Great introduction to buddhist themes and practice – specifically Nichiren Buddhism as practised by the lay organisation Soka Gakkai (society for value creation.) For those wanting practical spiritual guidance and a practise that can be used to overcome challenges in everyday life, I recommend reading this introductory book. It becomes clear that a commitment to seeking and praising our highest wisdom is also the cause to reveal it.Kareim J.

A gift for my mother, she found this book enlightening- renewing her inspiration to be a better Buddhist. Personally, since I love studying all religions, I found this book equally informative as it was enlightening. Amzing insights and I'm not even done with the first chapter yet! Already I am reexamining my life and forming the intention to dedicate the rest of it to the things that really matter. Yeah…it's that good!karycortan0
Exceptional book if you are ready for it, and that is the core issue. It offers a significant insight into a reality few are aware of and even fewer can accept. In introducing you to the deeper philosophy of Buddhism the author also links it with the various traditions and sects that offer a wide spectrum of views on the most subtle aspects. You don't have to read it all because there is much that enables you to understand how to live a life in harmony with all that is. The specific focus on dying and the means to ensure your continued journey would need far more support than the book alone can give you, but it does explain the process. I have personally found that reading it has helped me attune more to peaceful living, and appreciate the stages of dying that allow a peaceful transition. I do not feel I am yet in any state to make the ultimate steps however, and am content to allow myself the freedom to chose when and if I might be ready.rexb1444

6. The Buddhist Psychology Of Awakening: An In-Depth Guide To Abhidharma [Book]

Product Details:
"from the introduction: it was written primarily for those who have or might develop an interest in the very basic buddhist teachings associated with what tibetan traditions call the "first turning" of the wheel of the dharma. here is grouped teachings on proper conduct (vinaya) and discourses (sutras) and commentaries (shastras) on basic teachings which came to be gathered together under the rubric of higher dharma (abhidharma). the teachings on higher dharma have, to date, are, for the most part, rather technical, consisting of main points and enumerated lists of basic factors (dharmas) of phenomena mentioned in the buddha sutras. there is a rich codification of such teachings preserved in the pali language, and thereafter in the theravadin abhidhamma literature. in addition, there are a different set of texts used by the living traditions associated with indo-tibetan buddhist lineages, preserved in sanskrit (and, also in translation into tibetan, chinese and mongolian languages). it is the indo-tibetan traditions which are explored in this book. i have chosen to give an account, an approach which strives to bring out a lively, relevant and novel way to apply some of the key approaches of the higher dharma to a contemporary non-specialist readership"–
Reviews:
After many attempts to digest earlier translations of the Abhidarma I have thoroughly enjoyed Steven Goodman's version of this ancient text. Warm, conversational and peppered with modern analogies "The Buddhist Psychology of Awakening" has been a strong stimulus to continuing my journey along a Buddhists life journey.Dr Bob

Reviews:
This book is essential for anyone who wishes life could be better. What a surprise…it actually is! The author very simply describes what can be a complicated concept of an individual's perception creating their reality…that is, finding peace in your heart in the midst of ordinary life. Some people pay for illegal drugs, or pursue any number of other dead-ends to achieve some contentedness in life, but all along had the wrong perception of just what is really important. And it's not rocket science either. It's very easy to read, and I wish I'd read it thirty years ago. Better late then never. Although the author is a zen monk this book has nothing to do with religion, and everything to do with happiness. Please read it.1ginther
Mindfulness is one of the most important practices needed in order to live a calm, peaceful and happy life. A book like this is a gift, and being able to master Mindfulness is priceless – truly a miracle!bethavra

