5. Modern Mind: An Intellectual History Of The 20th Century [Book]

Product Details:
The author of "war on the mind" presents a major narrative history of the thoughts, ideas, individuals, scientific discoveries, literature, and art of the 20th century. this major narrative history of the people and ideas that shaped the modern world is a brilliantly reasoned examination of the thought and individuals that made twentieth-century culture. beginning with four seminal ideas that were introduced in 1900 — the unconscious, the gene, the quantum, and picasso's first paintings in paris-peter watson has produced a fluent and engaging narrative of the intellectual tradition of the past century. the book is divided into four parts — freud to wittgenstein; spengler to animal farm; sartre to the sea of tranquillity; the counterculture to kosovo — and there are forty-two chapters. watson emphasizes that "the century may be understood as a period during which the scientific method colonized all modes of thought and changed the way thinking is done." he sees the first half of the century as a period of discovery and the last half as a period of analysis, synthesis, and understanding, and he explores the role of the united states in setting the century's agenda in many areas. unlike more conventional histories, in which the focus is on political events and personalities, the modern mind is an illuminating blueprint of twentieth-century thought and culture and the men and women who created it.

Reviews:
Halloween is the best time of year to read a book about ghost! This is a powerful, bone-chilling collection of short stories that will have you sleeping with the lights on. Very macabre and menacing….just right for making your hair stand on end! My favorite was the story of the antique phone that sends calls from the dead. Good spooky stuff!zuzigirl
It was very good.. Not bad for a first publication? I definately liked Heart Shaped Box and horns a tad more, but did enjoy the short stories and joe hills style of writitng is amazing. He really has a gift for capturing your attention and holding it until he decides to let go. I think it is exciting to see how a writer grows with every book that they write! I decided tio purchase this book because I have read his other work and couldn't pass up an opportunity to read more.ivygirl29
This book is a collabaration of well thought out and written stories. Ghost stories and more, that you'll enjoy.lupic5347
7. Modern Classics The Outsider [Book]

Product Details:
'my mother died today. or maybe yesterday, i don't know.' in the outsider (1942), his classic existentialist novel, camus explores the alienation of an individual who refuses to conform to social norms. meursault, his anti-hero, will not lie. when his mother dies, he refuses to show his emotions simply to satisfy the expectations of others. and when he commits a random act of violence on a sun-drenched beach near algiers, his lack of remorse compounds his guilt in the eyes of society and the law. yet he is as much a victim as a criminal.albert camus' portrayal of a man confronting the absurd, and revolting against the injustice of society, depicts the paradox of man's joy in life when faced with the 'tender indifference' of the world. sandra smith's translation, based on close listening to a recording of camus reading his work aloud on french radio in 1954, sensitively renders the subtleties and dream-like atmosphere of l'étranger.albert camus (1913-1960), french novelist, essayist and playwright, is one of the most influential thinkers of the 20th century. his most famous works include the myth of sisyphus (1942), the plague (1947), the just (1949), the rebel (1951) and the fall (1956). he was awarded the nobel prize for literature in 1957, and his last novel, the first man, unfinished at the time of his death, appeared in print for the first time in 1994, and was published in english soon after by hamish hamilton.sandra smith was born and raised in new york city and is a fellow of robinson college, university of cambridge, where she teaches french literature and language. she has won the french american foundation florence gould foundation translation prize, as well as the pen book-of-the-month club translation prize.

Książki na drugi dzień u mnie! W idealnym stanie za świetna cena
Having re-read the Plague recently (it seemed apposite given the current Covid situation) it reminded me of just how good a writer Camus was, so I wanted to also re-read L'etranger – but my schoolboy French is now way too far in the past for me to read it in the original. The English version still catches the sombre introspective mood of the narrator perfectly. A great book.katyatyler

11. One Hundred Years Of Solitude By Gabriel Garcia Marquez

Product Details:
One of the twentieth century's enduring works, one hundred years of solitude is a widely beloved and acclaimed novel known throughout the world, and the ultimate achievement in a nobel prizewinning career. the novel tells the story of the rise and fall of the mythical town of macondo through the history of the buenda family. it is a rich and brilliant chronicle of life and death, and the tragicomedy of humankind. in the noble, ridiculous, beautiful, and tawdry story of the buenda family, one sees all of humanity, just as in the history, myths, growth, and decay of macondo one sees all of latin america. love and lust, war and revolution, riches and poverty, youth and senility – the variety of life, the endlessness of death, the search for peace and truth – these universal themes dominate the novel. whether he is describing an affair of passion or the voracity of capitalism and the corruption of government, gabriel garca m? rquez always writes with the simplicity, ease, and purity that are the mark of a master. alternately reverential and comical, one hundred years of solitude weaves the political, personal, and spiritual to bring a new consciousness to storytelling. translated into dozens of languages, this stunning work is no less than an accounting of the history of the human race.

Reviews:
I originally checked this book out of the library, but while reading it I realized that I had to own a copy for myself. Some of the best representative science fiction short stories by the best authors of the twentieth century–which is basically all of science fiction up to the year 2000. This is a great overview of the subject and it is introduced by a thoughtful essay on the subject by the Editor. The Editor selected one story from each author, and that story is preceded by an introduction about the writing of that author. This book is a great intro into science fiction, giving the reader a taste of some of the significant writers and their stories, over the history of the genre. A smart educator could even use it as a textbook.mattarch47

Reviews:
Version ist Englisch von VizMedia. Schwarz/weiss Einzelbnde ohne Farbe.
Terrifying and sad the world that Kenji and his friends grow up in is not one that I would want to live in. If any gods exist I pray to them that our world does not end up like the one that Urasawa has foreseen.Vaylon Kenadell

This book was purchased for our high school student for school, but her younger siblings are always borrowing it. What a wonderful way to entice children to read history. You won't be disappointed with this book!chicknpatti39
