2. Joy Of Cooking: 2019 Edition Fully Revised And Updated [Book]

Product Details:
“generation after generation, joy has been a warm, encouraging presence in american kitchens, teaching us to cook with grace and humor. this luminous new edition continues on that important tradition while seamlessly weaving in modern touches, making it all the more indispensable for generations to come.” —samin nosrat, author of salt, fat, acid, heat “cooking shouldn’t just be about making a delicious dish—owning the process and enjoying the experience ought to be just as important as the meal itself. the new joy of cooking is a reminder that nothing can compare to gathering around the table for a home cooked meal with the people who matter most.” —joanna gaines, author of magnolia table in the nearly ninety years since irma s. rombauer self-published the first three thousand copies of joy of cooking in 1931, it has become the kitchen bible, with more than 20 million copies in print. this new edition of joy has been thoroughly revised and expanded by irma’s great-grandson john becker and his wife, megan scott.john and megan developed more than six hundred new recipes for this edition, tested and tweaked thousands of classic recipes, and updated every section of every chapter to reflect the latest ingredients and techniques available to today’s home cooks. their strategy for revising this edition was the same one irma and marion employed: vet, research, and improve joy’s coverage of legacy recipes while introducing new dishes, modern cooking techniques, and comprehensive information on ingredients now available at farmers’ markets and grocery stores. you will find tried-and-true favorites like banana bread cockaigne, chocolate chip cookies, and southern corn bread—all retested and faithfully improved—as well as new favorites like chana masala, beef rendang, megan’s seeded olive oil granola, and smoked pork shoulder. in addition to a thoroughly modernized vegetable chapter, there are many more vegan and vegetarian recipes, including caramelized tamarind tempeh, crispy pan-fried tofu, spicy chickpea soup, and roasted mushroom burgers. joy’s baking chapters now include gram weights for accuracy, along with a refreshed lineup of baked goods like cannelés de bordeaux, rustic no-knead sourdough, ciabatta, chocolate-walnut babka, and chicago-style deep-dish pizza, as well as gluten-free recipes for pizza dough and yeast breads. a new chapter on streamlined cooking explains how to economize time, money, and ingredients and avoid waste. you will learn how to use a diverse array of ingredients, from amaranth to za’atar. new techniques include low-temperature and sous vide cooking, fermentation, and cooking with both traditional and electric pressure cookers. barbecuing, smoking, and other outdoor cooking methods are covered in even greater detail. this new edition of joy is the perfect combination of classic recipes, new dishes, and indispensable reference information for today’s home cooks. whether it is the only cookbook on your shelf or one of many, joy is and has been the essential and trusted guide for home cooks for almost a century. this new edition continues that legacy.
Reviews:
This book not only has recipes but it has concise directions for newer cooks. I have one from at least 35 years ago. About 25 page were missing from the salad chapter when it was brand new. I never got another one. Recently my daughter asked me to bring "Sunshine Salad" that was popular when she was in school. I knew what was in it, but not quantities, so I got out my Joy o Cooking and it was in the missing section. I went hunting for the same book from that time period. I ending up buying three and not one of them was missing that section. I did not find the recipe in any of them. So I guessed and did pretty well, it was very good.gmamk
There is a reason this cookbook has been in print since the 1930's. It is probably the single most useful thing a chief could buy. There was worry after the editions in the 90's and early 2000's that Joy had lost its spark. The soul had been taken from it. But this new edition has brought it back to its former glory. This book explains every question relating to cooking you could have. It goes over how to cook and prepare ingredients in a friendly voice that gives you confidence in an extensive section called "Know Your Ingredients". This book contains a literally treasure trove of American cooking and baking. Everyone should own a copy.Nick
My friend is a really gourmet cook who routinely uses ingredients I have never purchased and am not even sometimes familiar with. She said this book was her first and most important resource, so even though I already have far more cookbooks than can ever fit in my kitchen even if I removed all the pots and pans, I simply had to order this one, too. I am glad I did. It is well written, has extensive information about the product such as diagrams showing the cuts of meat and then recipes that give appropriate preparation methods and so on. I like the way the index is organized, and will never again purchase a lovely country church regional cookbook because the indexes are unuseable, with computerized entries just as they were turned in, instead of being categorized for usefulness (i.e., 'apple pie' recipes located in various places, such as under the 'S's', for 'Susan's Apple Pie', or under the C's for 'Caramel Apple Pie, etc.) Joy of Cooking index is not like that at all, but is a kind of 'double entry' system, with listings under 'beef' and then also under 'meats' (or poultry, or fish). The 'test' recipes I checked out for German food are almost exactly the way my family made it in Wisconsin–the Pfeffernusse cookie and Sauerbraten recipies look really authentic to me, and based on that, I will assume that all the others are equally well researched. I think this would be the one book to have before any others.belle_arte

