Reviews:
This is a beautiful hard cover book containing what many would consider essentials (practical knowledge) for boys preparing for life. It may have some conservative views in it, which it okay with me. Overall, it is just very basic, practical information that many families are too busy these days to pass on. I originally bought it for an 8 year old boy. However, once I had the book in hand, I realized that it was more appropriate for a boy of 12 or or older. I liked the book too much to return it, so I am keeping to read and/or to give as a gift when the right opportunity presents itself. This is a high quality purchase for which I paid only $8.99! What a value!Olive
great book for boys – grandsons and great grandsons – excellent content for all youth – girls or boys\ from Invictus – "it matters not how straight the gate – how charged with punishments the scroll – I am the master of my fate – the captain of my soul." this is something worth remembering and repeating and sharing with our young people.sleepyswan

Reviews:
So everyone in my household is beyond the demographic for this book, but we loved the movie so I was curious to see how the source material fared. Honestly, I think the movie treated the material better. The book was fun, and it was nice to see the thought of "turning good" being the bad guy's instead of some other character, but overall the way the events were portrayed in the book simply weren't as entertaining as the film. I wasn't too keen on the art style, either.Eric
My 8 yo is not a bad reader but not keen on heavy reading. These books are mostly pictures. There's very little text at all on each page. For instance, one page may have a picture with the word "Boom" in large letters all over it. But it's very engaging and fun with the result that she might read 3 books in an evening. So get them all.Nil

Really, this book is just fantastic. It may be a little boring at the start, but it is really interesting and exciting. I was actually amazed by how breathtaking it was. I would definitely recommend this for people who like adventure, excitement and mystery. This book is up in one of the best books I've ever read. This book is the GOAT of all books.Budah
Originally reviewed on Just Me My Books. The book follows Percy, who ends up vaporising his maths teacher on a trip to a New York museum, and no one seems to notice. When he is expelled from yet another boarding school, his mother treats him to a weekend at the beach, even though it looks like a hurricane is about to descend on them. It's only on the arrival of Percy's friend Grover do they realise something is wrong and that a Minotaur is after Percy. Soon, Percy arrives at Camp Half-Blood and learns that he is a Demigod – half human, half god. After being recognised by his father, one of the three gods who vowed they would not have any more children, Percy finds out he is being blamed for stealing Zeus' master lightning bolt, and so is sent on a quest to retrieve it from the Underworld before the Summer Solstice, in order to prevent war on Mount Olympus. With the help of his Satyr Grove and fellow camper Annabeth, they discover that the gods have more to worry about than Percy being the son of a powerful god, and that Kronos maybe trying to make a comeback.victoria.k
My Appraisal of the book Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief Written by Rick Riordan If you were wondering about this book and can't decide if you want to read it, I read it and maybe this will help you decide. This book tells the first story of the Percy Jackson Series. The story is mainly based on Greek mythology but with a modern twist. Read about the marvelous first adventure of main character Percy Jackson (a teen from Manhattan) and his friends as they fight monsters and try to keep peace between the Olympian gods. This story is full of action and adventure and will keep readers wanting more. This story won't let you down, except that there is more in the series, and you haven't read it all. yet. I highly recommend this book. Opinion of the Tome GuyThe Tome Guy

Reviews:
I read this book as a child and loved it! Some of the passages are still very clear in my mind decades later. This is a fictional account of a boy who runs away from home to live alone in the woods. But the depth of story and the detailed account of his various survival techniques have made many question whether the story was true. Now that I have children of my own, I had to buy the book for them. Its a great book and I highly recommend it!butterrum

Reviews:
I bought this series for my son around 2.5 yrs ago. We are planning to move in a few months so I asked him if there were any books on his bookshelf we could let go of. He responded by letting me know that this set of books was one of his all time favorites and letting go of it was not an option. I was pleased to hear that he still enjoys the set.Crissy
My children and I are doing The Mysterious Benedict Society by Trenton Lee Stewart as a read-aloud this summer. I loved it on so many levels. It's a fun mystery, encouraging the reader to solve the puzzles and riddles along with the characters. It recognizes the many different ways a child can be "gifted" and how all of these are valuable to the team. It promotes family, co-operation, honesty, overcoming adversity, fighting temptation, strengthening our wills to do the right thing, and it points out the dangers of blindly accepting messages of the mass media. Published in 2007, I believe this book deserves to take its place among the classics of children's literature.lovetolearn8

