1. For White Folks Who Teach In The Hood… And The Rest Of Y'all Too: Reality Pedagogy And Urban Education [Book]

Product Details:
A new york times best seller – merging real stories with theory, research, and practice, a prominent scholar offers a new approach to teaching and learning for every stakeholder in urban education. – drawing on his own experience of feeling undervalued and invisible in classrooms as a young man of color and merging his experiences with more than a decade of teaching and researching in urban america, award-winning educator christopher emdin offers a new lens on an approach to teaching and learning in urban schools. for white folks who teach in the hood…and the rest of y’all too is the much-needed antidote to traditional top-down pedagogy and promises to radically reframe the landscape of urban education for the better. – he begins by taking to task the perception of urban youth of color as unteachable, and he challenges educators to embrace and respect each student’s culture and to reimagine the classroom as a site where roles are reversed and students become the experts in their own learning. – putting forth his theory of reality pedagogy, emdin provides practical tools to unleash the brilliance and eagerness of youth and educators alike—both of whom have been typecast and stymied by outdated modes of thinking about urban education. with this fresh and engaging new pedagogical vision, emdin demonstrates the importance of creating a family structure and building communities within the classroom, using culturally relevant strategies like hip-hop music and call-and-response, and connecting the experiences of urban youth to indigenous populations globally. merging real stories with theory, research, and practice, emdin demonstrates how by implementing the “seven c’s” of reality pedagogy in their own classrooms, urban youth of color benefit from truly transformative education. – for white folks who teach in the hood…and the rest of y'all too has been featured in mother jones, education week, weekend all things considered with michel martin, diverse: issues in higher education, pbs news hour, slate, the washington post, scholastic administrator magazine, essence magazine, salon, color – lines, ebony, huffington post education
Reviews:
Great read for anyone working in the urban public school system!drdesmond7
The Book is filled with racial stereotypes of white people. Does not help anyone become a better teacher. Seems the author is intent on telling his own story, maybe he needs to get published to get tenure. Seems to me he hasn't been in an inner city High School classroom in a very long time. This book is a waste of time and money.porthurontennis

This is THE BOOK I've been looking for. I'm a substitute teacher, but not a natural classroom manager. I've been struggling with that issue since the beginning. Fred's book takes on classroom management in detail. I've already gotten some good input on what I'm doing wrong and why I suddenly feel like I've got a brain freeze in the middle of a typical high spirited restless group of middle schoolers, and I'm only half way through the book. Now if I could just flip a switch and begin instantly using the new ideas and behaviors I'm learning about, I'd have it made most of the time even if I am just in the class for a day. I think the biggest struggle for me and the most important thing so far is to STOP and BREATHE DEEP before trying to do anything. That clears your head and allows you to actually think about how to handle a particular situation instead of going blank and sorta hoping for the best til you're brain kicks back in or the period ends. For me, teaching is easy, even fun a lot of times. Classroom management has been a major struggle. I feel like reading and using the information in Fred's book is going to give me more time and energy for what I really want and need to be doing in class.rice9055
This book covers a lot of classroom management that is not covered by your college degree in education. Very practical advise throughout the book.rajhatee
