Lovisa S
A great book for those who have issues with sleep. Some practical tips with easy to understand background knowledge on sleep. Intelligent writing coupled with humour throughout. Although though not the intent of the book, an allied health professional would find the book useful in understanding the difficulties of sleep, but assisting their patients with implementing strategies for a good nights rest. The Ex Phys

Have kids and want your evenings back for personal conversation and pursuits? Read this book. Need your sleep…and want your kids to sleep in their own bed, not yours? Read this book. Highly, highly recommend for any first-time parents and even seasoned parents whose kids are up late at night or sleeping irregularly or who are regularly in their parents' bed in the middle of the night. Best advice I learned from this book: sleep begets sleep. Learn all the principles of getting the best sleep out of your child, and getting the best sleep for yourself. My husband and I both found Weissbluth's book to be by far the best, most helpful book for parenting your kids' sleep habits. Thankfully, a friend with three great-sleeping children gave us a copy when we had our first child (after we stumbled and struggled through the first couple of months). We have given copies to a lot of friends and family before their kids were born (so they could read it before they were sleep-deprived, too). It's rather long for a sleep-deprived parent, but you can read portions that apply to your situation if you desire that approach.nat*s-notes
I am a "Bookworm" when it comes to my daughter, especially about her sleep. This book was filled with conflicting information in my opinion, such as saying a baby should sleep a certain number of hours day and night for optimal health, attention span, etc. and in the next breath, saying that a baby who wakes happy and cheerful is getting enough sleep as opposed to a baby who is cranky and irritable. This could prove very frustrating and confusing to a parent whose child is always happy and cheerful yet who isn't certain their child is really getting enough sleep. (Please note I am not so concerned about MY sleep, but my daughter's. Some parents project their own need for sleep onto their baby). Also, the "lessons" in the book do not provide for "what ifs", for example it's all well and good if your baby falls into the category of a "normal" or "natural" sleeper but does not offer advice or suggestions for a baby who isn't.PreciousGirlMom
I read nine book on baby sleep altogether besides general book on caring for a baby and this one is one of my two favorites. I will read more and my list of favorites may get longer. After checking the Health Sleep Habits, Happy Child out of the library twice and needing it once again, I decided to buy it. It has a lot of valuable info on sleep itself (and nap) as well as the differences between sleep of a newborn/baby/child/teenager/adult. The Dr. also talks a lot about the importance of naps referring to them as "a food for the brain" and how to have your baby get enough of it. The book is broken down by weeks then months with guidance on how to deal with your child's sleep. The book is very well organized. You can just go to a table of contents, look up your specific problem under a certain age of a child, then read a few pages and know what to do. I had no idea that babies had to be asleep two hours after waking last, I also learned how to read my son's sleepy clues (this in itself made a HUGE difference), I also did not realize that I could put my son down at 6-7pm for the night! The book also tells you how to handle different situation such as moving, or a daylight saving time change, crossing time zones, etc. I started applying Dr. Wiessbluth's ideas when my son was 8 weeks old by first moving him out of my bed and slowly into his room (a must by the age of 3 months if you do not want to upset your baby too much). The author favors the cried it out cold turkey approach (when a baby is a few months old not a newborn of course), which, I must admit, worked for me, but I could not do it pass two nights, I switched to Dr. Ferber's approach because I could check on my son from time to time. So now I use the cold turkey approach for day-time naps and periodically check on my son at bedtime. I like it that way, and it is easier on my son too. As I mentined earlier, I could not do the cry-it-out approach but still I like and recommend the book for all the info it carries.lola0722