Rather late to the Heartstopper party but ordered the first 4 book volumes for me and my daughter to read. We both absolutely loved Alice Oseman's touching handling of Charlie and Nick's flourishing relationship – they expertly demonstrate how much can be conveyed through images. Came to these books via the Netflix series and I loved to see how much of the content and images from the first two books are reflected in the Netflix series (such as Charlie on tiptoes to kiss Nick). Have already read books 3 and 4 several times and looking forward to this being interpreted in a sensitive way for the next series. Also can't wait for volume 5 of these books to be published so we can keep enjoying the Heartstopper characters' journeys.Claire F
I want to make people aware that even though this looks like a copic book and meets the lexile range of elementary students, it is not suitable for elementary aged children without the concent of their parents. It talks about topics that some may not find developmentally appropriate. According to the book rating, even though it has words that meet elementary lexile range, the book is recommended for grades 9 and up. I feel by the author using elementary lexile levels but young adult topics, it is only fair to put the caution out to parents who may not wish for their child to be exposed to such topics at a young age.elementaryteacher

My son enjoyed the bookASHLEY
This is a very good book dealing with a heart breaking subject in a very considerate manner. You get to think about the shooting of young black boys from different perspectives. I recommend the book for children of 11 upwards, bearing in mind that it could have a disturbing effect on them if not discussed before or during the read. It's an interesting book for adult too. Very sad.rammer-uk
10. The Last Kids On Earth: Max Brallier – Book

Product Details:
The simpsons meets the walking dead in this hilarious post-apocalyptic graphic novel for middle-grade readers. ever since the monster apocalypse hit town, average thirteen year old jack sullivan has been living in his tree house, which he's armed to the teeth with catapults and a moat, not to mention video games and an endless supply of oreos and mountain dew scavenged from abandoned stores. but jack alone is no match for the hoards of zombies and winged wretches and vine thingies, and especially not for the eerily intelligent monster known only as blarg.
Reviews:
I bought this for my 8 year old son with the hope that it would grab his interest enough to help cut back on his desire to play video games constantly. This book really did the trick. He couldn’t put it down and finished it in a few days. It’s gross in a kid-appropriate way, very silly, and thoroughly entertaining. Definitely worth the purchase!SLCont
My daughter discovered and loved the TV series on Netflix (clearly advertised on the book covers). I recently found out it was initially a book series, which made sense, since I also watched it with my 11-yo, and was surprised at how much I enjoyed it myself! The books arrived beautifully presented, just with a cross of plastic to protect and hold the set together. They were all in perfect condition, and we started reading the books right away — my daughter being bicultural, her English is not yet where it could be at, what with her attending a French school rather than a British one… so we read together and I make her watch everything I can in English. This is American but luckily the British publisher used British spelling throughout, which is particularly important in our case! She is absolutely loving these books, and I am thrilled to see how much help it was to watch the series in English and then read the books. Esp. because the series closely followed the events of the books, which was another great piece of news! So anyway, I highly recommend this very affordable set, which is surprisingly well written, witty, laugh-out-loud funny, and highly enjoyable on the whole.A V. H. R.

