Good. The board and pieces have a size as a usual and easily accommodating. The pieces are nicely cut bit are very lightweight so they fall easily away. One could try to insert a lead ball into each bottom. Can you make it heavier-Stephan

5. Mastering The Chess Openings: Unlocking The Mysteries Of The Modern Chess Openings [Book]

Product Details:
For many chess-players, opening study is sheer hard work. it is difficult to know what is important and what is not, and when specific knowledge is vital, or when a more general understanding is sufficient. tragically often, once the opening is over, a player won't know what plan to follow, or even understand why his pieces are on the squares on which they sit. – john watson seeks to help chess-players achieve a more holistic and insightful view of the openings. in his previous books on chess strategy, secrets of modern chess strategy and chess strategy in action, he explained vital concepts that characterize modern chess. moreover, he did so in ways that have enabled these ideas to be understood by club players. here he does likewise for the openings, proceeding from the fundamental ideas that apply to all openings to more advanced concepts that are essential for substantial improvement. – in this major four-volume work, watson explains not only the ideas and strategies behind specific openings, but also the interconnections of chess openings taken as a whole. by presenting the common threads that underlie opening play, watson provides a permanent basis for playing openings of any type. – this second volume focuses on queen's pawn openings, exploring such openings as the nimzo-indian, king's indian and the entire queen's gambit complex, and the characteristic structures to which they lead. – international master john watson is one of the world's most respected writers on chess. his groundbreaking four-volume work on the english opening firmly established his reputation in the 1980s, and he has produced a string of top-quality works since. in 1999, secrets of modern chess strategy, watson's first book for gambit, won the british chess federation book of the year award and the united states chess federation fred cramer award for best book. his former pupils include the 1997 world junior champion, tal shaked.

7. A Cunning Chess Opening Repertoire For White [Book]

Product Details:
A good opening repertoire need not require an enormous amount of study to be highly effective. in this book, highly experienced chess opening writer graham burgess presents a repertoire based on 1 d4 and nf3 with precisely those aims. black’s possibilities for counterplay – and sharp gambit play – are kept to a minimum. our aim is to give black exactly the type of position he doesn’t want. simplifications? gambits? the main cornerstones of the repertoire are carefully chosen queen’s gambit lines, the torre attack (vs …e6), and a variety of fianchetto options against the king’s indian and related set-ups. white’s position is kept highly flexible, with many possible transpositions to a wide variety of systems that the reader can use to extend and vary the repertoire. the book features a wealth of new ideas and original analysis. fide master graham burgess is gambit’s editorial director, and one of the founders of the company. he holds the world record for marathon blitz chess playing, and lives in minnesota. this is his 23rd chess book.
Reviews:
Whilst this book has a lot to offer the club player looking to build a repertoire with 1 d4 the task of covering black's many responses within 254 pages does mean that you could be on your own within the first dozen or so moves. In saying this the author has selected his repertoire carefully so whilst he may not cover all eventualities the openings he suggests are sound and reliable and therefore studying this book should enable the club player to navigate the opening phase of the game reasonably successfully. Unlike some queens pawn books that tend to prescribe a fixed white formation regardless of what black plays this book looks at, the Queens Gambit, Slav, Kings Indian, Grunfeld, Torre and anti- Benoni lines which can help to improve ones understanding of positions arising from 1 d4.
8. A Simple Chess Opening Repertoire For White [Book]

Product Details:
By carefully choosing variations that lead to similar structures, im sam collins has put together a powerful repertoire book ideal for players with limited study time. white opens with 1 e4 and develops his pieces to natural squares, seeking open lines and the initiative. the dominant theme of this sound and active repertoire is that – where reasonable – white seeks out isolated queen pawn (iqp) positions: i.e. with the c3 sicilian, panov caro-kann, tarrasch french, and the italian game with early c3 and d4. there are no speculative gambits here, just plenty of healthy aggression and new ideas. because so many of collins's recommendations lead to familiar structures, ideas can easily be transplanted from one opening to another. he gives illustrative games that emphasize the key themes, including white's many opportunities to forcibly weaken and attack the black king. the specific analysis is up-to-the-minute and features ideas that have proven their worth in grandmaster practice. throughout there is attention to move-order subtleties, with clever nuances in 'sidelines' that your opponents are unlikely to have examined in detail. irish international master sam collins won the championship of his home country in 2002 and 2014. he has represented ireland in numerous olympiads, winning an individual gold medal at bled in 2002. he is also an experienced chess teacher who has lectured at the berkeley chess school in california. his previous books for gambit were chess explained: the c3 sicilian and the highly successful general opening work understanding the chess openings.
9. Zuke 'em-The Colle Zukertort Revolutionized: A Chess Opening System For Everyone, Now Bullet-Proofed With New Ideas [Book]

Product Details:
This is the 2015 edition of rudel's acclaimed queen's pawn game work, with over 50 pages of cutting edge material. it boasts a completely new tack against the slav and addressed an annoying drawing line from the reversed queen's indian. this 2015 edition still includes the revolutionary phoenix attack for the colle-zukertort proper, first introduced with extensive commentary by rudel in 2011. this attack promises to be the future mainline for the colle-zukertort (a.k.a. the rubinstein attack). for decades, the chess world has run down the reputation of the c-z as an unassuming opening, claiming it did not exact the full measure of pain from black in the quest to equalize. if such is the case, why do strong players (as black) avoid the zukertort? instead they opt to play any of several pet defenses rather than deal with the constriction and onslaught of the main line. in zuke 'em: the colle-system revolutionzed, rudel explains the basics of the zukertort and then provided plenty of new ideas to address these various pet defenses that cowardly opponents may choose. in this book you will also find: 1. introductory chapters for those who would not know the zukertort from a lemon torte. 2. analysis in real english from the perspective of someone who has played the opening exclusively for over a decade. 3. a barrage of never-before-published answers and extensive commentary on common lines. 4.

