Reviews:
as a state expert in behavior and behavioral change, 20 professional presentations, six years teaching psych, twenty years of helping folks overcome addiction and trauma, I know a little bit about this topic. I do agree with the authors that a weekend experiential seminar is not worth much, however, their very independent or anti-dependent, focus on 'autonomy' is similar to the eighties and the kind of new aged woo woo that is preached in those types of seminars. the book is boring, the typical self help story-line, an imaginary teacher and student. humans are a combination of nature, nurture, and self choice, to state that trauma has no impact is dangerous, read up on the ACE study to learn more. Our genes play a large role in personality, like my mom said, all three boys (sons of hers), came out different, one now has a ph.d. in math, one a masters in education and a bachelors in biology, and of course me, masters in counseling/psychology. Can obstacles be overcome, of course they can, we can change, about a third of who we are, but//and our general nature of who we are, will also remain the same. self help books like this are worthless, try a group experience, Alanon, AA, NAMI, on a regular, at least weekly basis, others, anything from ballroom dance to yoga to karate, and therapy, and guaranteed, in about a years you will see some impactful change. don't buy into the simplistic, dichotomous, viewpoint of a book like this one.lewigalwa-0
Easy to read self-help book. I'm halfway through and I like that the book keeps its focus on a central principle – the Adlerian psychology. I've read and liked so much the 7 Habits of Highly Effective People which according to the this book is also following principles from Alfred Adler. Knowing this made me more interested in this book and curious as to how the youth will transform his views towards the end. I highly recommend this book to anyone wanting to know more about life and wanting to learn how to live simply and happily.marap-ric
Good book but not sure I've changed how "pleasing" I tend to be. Guess I lack courage! The humble will inherit the earth … if it's alright with everyone else.Mr. Despicable

I am well aware of the criticism that has hovered over Ambrose's work, but I still love to read him, and Undaunted Courage is one of my favorites. I also own a standard hardback, which is my reading copy, and am thrilled to have this signed Easton Press edition. What I like the most about the book is that it succeeded in transporting me in my mind to the actual adventure. I am still amazed that Lewis and Clark made it there and back alive. I am about to start reading it again once I get my reading copy back from the last person I loaned it to.theoldbookman58
I had read the journals of Lewis & Clark, I found them difficult at best to read. A friend told me about Undaunted Courage an I purchased it on ebay. The book by Stephen E. Ambrose actually detailed much of the trip in better terms than the L&C journals. I would certainly encourage reading this historical documentation of one of the most important eras of our history. The price on ebay was much better than anywhere else that I looked in trying to find the book. I encourage everyone to consider using and utilize ebay when possible on any of their purchases. Thank you.drawoh2754
Had an old paperback but this was worthy of owning this book in hardback. Has to be one of the best books I have ever read, and I have read many. Includes information on what went into the expedition, the many obstacles and interactions with the many Indian tribes along their amazing journey.harr1937

Reviews:
** “When I say God is in control, I’m not saying he punches buttons and I go a certain way. I’m saying he has a plan, and no matter what happens, he can work out all my choices for my good. I believe and I trust.” ** Janice Cantore again delivers a great suspense thriller — one ripped from today’s headlines — with her latest novel “Code of Courage.” When rioting in Los Angeles after a police-involved shooting rolls over to neighboring La Rosa, Detective Danni Grace finds herself right in the middle of the violent acts. After suffering an injury, she questions her future on the police force until a friend is also blamed in another shooting. As the anti-police sentiment continues to grow, Danni must determine whom she can trust, including her former husband Gabe Fox who now works as an investigator for the city prosecutor. Together they must also figure out if a cold case Gabe is working on has anything to do with today’s protests. What follows is a powerful — yet relative to today — plot, filled with intensity and thrills. Cantore always does an incredible job creating a story that’s both intriguing and suspenseful. Her past as a former police officer always deeply adds to her storylines. “Code of Courage” also contains several great themes, like showing loving-kindness and being a peacemaker; the power of prayer; God is not the author of confusion, and can fix any situation (“Problems of life. You might not be able to fix any of it, but God can fix all of it”); ugliness will always be a part of a broken world; God doesn’t abandon His children; and everything happens for a reason. Fans of authors like Robert Whitlow, Cara Putman and Colleen Coble will love “Code of Courage.” Five stars out of five. Tyndale House Publishers provided this complimentary copy through NetGalley for my honest, unbiased review.Semmie
3.5 stars "Lady Justice is blindfolded for a reason. Justice is for everyone or it's for no one. As soon as we start deciding who deserves what and why, we've stepped out of uniform and crossed a line." Confused and discouraged, Danni Grace is ready to give up the profession that she once thought was her calling. Injured during a protest turned violent, Danni steps away in order to evaluate a lot of things; not only her job as a detective, but a another decision that she now regrets; breaking ties with her husband. Why, after two years of separation, had he shown up at the hospital to check on her? As an investigator for La Rosa's city prosecutor's office, Gabriel Fox becomes involved in the incidents that surround his ex-wife's injury. When matters escalate once again following an officer involved shooting, Gabriel's defense of the officer lands him back at a desk job pushing papers . . . on cold case files, one of which snags his undivided attention. What were the chances . . . . ? And what were the chances that his re-entry into Danni's life is for a reason that even his non-religious mind cannot ignore? Written with a polished inside perspective on the role of local police officers within a community, this story is both enlightening and sobering as it dissects what can happen, and sadly is happening, when boundaries are removed and citizens, as well as those sworn to protect them, are left defenseless. On a deeper level though, it's a really sweet look at the path of reconciliation between two people who were never meant to be alone. Plus . . . . it's a great crime story; I certainly couldn't fit all the pieces back together. Can you? "You might be surprised at how easy your other decisions are once your relationship with God is straightened out."RManey
'Why should she continue to put her life on the line for such an ungrateful public?' I have enjoyed every book by Janice Cantore I've read. She knows her stuff. As a retired police officer, she writes very convincingly of police and crime matters. This time around, she deals with a city that has leadership that decides the police are no longer necessary. Rioting and property damage are the normal happenings and the police are suspended or relieved of their duties when trying to solve crimes. Police officer Danni Grace and investigator Gabriel Fox, once man and wife, are trying to do their jobs in spite of this upheaval in the community and the subsequent directives from the mayor and city prosecutor's office for the police to virtually stand down. These folks think citizens should just watch out for crime and most of these citizens are rioters and protestors. It was a bit scary reading of what was happening here in this city. Then a cold case comes to light that has Gabe wondering if this could be related. He and Danni didn't make a go of their marriage, but both are now having second thoughts. She has always depended on her faith and he has never depended on faith. But things are ramping up and about to change for both of them. I'll be honest: I didn't know how Cantore was going to bring this book to a satisfying conclusion given her subject matter. I was captivated throughout the reading and eager to see the ending, just to see how this would all play out. But Cantore did a masterful job! She continued to layer the story nearly each chapter and I was completely hooked. This was a totally satisfying read. Well done! My thanks to Tyndale House for a copy of this book via the Net Galley platform. The opinion in this review is expressly my own.SusanSnodgrass

