1. All The Single Ladies: A Novel [Book]
Product Details:
In this fast-paced and evocative novel, beloved new york times bestselling author dorothea benton frank again takes us deep into the lowcountry of south carolina, where three unsuspecting women are brought together by tragedy and mysterylisa st. clair knows a thing or two about weathering storms. a dedicated nurse with a healthy sense of humor, she single-handedly raised her truculent daughter, marianne, after her ex walked out on them twenty-four years ago, sending them a lottery ticket once a year as support. one day he reappeared and lured their daughter into a dubious but lucrative venture in colorado. now mother and daughter aren’t speaking.so when kathy harper, lisa’s favorite patient, loses her battle with cancer, lisa finds herself drawing closer to carrie and suzanne, the devoted friends who were always by kathy’s side. as these three women’s lives inevitably connect, they share their concerns about men, getting older, and the horrors of maintaining financial stability. suzanne’s ninety-nine-year-old grandmother, a former chanteuse, offers unexpected perspectives on the mores of the day. carrie’s greedy ex-stepchildren are a chorus of cackling crows. and lisa’s mother just can’t help herself as she henpecks her to distraction.somehow their conversations always return to the enigma of kathy. who was she? what did her short life mean? as lisa, carrie, and suzanne power walk the beaches of the isle of palms, they gradually uncover the truth of kathy’s life and unfurl plans to secure their own futures, as fate steps in to help them discover that being single doesn’t have to mean being alone.
Reviews:
Since I have read all of Dorothea's previous books, I couldn't wait to get this one. I LOVE all of her books, except this one. I must say that I'm struggling to get through it. For the 50 year oldish character, it's written like she's 14. A lot of it seems silly and it's just very difficult to keep reading. I'm struggling to get to the end of it. Would not waste your money on it; there are much better books.twiceananna
Easy reading and entertaining. Any woman who has a group of girlfriends, no matter what age you are, would enjoy this story.stone7646

2. All The Single Ladies: Unmarried Women And The Rise Of An Independent Nation [Book]
Product Details:
* new york times notable books of 2016 selection * best books of 2016 selection by the boston globe * entertainment weekly * npr * chicago public library * the new york times bestselling investigation into the sexual, economic, and emotional lives of women is “an informative and thought-provoking book for anyone—not just the single ladies—who want to gain a greater understanding of this pivotal moment in the history of the united states” (the new york times book review). in 2009, award-winning journalist rebecca traister started all the single ladies about the twenty-first century phenomenon of the american single woman. it was the year the proportion of american women who were married dropped below fifty percent; and the median age of first marriages, which had remained between twenty and twenty-two years old for nearly a century (1890–1980), had risen dramatically to twenty-seven. but over the course of her vast research and more than a hundred interviews with academics and social scientists and prominent single women, traister discovered a startling truth: the phenomenon of the single woman in america is not a new one. and historically, when women were given options beyond early heterosexual marriage, the results were massive social change—temperance, abolition, secondary education, and more. today, only twenty percent of americans are married by age twenty-nine, compared to nearly sixty percent in 1960.
Reviews:
An inspiring piece for ladies in need of perspective on their personal position. Bulging at the seams with academic references (& otherwise), a worthwhile investment of time in a society of changing norms.R C.
Traister at her best. A must for all ladies, single or not. And the men who want to understand them.Florida
This book is stocked full of important information about society, government, economics, medicine, history, etc. All women should read it. Men probably won't be as interested in the subject matter, but I highly recommend it to them also.Toni FGMAMTC
3. Live Alone And Like It: The Classic Guide For The Single Woman [Book]
Product Details:
"whether you view your one-woman ménage as doom or adventure, you need a plan, if you are going to make the best of it." thus begins marjorie hillis' archly funny, gently prescriptive manifesto for single women. though it was 1936 when the vogue editor first shared her wisdom with her fellow singletons, the tome has been passed lovingly through the generations, and is even more apt today than when it was first published. hillis, a true bon vivant, was sick and tired of hearing single women carping about their living arrangements and lonely lives; this book is her invaluable wake-up call for single women to take control and enjoy their circumstances. hillis takes readers through the fundamentals of living alone, including the importance of creating a hospitable environment at home, cultivating hobbies that keep her there ("for no woman can accept an invitation every night without coming to grief"), the question of whether single ladies may entertain men at home (the answer may surprise you!), and many more.with engaging chapter titles like "a lady and her liquor" and "the pleasures of a single bed," along with a new preface by author laurie graff (you have to kiss a lot of frogs), live alone and like it is sure to appeal to live-aloners and many other readers alike.
