I purchased this to replace a very old kindle that was being lugged around for many years. I have experience from kindle first generation to kindle fire first generations (as well as 3rd gen), to kindle with keyboards and the first paperwhite model. I must say, this is by far the best for reading i have handled. This uses the fantastic e-ink still on a gently backlit screen, easy to read in the dark or sunlight, any setting. It is light and connects quickly to the internet and my library, loads books fast and flipping through books is quick. I habe a case that works with it and when it's closed it puts it to sleep, and when opens it awakens. Battery life is very good, one charge lasts over 30 days of use for me at least thus far, never really let it get all the way dead. Overall, this is a reasonable value and if it lasts as long as my previous versions, and they don't make it software obsolete, i will be a very happy buyer.averageguy
I bought this recently as I grew tired of reading on my iPhone and iPad. The former is too small and the latter too big and both are too heavy. This Kindle is Goldilocks of screens, exactly right. The digital ink actually makes for a reading experience that is both closer to paper than LCD screens and also better as well. Also, in direct light I usually turn off the back light to conserve power as it really isn't needed. This would be ideal for reading poolside on a bright day. The only downside is that the screen has a slight but perceptible delay to it, sort of like computers from the late '90s. It's not bad, really, but just not as instantaneous as an iPhone or iPad. Still, for the purpose of reading books, I believe it is outstanding. Highly recommended.TheRaVen
Oh I’m literally obsessed. I was shocked. I was super anti-kindle it for YEARS because I’m not a screen reader, I like turning pages, I like a physical book collection, yada yada. BUT — I’m not even kidding, I cannot put this thing down. I read 4 books in 7 days because of how much I truly enjoy it & how easy it makes reading. It’s not super “technologically advanced” like an iPad/iPhone & can sometimes be a little slow to get back to your library or shop the kindle store, but honestly I have 0 issues with it & it’s easy to learn how to use. Part of me also wishes the book covers could have some color BUT I think that would mess with the overall “true to paper” style so I don’t mind the black & white. The screen is not your average computer/tablet screen. It’s soft, perfectly lit, & is such a comfortable read. You can set the text to multiple fonts/sizes, change the brightness & warmness, and the charge holds for weeks. I’m now actually searching for the physical books I have ON the kindle because I’d rather read them there. If you’re on the fence, I doubt you’ll be disappointed. It is slightly more expensive but waiting for a promotion/sale made it definitely doable for me!Violet

I absolutely adored this book. It's the story of the relationship between these two people, Sam and Sadie who met in a hospital when they were kids and end up making games together when they grow up. It's a wonderful exploration of the deep, messy and yet incredibly strong relationship between the pair of them, which is not a sexual one, and I found it fascinating. It is not always a smooth relationship, but it's one where it's so clear to the reader how much they mean to each other and it makes the rough times tragic, especially when you jump from one of their perspectives to the other. I also felt that it was interestingly told, too. For example, for the first section of the book it is constantly jumping between them as kids in the hospital and them 8 years later when in uni, while also throwing in some quotes from them in the future about this time period that they give in a Kotaku interview. It's a book so full of love and struggle and I just found such it a wonderful read. It made me cry.Alexandre T.

In Blink, Malcolm Gladwell offers his account of humanity's seemingly instantaneous judgment in critical situations. The book features a series of fascinating anecdotal case studies, skilled interweavings of psychological experiments, explanations, and unexpected connections which have become part of Gladwell's writing style since Tipping Point. At the outset of Blink, he illustrates how incredibly complex decisions are often made in the matter of seconds: experts on Greek art, who had no vested interest in judging a rare 6th-century sculpture of a youth as authentic, sensed immediately that it was fake. But Gladwell points out that if expertise, or mere accumulated experiences sufficed, humans could unerringly trust these decisions made as rapidly as the blink of an eye, but, as he illustrates through several counterpuntal stories, such blinks can also be deceptive. It should be noted that he seems to stretch some of his examples to conform to his blink-of-an-eye theory. Published in 2009, this book claims to turn marketing principles on their head. Instead of focusing on price, features, service and quality, Sinek suggests a reversal of priorities. Start with the "why", clearly explaining the purpose, cause or belief. This can connect to the values and beliefs of early adopter clients (who are very loyal to your "why"). The "how" and "what" in Sinek's formula only come after "why". He cites Apple, Harley Davidson, and Southwest Airlines as successful proponents of this approach. With customers being willing to accept less choice, higher prices, or some other inconvenience in order to access the company's products or services (such as Apple customers queuing through the night for the release of a new iPhone). What Sinek is advocating goes well beyond the Vision, Mission and Values of an organisation. It is about an emotive narrative that can communicate purpose/cause/belief, clearly and in words. The book is certainly inspiring, and relevant to some areas of marketing. It has since been overtaken by a rise and fall of influencers, mass acceptance of sustainability/ESG, and broader attempts by business to tap into loyalty rather than (price) manipulations. While I'm sympathetic to the power of these ideas in a small subset of cases, I remain sceptical of their full application for most organisations (who continue to compete on price, features, service, and quality). Is Sinek's core thesis only applicable to exceptionally well-positioned businesses?

The chapters were a page and a half each and each had a different story. I only read about a quarter. I am assuming it all come together at the end for a profound meaning, but I found the stopping and starting of chapters hard to wrap my head around and I got bored. Not may books I havent finished. I am in awe of this book. Of Glennon. Of her story. Of her strength and her weakness and the way she owns it all. I genuinely want to be best friends with her. I feel like she is a fierce friend. Even if she doesn't leave the house. Honestly, that'd be the best thing because I don't really leave that much either. I think this book is a must-read. In a lot of ways, it felt like a conversation Glennon and I were having. Like we were sitting in front of a fireplace or in a coffee shop or at dinner and we were just talking about life and love and what the meaning of it all is, and this is what she was telling me. As a former editor of the National Geographic she excelled at broadening the narrative to discuss anthropology (lifestyles of the South American Indian tribes), zoology (exotic and dangerous animals of the Amazon jungle), and politics (Theodore Roosevelt's ambitions and relations with Latin America). The book weaves these topics into an amazing and true story the planning and execution of the South American expedition of 1914. From its excerpts of the explorers' letters and lectures we get an intimate understanding of each participant's motives and foibles. Millard's portrayal of TR is more balanced than I have seen in other biographies. Roosevelt is a man of such contradictions–boyish enthusiasm and iron discipline, superhuman willpower and human sentiment, exceptional intelligence and a common touch–that I struggle to imagine how all these qualities fit together in one mind. The detailed profiles of the American and Brazilian explorers and how their decisions reflected their character make this book a good primer on leadership and management. I've really enjoyed this book! (I'm still reading it, but I'm almost finished). Unsweetined is a very interesting read. Yes, Jodie laments and expresses regret. But that's not the general tone of the book. She instead tells the story of how she got into showbiz, how she navigated adolescence (while being bullied), and how she spiraled into addiction years later. I definitely recommend reading this book, especially if you're a recovering addict. You'll relate to Jodie's feelings, and to some her experiences, too.tgr_82
