Reviews:
Excellent selection of practical chess positions/problems to study. Also was highly recommended by a very notable chess writer & chess book reviewer.rwoodman40
I really like the fact that the solutions are on the facing page, so I don't have to thumb to the back of the book. I also liked the variety of problems, not just mates or winning material but positional problems as well.greenmagma88
I have hundreds of chess books that I use for reference, to check my own openings, keep my mind sharp and to teach my K-8 chess students. To learn or teach it is necessary to practice the ideas being studied in order to see their practical application to the games we play. A mate in 2 may have a nice idea (say remove the protection), but if you don't see it in your own games it is of little practical value. The hard part in seeing them in your own play is priming the mind to be ready for them. This is why a young child may be very good at solving chess problems but miss the same idea when it appears in his games. With a chess problem, the mind is primed with the knowledge that an answer (mate in 2) is available. In a chess game most positions you face have no such readily available answer. This book helps prime the mind for the playing experience by presenting the position as if it is from a real game. Ideas are mixed with common play. Sometimes there is a wild sacrifice that wins, sometimes there is a blunder check where the correct move is NOT playing a tempting sacrifice. This book is a great tool for players who have already been taught all the basic tactics and combinations. It teaches how to find the tactics and to check to be sure they work. The times when there is nothing special in the position (called blunder checks) keeps the student honest in his evaluations. The only way I would improve this book would be to add a CD with PGN files so the problems could be presented on the computer. I recommend it to coaches and student alike. – Murrelmurrel

Reviews:
The is the best beginner chess book ever written. As a kid growing up in the 70s, I remember Bobby Fischer as a cultural icon, similar to Secretariat. I bought this book when I wanted to refresh and begin playing chess again. It all came flooding back to me. Time tested learning application. Great book!!!afz102709
This is probably the easiest way to learn chess and learn to play it well. The book takes a moment to get used to because Bobby Fischer did not like the idea of flipping pages back and forth or breaking the book spine by folding it to read the opposite page. Instead he wrote the book entirely on the right side as if it were single sided. Then, halfway through, the book flips ovr and continues the same way back to the page that was on back of the first page, which is now the last page of the book. It is really quite logical, and his methods as displayed herein are even more logical. It will bring out the best in you if you actually work it from beginning to end. This is an interactive book, meant to be read with a board and pieces in front of you. In its absence, the illustrations cover it well, but you will learn faster and better by actually moving the pieces.don536
If you have not done a ton of research on chess books and are just looking to purchase some based on the players, this book was not actually written by Bobby Fischer. With that being said, I bought this book as a gift and it seems good to have on the shelf. There's a lot of puzzles to solve with some analysis. Good for beginners especially.Andrea

11. Modern Chess Strategy [Book]

Product Details:
Every chess player hopes to set off brilliant combinations and win games in a blaze of glory. such combinations do not come into being by themselves, however; they appear only as the result of proper chess strategy. it is therefore surprising that so few books deal with this highly important subject, and understandable that pachman's modern classic has been so enthusiastically received by chessplayers at all levels.ludĕk pachman, a czech grandmaster, has long had an international reputation as a chess theorist, but until now his work has not been available in english. this present volume, which condenses his great modern schachstrategie, presents his ideas and theories in a form that the english-speaking world can assimilate easily. beginning with basic concepts and the rules of the minor and major pieces, it covers the use of the queen, the active king, exchanges, various kinds of pawns, the center and its use, superiority on the wings, minority attack, strategical points and weak squares, methods of attack and defense, and similar topics. pachman elaborates the various kinds of strategy that can be employed, and shows how each leads to tactical opportunities. it has been said that his section on the rook alone make his book indispensable to the serious chess player, since the rook is so important in both middle and endgames.pachman presents his method in the form of a thorough, systematic, analytical text, which draws upon scores of great games for exemplification. both classical and very recent masters are included, although stress is on the moderns: capablanca, alekhine, dr. lasker, rubinstein, nimzovich, botvinnik, reshevsky, bronstein, smyslov, and spasski.

12. Elements Of Chess Strategy [Book]

Product Details:
Forming a plan is the most important goal of logical chess thought. however, few chess-players – even those fortunate enough to have a trainer – develop a disciplined approach to planning. in this book, one of the world's leading chess teachers provides step-by-step guidelines for identifying the features of a position onto which our strategy should be latched. he adopts a thoroughly modern approach, recognizing that the opponent will have his own plans and be attempting to disrupt ours. the effectiveness of kosikov's methods – in particular the steps algorithm – is shown by his pupils' over-the-board proficiency. having presented the basics of orderly strategic thinking, kosikov shows them at work in a variety of middlegame and endgame situations, especially the strategic minefield of minor-piece play. examples are taken from both classic games and modern grandmaster play, together with instructive moments from games by the author's pupils.

13. Simple Chess [Book]
Product Details:
Written by a young grand master, this introduction to chess strategy is aimed primarily at players for whom a game plan is utterly enigmatic. by isolating the basic elements and illustrating them through a selection of master and grand master games, simple chess breaks down the mystique of strategy into plain, easy-to-understand ideas — only a knowledge of basic chess terminology is assumed.more than a lesson in chess fundamentals, this book illustrates an increasingly prevalent and successful style of play — a method that begins by slowly accumulating small but permanent advantages, saving the outright attack for later in the game. newly converted into the current algebraic chess notation, this edition of simple chess offers a strategic weapon for players at every level of expertise.

14. Learn Chess Tactics [Book]

Product Details:
Once a chess-player has learnt the basic rules of the game, the next step is to study tactics. a knowledge of tactics will enable a novice to start winning games by giving checkmate or taking his opponent's pieces. as the player progresses, his tactical arsenal will broaden and he will start to play sacrifices and combinations. improving your tactical ability is the most efficient way to win more games and gain confidence at the chessboard. – given the fundamental importance of chess tactics, there are surprisingly few books that teach the subject in a systematic way. consequently, many players suffer from tactical blind-spots that plague them throughout their career. the step-by-step approach used in this book ensures that each concept is explained and tested before the next one is introduced. – john nunn is a renowned grandmaster noted for his devastating tactical ability. in this book, he guides the reader to an understanding of key tactical ideas such as the fork, pin, and discovered attack, and discusses general ideas such as elimination and compulsion. no prior knowledge is assumed apart from the basic rules of chess. – throughout the book there are carefully graded exercises to test the reader's understanding. – dr john nunn is a grandmaster from england. he has won four individual gold medals and three team silver medals at chess olympiads. in the chess world cup of 1988/9, he finished sixth overall, ahead of several former world champions. he is arguably the most highly acclaimed chess writer in the world, with three of his books receiving the prestigious british chess federation book of the year award.
Reviews:
A must for any chess player…eastmolinecathy
This book is a nice course on chess tactics, with explanations and problems to solve. In my opinion it is aimed for, say, players rated below FIDE 2000 in terms of difficulty. There also appears to be few errors. Most of the problems are quite solvable, however, some of them require some deeper thought. The answers often give the complete remainder of the game, which was welcome. And just in case one is not satisfied, checking the position with the computer is always an option. I am satisfied with this book, which will reward ample study.iki_kr_qypjbybsy