Reviews:
My favorite book since I was in my 20's. So glad they reprinted it. I always give it to women friends whose live are in transitions. Lots of wisdom here.minerva
Adorable advice from 1936. A great gift too.greatstuff_24_7
Regretfully, I realised once I'd received this book that I had read it before. I don't know whether the description was at fault or my understanding of it. This is a book written in the 1930's by an American lady and only relevant as American social history. Nothing in it has any significance to those coping with living alone in the 21st Century. Disappointing.J H.

Reviews:
Wow. This book made me laugh, cry, scream, and tear up with happiness all at once. That is so rare in a book, and Laurie Frankel captures it all in this book. It was so engaging, even when I didn't have time to read, I was thinking about the book. Incredibly written and so very important to have such a book for people to read. Loved every minute.Rach C
Nothing I say could do this novel justice: it is the first book I've read in years that I want to hand out on street corners and force all my friends and family and neighbors to read IMMEDIATELY. It is profound and hilarious and uplifting and thought-provoking and page-turning. I fell in love with the entire family: parents, five kids, and grandma. The writing made me laugh out loud and stay up late for just one more chapter. The story made me think about society and gender in a way I never had before, impressing upon me how absurdly preoccupied we are with what happens to be in other peoples' pants (or skirts). There are fairy tales and horror stories, parenting tips and transformations. Read it!!!!Becca
This book is so honest and real and deals with being different in today's society. It's so raw and definitely a book I couldn't put down. I would read it again. And again.Kadybug

Product Details:
The new york times bestseller, now available in paperback—“half memoir, half polemic, and entirely necessary,” (elle uk) caitlin moran’s debut—an instant runaway bestseller in the uk—puts a new face on feminism, cutting to the heart of issues with an irreverent, transcendent, and hilarious touch.“ caitlin moran is the profane, witty and wonky best friend i wish i had. i don’t want to be like her—i want to be her.” —peggy orenstein, author of cinderella ate my daughtercaitlin moran puts a new face on feminism, cutting to the heart of women’s issues today with her irreverent, transcendent, and hilarious how to be a woman. “half memoir, half polemic, and entirely necessary,” (elle uk), moran’s debut was an instant runaway bestseller in england as well as an amazon uk top ten book of the year; still riding high on bestseller lists months after publication, it is a bona fide cultural phenomenon. now poised to take american womanhood by storm, here is a book that vanity fair calls “the u.k. version of tina fey’s bossypants…. you will laugh out loud, wince, and—in my case—feel proud to be the same gender as the author.”
