1. Mere Christianity By C. S Lewis
Product Details:
In 1941 england, when all hope was threatened by the inhumanity of war, c. s. lewis was invited to give a series of radio lectures addressing the central issues of christianity. more than half a century later, these talks continue to retain their poignancy. first heard as informal radio broadcasts on the bbc, the lectures were published as three books and subsequently combined as "mere christianity." c. s. lewis proves that "at the center of each there is something, or a someone, who against all divergences of belief, all differences of temperament, all memories of mutual persecution, speaks with the same voice," rejecting the boundaries that divide christianity's many denominations. this twentieth century masterpiece provides an unequaled opportunity for believers and nonbelievers alike to hear a powerful, rational case for the christian faith. with a new foreword by lewis's stepson, douglas gresham, this illustrated gift edition evokes the historic time and place of the book's creation.
Reviews:
I love reading books cover to cover, so I always read the forward and intro’s. So worth it and helpful to understanding Lewis’ context and where the book is coming from. He’s been my favorite author since I was a kid yet I hadn’t gotten around to reading all of his titles. So this is helping me on my way. Format is lovely, the pages alternate in width in a nice pattern that’s comfortable for my fingers to skim through, the font size is easy to read and it reads like a bit of a conversation (which was the intent, being transcribed from a radio broadcast series).Cass M.
How many of us are prepared to answer the hard questions of life? So many times when people ask difficult questions about Christianity and the way Christians see the world we are not ready to give an answer This classic book by CS Lewis can help remedy that issue Although the book was written way back in the 1940's the contents are timeless After all the condition of man has changed little over the centuries We still wrestle with the same issues and questions that men have struggled with through the agesIs there a God? Why should we believe in Him? If he is so good why does he allow so much bad in our world? Is Jesus really the Son of God? Why did Jesus have to Die? All these hard questions are answered in Mere Christianity Not only are the answers there they are remarkably easy to understand given the weightiness of the topics These topics were originally a series of BBC discussions; later in life CS Lewis added to them and published them in book form However he attempted to keep the informal tone to his works to keep them as down to earth and understandable to as many people as possible It is my opinion that he succeeded This would be a great resource for older teens and young adults going away to college In the society in which we now live where the basic tenets of Christianity are under continual attack it is essential that young and old alike be well grounded in the faith Many times Christians may have great faith but lack the ability to explain it to others This book by CS Lewis will help with that While this paperback may be inexpensive the contents are quite valuable
Clive Lewis is an amazing layman Christian. If you are already a Christian you will find insight and understanding for living the life and walking the walk. If you are a seeker and not yet surrendered you will find encouragement for your journey. In this book he presents the argument for the golden rule of doing unto others as you would have them do unto you. It is not "In your face, repent or suffer." He presents the Christian walk with common sense and day to day living. I love this guy.navion01
2. The Universal Christ: How A Forgotten Reality Can Change Everything We See, Hope For, And Believe [Book]
Product Details:
New york times bestseller – with a new afterword – from one of the world’s most influential spiritual thinkers, a long-awaited book exploring what it means that jesus was called “christ,” and how this forgotten truth can restore hope and meaning to our lives.“ anyone who strives to put their faith into action will find encouragement and inspiration in the pages of this book.”—melinda gatesin his decades as a globally recognized teacher, richard rohr has helped millions realize what is at stake in matters of faith and spirituality. yet rohr has never written on the most perennially talked about topic in christianity: jesus. most know who jesus was, but who was christ? is the word simply jesus’s last name? too often, rohr writes, our understandings have been limited by culture, religious debate, and the human tendency to put ourselves at the center.drawing on scripture, history, and spiritual practice, rohr articulates a transformative view of jesus christ as a portrait of god’s constant, unfolding work in the world. “god loves things by becoming them,” he writes, and jesus’s life was meant to declare that humanity has never been separate from god—except by its own negative choice.
Reviews:
Again Rohr shakes God out of the box we try to put Him in! Hes so BIG! So grateful for this author who does his research into looking at how we came to make God squeeze into our preconceived ideas and traditional way of thing so much of which was birthed during the DARK AGES!! …as he brings out the treasures new that have lainthere all along. Why did Jesus come? Heres another look! Life changing!schl7421
I'd say "this book changed my life" but that would be slightly inaccurate. "This book confirmed the path I am already on, enlivened me, and encouraged me to keep going" is closer. Rohr's writing can be a bit dense, and it can take several readings of a given passage to feel like one has a grasp of the material. However, it's worth every second. Find a local group or at least an online group blog to discuss this book. Much more comes out in the discussing.sarbru_qd7acfpss
3. The Story Of Christianity [Book]
Product Details:
The story of christianity is an immeasurably fascinating one. a faith that began in roman occupied palestine, as a small and fugitive faction within judaism, grew, thrived and finally "conquered" the empire that had sought to exterminate it. then, over many centuries and in many lands, it became the vital source from which new civilizations sprang. at times, its geographical range expanded mightily, at others contracted perilously. at times, the church proved heroically true to its deepest moral principles; at others, inexcusably traitorous to them. but, by the beginning of the 21st century, this faith that began in such fragility, and that became so powerful–even though its temporal power has now receded in its historic homelands–is the most widespread and diverse of all religions. christianity is rapidly taking root in cultures very different from those in which it was born and in which it once flourished, and is assuming configurations that could not have been anticipated a century ago. in the story of christianity, the distinguished theologian david bentley hart provides a broad picture of christian history. presented in 50 short chapters–each focusing on a critical facet of christian history or theology, and each amplified by timelines, quotations, and color images–his magisterial account does full justice to the range of christian tradition, belief and practice–eastern orthodox, roman catholic, anglican, presbyterian, evangelical, coptic, chaldean, ethiopian orthodox, armenian orthodox, malankaran, to name but a few of the many possibilities. from the persecutions of the early church to the papal-imperial conflicts of the middle ages, from the religious wars of 16th and 17th-century europe to the challenges of science and secularism in the modern era, and from the ancient christian communities of africa and asia to the "house churches" of contemporary china, the story of christianity triumphantly captures the heterogeneous richness of christian history.