Straightforward, easy recipes. Delicious food. Molly Baz has really hit it out of the park with this one. Buy it for your mother, father, brother, sister, friend – you won't regret it and neither will your stomach.Elena the chef
As a fan of Molly Baz before the BA fiasco, I was so delighted when I learned she was writing a cookbook and even more upon receiving it! The book is full of funky, kitschy recipes and Molly Bazisms while still being informative and teaching basic kitchen skills. The recipes are everything but basic, though, so if you're looking for non-experimental recipes, I suggest you look elsewhere! Also, shout out to Molly for incorporating QR codes, organizing the ingredient list by grocery area, and!!!! referring to the ingredient amount in the instructions! it helps my adhd self soooo much. And the playful colors and type font? the food photography? *chef's kiss*SHAKRISTAL

Reviews:
This was a great price for both volumes together. In this package volume one is the anniversary edition with a great forward written by Julia Child with personal commentary, history, past reviews and so much more.Thirsty
What can I say? It was written by Julia Child after all! My daughter, who previously had NO desire to cook, got married two years ago and has started cooking up a storm. She started cooking some impressive recipes and mentioned how much she respected Julia Child. I bought this for her as a birthday gift and she was SO excited! These cookbooks are so much more than just recipes. They have some of the best tips in the industry and she has already benefited from this gift. I highly recommend these books to anyone who wants to branch out from their mom's Betty Crocker cookbook (no disrespect intended because I love my BC!)Tee
Julia Child is a master at education. Her cross referencing in the book is precise, the recipes are well set out and she gives you encouragement through her descriptions. It is a book that was thoroughly researched and written by people whose passion for food and cooking is contagious. I adore the pragmatic approach taken, but also respect the in depth research that these women performed all those years ago.SK

I absolutely love this book. I wish I had had it when I first got married and didn't know how to do anything. I am a visual learner so the pictures of the step by step process are great for me. It is a very beautiful, very helpful book.rwill2730
I've been cooking for a long time and this book is simply one of the best introductions to the culinary arts, and it should be one of the first additions to any serious cook's culinary library. No matter how long you've been cooking or where you cook at (home, on the corner, a short order cook at a greasy spoon or even as a professional cook at a restaurant) this is pretty much the foundation of technique, and you'll be able to correctly prepare and cook meals very quickly if you invest a little time and reflection on the contents of this book. The book itself is packed with great illustrations and recipes, and it also shows you very clearly what works what as far as basic ingredients goes. For the basics this is a definite MUST HAVE!vg-999

Reviews:
I’m obsessed with fixer upper and both chip and Joanna lol. This cookbook is great! I’ve made a few recipes In it multiple times, tweaking wherever I want (if wanted based on personal taste but it’s definitely not needed). I personally think the recipes in this book are better than the second, newer one. I also like the little stories behind the recipes that Joanna adds in the book.Lance108
Good morning, This gift was for our Mom for Mother's Day. Unfortunately, there was no place to add a gift card on the site or to indicate to please not ship the items separately. We ordered biscuits, a cookbook, and a candle. The biscuits came in a broken box that when our parents picked it up, the biscuits fell out and rolled all over the floor. (Side note: I am told they were still delicious!) The cookbook and candle did not ship until nearly two weeks later – they were received the Monday after Mother's Day. It would have been quicker for me to have purchased them and mail them myself. This aside, my sister and I are fans of Magnolia and anticipate purchasing for ourselves in the future, but not again for sending gifts. Thank you, Beth HazeltonBeth H.
This gorgeous cookbook was given to me, just a few days ago, by a very dear and close friend. As well as having a love for cooking, I take great pleasure in reading good and informative cookbooks and this one is a treasure. It is like reading a favorite book. How wonderful to have this now, while our world is in the chaos of this pandemic. Decades ago, I worked for a very well known "food" company as their Creative Home Economist. I was the one who designed and produced most all of the food photography, working with a very talented photographer. What wonderful memories this exquisite photography brings back to me. My question about the Chili recipe on page 256. Is it possible that some ingredients were mistakenly omitted from this recipe? Since it is Chili – there is no chili powder, no cumin or any other seasoning, except salt and pepper. This recipe is very close to the way I prepare chili, but I add chili powder and cumin. Thank you so much for the tremendous amount of work to produce this gem.!Jane S.