Reviews:
As an "older feminist", I found this book not only thought-provoking but also highly entertaining and readable. I immediately wanted my own daughter and son to read it because I think that the humour and readability would appeal to their generation. I also found it quite disheartening though, to think about how the current culture is shaping our young people's thinking about women. I thought we'd got well past some of this stuff long ago!Lucymags
Caitlin Morans journey of life, love, career, making sense of it all without giving away her feminist values.3113martin
This is a great big hoot of a book. There are lines in it that will make you snort with laughter, situations so true to life that you will howl in recognition. It is very, very funny. So, you could read it just for that, for the entertainment value. If you are female, and particularly if you are a female under 30, then, tucked around the jokes, Moran has provided you with a short, sharp, feminist manifesto. It's not academic: she doesn't present a research paper into gender differences in pay or interview women who have suffered domestic abuse. Instead, she uses her own life to examine the everyday niggles of everyday womanhood.Miranda

Reviews:
I love this book! I’m usually not a big fan of memoirs or non-fiction in general but her story was so engaging. You can tell right off the bat how intelligent and aware she is and she further proves this by her successes throughout her life. I’m so glad she wrote this book. It’s not boring at all and the writing is absolutely beautiful. I feel lucky to have read this book and it’s definitely going to be one of my top reads this year.Keke
I chose to listen to the book instead of reading it. I believe I got so much more out of it when listening to the author's voice. With her reading it, it gave me the tone that I would have thought she would wanted the readers to hear. It brought the book so much more alive to me. I have raved about this book to so many, some excited about the book and some not but willing to read it. Michelle made her life especially as the former First Lady raw and real. Doesn't matter what political side your on I highly recommend reading or listening ( very highly recommend) this book to get an insiders view on what it's like to be a strong woman who supports her husband in a ( I would say ) very stressful position. Striving to stay a wife, mother, and individual Michelle brings to the reader an amazing story of her journey thus far.Kacey
“For me, becoming isn’t about arriving somewhere or achieving a certain aim. I see it instead as forward motion, a means of evolving, a way to reach continuously toward a better self. The journey doesn’t end.” 4.5 stars. Sometimes I'll do this thing where I don't read/watch something because it's overhyped. I'm not sure what it is. I think it may be that I see it so much on my feed/dash/everywhere that I just … can't bring myself to approach it because I feel like it's in my face too much as it is. I wait for the hype to die down so I can make my own judgement or just … quietly approach it. That's what this book did. It quietly approached me and just … wow. I'll admit, I had no plans of picking this book up, seeing wildly mixed reviews and also just being overly-memoired at the moment. However, Ipicked up Obama's book and the best thing to come out of it is me wanting to read this book. Even in a memoir primarily focused on his presidency and decisions, Michelle Obama shines in that book. So I was curious. And I wasn't disappointed. Michelle Obama is an incredible woman. From the very start. Not when she became First Lady, not because she became First Lady, but just because of who she is. Reading about her life was absolutely fascinating. To learn about her life, starting from her early childhood in the South Side of Chicago all the way to where she is now is quite the journey and she masterfully tells the story where it all just flows so naturally (even if it didn't feel like it to her at the time). It's inspiring to see all the different routes, the what ifs, the doubts, the fear, the courage, all of it laid out for us. One thing's for certain, she's always been a badass, whether she's a hotshot lawyer Harvard Law graduate or First Lady. More than that, what was truly beautiful to read was her empathy, her strength of character, her constant love and wanting to do more for others and push people towards the opportunities she worked so hard for. There were quite a few moments that really got to me, because even on her constant journey to become, her kindness and care for others, whether it be family, women, the underprivileged is just … something else. And it's not all sunshine and success either. There's grief, there's sadness, there are difficulties and doubts, and there's life. I loved seeing (see: reading) all of it. I think, for me, the least interesting parts were the ones about her in the White House and that truly says something because part of me had thought it would have been the opposite. To see Michelle Obama truly becoming Michelle Obama is an experience. Her writing is beautiful yes but it's truly the story that kept me so entirely engaged. The words themselves are simple, straightforward. There's no prose, no fancying of words, and I appreciated it. It's accessible in a way one wouldn't necessarily expect and it speaks to you rather than reads to you, if that makes any sense. I listened to this as an audiobook and at no point did I feel as if I was. It kind of felt like one big speech, but better because there wasn't a moment I wanted to fast forward or skip through. I think I'd like to reread this at some point in its book form, just to really appreciate the words and her story that much more.sara.m

