2. A Catholic Pilgrimage Through American History: People And Places That Shaped The Church In The United States [Book]

Product Details:
Historian kevin schmiesing takes you to more than two-dozen sites and events that symbolize and embody america's rich and sometimes tumultuous catholic past, including the santa fe trail, gettysburg, and the bourbon trail. you'll also meet both famous and infamous catholics–including augustus tolton, dr. samuel mudd, and frances cabrini–who impacted our nation's history.the idea for a catholic pilgrimage through american history came from schmiesing's mother, he says. she turned every childhood vacation into a pilgrimage, purposely inserting religious sites into the family's journey to places such as niagara falls, washington, dc, or myrtle beach.catholics have been part of the american experiment since the beginning–in founding the colonies and expanding the west, building education and health care systems, abolishing slavery, fighting on the front lines, and advancing science, technology, and space exploration. each of the twenty-seven sites on schmiesing's virtual itinerary–including, the washington monument, wounded knee creek, the university of notre dame, and mission san diego de alcalá–transports you to a significant time in us history and connects the dots to our catholic heritage. you will meet notable catholics such as john f. kennedy, black elk, and katharine drexel, and learn more about their contributions to history.you will explore the various and sometimes conflicting roles catholics have played in key periods and events through the stories of shrines, memorials, and other historic places including: the catholic plymouth rock–st. mary's city, maryland;the bourbon trail–church of st. thomas, bardstown, kentucky;the pope's stone–the washington monument in the district of columbia;a catholic mission and a native american tragedy: wounded knee creek, south dakota; andthe home of the first black priest–the churches of quincy, illinois.

Reviews:
An informative and enjoyable read of people and places where the catholic church made her mark throughout American history. Some places are well known while others aren't. There are moments of triumph and challenge. It's important to understand the historical context of when Catholic lay people and religious lived and not judge them by our modern day views/mindset. The chapters about Maryland and DC were of personal interest since I live in the region. Great reading!ELISA B.
Schmiesing weaves many distinct threads into the tapestry in such a way that no thread is lost; each thread remains distinctly captivating, yet contributes to the whole. The many stories tied to each chapter are briefly accounted, yet still moving, edifying and enlightening in themselves. The author combines a very objective presentation with great storytelling. Readers of all ages will appreciate the beautiful and intriguing narrative; it was accessible and enjoyable for my 10 year old as well as adults in my family. One chapter we read aloud together, as we scheduled a brief stop at the relevant historical site into a family vacation. It was very moving.LennaS
3. The Triumph Of Christianity: How The Jesus Movement Became The World's Largest Religion [Book]

Product Details:
More than 40 percent of the people on earth today are christians, and their number is growing more rapidly than that of any other major faith. in the triumph of christianity, acclaimed religious and social historian rodney stark explains how an obscure jewish sect became the largest, most thriving religion in the world. in stark's groundbreaking book the rise of christianity, he examined the early success of christianity and how it conquered rome. now, in this much-anticipated volume, stark tells a far more extensive story, beginning with the religious and social situation prior to the birth of jesus and continuing to the present. as it moves through six historical eras, the triumph of christianity gets right to christianity's most pivotal and controversial moments—often turning them on their heads: christmas eve surveys the religious situation within which christianity began. christianizing the empire looks at jesus's life and the formative days of the movement he inspired, explaining why christianity was a reprieve from the miseries of daily life for so many. consolidating christian europe argues that constantine's conversion did the church a great deal of harm, examines the gradual demise of paganism, and clarifies the motives behind the crusades. medieval currents sheds new light on the misleadingly named "dark ages" and the essential role that faith played in the scientific revolution. christianity divided examines two roman catholic "churches"—the church of piety and the church of power—as they respond to the challenges of heresy, luther's reformation, and the spanish inquisition. new worlds and christian growth considers the development of religious pluralism in the united states and the continuing vigor of christianity worldwide, disproving the popular notion that religion must disappear to make room for modernity. with his signature knack for making the boldest and most original scholarship accessible to all readers, stark presents the real story behind the tragedies and triumphs that have shaped the trajectory of the christian faith and, indeed, much of global history.

