Reviews:
This is a great book that tells you everything you need to know about the conventions and mechanics of screenwriting. Sure, a lot of advice can be found on the internet, but it's sometimes less than reliable, whereas with this book, you pretty much can't go wrong. Is this edition different/new enough to be worth purchasing if you've already got the older edition? Well, yes, if you can afford it. It does contain a lot of new stuff, especially in the marketing chapters, and there's new content in the writing workbook section, too. I would say invest in this new edition if you possibly can. An excellent reference for those new to screenwriting, as well as for those more experienced.Erica
So much good pointers. So rich in how to write a story.joseg2019

This Book is like a Bible for established and new screenwriters. I Would recommend it?stephenb974
Each stage is clearly explained in a very simple way. Making it all seem possible….helenbbn8
This is the classic how-to-think-about story for would-be screenwriters. It's worth every bead of sweat to read it for it contains the simplified analysis of much wisdom in these pages. In recent years there are more books in this how-to arena, but one should not discount Field's gem. Moreover, many of the story works tend to use mumbo-jumbo to describe the unconscious role of symbolism in stories, that's useful to some masters & neophytes, but much of the jargon is jarring & pretentious to the creative person, better left for the purely analytical schools; or crossover individuals. Fields books strike the balance. No better place to start.eggladyonwheels

Product Details:
In a world awash in screenwriting books, the science of screenwriting provides an alternative approach that will help the aspiring screenwriter navigate this mass of often contradictory advice: exploring the science behind storytelling strategies. paul gulino, author of the best-selling screenwriting: the sequence approach, and connie shears, a noted cognitive psychologist, build, chapter-by-chapter, an understanding of the human perceptual/cognitive processes, from the functions of our eyes and ears bringing real world information into our brains, to the intricate networks within our brains connecting our decisions and emotions. they draw on a variety of examples from film and television — the social network, silver linings playbook and breaking bad — to show how the human perceptual process is reflected in the storytelling strategies of these filmmakers. they conclude with a detailed analysis of one of the most successful and influential films of all time, star wars, to discover just how it had the effect that it had.

7. Screenwriting: The Sequence Approach [Book]
Product Details:
The great challenge in writing a feature-length screenplay is sustaining audience involvement from page one through 120. screenwriting: the sequence approach expounds on an often-overlooked tool that can be key in solving this problem. a screenplay can be understood as being built of sequences of about fifteen pages each, and by focusing on solving the dramatic aspects of each of these sequences in detail, a writer can more easily conquer the challenges posed by the script as a whole. the sequence approach has its foundation in early hollywood cinema (until the 1950s, most screenplays were formatted with sequences explicitly identified), and has been rediscovered and used effectively at such film schools as the university of southern california, columbia university and chapman university.

Paul is a fine writer and his ideas about sequences in screenwriting (and in movies) are worth deep assimilation by any aspiring writer (or director, for that matter).625shamrock

Love this book! The teaching style is unconventional and entertaining, yet I learned soooo much from Snyder's instruction and insight. It's also a great gift for a fellow writer!arundel05
An excellent first step on your road to writing for the screen. In "Save the Cat" Snyder teaches you all you need to know about the 'science' of writing a script. He looks into the basic types of stories there are out there (and there's less than you'd expect) and gives you a clear and easy to understand runthrough on how to structure your script. In addition to providing valuable insights into what makes a screenplay a screenplay, Snyder gives us an insight into why some scripts work and others don't. Reviews:
Great Encouragement for screenwriters, budding young writers and discerning movie-viewers.arundel05
This is an excellent book. It is also complete. A great guide for the beginner and seasoned scriptwriter. There is something in common in almost all great movies: Structure, structure, structure. But it should be taken with a grain of salt. When Hollywood follows the Save the Cat system to the letter the movies they produce are often so predictable. There is a web site that offers templates and other aids that can be useful to young writers. So many scripts that went straight to trash could have a better fate if the scriptwriter had read "Save the Cat!"zafiris2007
if you want a screen writing book that covers loglines than this is it. It obviously has more to it than that, but the logline templates are fantastic.Robin

This book is primarily practical theory of screen writing. I have not been able to put the book down since I received it. I suggest it be remarketed and reprinted. It encourages, but is also very down-to-earth about the fact that there are only the rare few who do see their screen plays make it to the movie-going audience and the majority of screenwriters working regularly are barely in the mid-range of U.S. incomes. In other words, writing movie scripts is tough and not a "get-rich-quick" form of income. Read this book if you enjoy writing screen scripts, but need some quick inspiration and solid direction. I bought it for my husband who turns 89 in April and is writing his first screen play (with George Clooney in mind for the lead role). It's going to be a hum-dinger.treehousecafe51

Reviews:
I wish I had been lucky enough to have had a professor like Lew Hunter. I have three degrees and this guy taught me more in a few hours with just a book than most of the dozens of in-class teachers I've had. His approach is simple, straightforward, no nonsense. His writing style must approach his teaching style which is easy, uncomplicated and welcoming. If, like me, you're a writer, you owe it to yourself to read this book.timothycampbell