Reviews:
Even encyclopedias can have biases, but Hart does a good balanced job. He's an excellent scholar and author. Being Orthodox, he has an insider view, which is okay, and he treats Roman and Protestant issues with fairness. It's a good companion to Oxford's encyclopedia of Christianity.alrightgoodplan
I’m part way through a very enjoyable read of this book. A very helpful overview of the history of Christianity.James H.

4. 10 Questions Every Teen Should Ask (And Answer) About Christianity [Book]
Product Details:
Written by rebecca mclaughlin, author of confronting christianity in a world of increasing ideological diversity, kids are being challenged to think through their own beliefs at an early age. questions like how can you believe the bible is true? ; and isn't christianity against diversity? can seem like roadblocks for kids who are following jesus, as well as for those who might otherwise consider faith in christ. in this helpful book–written both for christian kids and for those who think jesus is just a fairy tale character–rebecca mclaughlin invites readers ages 12-15 to dig deep into hard questions for themselves and perhaps discover that the things that once looked like roadblocks to faith might actually be signposts.
Reviews:
There are questions being asked by teens even if the questions are not being put forth verbally. The questions are streaming through their minds and need to be answered with grace and truth. There are several implications for each chapter and the author devotes room to discuss each implication with clarity and understanding. This book can be used as a study for teenagers in small groups, large groups, and other teaching platforms. I would not be surprised to see the author develop a second edition of this book as culture begins to expand in issues that become pressing for the next generations. Thank you to Crossway. I received this ebook for the purpose of an unbiased review.Book Nerdy
I pray differently (and perhaps more ferociously) for my grandchildren than I ever did for my four sons, because it feels to me as if there is more at risk for those growing up in 2021. It does seem as if Rebecca McLaughlin's book for teens and young adults couldn't have come at a better time. 10 Questions Every Teen Should Ask (and Answer) about Christianity reframes the content of her excellent adult non-fiction Confronting Christianity. (Named Book of the Year 2020 by CT) She tackles the major questions confronting this generation, for myths and misconceptions about Christianity (and, therefore, reality itself!) abound in our world. Kids and teens have complex questions, and parents who feel ill-equipped to address them will find in McLaughlin's work a resoundingly confident voice who dares to be both clear and orthodox about Christianity's deepest beliefs. Organized around ten questions, the book provides a solid foundation for great conversations between parents and kids-particularly if they commit to reading the book together. What a relief to discover that it is not our calling as Christians to arrive at a perfectly curated set of pat answers, and, thereafter, never to ask again! We can't just assume that our teens and children (even the ones who have grown up in a pew!) are ready to engage in hard conversations or to respond to big questions on these topics. As parents, let's initiate a few dangerous conversations around the dining room table. Allowing our own minds to be challenged is the first step! Many thanks to Crossway for providing a copy of this book to facilitate my review, which is, of course, offered freely and with honesty.

