4. How To Tell A Story: An Ancient Guide To The Art Of Storytelling For Writers And Readers [Book]

Product Details:
"aaron sorkin, the oscar-winning director and screenwriter of such hits as the social network and the west wing, recently urged aspiring writers to become students and evangelists for aristotle's poetics. how is it that this small and rather obscure treatise by an ancient philosopher better known for metaphysics and ethics has become over the centuries the standard and best handbook for writing drama, novels, short stories, and now screenplays for film and television? how can a book that is admittedly difficult to read have become so influential among the small group of top professional writers? the short answer is that there is nothing better than aristotle's poetics for explaining the key points of successful storytelling. no one has examined and explained the keys to plot, character, audience perception, tragic pleasure, and dozens of other crucial points of writing like aristotle. part of the reason for this is that aristotle, even at his clearest, can be difficult to understand. the poetics in particular can be confusing to read on one's own without a skilled teacher's guidance. because of this, the poetics remains the purview of only those who make the effort to work through its careful arguments and astounding insights. and yet. philip freeman, thus, aims to produce a faithful yet readable translation along with introduction and commentary of aristotle's poetics for a modern audience, especially for aspiring writers who want to follow sorkin's advice and become immersed in this amazing work"–
5. Stories That Stick: How Storytelling Can Captivate Customers, Influence Audiences, And Transform Your Business [Book]
Product Details:
But what stories do you need to tell and how do you tell them? with case studies, company profiles, and anecdotes backed with original research, hall presents storytelling as the underutilized talent that separates the good from the best in business.stories that stick offers specific, actionable steps readers can take to find, craft, and leverage the stories they already have and simply aren't telling. every person, every organization has at least four stories at their disposal. will you tell yours?
Reviews:
The theme of storytelling is increasing in popularity, it seems the idea of using a narrative to increase the effectiveness of business communications is catching on, it is being recognised as being superior to a logical approach. "Business was all about logic. And then suddenly it wasn't." However, I was wondering whether the author would have anything to add to the dialogue, I was not disappointed. There was understandably overlap with other books I have read on the topic, but I found it both an enjoyable read as well as one that inspires you to look for stories that will impact positively on your business. It's a good one. There is a balance of information with a narrative. It's essentially broken into three parts: PART 1 The Irresistible Power of storytelling PART 2 The four essential stories PART 3 Create the story It becomes clear though, that not all stories are created equal and that the more engaging the story the greater the impact it will have on the brain's ability to be open to an offer. So investing time in finding a story, choosing a story and then making sure it's the right story, is time well spent The author shares different kinds of stories and provides examples of each. Value story, discovers the real value of the product to the market Founder story, where sharing relevant history is evident Purpose story, unites the team to achieve the goal The fourth one, the customer story, really grabbed my attention. It made so much sense that while reviews assist the prospect to narrow down the choices on offer, stories evoke emotions, speak to a moment, add details moving the audience from thinking logically to building connection. The prospect feels understood, "ie: someone like me has felt this way and found this to be the solutions. I want that, so I'll buy it." The importance of ASKING customers for the story was emphasised and identifying and asking specific questions is likely to encourage the response you are hoping for. I would highly recKarren H
This is a great resource for anyone who is struggling to stand apart from their competition. It can be used for any business, no matter what you're trying to achieve. Stories are so important in how we connect and relate to one another. This book breaks it down to define which stories should be used in different scenarios. I love how Kindra is not afraid of the hard-to-hear answer of "Your story should be as long as it needs to be." Not an exact science but completely correct. If you find your business struggling to connect or gain traction with customers, this book will help you examine the stories you are telling (or not telling) and guide you to find the RIGHT one. *I received an ARC from the publisher. That in no way influenced my opinion of this book.Amanda
I hadn't heard of Kindra Hall before, but I have learned so much from her book! I am a non profit director and the advice she gives the reader on how to tell a story in a captivating way is, well, captivating. Hall breaks down the different means by which a story takes hold and applies them to principles that can be easily imitated. Her style of writing is at once inclusive of all walks of life, while reminding us that a story that goes untold can be detrimental in many ways, especially in businesses or non profits. By giving the reader clear cut, detailed instructions on how to keep your audience engaged, Hall cuts through the fluff. She shares specific ways storytellers can motivate their audience to action through a well developed personal connection, rather than a flat, uninteresting rehash of a story. Finding the points at which a good story becomes an unforgettable story are paramount, shares Hall, and these points are attainable if the speaker is aware of what makes their audience tick. Hall has spent years on her craft, and the results speak for themselves. I read the book as an early reviewer, thanks to Harper Collins Publishers. I think this is one that deserves a spot on the bookshelf of any public speaker, pastor, business leader or non-profit director! I chose to leave a review and all opinions are my own. #HarperCollinsAmbassadorEmilyP

16. The Story Paradox: How Our Love Of Storytelling Builds Societies And Tears Them Down [Book]

Product Details:
"in 2012, jonathan gottschall received a strange letter from darpa, the research and development arm of the united states department of defense. what could a military research program possibly want with a literary critic? the letter was an invitation to a conference for a new program called storynet, a plan to map how stories affect our brains and use that knowledge to craft narratives that could more effectively drive compliance with military initiatives. darpa was trying to turn stories into weapons. reading this invitation (which gottschall declined), he remembered a famous proverb: the one who tells the story rules the world. at base, stories are tools. but stories are also inherently manipulative and divisive: they split the world into heroes who represent something good, and villains who do not. for most of human history, this was a manageable problem. virtual reality, personalized newsfeeds, stories that viewers can tailor in real time, deepfakes: these make it harder for us to deal with the ways that stories can confuse and divide us. the story paradox is a provocative and personal reckoning with the ways that storytelling lies at the heart of some of humanity's greatest threats. when plato envisioned the perfect state in the republic, he saw a world in which storytellers were banned. they were simply too dangerous.
