Bought the books as a lot of reviews commented that it was a must have. Tried out the chocolate cake, custard and brioche doughnuts recipes and all three were not true recipes. The chocolate cake was horrible and way to runny. The texture was almost like rubber when finished baking and took way longer then the time it said it would take and the doughnuts recipe needed a lot more flour, like a whole 1 1/2 cups more then what it stated in the cookbook. The custard wasn't like any creme patisserie I've ever made. It was wayyyyy to sweet and still very runny to be filled in any doughnut! The cookbook itself is well textured with great photography etc however, if Bernadette were selling a picture book it would pass but to sell recipes that aren't true to its measurements etc..is not only a lie but a scam.Baker 100

It is obvious that this book was written for an audience in the UK, not for an American audience. The ingredients measurements are in metric units, rather than in teaspoons, tablespoons, and cups. The recommended oven baking temperatures are in Celsius units, while American ovens are calibrated in Fahrenheit units. Many of the ingredients are items that you'd find on the shelves in British markets, but not very often on the shelves in American markets. For example, "Golden Syrup" is a common ingredient and when I was looking for it, I only found it in one store in a metropolitan area of over one million people. Most of American is rural and purchasing baking ingredients from on-line sellers can get excessively expensive quickly. Because the instructions were written in metric and Celsius unit and some of the ingredients are hard to find in the U.S., i could not recommend this book to most casual bakers in the U.S.260remguy
It needed to be made clearer that the book was second hand, maybe this was down to me not reading all the information. It is in very poor condition, the spine is damaged and the glue has come unattached the full length of the book, the pages all appear to be intact. The ingredients aren't exotic, you should be able to find them fairly easily even if you don't live in a large city. The desserts are such that anyone would love them no matter what kind of eater they are. There is a lot of information about substitutes for eggs & dairy with tips as to what these substitutions work best in. Honestly it was the first vegan dessert cookbook I have purchased. I checked it out at my local library first and I was very impressed. This book was first put out in 1994 but I noticed it has new recipes, including all the old ones that made it a winner. The only thing Jewish about this book is the baker, Mr. Greenstein. True, you do have recipes for bagels and Jewish corn bread, but most of the bread recipes are from all over the world. It is fairly comprehensive. This is a wonderful book, up to Dorie Greenspan's expected standards. The title is somewhat misleading, in that not all recipes involve baking. Most do, however. And there are no savory recipes. She really should have called this a dessert book, not a baking book. But, now on to content: This book contains dessert recipes that are relatively simple. No '3 days to make a cake' business here. Her premise is to provide dessert recipes that can be made in the home, but with a French touch. Some recipes are from French chefs, some she received from friends over there, some she devised herself, but all are wonderful. Her notes at the top of the recipes are invaluable. She provides some 'mother' recipes, and builds on them. This is a good book for a beginning cook who wants a French touch to dessert, and for the diehard Dorie fans like me.craftmaven2005