8. The Buddha's Teachings On Social And Communal Harmony: An Anthology Of Discourses From The Pali Canon [Book]

Product Details:
In this volume acclaimed scholar-monk bhikkhu bodhi has collected and translated the buddha’s teachings on conflict resolution, interpersonal and social problem-solving, and the forging of harmonious relationships. the selections, all drawn from the pali canon, the earliest record of the buddha’s discourses, are organized into ten thematic chapters. the chapters deal with such topics as the quelling of anger, good friendship, intentional communities, the settlement of disputes, and the establishing of an equitable society. each chapter begins with a concise and informative introduction by the translator that guides us toward a deeper understanding of the texts that follow. in times of social conflict, intolerance, and war, the buddha’s approach to creating and sustaining peace takes on a new and urgent significance. even readers unacquainted with buddhism will appreciate these ancient teachings, always clear, practical, undogmatic, and so contemporary in flavor. the buddha’s teachings on social and communal harmony will prove to be essential reading for anyone seeking to bring peace into their communities and into the wider world.
Reviews:
Ven. Bhikkhu Bodhi (an American Buddhist monk) illuminates the Dharma to westerners. We can be grateful for his many Dharma efforts.plentyzero
First of all, you don't need to be buddhist to gain something from this book. Second, there are a few parts near the end that deal with monastic life (monks) but as stated in the book can mostly be applied to the average life. I didn't start with texts like this. I started straight with the Pali Suttas no problem. I was purchasing the english translations from Target and decided to grab this book to read when I have short free periods. I wouldn't let reading the suttas straight-up scare you if you intend to study buddhism but for new folks potentially interested in buddhism and older alike, this is a great book. Each section is has it's own introduction. The introduction gives some background/explanation of the suttas that will follow in the pages to follow as well as Bhikku Bodhi's own insight on the matters when applicable. I mention "Morality" in my headline title. How can you have social or communal harmony without morality? You can't. From newcomers to buddhism the things I see most often are questions such as "how do I deal with X in life?", "how do I respond when [name] does Y to me?", "how do I handle this feeling?" and alike. Those are properly addressed without having to dig through the massive sutta collections to find what you're looking for. It has a special section on anger in itself which makes sense as it's one of the easiest emotions to give way to and can cause the most problems. Not just crazy anger however, even subtle. It's a good read for what you pay, especially for those just wanting to get an idea of some buddhist ideals and not focusing on meditation or alike. This book truly focuses on what it's title implies. Best Wishes.JA
A great book, great price an excellent readleshaddon
9. The Tibetan Book Of The Dead: First Complete Translation [Book]

Product Details:
One of the greatest works created by any culture and overwhelmingly the most significant of all tibetan buddhist texts in the west, the tibetan book of the dead has had a number of distinguished translations, but none encompassed the work in its entirety. now, in one of the year's most important publishing events, the entire text has not only been made available in english but in a translation of quite remarkable clarity and beauty.with an introductory commentary by his holiness the dalai lama, who calls this translation "an extraordinary accomplishment undertaken with great care over many years" this complete edition faithfully presents the insights and intentions of the original work. it includes one of the most detailed and compelling descriptions of the after-death state in world literature, exquisitely written practices that can transform our experience of daily life, guidance on helping those who are dying, and an inspirational perspective on coping with bereavement. translated with the close support of leading contemporary masters, including hh dilgo khyentse rinpoche, and learned scholars such as khamtrul rinpoche and zenkar rinpoche, his holiness the dalai lama says, "i hope that the profound insights contained in this work will be a source of inspiration and support to many interested people around the world."