As an author and a coach who has been helping women for more than a decade, i noticed some women were in trouble. not just in their relationships, some had unfulfilling jobs, didn't get paid what they were worth, had always dreamt of starting their own business but never did, felt lonely even though they had a husband and kids… the list goes on and on. so many women try to be the perfect girlfriends, wives, mothers, friends, sisters, colleagues, business owners, bosses, and more. they love to serve and want to succeed in the many roles they have to play. they are compliant, even to the people who don't really deserve that kind of treatment. they give it all they have, every single day. regardless of their tremendous efforts, some women get little in return. they feel used. they get men that keep flaking out, careers that don't feel meaningful, and possibly a body that starts to feel and look more and more tired. did you ever notice that burnout tends to afflict women much more often than men? there's a reason for that, as you'll learn. this should stop. some women seem to have found a loophole, a backdoor in the current system. there are women out there who have designed the life they live. i call these women the high-value women. this value has nothing to do with money. it turns out the high-value woman follows a set of strategies and principles. i'll share them with you throughout this book. you might have seen and met her. she's the woman who is self-employed, doing the thing she loves, and making a living off of it. she's the woman who might have decided to have a normal career, with a twist. it's the type of career she enjoys and she is actually appreciated for the hard work and hours she puts into it. when she speaks, others listen, even the men in her office with over-inflated egos. her job almost never feels like work and is deeply fulfilling. it doesn't cost her energy; she gets energy from it. when she wakes up, she can't wait to get started with her day. she is the woman who has found and created herself a loving relationship with a man she loves. she is also the woman who is happily single, the woman who doesn't need a man to be happy. she has a supportive circle of great friends, and she has the time to hang out with them, even when she has kids. she knows how to set the world to her hand, so it seems, and some women wonder how she does it. that's what this book is about, i'll uncover her strategies. i've been studying and interviewing her for so long now that i can't wait to share everything with you. i'm sure you already are a high-value woman in many ways. some parts of the book will reaffirm that you're on the right track; others will provide a new way of thinking to take you to the next level. are you curious to find out how the high-value woman does it all? then hit the buy button at the top of this page and start your high value woman journey right away!

Reviews:
"Something In the Water" by Catherine Steadman is a tale of love, greed, betrayal, mystery and murder. All those things that make a great book! Erin is a documentarian and she has thought of a great idea… interviewing three inmates who are getting ready to be released soon. She will interview them inside prison, film their release and interview them after. During this process, Erin and Mark finally get married and take a dream honeymoon to Bora Bora. However, while deep sea diving, they find a mysterious bag that changes their lives forever… and not in a good way. Spoiler Alert! I loved this book. It had a great beginning and I was hooked from the first sentence. It kept me entertained and I have never pondered the difference between flotsam and jetsam so much. 😉 In the end, my only issue was that I was not 100% sure about the wreck and when Mark became involved. I think that he was tangled up in the mess from the beginning. He was an experienced diver and it was quite coincidental that they just happened upon the wreck, he found the bag, and he dove to the wreck alone. In the final chapter, Erin is pondering how everything happened and she recounted the huge blow up with Mark the night they slashed the wedding cost. I also thought it odd at the time that they cut the wedding expenses so much but still went to Bora Bora for two weeks. I think I know why; he was involved from the get go! Also, he had not seen Hector since before the wedding. He was busy planning something for all that time & his persona changed quite a bit. I think that deep down Erin knew that there was something "off" with Mark and that is why she chose not to tell him about the baby. I loved how all three of her interviewees became a part of her life, especially Eddie. I still wonder if Eddie might have been involved somehow in the whole mess or was he just somewhat of a father figure/helper t to Erin. He obviously liked her since he assisted her in the sale of the diamonds and the ensuing coveruTDdo
