2. The Three Apologies Of G.k. Chesterton: Heretics, Orthodoxy & The Everlasting Man [Book]

Product Details:
Gilbert keith chesterton has become synonymous with modern christian apologetics. but his impact goes beyond just those interested in a defense of christian thought. his writings have influenced such diverse authors as c.s. lewis, marshall mc – luhan, and jorge luis borges, and remains a subtle and unseen presence in contemporary catholic thought. before his conversion from atheism to knowing god, c.s. lewis, the author of mere christianity & the great divorce, said "in reading chesterton, as in reading mac – donald, i did not know what i was letting myself in for. a young man who wishes to remain a sound atheist cannot be too careful of his reading. there are traps everywhere –"chesterton wrote in a time when materialism and new forms of political theory were soon to cause havoc in the western world. his was a voice calling for restraint – pointing back to the fundamentals of christian doctrine, the purpose and value of which was being lost in the noise and commotion of the post industrial age. describing the rush towards less familiar and attractive ideologies, chesterton wrote: "in the matter of reforming things, as distinct from deforming them, there is one plain and simple principle; a principle which will probably be called a paradox. there exists in such a case a certain institution or law; let us say, for the sake of simplicity, a fence or gate erected across a road. the more modern type of reformer goes gaily up to it and says, 'i don't see the use of this; let us clear it away.' to which the more intelligent type of reformer will do well to answer: 'if you don't see the use of it, i certainly won't let you clear it away. go away and think. then, when you can come back and tell me that you do see the use of it, i may allow you to destroy it.'" chesterton was a man who continually showed us the use of orthodoxy in christianity – most of all in his three great apologies: heretics, orthodoxy & the everlasting man. in heretics, he first points to the flaws in the beliefs of the moderns. in orthodoxy, he defends the values handed down through millennium of christian dogma. in the everlasting man, he tells the grand story of christianity itself and the often ignored miracle of its appearance in the life of man. – chesterton was a great debater, often trading blows with modern thinkers such as george bernard shaw, h.g. wells, bertrand russell and clarence darrow. he became known as the "prince of paradox," he was also a prolific writer, producing biographies on st. augustine and st. francis, and touched on many of the varieties of religion in his writings. he wrote fiction as well, authoring the famous father brown books and the man who was thursday. – chesterton was certainly not the imitation of christ in his personal life. a large man fond of food and drink, he was almost childlike in wonder of the magic of the world, while expressing the wit of an ancient. he gave no secret doctrine or systematic theology, but his "goodness" and basic "common sense" led many to the church. one commenter stated: first you read c.s. lewis, then chesterton, then you become catholic. despite his less than temperate life, he is now under investigation by the church for beatification: such was his impact.

Reviews:
The Baker Encyclopedia of Christian Apologetics is the most thorough Christian apologetics book I know of. Norman Geisler is a prominent Christian apologist who has been engaging in apologetics at all levels for many years. Of course, in a book of such an expanse I do have my disagreements; however, the benefits of this wonderful and thorough book far outweigh the minute disagreements. Geisler has taken the time to produce questions and answers from all ranges of the argument. He covers the philosophical and theological questions of the problem of evil, etc as well as the historical issues of dating the gospels and more. Any Christian apologists should get their hands on this great work!
Very thorough and scholarly.gr8god4u

7. Urban Apologetics: Why The Gospel Is Good News For The City [Book]

Product Details:
A unique and timely guide for relating the gospel to the complex and distinct issues of inner city america much of the new testament was written in urban settings, in which the christian communities had to deal head-on with issues such as race, equality, justice, sexuality, money, and economics. but much of today's apologetics (engagement with the questions that people are asking about christianity) come from suburban churches and academic studies. urban believers–those who live and minister in america's inner cities–often face unique issues, not often addressed by the larger christian community. these questions aren't neat or easy to answer but need to be addressed by applying biblical truth in the culture and challenges of urban life. author chris brooks has ministered for years in the urban environment as well as received extensive theological training. in urban apologetics, he seeks to connect the riches of the christian apologetic tradition with the issues facing cities–such as poverty, violence, and broken families. he brings an urban rhythm and sensitivity to the task of demonstrating the relevance of faith and the healing truth that christ provides.

8. Every Believer Confident: Apologetics For The Ordinary Christian [Book]

Product Details:
For the average christian who longs to share their faith effectively but doesn't know where to begin, every believer confident is the ultimate guidebook. all believers are called to make disciples and "give an answer" when objections are raised against the faith. most christians want to share and defend their beliefs, but they often feel ill-equipped. they desire to reach friends, family, coworkers, and classmates with the good news of jesus christ, but lack confidence and skill. they want to be like jesus and effectively engage the lost with the powerful truth of the gospel. they just don't know how. what's needed is a way to simplify apologetics and make it accessible to the average church member who will never study philosophy or science. if every church member was indeed a skilled evangelist, churches would not have to depend on come-and-see events to reach the community, because every member would be practicing the go-and-tell approach scripture assumes. every believer confident: apologetics for the ordinary christian simplifies the basic principles of apologetics and provides effective strategies for use in actual encounters with unbelievers. it provides a structure whereby any christian can engage anyone they meet, move the conversation to spiritual matters, answer objections raised against the christian faith, and present the gospel of christ in all its glory and rationality.

Reviews:
The print in my bible is very readable and notes are helpful. The articles make a person think. Outside margins are wide and easy to write in. I would encourage those who are interested in the study of apologetics to use books to study along with this bible. The information is good but I like to venture into a bible that has more specifics or depth. Before purchasing this bible, take a look at what else is out there. This bible is quite comfortable to handle and hold in your lap.appy611
This bible is a truly excellent resource for any mainstream Christian believer. It has numerous articles spread throughout that take on the tough questions about the faith, also it has a lot of pieces of information about scripture that many twist the meaning of to fit their own belief. So far I have only found one scripture where I thought something should have been mentioned about the meaning sometimes being twisted. I must say that this is not a general study bible, as it is geared so heavily toward understanding your beliefs.burdebca
The commentator has wavered on his personal beliefs and interpretation of young earth vs old earth throughout his lifetime, and that skepticism comes through in much of his notes (specifically on the first 11 chapters of Genesis.) Although I am a young earth creationist, I appreciate the commentator's approach to showing all sides of the discussion. If you are looking for a good apologetics Bible and something that will stimulate personal growth, though, and faith, this may be the book for you.cheermom18
17. Apologetics To The Glory Of God: An Introduction [Book]

Product Details:
"those who belive that presuppositionalism eliminates communication between believer and unbeliever underestimate god's power to reach the unbelieving heart. they also underestimate the variety and richness of a biblical apologetic, the creativity that god has given to us as his spokesmen, and the many forms that biblical apologetic can take. frame unveils some of the "variety and richness of a biblical apologetic." defining apologetics as "the discipline that teaches christians how to give a reason for their hope," he distinguishes three main kinds of apologetic: proof — presenting a rational basis for faith. defense — answering objections of unbelief. offense — exposing the foolishness of unbelieving thought. frame clarifies the relationships of reason, proofs, and evidences to faith, biblical authority, and the lordship of christ. he offers a fresh look at probability arguments and gives special attention to the problem of evil. particularly helpful are his extensive use of scripture and his presentation of specific lines of argument. a model dialogue in the concluding chapter shows how the various lines of argument work in a conversation with a nonbeliever. – back cover.