10. The Lotus Sutra: A Contemporary Translation Of A Buddhist Classic [Book]
Product Details:
The lotus sutra is regarded as one of the world's great religious scriptures and most influential texts. it's a seminal work in the development of buddhism throughout east asia and, by extension, in the development of mahayana buddhism throughout the world. taking place in a vast and fantastical cosmic setting, the lotus sutra places emphasis on skillfully doing whatever is needed to serve and compassionately care for others, on breaking down distinctions between the fully enlightened buddha and the bodhisattva who vows to postpone salvation until all beings may share it, and especially on each and every being's innate capacity to become a buddha.gene reeves's new translation appeals to readers with little or no familiarity with technical buddhist vocabulary, as well as long-time practitioners and students. in addition, this remarkable volume includes the full "threefold" text of this classic.
Reviews:
A very interesting translation of the Buddhist classic – The Lotus Sutra. It is most difficult to uderstand, most difficult to believe. Through Reeves' eyes the sutra takes on a new shine, as such, it reflects a more scholastic interpretation of the abtruce meaning(s) of the Sutra. Contrast sharply with that of Burton Watson classic work. Suffice it to say it is a close match for Kumarajiva's 5 century work (from Sanskrit to Chinese). Well done professor Reeves. The appendix is also an informative revelation of time lines and obtuse explanation of many deities (Buddhist or Hindu or otherwise) Well worth a read. The book also covers the sine qua non threefold Lotus Sutra. To include the prologue (Unlimited meaning Sutra) The Lotus Sutra proper and the Sutra of Bodhisattva Universal worth (epilogue). A must read for all interesting to know more about this Classic.x511
11. The Gateless Gate: The Classic Book Of Zen Koans [Book]

Product Details:
In the gateless gate, one of modern zen buddhism's uniquely influential masters offers classic commentaries on the mumonkan, one of zen's greatest collections of teaching stories. this translation was compiled with the western reader in mind, and includes koan yamada's clear and penetrating comments on each case. yamada played a seminal role in bringing zen buddhism to the west from japan, going on to be the head of the sanbo kyodan zen community.the gateless gate would be invaluable if only for the translation and commentary alone, yet it's loaded with extra material and is a fantastic resource to keep close by: an in-depth introduction to the history of zen practice lineage charts japanese-to-chinese and chinese-to-japanese conversion charts for personal names, place names, and names of writings plus front- and back-matter from ancient and modern figures: mumon, shuan, kubota ji'un, taizan maezumi, hugo enomiya-lasalle, and yamada roshi's son, masamichi yamada. a wonderful inspiration for the koan practitioner, and for those with a general interest in zen buddhism.
Reviews:
It's a great book for anyone. I would recommend it to anyone. This book is fantastic. It keeps you interested and captivated. Whether it be for yourself or others, it's a must have. I hope you will like this book just as much as me. It is definitely worth buying. If you are looking for a good book then this is it. Perfect.
Timeless book of Zen Koans. Think if a tree falls in the forest and no one is around to hear it, does it make a sound or what is the sound of one hand clapping – only more complex and thought provoking. The added commentary in this edition helps give both background and interpretation to the Koans, while still leaving the ultimate solution and potential spiritual fulfillment to the reader.njsports

12. A Buddhist Bible: History Of Early Zen Buddhism, Self-Realisation Of Noble Wisdom, The Diamond Sutra, The Prajna Paramita Sutra, The Sutra Of The Sixth Patriarch [Book]

Product Details:
This used book is in very good condition. buddhism is a religion and philosophy encompassing a variety of traditions, beliefs and practices, largely based on teachings attributed to siddhartha gautama, commonly known as the buddha (pali/sanskrit "the awakened one"). the buddha lived and taught in the northeastern indian subcontinent some time between the 6th and 4th centuries bce. he is recognized by buddhists as an awakened or enlightened teacher who shared his insights to help sentient beings end suffering (or dukkha), achieve nirvana, and escape what is seen as a cycle of suffering and rebirth. two major branches of buddhism are recognized: theravada ("the school of the elders") and mahayana ("the great vehicle"). theravada-the oldest surviving branch-has a widespread following in sri lanka and southeast asia. mahayana is found throughout east asia and includes the traditions of pure land, zen, nichiren buddhism, tibetan buddhism, shingon, tendai and shinnyo-en. in some classifications vajrayana-a subcategory of mahayana practiced in tibet and mongolia-is recognized as a third branch. while buddhism remains most popular within asia, both branches are now found throughout the world. estimates of buddhists worldwide vary significantly depending on the way buddhist adherence is defined. lower estimates are between 350-500 million. buddhist schools vary on the exact nature of the path to liberation, the importance and canonicity of various teachings and scriptures, and especially their respective practices. the foundations of buddhist tradition and practice are the three jewels: the buddha, the dharma (the teachings), and the sangha (the community). taking "refuge in the triple gem" has traditionally been a declaration and commitment to being on the buddhist path and in general distinguishes a buddhist from a non-buddhist. other practices may include following ethical precepts, support of the monastic community, renouncing conventional living and becoming a monastic, the development of mindfulness and practice of meditation, cultivation of higher wisdom and discernment, study of scriptures, devotional practices, ceremonies, and in the mahayana tradition, invocation of buddhas and bodhisattvas. by forgotten books [ 9781605061047 ]