Lots of twists and turns about a couple who marries, goes on their honeymoon and discovers an unknown bag in the water. Once they get the bag open, the characters change in many unexpected ways. I enjoyed the journey of the entire book. Read it.NANCY
I found the book very boring and repetitive. I read constantly and enjoy a good thriller but I guessed how this would end and found the main characters unbelievable. I would rate this a 4 out of 10 for reading; I was very disappointed with the book.. I do not recommend.maryann4929
14. For Women Only: What You Need To Know About The Inner Lives Of Men [Book]

What's going on in a man's mind? from their early days, every woman has struggled to understand why males behave the way they do. even long-married women who think they understand men have only scratched the surface. beneath a man's rugged exterior is an even more rugged, unmapped terrain. what bestselling author shaunti feldhahn's research reveals about the inner lives of men will open women's eyes to what the men in their life–boyfriends, brothers, husbands, and sons–are "really "thinking and feeling. men want to be understood, but they're afraid to "freak out" the women they love by confessing what is happening inside their heads. this book will guide women in how to provide the loving support that modern men want and need. the truth about his inner life he desperately wants you to know what's going on in there? ever been totally confused by something your man has said or done? want to understand his secret desires and fears, his daily battles that you know nothing about? in a woman-to-woman conversation you'll never forget, shaunti feldhahn takes you beneath the surface into the inner lives of men. with findings from a groundbreaking national survey and personal interviews of over one thousand men, "for women only" is full of eye-opening revelations you need to not only understand the man in your life, but to support and love him in the way he needs to be loved. grounded in biblical hope, you will discover how to love your man for who he "really" is–not who you "think" he is. story behind the book i had no idea how clueless i was about men until i interviewed a bunch of them for my last novel. initially, i just wanted a little insight so i could write my main (male) character. but pretty soon i found myself astonished, over and over again blurting out, "that's what you're "thinking?" "so i did more interviews. after the novel hit shelves, dozens of women told me they also had been astonished by what i included. clearly i wasn't the only one who needed more insight on this! to lay the groundwork for this nonfiction book, i wrote out the half-dozen things from these interviews that had most surprised me–things that appeared to be universal to most men–that women desperately "needed "to know. i conducted a professional national survey of men to test my findings. yep–the survey substantiated every single one. these findings are fascinating–and they have already changed my life and marriage. i can't wait to share them!

This book is a game-changer for long term committed relationships. I found a source for most all of the arguments my husband and I have had over our 10 years of marriage in the first 3 chapters. I read a lot of it with my mouth hanging open. It just makes sense to me and I am grateful.whynot11
This book was suggested by our marriage counselor. Both my husband and I found it very sexist and chauvinist. I'm not holding him in awe and bowing down to kiss his feet nor does my husband expect me to.wiggygal83
I make this part of a standard wedding gift along with the counterpart written so men can understand women called For Men Only by Jeff Feldhahn. This explains all the stuff men want females to understand about them but either cannot say or don't understand about themselves so they obviously cannot explain it to others. (I'd say the vice versa about For Men Only as well.) It discusses how respect equates to how women need to feel love, how men very much need to provide financially for their ladies (even if their ladies also have good paying jobs), how men don't need their ladies to be supermodels or a size 6 but they do need their ladies to put effort into their appearance, and a few other very important issues ladies need to understand about men.jkh347

Hilarious, interesting and at times, oddly relatable, I found this book an incredibly fun read! It was such an eye-opener into the perspective of a woman with autism and her thought processes in relation to others. Her mindset was so pragmatic, and thoughts on others so logical, that at times, I couldn't help but think that perhaps most of us really are buffoons in the eyes of others! So so refreshing from your usual read and characters; I highly recommend it to anybody looking for a casual but absorbing book!Isabella
This was actually a great read. Im not an avid reader but this was great. Lots of short little chapters and a short read (~150-160 pages). I just bought another book by the same author. Hopefully its just as interesting and a good read.madisonhoang
This is a deceptively simple story that I find myself thinking about almost daily. A temptation of writing an autistic character is to romanticise the condition. The author skilfully avoids this. The character suffers from the expectation of the non-autistic around her – to marry, to get a 'better job' – and this is something everyone can relate to on some level, and the way she deals with these expectations is the soul of the book. Read it.Steve