7. Letter To The American Church [Book]
Product Details:
In an earnest and searing wake-up call, the author of the bestseller bonhoeffer: pastor, martyr, prophet, spy warns of the haunting similarities between today’s american church and the german church of the 1930s. echoing bonhoeffer’s prophetic call, eric metaxas exhorts his fellow christians to repent of their silence in the face of evil before it is too late.“ silence in the face of evil is itself evil. not to speak is to speak. not to act is to act. god will not hold us guiltless.” can it really be god’s will that his children be silent at a time like this? decrying the cowardice that masquerades as godly meekness, eric metaxas summons the church to battle. the author of a bestselling biography of dietrich bonhoeffer, metaxas reveals the haunting similarities between today’s american church and the german church of the 1930s. echoing the german martyr’s prophetic call, he exhorts his fellow christians to repent of their silence in the face of evil. an attenuated and unbiblical “faith” based on what bonhoeffer called “cheap grace” has sapped the spiritual vitality of millions of americans. paying lip service to an insipid “evangelism,” they shrink from combating the evils of our time. metaxas refutes the pernicious lie that fighting evil politicizes christianity. as bonhoeffer and other heroes of the faith insisted, the church has an irreplaceable role in the culture of a nation. it is our duty to fight the powers of darkness, especially on behalf of the weak and vulnerable. silence is not an option. god calls us to defend the unborn, to confront the lies of cultural marxism, and to battle the globalist tyranny that crushes human freedom. confident that this is his fight, the church must overcome fear and enter the fray, armed with the spiritual weapons of prayer, self-sacrifice, and love.
Reviews:
Letter to the American Church is a clarion call to all christians and fellow citizens. Share this book with friends and church members and discuss ways to put your faith in action. Christian and civic values are cannot be separated. We must engage and challenge the secular forces that threaten our republic.Lady Godiva
Eric Metaxas brings the voice of Bonhoeffer to not only the American Church, but also to many western nations facing increasing loss of freedoms, religious persecution, and dangerous trends similar to what Germany saw in the 1930's. In just the first chapter, Metaxas wastes no time in getting to the pith of the matter, with his characteristic wit, profundity, and clear writing. He compels his readers to examine the "hosts of reasons—and excuses" for the attitudes and behaviors of American Christian leaders today that mimic those of German pastors of the 1930's, and makes chilling comparisons between the two, invoking a sense of urgency and extending an invitation to action. In citing the words and works of William Wilberforce, Dietrich Bonhoeffer, as well as the Dutch theologian and statesman Abraham Kuyper, Metaxas issues a clarion call and prophetic warning to the American Church of the 21st century. With compelling (and telling) chapters such as "The Spiral of Silence," "the Church Paralyzed," and "Be Ye Not Political" (to mention a few), Letter to the American Church challenges the readers to learn from the past, and prepare for the future before it is too late. As Metaxas says, "… let's face it: what God usually asks of His people is that they actually live out their faith in all the spheres of their lives so that all of society is blessed. And when they fail to do this, they are failing to be the Church." Just read the book. It's essential for pastors and leaders, but also for any Christian who wants to be like the "Sons of Issachar – men who know how to interpret the signs of the times to determine what Israel should do." I Chronicles 12:23 (TLV). This book is a both a wake-up call and call to action for 21st century "Sons and Daughters of Issachar" who need the wisdom of Bonhoeffer's warnings made alive today that we might discern the signs of the times and not just "stay above the fray," but lead the charge into it.Babsruth

9. The Triumph Of Christianity: How The Jesus Movement Became The World's Largest Religion [Book]
Product Details:
More than 40 percent of the people on earth today are christians, and their number is growing more rapidly than that of any other major faith. in the triumph of christianity, acclaimed religious and social historian rodney stark explains how an obscure jewish sect became the largest, most thriving religion in the world. in stark's groundbreaking book the rise of christianity, he examined the early success of christianity and how it conquered rome. now, in this much-anticipated volume, stark tells a far more extensive story, beginning with the religious and social situation prior to the birth of jesus and continuing to the present. as it moves through six historical eras, the triumph of christianity gets right to christianity's most pivotal and controversial moments—often turning them on their heads: christmas eve surveys the religious situation within which christianity began. christianizing the empire looks at jesus's life and the formative days of the movement he inspired, explaining why christianity was a reprieve from the miseries of daily life for so many. consolidating christian europe argues that constantine's conversion did the church a great deal of harm, examines the gradual demise of paganism, and clarifies the motives behind the crusades. medieval currents sheds new light on the misleadingly named "dark ages" and the essential role that faith played in the scientific revolution. christianity divided examines two roman catholic "churches"—the church of piety and the church of power—as they respond to the challenges of heresy, luther's reformation, and the spanish inquisition. new worlds and christian growth considers the development of religious pluralism in the united states and the continuing vigor of christianity worldwide, disproving the popular notion that religion must disappear to make room for modernity. with his signature knack for making the boldest and most original scholarship accessible to all readers, stark presents the real story behind the tragedies and triumphs that have shaped the trajectory of the christian faith and, indeed, much of global history.