Reviews:
I bought this book for my son who has tourette syndrome. He loved it and insisted that I read it. Normally I don't read/like books written for youth but this book was awesome. I couldn't put it down and read it in two sittings back to back staying up way past my bedtime. My son thought it was so great to read about a hero with tourett's and that the author has TS too. I will definitely be buying the rest of the books in the series.dancingleaves
This story will keep you up all night reading. At first it seems a little slow because the author is setting up the main character's background ( I guess that's normal) but it certainly doesn't stay that way for long. Soon you know what is going on the main character's life changes in a heart beat and from there your hooked. There's not vampires werewolves or magicians but don't let that put you off from this book. It's very much so worthy the attention from the twilight fantasy crowd. Being one of those myself I very much enjoyed this book and found myself contemplating the rest of the story just a few chapters in anxious to see what happens. I am a hard core fantasy reader preferring the werewolf shape shifter and vampire stories but this one caught my attention. The read isn't nearly as complex as some other good books I've read but it is definitely in my top 5 of good books. In this story you see how a life can change and make a young person grow into an adult in just a few short moments. I think this book is full of moral and the idea of the value of human life. There is good (not cheesy) comic relief that will make you laugh out loud then delve you right back into the heart pounding story surrounding the main character and his friends. The electroclan is rising and I'm waiting to see what they do next!JAMreviewer
What an amazing book! I was entirely enthralled with Michael Vey: The prisoner of Cell 25. This is Richard Paul Evan’s first endeavor into the young adult (YA) genre; and I must say he excelled in his mission. This book is very well written and appropriate for young readers, something which boys will find electrifying. However, don’t let that deter your adventure, anyone can experience and enjoy Michael Vey. Truly, a must read!UtahPianoMan

Reviews:
As a nearly 1/2 century old woman, I thought there was nothing I could read that would resemble something "new under the sun"…I am here to admit that I was wrong and now proudly own 5 of Neil Gaimans books and intend to read everything else he has ever written. When Stephen King said "we have a treasure in Neil Gaiman" he was making an understatement. For fantasy, fiction, adventure and mystery readers, he has it all in each and every book I have read! I am even looking forward to the comics and will be watching "Coraline" again (not knowing his hand in it until after the first book). I highly recommend that you buy NEW from a reputable book store so he gets his fair share! If I were healthy and not home bound due to a genetic ailment, I would search him out and beg an hour or ten of his time to get to know him. Brilliance never shone so bright as it does in the mind, body and share soul of another writer. If by chance Neil should ever read this review, I wish to say thank you. Thank you for helping me forget my physical pain and the sadness that my active life has become due to this illness because when I read your books, I become a part of them as if welcomed personally. Thank You Michelle McKim Valparaiso IN PS Please announce if you are ever in Chicago for a book signing, I promise just to say thank you and not hoard your time, I must wear a mask when in public so don't fear, I am not contageous! I love me some Neil Gaiman mind!mrdoug0726
I am a self confessed fan of Neil Gaimans work, however, I dont feel this is one of his better efforts. Anansi Boys seems somewhat flat. One of the dust jacket reviews draws a comparison to Douglas Adams, of Hitchhiker's fame, however, Anansi Boys doesn't seem to measure up. Where I actually liked the Hitchhiker's protagonist, Arthur Dent, I found myself ambivalent about the fate of Anansi Boys Fat Charlie. The characters were a bit too two-dimensional for my taste. True, I laughed through the first third of the book, but the remainder just didnt have the staying power of an Adams or Pratchett work. For a better example of what this novel could have been check out Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaimans Good Omens. Still, Im going to keep it in my collection. There were some interesting concepts that I still think about, and probably will long after I've forgotten the story. Sorry, Neil.egroegpm

A 2016 coretta scott king author honor book, and recipient of the walter dean myers award for outstanding children’s literature. in this coretta scott king honor award–winning novel, two teens—one black, one white—grapple with the repercussions of a single violent act that leaves their school, their community, and, ultimately, the country bitterly divided by racial tension.a bag of chips. that’s all sixteen-year-old rashad is looking for at the corner bodega. what he finds instead is a fist-happy cop, paul galluzzo, who mistakes rashad for a shoplifter, mistakes rashad’s pleadings that he’s stolen nothing for belligerence, mistakes rashad’s resistance to leave the bodega as resisting arrest, mistakes rashad’s every flinch at every punch the cop throws as further resistance and refusal to stay still as ordered. but how can you stay still when someone is pounding your face into the concrete pavement? there were witnesses: quinn collins—a varsity basketball player and rashad’s classmate who has been raised by paul since his own father died in afghanistan—and a video camera. soon the beating is all over the news and paul is getting threatened with accusations of prejudice and racial brutality. quinn refuses to believe that the man who has basically been his savior could possibly be guilty. but then rashad is absent. and absent again. and again. and the basketball team—half of whom are rashad’s best friends—start to take sides. as does the school. and the town. simmering tensions threaten to explode as rashad and quinn are forced to face decisions and consequences they had never considered before. written in tandem by two award-winning authors, this four-starred reviews tour de force shares the alternating perspectives of rashad and quinn as the complications from that single violent moment, the type taken from the headlines, unfold and reverberate to highlight an unwelcome truth.

