Reviews:
I'm going into the Biotechnology program at the University of Nevada (excellent biotech program) and this book (along with several others I purchased) is perfect!! I love the way the information is laid out and it even goes over stuff previously presented in other bio classes i.e. cell structure, molecular bonds, stuff like that. I found the diction to be completely understandable and it actually kind of sucks you in when you really start reading it…completely fascinating! I truly recommend this book for the beginner biotech student…it'll totally prep you before your classes start. 🙂g_o_e

Reviews:
I frankly didn't know what to expect from this textbook. While I'm not affiliated with any institution, I'm an autodidact with interest in genetics and biochemistry. This book gives an excellent, thorough introduction to a very broad swathe of categories. It is not a specialist book, as that is intended by the authors I believe (biotechnology, the text mentions, is a huge multidisciplinary field). What it was good for was bridging my recent microbiology and chemistry exposure and showing me applications in the real world. It also gives a good image of possibilities and current limitations, as well as areas of research that I may potentially pursue. While this was great, I have to deduct some points for the lack of concrete data contained in the textbook. It was clearly written for someone with minimal exposure to technical mathematics or statistics, perhaps for a first year student of biological sciences. That is both a blessing and a curse, as the takeaway from the text itself is a little nebulous. It certainly lacks any tangible biophysics component. Perhaps that was the intent, but it certainly makes me hanker for a little more data driven deliveries.MichaelDueck

In the fall of 1980, genentech, inc., a little-known california genetic engineering company, became the overnight darling of wall street, raising over $38 million in its initial public stock offering. coming at a time of economic recession and declining technological competitiveness in the united states, the event provoked banner headlines and ignited a period of speculative frenzy over biotechnology as a revolutionary means for creating new and better kinds of pharmaceuticals, untold profit, and a possible solution to national economic malaise. drawing from an unparalleled collection of interviews with early biotech players, sally smith hughes offers the first book-length history of this pioneering company, depicting genentech’s improbable creation, precarious youth, and ascent to immense prosperity. hughes provides intimate portraits of the people significant to genentech’s science and business, including cofounders herbert boyer and robert swanson, and in doing so sheds new light on how personality affects the growth of science. by placing genentech’s founders, followers, opponents, victims, and beneficiaries in context, hughes also demonstrates how science interacts with commercial and legal interests and university research, and with government regulation, venture capital, and commercial profits. integrating the scientific, the corporate, the contextual, and the personal, genentech tells the story of biotechnology as it is not often told, as a risky and improbable entrepreneurial venture that had to overcome a number of powerful forces working against it.
