I found this book a great resource for understanding and helping a loved one with BPD. Originally I checked it out of the local library, but quickly found the information provided would be a good addition to my personal library and decided to order this book. Easy to read and understand. Author has a sister who most likely had BPD, so his passion to help people and family is from first hand concern and desire to truly help. Also interesting that a low dose of antipsychotic medication worked to help control emotions and impulsive behavior so that BPD persons could benefit from therapy to change their perceptions and responses for better quality of life.mmcconnell88

BPD is a mystery to many of us, even clinicians. Still, BPD is more common than schizophrenia and twice as common as anorexia nervosa. Compared to the general public, a person with BPD is 400 times more at risk for suicide. BPD is a serious condition that is often misunderstood, misdiagnosed and overlooked. Families of individuals with BPD may be at their wits end, trying to figure out how to live with someone whose emotions resemble a rollercoaster. Not only does this book provide sheer comfort and empathy to families who feel frustrated, lost, alone, powerless and defeated, but it offers a wealth of information that helps loved ones better understand the disorder and start to lead healthier, happier lives themselves. Absolutely amazing book, it has all of the information of 'I hate you, don't leave me' but also includes additional information Including action steps for certain behaviours snd symptoms. This book contains a wealth of information without being too technical and too hard to get through, it features case studies so that you can get a better sense of how the borderline struggles and how their disorder manifests itself in different ways. If you have borderline personality disorder or suspect you could have a borderline personality this book will give you an incredible insight into why you feel and act the way you do and gives you the basic tools for examining your own emotions and behaviours and identifying where these things become disordered. If you do not have BPD but you have a loved one who does, this book will help you understand and cope with borderline behaviours. This book does not excuse any disordered behaviour but instead examines why it's happening. I've got a copy for myself, my mother has a copy which I bought her to help her understand how I was feeling and I have bought one for my friend who also suffers with BPD who was over the moon with it. I really really hope whoevers reading this decides to purchase this book. This was a really great read offering a simplistic understanding to BPD. The authenticity of the writers opens readers up to a truly empathetic perspective on the disorder. Some of the contributors are quite eloquent in their writing which adds an additional pleasing element to the book. The very sincere and raw accounts that the contributors provided offer a substantiated degree of hope for those on their BPD healing journey, as well as an insiders perspective to someone who has a loved one that suffers with BPD. Excellent guide! I am the daughter of a woman who has Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD). For years, the frustration, anger, sadness, of what I suffered through and was subjected to, affected me in all areas of my life. There were dark, depressive mental clouds that followed me no matter where I was. I tried to fix things my own way, but nothing worked, so the relationship and myself continued to deteriorate into horrific depths of the unwell. After reading books written by Dr. Lobel, including his latest one, "When a Loved One Has Borderline Personality Disorder", I’ve gained the clarity through the fog which I had been missing. This latest book is an incredible guide, almost like a pocket-therapist in some aspects for me. Knowing the signs, and the corrective action that I needed to implement if I wanted my relationship with my mother to continue and move forward, have been of immeasurable value. I am glad to say that the relationship has improved because of this.