7. Braving The Wilderness: The Quest For True Belonging And The Courage To Stand Alone [Book]

Product Details:
Social scientist brené brown, phd, msw, has sparked a global conversation about the experiences that bring meaning to our lives—experiences of courage, vulnerability, love, belonging, shame, and empathy. in braving the wilderness, brown redefines what it means to truly belong in an age of increased polarization. with her trademark mix of research, storytelling, and honesty, brown will again change the cultural conversation while mapping a clear path to true belonging. but in a culture that’s rife with perfectionism and pleasing, and with the erosion of civility, it’s easy to stay quiet, hide in our ideological bunkers, or fit in rather than show up as our true selves and brave the wilderness of uncertainty and criticism. and that path cuts right through the wilderness. brown writes, “the wilderness is an untamed, unpredictable place of solitude and searching. it is a place as dangerous as it is breathtaking, a place as sought after as it is feared. but it turns out to be the place of true belonging, and it’s the bravest and most sacred place you will ever stand.”

Product Details:
The pulitzer prize-winning classic of political integrity with a foreword by robert f. kennedy's enduring classic resounds with timeless lessons on the most cherished of virtues–courage and patriotism–and remains a moving, powerful, and relevant testament to the indomitable american spirit during 1954-55, kennedy, then a junior senator from the state of massachusetts, profiled eight american patriots, mainly united states senators, who at crucial moments in our nation's history, revealed a special sort of greatness: men who disregarded dreadful consequences to their public and private lives to do that one thing which seemed right in itself. they were men of various political and regional allegiances–their one overriding loyalty was to the united states. kennedy writes in the foreword, profiles in courage "is not just stories of the past but a book of hope and confidence for the future. this special "p.s." edition of the book commemorates the fiftieth anniversary of the book's publication. it includes vintage photographs and an extensive author biography, and features kennedy's correspondence about the writing project, contemporary reviews of the book, a letter from ernest hemingway, and two rousing speeches from recipients of the profile in courage award.
Reviews:
I wasnt sure what to expect or precisely what this would be about. It has been exceptionally intellectually stimulating and well worth my time. Im very pleased that I decided to read this. It substantiates through his remarkable authorship the great intellect of one of our greatest Presidents and furthermore is an enlightening historical perspective about many other noteworthy people.voyageup
Profiles in Courage an outstanding Pulitzer Prize winner is an in-depth biography of the courageous and honest actions taken by eight U.S. Senators throughout different periods during American history. John F. Kennedy brought glory to eight unsung heroes that chose integrity over popularity and suffered severe consequences for their actions. The book is written in chronological order beginning with the breakaway of John Adams from the Federalist Party in 1808 ending with Robert Taft's definite criticism of the Nuremberg Trials. Kennedy evenly develops the struggle of each senator and explains the bravery that was required of each man to take the action to be out of many the one who stood for justice. Much like Collier's Decision in Philadelphia Kennedy's historical book is an accurate depiction of American Heroes.bigvic1993
I didn't like the content of the book. I thought was about the accident Kennedy has during war but it talks about some senators.luzus00