Product Details:
The writings in this volume cast a glimmer of light upon the emerging traditions and organization of the infant church, during an otherwise little-known period of its development. a selection of letters and small-scale theological treatises from a group known as the apostolic fathers, several of whom were probably disciples of the apostles, they provide a first-hand account of the early church and outline a form of early christianity still drawing on the theology and traditions of its parent religion, judaism. included here are the first epistle of bishop clement of rome, an impassioned plea for harmony; the epistle of polycarp; the epistle of barnabas; the didache; and the seven epistles written by ignatius of antioch—among them his moving appeal to the romans that they grant him a martyr's death.for more than seventy years, penguin has been the leading publisher of classic literature in the english-speaking world. with more than 1,700 titles, penguin classics represents a global bookshelf of the best works throughout history and across genres and disciplines. readers trust the series to provide authoritative texts enhanced by introductions and notes by distinguished scholars and contemporary authors, as well as up-to-date translations by award-winning translators.

When Jesus died, a new religion was born. judism first split between those who thought that the messiah had come, and those who were still looking. Paul realized that old style theocratic judism was not going to work for the nonjews in greece and turkey, so a new sect was called Christians by the Romans – non jews who followed the teaching of paul and christ, not the old ways of jews. was christ god? man? both? new christians had to figure this out. these translated letters from second century bishops give clues to how this happened.joelp3

Reviews:
This book is a special research project by the now current director of the Barna Research Group. Its a porject to see what the outside world, those who do not claim a Christian faith, think and actually believe about Christianity. It is a blunt book with a mixture of comment and statistics but with some valid challenges to Christians on how they look to the world. It is based on research in the U.S. but is a very solid book and well worth a read. A little expensive here…
This book was required reading for a course. For people in Christian ministry, it was all common sense as to the perceptions of Christianity by the "outsiders." The suggested solutions, however, were simplistic and would simply be treating the symptoms as it were. The root of the rejection of Christianity lies within our culture's drift toward taking the "easy road" in life. We have generation after generation growing up with a sense of entitlement and instant gratification, each worse than the last. Christianity calls for service, denial of desires, and a disciplined life which conflicts with what the outsiders want. This is not likely to change.medman32423
This book is written from a Christian viewpoint based on studies and research done by the author -concerning the reasons for the increasing negativity towards Christians. This negativity is based on the actions of Christians themselves , due to perceived judgmental behaviors and actual actions or non actions ,taken by Christians concerning non Christians- or the unsaved , unchurched . The book lists the three main detriments of acting Christians as viewed by non Christians and the reasons for this animosity by such. The author fills a void in this area and the book comes off as a sociological study with a Christian bent , however the author is seeking an actual awareness of the issues involved and is one of the few to hit the issues head on , and actually admitting to the mainstream market that Christians, themselves- have a lot to do with this negative attitude . Mostly due to their own actions and reactions towards others. This book has gone to the main stream readers rather then being kept behind the closed doors of the non secular market . It is a unique approach to a growing issue and should be read by all with a bewilderment in the practices of exclusionary Christians .ravens_collections

My church almost forked over $5000 for Warren's program. We were told to read his books and follow them. I found he keeps encouraging "change" and uses evangelical language but in reality prefers to ignore the scripture in favor of psychology. You won't hear about sin either. What he does do, is subtly shift the center from God to "you". He uses entertainment to draw the uncommitted into the church, thus diluting the others. His program fills churches, but, according to Bill Hybels (who should know), produces no disciples. By the way, Warren's book took off after being backed by Rupert Murdoch's (non-Christian) money, Warren is a member of the council of foreign relations, and he has no testimony. That's right – if you hear his story you won't find sin, repentance, or calvary referenced. It is said that to wreck a ship you only need to take it one degree off course and eventually it will strike a reef! Avoid his teachings – they have filled the churches.2003_ub313