Reviews:
I truly liked the cook book. I had already read a couple of Dans other books. So I wasn't surprised with some of thr recipes. You need to be open minded and understand that because these people are so healthy is because of their eating habits. Some items might be hard to find but use your imagination and substitute. It depends on how much you want to be healthy and willing to change your eating. We're pretty spoiled here. Dont even buy the wrong foods and just get use to eating the good ones. Once you try different recipes for awhile they get easier and faster to make. LearningJACKIE
Very Beautiful book with very useful recipes that you can make at your home. Not too complicated to find the ingredients because they tell you what you can substitute. You won't regret having the book. It is very interesting and encourages good eating habits that may surprise you! (Beans, greens and sardines… well a little fish.) Nice gift too! My mom really enjoys her book too! She made the cornbread with real corn in it already!cooltabcat
This is an amazing cookbook. So much good information regarding veges and their health benefits. Recipes seem pretty easy, however living in a small town (with limited grocery stores) some of the ingredients are unavailable. But overall very satisfied and ready to try some of the recipes.southernbamachic

Very pleased with the purchase. Very well packaged and in better condition than I expected. This is a must have book for anyone who cooks!jerab11
Walmart packing was poor at best with some damage. End flap was open, cheap amateurish cardboard attempt. Book itself is even more bland than described by others, even illustrations are few and far between and no photographs. Will keep the book but should have purchased from Amazon.Darryl
I honestly have no idea why I ordered the Cook's Illustrated Cookbook all of those years ago but I'm very glad that I did! It is like a one-stop collection of like every kind of thing you'd want to make: breakfasts, appetizers, pasta dishes, various types of meat, beans, vegetables, soups/stews, desserts, etc. It is legit a little (or a lot) of everything. Cook's Illustrated is well known for working out recipes that just WORK and they explain in detail why they say you have to do what you do. You don't have to read their scientific explanation about why a recipe is written the way that it is if you don't want to. You will be happy with the results you get anyway. I've been asked several times which of my cookbooks I'd take with me if this place was on fire. If I had the luxury of selecting a handful of them I don't think I'd grab this one. If I could only take one with me, though, it would most likely be this Cook's Illustrated Cookbook.njreviewer.n

Haven’t tried any recipes yet, but lovely book. Lots of photos and variety of recipes. Very happy with ut and look forward to giving some recipes a try.robert
Let me just start off with WOW! The tomato soup is to die for and that's only the first recipe. I actually had to stop reading and make it. The more pages I turned the closer I got to my own kitchen. I truly wanted to start cooking right away! I adore Stanley Tucci and while reading this book I felt as if he and Felicity were standing next to me telling me these stories as we cooked together. Though it was a little hard imagining her as I've never heard her voice before but it was amazing all the same. I haven't enjoyed reading a cookbook like this in such a long time. Thank you Stanley and Felicity. I would highly recommend this cookbook to everyone! Received a copy in exchange for an honest review.
Great price for book. Turn around time wasn't perfect, but worth the price I paid for the book.Barbara

Reviews:
My boyfriend got the recipe book and started making meals for us without telling me where they came from or that they were vegan. I loved everything he made and decided to purchase this for a friend who is vegan! I m not vegan but I ve been trying to incorporate plant based meals into my diet. This book makes it so easy!! The recipes are delicious. I have a big sweet tooth and all these healthy recipes are absolutely wonderful without the added sugar ! Just all natural goodness. Love it !Wylie F.
It's worth it just for the incredible nutty parm (a vegan alternative to parmesan cheese that is even better than the "real thing" in my opinion, and I was dubious since I dislike the main ingredient, nutritional yeast). The other recipes have been over seasoned so far, but that's easy enough to fix by simply cutting back to let the natural food flavors be better balanced. The recipes have nice variety in required effort, and they are very consistent with a heart-healthy diet without being preachy or pseudo-scientific. It's all backed by good science (and good taste)!fan_0f_0dditiesanddistinction
This is the cookbook that compliments Dr Greger's How Not to Die bestseller, espousing the value of evidence-based nutrition. This is not a book of weight-loss recipes, or particularly simple recipes (which is why I wanted the lay flat format). It is nutritious whole plant based eating. You'll need a well-stocked spice shelf, some herbs, lots of greens, beans, whole grains and other vegetables. Enjoy your health!John C.