10. Doctor Sleep [Book]

Reviews:
DOCTOR SLEEP is a sequel to THE SHINING. But it is also way more than this. The same way that BLACK HOUSE was the follow-up of THE TALISMAN (co-written by Stephen King Peter Straub), it also was a totally different book: THE TALISMAN was fantasy orientated, while BLACK HOUSE was, instead, horror, deeply related to THE DARK TOWER.The main story of DOCTOR SLEEP, takes place many years after the end of the first book (it was also the case for BLACK HOUSE after THE TALISMAN), and the genre is different : THE SHINING was a fantastic closed-door novel, with ghosts. To be short, it was about Jack Torrance, a writer, who was to spend a winter cut off from the rest of the world at the Overlook Hotel, with his wife Wendy his son Danny. The hotel will happen to be inhabited by ghosts, awoken by Danny's gift (the shining). THE SHINING was also a novel regarding the addiction the violence created by alcohol.DOCTOR SLEEP goes beyond fantastic. While evil was incarnated by ghosts in THE SHINING, it is instead personified by the True Knot, who are some sort of vampires, nourishing themselves off the Shining gift of (un)lucky individuals. We find similar themes in both novels: the importance of family, the alcoholism (Dany, anxious about his alcohol addiction follows AA meetings). It seems obvious that Stephen King has used this novel to exorcize his past addictions to alcohol drugs. Addiction that came back after his accident as he needed strong pain killers, but that he managed, once again, to get rid of.The gift of the SHINING was a minor element, while it is clearly a MAJOR component of DOCTOR SLEEP. Moreover, the terrifying True Knot are so realistic that it's scary. Way more terrifying, in my opinion, than the ghosts in THE SHINING. First published in 1977, THE SHINING was a novel that seemed "closer" (a family tragedy), more closed, more claustrophobic, but also more instantaneous. DOCTOR SLEEP is, instead, more opened, more pondered, more sophisticated, slower (in the way that it spans its story over 30+ years), and… going further.Stephen King continues to grow his universe, cross-referencing his work (as well as Joe Hill's NOS4A2, by mentioning Charlie Manx, p12). I even wonder if, in the end, CARRIE wasn't simply a girl that had a strong, developed Shining… which unfortunately, with the bullying of her fellow teenagers has pushed her to self-destruction.DOCTOR SLEEP is way more than a simple sequel. It is an elaborated and entire novel. It doesn't require to have read THE SHINING to be appreciated, nor seen stanley Kubrick's version (who, despite the fact that it is quite different from the book, has marked numerous people), nor the 1997 mini-series).DOCTOR SLEEP is a relentless novel, one that doesn't undo its grip (and that we do not want, either, to let go of). It is an excellent novel, one that I can only highly recommend, and one that will easily join other masterpieces such as CARRIE, THE STAND, or IT… for mentioning only a few of the most popular horror novels by Stephen King. But contrary to those books, Doctor Sleep seems quieter, and shows signs of maturity regarding life.DOCTOR SLEEP will not be remembered for being a sequel for THE SHINING, but for being an exceptional horror novel.angie.w
I guess Stephen King can't capture the magic of being a young, hungry, imagination-filled author. The Shining was such a great ghost story, I don't think it could ever be topped, and it definitely wasn't with this sequel. Danny has become an alcoholic to turn of his "shining" and hangs with the underbelly of society. His life is sad, somewhat disgusting and haunted. However, the supernatural quasi immortal or "psychic vampire" concept is just stupid, cheesy and boring. I couldn't get past the first 100 pages, which were hard labor to read. Reading should be enjoyable, not a chore. The original book 'The Shining" I flew threw it in a matter of days, Doctor Sleep I found myself dreading picking it up and forcing myself to read. I think King's best works are behind him.Carolyn
Confession: I'm not the biggest fan of The Shining. Blasphemous I know, but it's true. Although it's considered a classic, as the years go on its flaws become more apparent (the biggest of which being the flashbacks told in walls of text with no breaks). Thankfully with Doctor Sleep, King as shown that he is capable of evolving his writing style. Set 36 years after the events of The Shining, little Danny is all grown up and makes a living using his powers to help elderly people pass on (in-between visits to rehab). Along the way he crosses paths with a little girl named Abra who also has the shining, and is being pursued by a vampire-like gang called the True Knot who feed off of the life energy of those with the shining. What follows is a thrilling game of cat and mouse as Danny takes on the task of protecting Abra from the True Knot. To say more would give too much away, but just know that the interactions between Danny and Abra alone are enough reason to buy this book. Not only that, but King manages to masterfully humanize the True Knot without excusing their reprehensible actions throughout the book. The whole thing comes together in a sequel that surpasses its original, and shows that King knows how to evolve his writing style for a modern audience.PARESH

19. Why We Sleep: Unlocking The Power Of Sleep And Dreams [Ebook]

Product Details:
I suspect his book will do the same for you.” —bill gates a new york times bestseller and international sensation, this “stimulating and important book” (financial times) is a fascinating dive into the purpose and power of slumber.with two appearances on cbs this morning and fresh air's most popular interview of 2017, matthew walker has made abundantly clear that sleep is one of the most important but least understood aspects of our life. compared to the other basic drives in life—eating, drinking, and reproducing—the purpose of sleep remains more elusive. within the brain, sleep enriches a diversity of functions, including our ability to learn, memorize, and make logical decisions. it recalibrates our emotions, restocks our immune system, fine-tunes our metabolism, and regulates our appetite. dreaming creates a virtual reality space in which the brain melds past and present knowledge, inspiring creativity. in this “compelling and utterly convincing” (the sunday times) book, preeminent neuroscientist and sleep expert matthew walker provides a revolutionary exploration of sleep, examining how it affects every aspect of our physical and mental well-being. he also provides actionable steps towards getting a better night’s sleep every night. written with the precision of atul gawande, andrew solomon, and sherwin nuland, it is “recommended for night-table reading in the most pragmatic sense” (the new york times book review).

Description says high quality PDF but it is anything but that. This is literally just text in PDF format. I won't compare the text with the actual book but I'm hoping it's all there. No gift as promised. And received the book 2/3 days after purchase for a digital download which is, in my opinion, unacceptable. But nevertheless I have the book and it was only $1.45 so you get what you pay for I suppose.rubenag9
Again, technical medically but great info. Too many people that suffer sleeping. Makes a lot of sense and simple to try. Good warnings for those stuck on sleeping meds. So scary what we let doctors lead us to believe is safe and good. Need more people to challenge AMA and other levels of corruption in our country and broken health care system.feldenma55
