1. Letters From A Stoic By Seneca

Product Details:
A philosophy that saw self-possession as the key to an existence lived ‘in accordance with nature’, stoicism called for the restraint of animal instincts and the severing of emotional ties. these beliefs were formulated by the athenian followers of zeno in the fourth century bc, but it was in seneca (c. 4 bc – ad 65) that the stoics found their most eloquent advocate. stoicism, as expressed in the letters, helped ease pagan rome’s transition to christianity, for it upholds upright ethical ideals and extols virtuous living, as well as expressing disgust for the harsh treatment of slaves and the inhumane slaughters witnessed in the roman arenas. seneca’s major contribution to a seemingly unsympathetic creed was to transform it into a powerfully moving and inspiring declaration of the dignity of the individual mind. author biography lucius annaeus seneca (c.4bc – ad65) was born in spain but was raised according to the traditional values of the republic of rome. in ad48 he became tutor to the future emperor nero and became his principal civil advisor when he took power. his death was eventually ordered by nero in ad65, but seneca anticipated the emperor’s decree and committed suicide. robin campbell is a well-known translator.
Reviews:
Outstanding book which is as applicable to the modern mind as it was to the ancient, a book that will help you achieve a more contented mind and soul. One of the greatest book for stoicism along with Marcus Aurelius's meditations. 10/101922sarahm
Seneca's writings remain valuable for their plain language and genuine insight into human life. Though it was written almost two thousand years ago, Seneca's wisdom remains applicable and easily understandable. A rare achievement in philosophy.DANIEL
Seneca is a classic. Although I don't like him as much as the other big two stoics (Marcus and Epictetus) but that is just personal taste.James
2. The Stoic Challenge: A Philosopher's Guide To Becoming Tougher, Calmer, And More Resilient [Book]

Product Details:
Stoicism offers us an alternative approach. plumbing the wisdom of one of the most popular and successful schools of thought from ancient rome, philosopher william b. irvine teaches us to turn any challenge on its head. the stoic challenge, then, is the ultimate guide to improving your quality of life through tactics developed by ancient stoics, from marcus aurelius and seneca to epictetus. this book uniquely combines ancient stoic insights with techniques discovered by contemporary psychological research, such as anchoring and framing. the result is a surprisingly simple strategy for dealing with life’s unpleasant and unexpected challenges—from minor setbacks like being caught in a traffic jam or having a flight cancelled to major setbacks like those experienced by physicist stephen hawking, who slowly lost the ability to move, and writer jean-dominique bauby, who suffered from locked-in syndrome. the stoics discovered that thinking of challenges as tests of character can dramatically alter our emotional response to them. irvine’s updated “stoic test strategy” teaches us how to transform life’s stumbling blocks into opportunities for becoming calmer, tougher, and more resilient.

Reviews:
I'm a believer in the law of attraction, what you put out there is what you will get back. Mindset is everything. Author Bill Mauro's book takes that much deeper with his passion for the principles of Stoicism and how it can and should be applied to those who are in the law enforcement profession. He talks about discipline, vigilance, humility and tranquility but breaks them down even deeper. Mauro is a law enforcement officer and the examples he provides are great learning tools on how to apply stoicism to everyday situations when dealing with the community and coworkers and to de-escalation. If you are thinking about a career in law enforcement, just beginning one or have been on the job for a while, I believe this book would be an excellent addition to your reading material. It's easy to blame others but it all starts with you. There are some editing overlooks but they don't detract from the message.dmb213

Reviews:
As a public librarian I see countless popular philosophy books pass my way. Most of these works are terrible. Mr. Irvine's A Guide to the Good Life: The Ancient Art of Stoic Joy is a wonderful exception. I find it to be the best layman's introduction to Stoicism that I have ever read. The reader will discover a good review of general Stoic doctrines coupled with advice to implement the philosophy in his or her life. Indeed I liked the book so much that I created a Wikipedia article for it at: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A_guide_to_the_good_life See also Mr. Irvine's other work On Desire: Why We Want What We Want (ISBN: 978-0195327076) which further develops themes examined in A Guide to the Good Life… I eagerly await Mr. Irvine's next book.kerrytusc

Marcus aurelius was emperor of rome from 161 – 180 ad. his rule was absolute and – as the lives of other emperors reveal only too clearly – he was able, with impunity, to indulge in any vice, crime or licentious behaviour he chose. yet marcus aurelius resisted all such temptations, thanks to his belief in stoic philosophy. in the meditations, (which was never intended for public view), aurelius examines his inner nature, intimately describing his flaws and talents, and admonishing himself to live a good life.