11. Chess Openings Theory And Practice [Book]

Product Details:
"speaking for myself and for players of my strength, chess openings: theory and practice is the greatest aid i have ever seen for preparing for a tournament. speaking for all other players, the book is a "must." current thinking on all important lines is meticulously presented, offering myriad, clear-cut ideas a completely new and effective arsenal of weapons. "-samuel reshevsky, united states open champion." chess openings theory and practice is a remarkable book, unequaled by any book of that era or since. it is not a mere openings book with long columns of moves followed at the end by punctuation marks such as + — or =. it presents opening ideas and games, often including the first game where each opening was played, plus the history of the opening, the names of famous players who played this opening and the ideas and plans on which the opening is based. it provides "idea variations." these are variations that may not actually occur in actual practice, but are what you would play if given the chance. no other book does that, at least not in english and not to this extent.

Absolutely the best reference and practice resource since finding out that the queen (a few centuries ago) could move more than one space in any direction. Bought my first in the 60"s, lost it in 2012 to a chess enthusiast that didn't understand return by the end of the month….and just now got it replaced. Same book with different preface and still just as good of a practice reference . I highly recommend this book.Stephen
Every chess player should have a copy of this book. It lists all the openings and gives a thorough discussion of ways of dealing with them plus examples of various theoretical possibilities. There are also examples of games played by the masters showing how they dealt with them. There are two problems however that some people might find annoying. First, it's written in the old chess notation (not algebraic) and, secondly, it is a fragile book. It would be nice to have a spiral bound edition in algebraic notation.moosedog0

14. Chess Openings: Traps And Zaps [Book]

Product Details:
In the first completely instructional book ever written on chess openings, national master and game strategist for netflix’s the queen’s gambit bruce pandolfini teaches players how to take charge of the game's crucial opening phase.of the three traditional phases of chess play—the opening, the middle-game and the endgame—the opening is the phase average players confront most often. unfortunately, though, many openings are not completed successfully, partly because until now most opening instruction has consisted of tables of tournament level moves that offer no explanations for the reasons behind them. consequently, these classical opening patterns can serve as little more than references to the average player. in chess openings: traps and zaps, bruce pandolfini uses his unique "crime and punishment" approach to provide all the previously missing explanation, instruction, practical analyses, and much, much more. the book consists of 202 short "openers" typical of average players, arranged according to the classical opening variations and by level of difficulty. each example includes: -the name of the overriding tactic -the name of the opening -a scenario that sets up the tactic to be learned -an interpretation that explains why the loser went wrong, how he could have avoided the trap, and what he should have done instead -a review of important principles and useful guidelines to reinforce each lesson also included are a glossary of openings that lists all the classical "textbook" variations for comparison and reference and a tactical index. chess openings: traps and zaps is a powerful, pragmatic entry into a heretofore remote area of chess theory that will have a profound influence on every player's game.
Reviews:
This book contains an indepth analysis of opening strategies labeled by name. It also has a move by move breakdown of the opening moves and various options through checkmate for each example. I would recommend this book as a stretegy tutorial for the chess club member wanting to improve his opening play. Reviews:
This is a standard reference book that every moderately serious chess player should have. I try to buy copies of the book that are in excellent condition whenever I find them at a good price on eBay or Amazon, to give away as prizes to my elementary school chess club members. This is not the latest edition, so it is usually available at a deeply discounted price. A 700-year-old game does not change from year to year, so a previous edition like this is an excellent choice for anyone who is cost conscious.jerry.isaacs

Product Details:
With this book, all one needs to know are the fundamental rules of chess and ordinary chess notation in order to gain a thorough understanding of the all-important opening game in its many variations. simply, clearly, and with keen appreciation of the amateur's usual limitations, international grandmaster znosko-borovsky explains the importance of rapid development of the pieces, occupation of the center, the relation of the opening to the general plan of the player, and the significance of control of the center.each major opening is then detailed and analyzed with the emphasis on explanation that is easy to follow. special attention is paid to traps — both the mistakes often made by amateurs, and the classic traps, such as greco's and tarrasch's. "chess is a game of understanding and not of memory," says znosko-borovsky, and he promotes the reader's understanding of the openings by discussing purpose and plan frequently, as against memorization of moves. those acquainted with znosko-borovsky's other books, how not to play chess and the art of chess combination will rediscover in this book znosko-borovsky's unique clarity, ease of style, and profundity." in the teaching of chess he may claim to have no superior." — philip w. sergeant.