6. Reactivity: How The Gospel Transforms Our Actions And Reactions [Book]

Product Details:
Bestselling author paul david tripp helps christians communicate biblically in a culture of outrage digital media and technology are altering the way people act–and react–toward each other. criticism, outrage, and controversy dominate social engagement and unfortunately many christians have joined in the chaos. it's a troubling contrast to jesus's words in john 13:35: "by this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another." award-winning author paul david tripp instructs believers to view digital media and technology through the lens of the gospel and points them toward a biblical framework for communication. explaining how god wants the church to engage with culture and each other, tripp encourages christians to think wisely about their interactions and be a beacon of light in an age of toxicity. a biblical look at social engagement: discusses wholesome talk, the effects of "cancel culture," and 5 false identity temptations including attention, power, and acceptance applies scripture practically: gives a gospel-centered framework for navigating digital life without confusion or destructive reactivity great for pastors, parents, and youth ministries: helps readers understand who they are in christ so they won't be swayed by a chaotic digital culture
Reviews:
Something has gone wrong with how many Christians react on social media. It has developed into a toxic culture. Tripp initially saw social media as a powerful tool for the gospel. It has developed to a cesspool of anger filled with comments dishonoring God. And, unfortunately, it is becoming normalized, even infecting the church. Tripp is hard hitting in this book. He reminds Christians God has made it clear. The norm for Christians should be love. "Being theologically correct does not give you the license to be mean." (170/1709) He reviews the biblical commands covering our responses and other relationship interactions. Yes, we are to care about truth and justice but there is a godly way to express such concern. I really like Tripp's underlying foundation for our way of understanding and dealing with everything, especially the culture of social media. We are to view everything through the lens of the gospel. The gospel provides us with a way of seeing, a means of interpreting, a guide to understanding, and a way of living. The gospel should shape what we say and how we say it. This is an excellent book for Christians who are concerned about the toxic nature of recent social media conversations. It is also a necessary book for those involved in the heated social media exchanges. Tripp reminds us it has to do with the conditions of the heart and the sin involved. The gospel should be our driving motivation for all we do. Love and showing dignity and respect are to be essential elements of our exchanges. If you are willing to evaluate what you think and say and do through the lens of the gospel, this book is for you. If you are not willing to make that examination, this book is all the more necessary for you. I received a complimentary egalley of this book from the publisher. My comments are an independent and honest review.bookwomanjoan
7. Dominion: How The Christian Revolution Remade The World [Book]

Product Details:
From the crucifixion of jesus to the birth of modern morals, this "marvelous" account from an award-winning historian shows how the christian revolution forged the western imagination (the economist). crucifixion, the romans believed, was the worst fate imaginable. it was this that rendered it so suitable a punishment for slaves. how astonishing it was, then, that people should have come to believe that one particular victim of crucifixion-an obscure provincial by the name of jesus-had been a god. dominion explores the implications of this shocking conviction as they have reverberated throughout history.today, the west remains utterly saturated by christian assumptions. our morals and ethics are not universal. instead, they are the fruits of a very distinctive civilization. concepts such as secularism, liberalism, science, and homosexuality are deeply rooted in a christian seedbed. from babylon to the beatles, saint michael to #metoo, dominion tells the story of how christianity transformed the world.
Reviews:
The increasing number of people in the West today who have abandoned the faith of their forebears, and dismiss all religion as pointless superstition, remain recognisably its heirs. Seen close-up, the division between a sceptic and a believer may seem unbridgeable. Widen the focus, though, and Christianity's enduring impact upon the West can be seen in the emergence of much that has traditionally been cast as its nemesis: in science, in secularism, and yes, even in atheism. That is why Dominion will place the story of how we came to be what we are, and how we think the way that we do, in the broadest historical context.Greg B

