It would be best if the reader knew the moves and the basic moves, but it is written well and it is easy to understand. I have hundreds of chess books that I use for reference, to check my own openings, keep my mind sharp and to teach my K-8 chess students. To learn or teach it is necessary to practice the ideas being studied in order to see their practical application to the games we play. A mate in 2 may have a nice idea (say remove the protection), but if you don't see it in your own games it is of little practical value. The hard part in seeing them in your own play is priming the mind to be ready for them. This is why a young child may be very good at solving chess problems but miss the same idea when it appears in his games. With a chess problem, the mind is primed with the knowledge that an answer (mate in 2) is available. In a chess game most positions you face have no such readily available answer. This book helps prime the mind for the playing experience by presenting the position as if it is from a real game. Ideas are mixed with common play. Sometimes there is a wild sacrifice that wins, sometimes there is a blunder check where the correct move is NOT playing a tempting sacrifice. This book is a great tool for players who have already been taught all the basic tactics and combinations. It teaches how to find the tactics and to check to be sure they work. The times when there is nothing special in the position (called blunder checks) keeps the student honest in his evaluations. This is probably the easiest way to learn chess and learn to play it well. The book takes a moment to get used to because Bobby Fischer did not like the idea of flipping pages back and forth or breaking the book spine by folding it to read the opposite page. Instead he wrote the book entirely on the right side as if it were single sided. Then, halfway through, the book flips ovr and continues the same way back to the page that was on back of the first page, which is now the last page of the book. It is really quite logical, and his methods as displayed herein are even more logical. It will bring out the best in you if you actually work it from beginning to end. This is an interactive book, meant to be read with a board and pieces in front of you. In its absence, the illustrations cover it well, but you will learn faster and better by actually moving the pieces.don536

There also appears to be few errors. Most of the problems are quite solvable, however, some of them require some deeper thought. The answers often give the complete remainder of the game, which was welcome. And just in case one is not satisfied, checking the position with the computer is always an option. I really trust this book as it has helped me to win several games. The author will give a key game with a daring or sneaky trick in it. This often works especially with online games but if the opponent is prepared no worries. There are other games in the book to back up the major trick, so if it does not work it is pointed out how the the reader should form a plan and make progress. This is a very readable, up-to-date chess opening manual. It is not as comprehensive as Modern Chess Openings 15, but it gives much more in the way of assessment of the moves and the resulting positions. I have the first three volumes, all that are available until 2010, and they are all of consistent professional quality.wscott336

A great book! This is a very good book for a beginner or novice it begins explaining all the rules of the game and how pieces move around the board. In later chapters more advanced topics are discussed including best opening for beginners, checkmate patterns and tactics. There are also many exercises to practice throughout the book.I remember buying this book over 20 years ago, couldn't put it down, I absolutely devoured it, eventually it fell apart!