Compelling. Mu skn loved it. He didn't put it down.MICHAEL
I for one believe that this book has a modern and well stated emphasis on today's society. When reading this book, I discovered that the dialect was much parallel to the spoken dialect of today. There was no dialect specifically dedicated to the book, but it was written as just as someone would be normally speaking. Therefore, it was in my opinion easier to comprehend the story. I also believe the story was just and satisfying. The main summary of the book was the story of a black teenager being arrested and brutally assaulted by a white police officer, for a crime in which the former had not even committed. From there we met characters like Quinn, who were caught in the crossfire of which side of the debate surrounding the assault to be on. To me, to see the experiences and feelings of people that have not only been victimized, but also forced to make hard decisions such as Quinn and others, made me see the real life issue this book is based off on, in a different light. It made me see all the issues of the people that are enveloped in this situation and question what my actions would be. As for such, I'd believe if such a book could allow me to open a new view of judgement, I personally advocate it for others to read as well.Centennial15
Rashad is a 16 yr old African-American boy who is accused of stealing at a local neighborhood convenience store. Before he can even explain what happened, he finds himself face down on the sidewalk being savagely beaten by a cop – a white cop. Quinn is a 16 yr old Caucasian boy who goes to school with Rashad and stumbles upon him being beaten by the cop – a cop who happens to be a close family friend. What follows is an exploration of race in America, community & family values, and what it means to truly be an ally. Tie-ins: Invisible Man by Ralph Ellison, police brutality, current events Disclaimer for teachers and librarians: there is a LOT of cursing in this book, including the F word, but it's mainly used as an adjective and not as a sexually explicit verb, if that matters in your school. And it is used very authentically (i.e. this IS how teenage boys talk to each other!).Marti

I remembered when I first read this book, it shocked me on how the children transformation to adulthood, or the stark reality of childhood was thrust upon them. it was not by choice but bnaturally, for survival. This makes a very good read about how boys becomes men. It will make us ponder on ourselves as adults on which we have turned out too. I am looking forward to having this new cover version in my collection.Shahrizad Baharom Shah

Reviews:
The title of this book caught my eye and although I don't yet have a teenage boy I hoped to get a glimpse into the future and prepare myself. This book deals specifically with boys ages eleven to nineteen and covers a wide variety of topics. This book is aimed at helping mothers understand their teenage sons – why they act the way they do the pressures they face from peers and what they need (and don't need) from their parents. One very helpful aspect of this book was the scripture references included for dealing with specific situations. Most but not all of them were very appropriate to the situation and will allow teenagers (both boys and girls) to see what the Bible has to say on the topic at hand. For a few of the scripture references (in particular the section on competition and survival of the fittest") I didn't see quite as strong a connection as I wanted. I also thought the emails from teenage boys were eye-opening. I was aware of many of the temptations facing teenagers but the emails gave me more perspective on their struggles as they grow toward adulthood. Overall I feel like this book is worth reading to make mothers more aware of what your teenager may be facing (both struggles everyone knows about e.g. drugs and newer issues created because of today's technology) and to give you ideas on how to approach him in dealing with those issues. It also gave me a new perspective on how my role as a mother changes as my son gets older. "my3kids
What Your Son isn't telling you Michael Ross & Susie Shellenburger I have two very young boys age 3 and 6ÖI was interested in reviewing this book as a mother and a youth worker. Although I know there is nothing new under the sun I also acknowledge that our children face a myriad of things at younger ages. I was surprised at the scope of this book and it's readability. It deals with so many issues and offers great biblical wisdom and insight into effectively dealing with these issues and teaching our young men how to deal with them also. An excellent resource for any parent or youth worker. I truly appreciated the way the authors used true life experiences of youth age boys to show examples. A special thanks to the authors for their hard work and thoughtful application of the truth of the Word of God to all situations. An excellent resource I highly recommend it I know mine will be well used. Thank you Bethany House for this free review copy.
