all. yet. I highly recommend this book. Opinion of the Tome GuyThe Tome Guy

I bought this series for my son around 2.5 yrs ago. We are planning to move in a few months so I asked him if there were any books on his bookshelf we could let go of. He responded by letting me know that this set of books was one of his all time favorites and letting go of it was not an option. I was pleased to hear that he still enjoys the set.Crissy
My children and I are doing The Mysterious Benedict Society by Trenton Lee Stewart as a read-aloud this summer. I loved it on so many levels. It's a fun mystery, encouraging the reader to solve the puzzles and riddles along with the characters. It recognizes the many different ways a child can be "gifted" and how all of these are valuable to the team. It promotes family, co-operation, honesty, overcoming adversity, fighting temptation, strengthening our wills to do the right thing, and it points out the dangers of blindly accepting messages of the mass media. Published in 2007, I believe this book deserves to take its place among the classics of children's literature.lovetolearn8

I read this book as a child and loved it! Some of the passages are still very clear in my mind decades later. This is a fictional account of a boy who runs away from home to live alone in the woods. But the depth of story and the detailed account of his various survival techniques have made many question whether the story was true. Now that I have children of my own, I had to buy the book for them. Its a great book and I highly recommend it!butterrum

Reviews:
Shannon Messenger did it again. I love her books and her characters and am always excited to read about Sophie. (We are already closer to Book 5!) Things that are amazing: 1) There was more world building. I love world building and learning about any new gadgets or places or powers. 2) We learned about completely new characters but we also learned more about some side characters. 3) We learned more about people's secret identities. And I can happily say I figured out the ones revealed. There are so many more good things I don't have time to mention them. The only negative things I can say about Neverseen are: 1) Neverseen read a little slower than the first three books. The story was dragging. While I love these books, I hope that Book 5 is the last one to make for a cleaner series. But I'd buy and love any books after that anyway. 2) Every situation when Sophie might tell someone her feelings about liking someone she was interrupted. Same for the guys. Really? I know Shannon Messenger always says she isn't the one who's going to decide and it's Sophie, but how can you expect someone to figure out all their feelings if they never talk about them with anybody? She doesn't even talk about them with Iggy. Why is she waiting for the last book for this decision? Everyone loves to watch a couple's relationship after they are together. 3) I think the way some of the characters acted was unrealistic at times. The main situation I can think of is when Della showed off to Mr. Forkle at their first meeting. It felt so un-Della. But over all the book was well written and really enjoyable. Five stars.SarawithouttheH
My daughters absolutely love this series! Received it on time.4285connie1