14. Faith Of Our Fathers: A History Of True England [Book]

Product Details:
The catholic church has been a part of english history since the arrival of christian missionaries to roman britain in the first century after christ. england was evangelized in these early centuries to such an extent that, by the time the romans withdrew in the fifth century, the celtic population was largely catholic. anglo-saxon england, prior to the norman conquest, was a land of saints. from st. bede, with his history of the early church, to the holy king st. edward the confessor, saxon england was ablaze with the light of christ. during the reign of st. edward, a vision of the virgin at walsingham placed the mother of god on the throne as england's queen, the land being considered her dowry. even following the norman conquest, the faith continued to flourish and prosper, making its joyful presence felt in what would become known as merrie england. then in the sixteenth century, this catholic heart was ripped from the people of england, against their will and in spite of their spirited and heroic resistance, by the reign of the tudors. this made england once again a land of saints–that is, of martyrs, with catholic priests and laity being put to death for practicing the faith. the martyrdoms would continue for 150 years, followed by a further 150 years of legal and political persecution. in the nineteenth century, against all the odds, there was a great catholic revival, heralded by the conversion of st. john henry newman, which would continue into the twentieth century. much of the greatest literature of the past century has been written by literary converts to the church, such as g. k. chesterton, evelyn waugh, graham greene, and j. r. r. tolkien. this whole exciting, faith-filled story is told by joseph pearce within a single-volume history of "true england", the england that remained true to the faith through thick and thin, in times both "merrie" and perilous. it is a story not only worth telling but worth celebrating.
Reviews:
When I began reading I thought I'd just read one chapter per day. then I discovered that I had read two chapters without realizing it. Any book that can keep me reading without realizing how far I had read is interesting, informative and tantalizing. The reader has to know what's going to happen next.Marian B.

Reviews:
This book is a special research project by the now current director of the Barna Research Group. Its a porject to see what the outside world, those who do not claim a Christian faith, think and actually believe about Christianity. It is a blunt book with a mixture of comment and statistics but with some valid challenges to Christians on how they look to the world. It is based on research in the U.S. but is a very solid book and well worth a read. A little expensive here…
This book was required reading for a course. For people in Christian ministry, it was all common sense as to the perceptions of Christianity by the "outsiders." The suggested solutions, however, were simplistic and would simply be treating the symptoms as it were. The root of the rejection of Christianity lies within our culture's drift toward taking the "easy road" in life. We have generation after generation growing up with a sense of entitlement and instant gratification, each worse than the last. Christianity calls for service, denial of desires, and a disciplined life which conflicts with what the outsiders want. This is not likely to change.medman32423
This book is written from a Christian viewpoint based on studies and research done by the author -concerning the reasons for the increasing negativity towards Christians. This negativity is based on the actions of Christians themselves , due to perceived judgmental behaviors and actual actions or non actions ,taken by Christians concerning non Christians- or the unsaved , unchurched . The book lists the three main detriments of acting Christians as viewed by non Christians and the reasons for this animosity by such. The author fills a void in this area and the book comes off as a sociological study with a Christian bent , however the author is seeking an actual awareness of the issues involved and is one of the few to hit the issues head on , and actually admitting to the mainstream market that Christians, themselves- have a lot to do with this negative attitude . Mostly due to their own actions and reactions towards others. This book has gone to the main stream readers rather then being kept behind the closed doors of the non secular market . It is a unique approach to a growing issue and should be read by all with a bewilderment in the practices of exclusionary Christians .ravens_collections

Reviews:
If you claim to be a Christian, and are not afraid of the truth or checking up on what your pastor is teaching, grab this book…. I have used this for over 4 years to get "opposing viewpoints" and have learned a ton, both good & bad. Tho you should not place ANY book on the same level as the Bible, a book with views that are closer to the Apostles should be in every Christians library. By it if you are not afraid to be challenged to your core….jcspro40

The videos are compelling, and in 8 sessions you will have led people through the entire gospel of Mark. I cannot recommend this strongly enough.