I find this book tough reading, I have read several of HH Dalai Lamas books and attend a temple each week. So I thought I was ready to learn more of the Sutra. However, I have found this book to be quite dry and difficult reading since it is relating stories I am not familiar with in a format I am not used to. I am determined to finish it but I think this book may be best consumed over time as my practice deepens.6277scottparker2010
I am very happy with the book although looking at the book in the picture I thought it was an old book but it's a new book. Don't get me wrong that's a good thing but I wan looking for an older book. I would still recommend this book though if it's old or new.lynmarshal8

14. Waking Up To What You Do: A Zen Practice For Meeting Every Situation With Intelligence And Compassion [Book]
Product Details:
This zen buddhist guide to mindful living is “a thoughtful, sensitive examination of how to be a genuinely good person in this world” (sharon salzlberg, author of lovingkindness) life is rising up to meet us at every moment. it’s a simple practice with transformative potential, enabling us to break through our habitual reactions and to see clearly how our own happiness and well-being are intimately, inevitably connected to the happiness and well-being of everyone around us.
Reviews:
This is not the first book I have read on the Zen precepts. It is the only one that speaks of them in practical everyday terms. The author speaks them in her own words while respecting the traditional message. She ranks them by relevance in today's world and culture. My life has changed for the better as a result of reading and practicing. Highly recommended for the student.alancansalesbest

Reviews:
A really interesting book. Jon Kabat-Zinn is a well established teacher of Mindfulness. I would say that the book would be of most benefit to those new to Mindfulness practice, rather than those looking to further develop their practice. His take on Mindfulness tends to be very 'westernized' and I do to a point agree with the previous review that there are a number of books out there that explain Mindfulness in a simpler way. However, many books do tend to focus on discussing Mindfulness without giving any detailed direction as to how to put it into practice. This book does provide lots of guidance. You may also want to take a look at 'Mindfulness Plain & Simple' written by Oli Doyle, which I feel is an excellent 'starter book' for introduction into Mindfulness.
I have several books on mindfulness and Buddhism and really enjoy reading about these subjects. But I'm afraid I really struggled with this book . I've just finished reading it and found it a huge struggle .. I had to read and re-read passages over and over again to try to understand their meaning . I never give up on a book but feel I gained nothing from this one. I found it difficult to understand mainly because it was so repetitive and never quite got to the point . There are better books to enjoy on this subject which are more straightforward and more of a pleasure to read in my opinion.
I have owned this book for years And I have enjoyed reading it more than once. This copy I bought for a friends birthday coming up in June. Even though we have different interests and backgrounds we enjoy reading what the other one finds interesting to better know one another. I feel more people should do this.triton28

Reviews:
This is my first book of JKZ and although I liked it, I thought it could have had more deep info in it. It is more elementary level meditation book, but well done. He has a great voice and is easy to understand.oceanlady999
This is the best. I had this CD before and loaned it to someone and never saw it again. I really enjoy listening to Jon Kabat-Zinn. Every time I listen to it something else comes to light. I highly recommend spending some quiet listening to Jon.sherylb215
Bought this CD for my husband (who has read ALL of Jon Kabat-Zinn's books) but I have listened to it many times myself. It is a great entry-level meditation book; perfect for a beginner (which I am!). Kabat-Zinn's clear explanations of mindfulness are easy to understand and follow. His calm and soothing voice makes it an enjoyable experience.joaniee123