The Girl on the Train was hyped up to such an extent that I really felt that I would be missing out on something if I didn't read it. It has been plastered over bookshop store fronts and has had it's own dedicated display areas which lead me to believe this was the next big thing. Sadly, I was mistaken. I started with the best intentions. I like to keep an open mind before totally discarding a book, which I feel I did with this book. But, I also feel one of the reasons I did finish it is because it's not really a long read. We meet the character Rachel. From the offset I got the impression that she was quite a lonely, sad character, however, as the plot goes on I got to learn not only is she sad and lonely but an alcoholic, love sick, overdramatic, non-sensical human being. Her character is annoying and foolish but honestly it doesnt stop there, as I soon learned there would be no love lost between me and any of the characters in this book. Rachel goes for a journey on the train everyday, passing by the house she used to live in with her cheating ex-husband Tom, who now lives there with his new wife and child, Anna and Evie. Although Rachel has no real reason to be travelling this route, she is quite obsessed with the fact that a new woman has taken her place in the house she was so happy in. The train tracks run alongside the gardens of this street of houses, giving Rachel a clear view of the goings on in each house. In her own mind she gets to know the neighbours, she creates names, identities and stories for them, all from her intense study of them from her seat on the train. One day whilst passing on the train, she witnesses something quite out of the ordinary in the neighbours house and soon learns a missing woman has been reported. We join Rachel on her unrealistic, detective mission to find out what really happened to the woman. There is no mystery as to what I thought of this book. It felt like a poor attempt to be in the same category as Gone Girl. There were very similar elements to this book, especially the writing style and diary entry layout but for me it just didn't work. I can appreciate a murder- mystery but this is not one I'll be recommending to friends. In a sentence: A very mild, boring version of Gone Girl. Rating: 2/5 Published: 2015maria.l
When this originally came out I rushed to Barnes Noble and picked it up right away- I was so excited to read it! But it sat on my bookshelf for hmmm over a year until finally I decided to read it. I don't know and also DO KNOW what I was waiting for! I lost a whole day plus a night of sleep reading this! WHOA. Rachel Watson, divorcee and alcoholic, rides the 8:04 train every morning into London and spies on the "perfect" couple whom she names Jess and Jason. Jess, beautiful blonde with a lithe body, and Jason the tall brooding protector- two strangers characterized out of a romance novel take up too much space in Rachel's mind. When Rachel sees something shocking from the train window her obsession reaches a peak moment and she immerses herself in the couple's lives. Jess has turned up missing and Rachel believes she may hold key information into finding her. As Rachel moves in on Jess and Jason's lives, she comes head to head with her past as well. Rachel is an utterly despicable character at times but deep down she truly is a good person. I identified with her probably more than I should have- thrust into her world of introversion and a little too much to drink, I couldn't "hate" her because I sympathized too much with her. I felt an emotional connection, especially during her darkest of pages. I felt her desperation, panic, loathing, and overall want to recognized- to be important. I thought this book was perfectly paced- enough was revealed bit by bit to keep the pages turning. There were major and startling plot twists but enough foreshadowing that I enjoyed trying to figure out the mystery myself. I found the ending sort of "meh"- how it all came together at once but I did not predict the "who dun it." (I really might think the worse of people). I have already borrowed this book out and am urging others to read it- its soooo good! Highly recommended! I cannot wait to see the movie adaption.regan.d
The first one third to half of the book is a little hard to get into, but inevitably I kept reading because the writer does a good job of drawing you into the mystery and making you too curious about the ending to stop reading. Initially it is a bit confusing if you’re not paying attention. The book is written in the first person perspective of three different characters; each chapter is labeled with the name of the character whose perspective you’re now reading, along with the date. I rated it highly because the actual mystery is intriguing and unpredictable. It will have you continuously guessing as it reveals further clues into the mystery. I knocked it down to 4/5 stars because none of the characters are likeable or particularly relatable. I found myself frequently frustrated and annoyed with the main female character, and the other two main female characters were extremely narcissistic and difficult to sympathize with. Overall, it’s an interesting, unique crime mystery and worth the read.afiyah.a
