This is the classic how-to-think-about story for would-be screenwriters. It's worth every bead of sweat to read it for it contains the simplified analysis of much wisdom in these pages. In recent years there are more books in this how-to arena, but one should not discount Field's gem. Moreover, many of the story works tend to use mumbo-jumbo to describe the unconscious role of symbolism in stories, that's useful to some masters & neophytes, but much of the jargon is jarring & pretentious to the creative person, better left for the purely analytical schools; or crossover individuals. This book is just the opposite. It works best if you haven't a clue as to what you are doing, or why, and you need to find out where NOT to step, what NOT to do, how NOT to proceed– and the more you know, the more obvious the message, the less useful the book. This is a great book that tells you everything you need to know about the conventions and mechanics of screenwriting. Sure, a lot of advice can be found on the internet, but it's sometimes less than reliable, whereas with this book, you pretty much can't go wrong. Is this edition different/new enough to be worth purchasing if you've already got the older edition? Well, yes, if you can afford it. It does contain a lot of new stuff, especially in the marketing chapters, and there's new content in the writing workbook section, too. I would say invest in this new edition if you possibly can. An excellent reference for those new to screenwriting, as well as for those more experienced.Erica

With over 25 years of scriptwriting experience in Hollywood writing for TV features and moderate budget feature films for the big guys I'm impressed at the simplicity yet wisdom of this book and it's author Josh Clark out of USC's School of Cinema -Television. His book only contains 3 chapters: one on story one on format and one business. There's a no nonsense approach some bitterness great storytelling about the author's own experiences and enough technical advise and conventions of professional screenwriting rules to get a script writer or student well on their way to securing an agent a contest win or at the least a head start compared with the hundreds of thousands of spec scripts floating around the market. The book manages with much wit and an obvious expertise in filmic writing to display the importance of story and character plot and subplot using less dialog compared to more classical 3 act structure scenes sequences beats action format pacing and thousands of tiny tricks and tips the beginning screenwriter will be able to save years or decades by trial and error.
